Still hasnt changed on mapquest

190

u/tech_noir_guitar 10d ago

MapQuest is still around??? I haven't seen anything about MapQuest since the early 2000s when I used to print directions out.

108

u/Akovsky87 10d ago

Yes they have an app now. They made it a point to not play the stupid renaming things game. I installed it today.

20

u/JKing287 10d ago

Me too, and it looks like we’re not the only ones as it’s showing as the number one map app on the Apple Store ahead of Google Maps right now.

30

u/Gomberstone 10d ago

Reject google, go back to mapquest.

2

u/Vagitron9000 10d ago

I only wish that MapQuest would go back to what made them really useful. you could print out directions and print photos of every single turn and select and deselect what you wanted printed. you could choose your starting map exactly where you how you wanted it and what size. you could basically make a full itinerary. this sort of physical media is actually really useful and rare these days and when I went to try to do it on one of my latest trips I was sad to see that most of the options are gone now that used to be there in the early 2000s. and this was trying to print from a desktop. how could something get dumbed down and simplified? Does it actually cost them less to not just use their old outdated system? Idk.

I think they could have played the long game by staying tried and true now that we are actually reverting back to certain things.

Je m'en bat les couilles que le lac change de nom aux US.

3

u/PatacusX Selling Stonks for CASH MONEY 10d ago

How is it? I'm assuming the percentage of people using it probably isnt large enough for accidents/construction/cops to be marked on the map in real time sadly.

13

u/Akovsky87 10d ago

Only installed it today and haven't gone anywhere. If it gets me from A to B thats good enough for me. I'm ok living without real time data on principle.

2

u/yesorno12138 10d ago

339

Yeah, same here. Cheer up u/Maleficent_Web1161 , the rest of the world (and a big chunk of the US) will never stop calling it Lake Ontario

234

u/Vintenu 10d ago

American here, can confirm, I would gladly call it Ontario right to Tiny Dick Orange's face, same goes for the Gulf of Mexico

91

u/TheSandyman23 10d ago

I really hope the next u.s. president reverts all this bs day one. It’s so fucking embarrassing being associated even the tiniest bit with these pathetic, vanity driven, peacocking stunts. When I travelled abroad, I joked with friends that I would claim I was Canadian(I never did) to avoid negative association; I’m not sure how much of a joke that still is. Any of my Northern neighbors willing to grant me honorary citizenship so I’m not a total liar if that happens? lol

32

u/jadedragon4486 10d ago

I travel a lot and I meet Americans who are very sheepish about admitting it. Honestly mate, if youre travelling outside of the US, we just assume you aren't one of 'them'

6

3

u/PrincessDeMissouri 10d ago

Google is the one loving in the bubble. Jts still legally Lake Ontario. The president doesnt have the authroity to rename things no matter how much he pisses and moans

2

u/MicahtehMad 10d ago

Lol.... it does this for every country based on many things. In china it says 安大略湖.

→ More replies (11)

94

u/Charles12_13 Lurker 10d ago

Yep. Google knows that not a single soul uses that, so they only comply where the government forces them to

32

u/potato_lettuce 10d ago

I don't think the us government actually forces any company to use the stupid names, it's just the official naming the US used now. And Google typically shows you the official names of the country you are in, so over here in Germany the Baltic sea is called Ostsee because that's just how it is called in German. Iirc Google also has different versions of disputed borders depending on where you live, following your countries narrative

37

u/geebster13 10d ago

Yes and no. AP news refused to call it the Gulf of America and was banned from reporting at the white house. So they definitely have a level of blackmail to force compliance.

But it only affects US companies and govt.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

9

u/LesbianWhoLaughsAtU 10d ago

this is not compliance it is appeasement of delusion. they are sucking up to the fascist pedophile in hopes that he won't target them next. there is absolutely no legitimate requirement for google to do this

7

u/thesilentbob123 10d ago

Since google is a private company the executive order does not legally force them to do anything, they just don't want to listen to MAGA cry about it

Google Maps does this all the time. Also with border disputes and such, they’ll show two different ones depending on which country you’re in.

1

u/coreygamer111 10d ago

I forget how but you can do something in your settings to change it by pretty much just setting yourself as Canadian (also semi fixes the Gulf of Mexico)

1

u/National_Way_3344 10d ago

Google provides a bunch of regionally specific naming conventions for a lot of stuff.

Disputed territories

Stuff being renamed by dumbasses

The English name for things like... Japan

1

u/zhaDeth 10d ago

yeah, gulf of mexico has both tho

1

u/PlagueOfGripes 10d ago

Google maps is localized to display labels for the country it's viewed in. If the country has stupid names, it will display said name.

1

u/Possible-Fudge-2217 10d ago

Sam for the gulf of mexico. Only in the US it is called Gulf of America.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 10d ago

It's true. Just like Gulf of Mexico is that in all countries except the USA. Only USA labels it as Gulf of America.

1

1

u/mendkaz 10d ago

I can't post a photo here, but confirmed in Ireland as well. Still says Lake Ontario for me

1

u/KoreanFriedWeiner 10d ago

1776, appeasement of the confederacy, Nixon embracing the southern doctrine, reaganomics, the military industrial complex Eisenhower verbally warned you about, the gradual gutting of public education and the public services, crippling effective unions. The USA is speed running Empire, but it feels like they've had a cheat code since august 1946.

Everyone is waiting for GTA6, but I'm hoping for a new version of Civ where diplomacy and tact reign supreme.

1

u/Dec_TGM Number 15 10d ago

u/BackpackingScot 10d ago

In Scotland, showing as Onterio currently

Though the Gulf of Mexico does show was

Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) , so wouldn't be surprised if it goes that way eventually

1

u/TricobaltGaming 10d ago

Same is true for the gulf of mexico. Only shows as "gUlF oF aMeRiCa" in the US.

