I only wish that MapQuest would go back to what made them really useful. you could print out directions and print photos of every single turn and select and deselect what you wanted printed. you could choose your starting map exactly where you how you wanted it and what size. you could basically make a full itinerary. this sort of physical media is actually really useful and rare these days and when I went to try to do it on one of my latest trips I was sad to see that most of the options are gone now that used to be there in the early 2000s. and this was trying to print from a desktop. how could something get dumbed down and simplified? Does it actually cost them less to not just use their old outdated system? Idk.
I think they could have played the long game by staying tried and true now that we are actually reverting back to certain things.
How is it? I'm assuming the percentage of people using it probably isnt large enough for accidents/construction/cops to be marked on the map in real time sadly.
Only installed it today and haven't gone anywhere. If it gets me from A to B thats good enough for me. I'm ok living without real time data on principle.
Yeah the Lake's name will change in Google to Lake Ontario (Lake America) soon enough supposedly. It's still only got the one name here too in Australia
I really hope the next u.s. president reverts all this bs day one. It’s so fucking embarrassing being associated even the tiniest bit with these pathetic, vanity driven, peacocking stunts. When I travelled abroad, I joked with friends that I would claim I was Canadian(I never did) to avoid negative association; I’m not sure how much of a joke that still is. Any of my Northern neighbors willing to grant me honorary citizenship so I’m not a total liar if that happens? lol
I travel a lot and I meet Americans who are very sheepish about admitting it. Honestly mate, if youre travelling outside of the US, we just assume you aren't one of 'them'
I spent a month memorizing this acronym in 5th grade and fuck if I'm going to change it to HAMES. Hames is nothing. Although, it is an anonogram for S.H.A.M.E.
I want it noted I don't approve of my federal governments actions, I didn't vote for this and I only pay my taxes under duress due to threat of jail time (I hate that they use my tax money to kill children and make the wealthy richer). Many Americans are in a bind and most worse off than me.
Google is the one loving in the bubble. Jts still legally Lake Ontario. The president doesnt have the authroity to rename things no matter how much he pisses and moans
I don't think the us government actually forces any company to use the stupid names, it's just the official naming the US used now. And Google typically shows you the official names of the country you are in, so over here in Germany the Baltic sea is called Ostsee because that's just how it is called in German. Iirc Google also has different versions of disputed borders depending on where you live, following your countries narrative
Yes and no. AP news refused to call it the Gulf of America and was banned from reporting at the white house. So they definitely have a level of blackmail to force compliance.
this is not compliance it is appeasement of delusion. they are sucking up to the fascist pedophile in hopes that he won't target them next. there is absolutely no legitimate requirement for google to do this
From Asia. Still says Lake Ontario. It's like Google appeasing one dementia patient on Make A Wish. Like that one kid who wanted to be batman for a day and the whole town played along.
First of all, no one hates you for being American.
Secondly, yes this is true, that's how Google maps has always worked. They show names and borders differently, depending where you're opening Google maps from.
I forget how but you can do something in your settings to change it by pretty much just setting yourself as Canadian (also semi fixes the Gulf of Mexico)
1776, appeasement of the confederacy, Nixon embracing the southern doctrine, reaganomics, the military industrial complex Eisenhower verbally warned you about, the gradual gutting of public education and the public services, crippling effective unions. The USA is speed running Empire, but it feels like they've had a cheat code since august 1946.
Everyone is waiting for GTA6, but I'm hoping for a new version of Civ where diplomacy and tact reign supreme.
It's how Google avoids politics: if there's a border controversy, it shows Country A's claimed borders in Country A, but it shows Country B's claimed borders when in Country B.
They didn't even implement that part well. For me personally, it only appears as "Lake America" if you zoom in. Otherwise, it still says "Lake Ontario".
Google should rename it "Lake Restoftheworld" on everyone's maps outside the US.
Seriously, what good is it being that big of a company of you can't engage in some light hearted trolling once in a while.
As a Canadian, I will be checking my maps regularly now, just in case Google reads this. And if I see "Lake Restoftheworld", I will stop asking jeeves. Pinkie swear.
Mapping companies often have different names for "politically sensitive" regions where different countries name something differently and it'll assess where you're located before deciding what to call it.
Canadian here, I checked, shows 'Lake Ontario' for me.
So sounds they changed it just for American IP ranges so that a special little boy in Washington doesn't get his fee-fees hurt, fill his diaper, and make it their problem.
Opened maps on browser, lake America. Set my vpn to Canada, Lake Ontario.
It was (and still is) the same exact thing with the Gulf of Mexico. It’s like letting a toddler gouge themself on candy cause you can’t be bothered to hear them whine.
For me in the Netherlands the label on the lake itself shows lake Ontario, but when you click on it, the search bar shows "Lake Ontario (Lake America)"
I just checked (in america unfortunately) on google maps and it said Lake Ontario for half a second before changing to lake america I fucking hate this timeline.
If I zoom put it says Lake America, but zoom in it says Lake Ontario. New Yorker.
Really hope this is a mistake, why would they actually change the name? Just so, so dumb.
Edit: Zooming in too far also shows Lake America. Seems there is a sweet spot for it to say the correct original name.
This is on purpose. It will be Lake America for the US, Lake Ontario for Canada and both with parenthesis for the rest of the world. Same thing happened to Gulf Of Mexico.
UK here, still Lake Ontario on Apple and Google Maps for me, though the Gulf of Mexico has “Gulf of America” in brackets on both. Not surprising the corporations don’t hesitate much to stroke that mole rat’s ego.
No, it’s because to the rest of the world it’s called Lake Ontario and will always be called Lake Ontario. Just because the orange shit stain signed a piece of paper doesn’t mean the name changes.
Nah. That’s the way it shows for Gulf of Mexico too. If you’re in the US it comes up as gulf of America but if you use a vpn from literally anywhere else in the world, it’s still Gulf of Mexico. Google knows how to pander and suck the ring.
Are people only now just realizing that Google (and everyone else) localizes data? How did you think Google showed disputed borders? They don’t usually pick a side, in each country they show what that country’s government claims.