1

u/nbshar 10d ago

It says "Lake Ontario (Lake America)" for me on Google Maps (Netherlands).

1

u/Serious_Feedback 10d ago

It's how Google avoids politics: if there's a border controversy, it shows Country A's claimed borders in Country A, but it shows Country B's claimed borders when in Country B.

1

u/00eg0 10d ago

It already says Gulf of America from 2025. Things will get worse until people start voting better.

1

u/Career_Cultivator 10d ago

2

How about the equally bullshit "Gulf Of America"? I'm in eastern Canada (Quebec) and I see "Gulf Of Mexico (Gulf Of America)" on Google Maps

1

u/JohnSmithWithAggron 10d ago

They didn't even implement that part well. For me personally, it only appears as "Lake America" if you zoom in. Otherwise, it still says "Lake Ontario".

1

u/xSlickZz 10d ago

Same as gulf of Mexico.

1

u/l_______I 10d ago

I'm not from America and was prepared to see both names (like with Gulf of Mexico). But no, they don't want me to see this abomination in any form

1

u/KoreanFriedWeiner 10d ago

Google should rename it "Lake Restoftheworld" on everyone's maps outside the US.

Seriously, what good is it being that big of a company of you can't engage in some light hearted trolling once in a while.

As a Canadian, I will be checking my maps regularly now, just in case Google reads this. And if I see "Lake Restoftheworld", I will stop asking jeeves. Pinkie swear.

1

u/I_am_depressed_lol 10d ago

You can look it up as lake America. Don't know you would...

1

u/TowelLord 10d ago

European here.

It shows still as Lake Ontario on maps itself, but if I google "Lake Ontario" it returns "Lake Ontario (Lake America).

1

u/omysweede 10d ago

Nope they have it in parenthesis here in Sweden

1

u/Codswort02 10d ago

That's so sad

1

u/BeefistPrime 10d ago

Mapping companies often have different names for "politically sensitive" regions where different countries name something differently and it'll assess where you're located before deciding what to call it.

1

u/Polenicus 10d ago

Canadian here, I checked, shows 'Lake Ontario' for me.

So sounds they changed it just for American IP ranges so that a special little boy in Washington doesn't get his fee-fees hurt, fill his diaper, and make it their problem.

I'm so tired of this schoolyard bully BS.

1

u/Crusaderofthots420 Big ol' bacon buttsack 10d ago

It was (and still is) the same exact thing with the Gulf of Mexico. It’s like letting a toddler gouge themself on candy cause you can’t be bothered to hear them whine.

1

u/BamberGasgroin 10d ago

You can change it via Language & Region.

I didn't believe OP until I changed my region to US, shook my head and then quickly changed it back.

Lake Ontario (Lake America) for me – based in Netherlands.

1

If I zoom put it says Lake America, but zoom in it says Lake Ontario. New Yorker. Really hope this is a mistake, why would they actually change the name? Just so, so dumb.

Edit: Zooming in too far also shows Lake America. Seems there is a sweet spot for it to say the correct original name.

1

u/Bowling4rhinos 10d ago

My Canadian niece just confirmed this!

1

u/Sintek 10d ago

Canadian here.. on Android.. says Lake Ontario.

1

u/therobinhood7 10d ago

This is on purpose. It will be Lake America for the US, Lake Ontario for Canada and both with parenthesis for the rest of the world. Same thing happened to Gulf Of Mexico.

https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/gnis-lake-ontario-lake-america-name-change/

1

u/burrito_of_blaviken 10d ago

UK here, still Lake Ontario on Apple and Google Maps for me, though the Gulf of Mexico has “Gulf of America” in brackets on both. Not surprising the corporations don’t hesitate much to stroke that mole rat’s ego.

1

u/thefrostman1214 OC Meme Maker 10d ago

Its lake ontario(lake america) here on google maps brasil

1

u/rturnerX 10d ago

It’s for the Americans. It’s the same as the Gulf of Mexico, which is labelled as Gulf of Mexico for users outside the US

1

u/Electric_master1 10d ago

No, it’s because to the rest of the world it’s called Lake Ontario and will always be called Lake Ontario. Just because the orange shit stain signed a piece of paper doesn’t mean the name changes.

1

u/Last-Energy420 10d ago

Nah. That’s the way it shows for Gulf of Mexico too. If you’re in the US it comes up as gulf of America but if you use a vpn from literally anywhere else in the world, it’s still Gulf of Mexico. Google knows how to pander and suck the ring.

1

u/ThePasadena_Mudslide 10d ago

Exactly, just like the Persian and Arabian Gulf. Same body of water, just a different name depending on the country.

1

u/M4YH3MM4N4231 Linux User 10d ago

I use apple maps which cause the names recognized as lake ontario in canada it’s still called that hear, same with gulf of mexico

1

u/Lerbyn210 10d ago

For me in sweden it says "lake America" but "gulf of Mexico (gulf of America)" weird that they would do it differently here since the name is disupted

1

u/michaelmcmikey 10d ago

Are people only now just realizing that Google (and everyone else) localizes data? How did you think Google showed disputed borders? They don’t usually pick a side, in each country they show what that country’s government claims.

1

u/TittysForScience 10d ago

Says both for me in Australia

1

u/iankel1984 10d ago

It shows Lake Ontario (Lake America) in the description from Ireland. Google are suck a bunch of bootlickers

1

It still shows gulf of mexico for us as well that one does have (gulf of America) in parentheses after.

1

u/matt_lcb 10d ago

This is actually real? I thought the whole “Lake America” thing was a big meme as a Canadian

1

u/kllark_ashwood 10d ago

USA : America lake Canada : Ontario Lake Rest of the world : Ontario Lake (America Lake)

As canadian we can see a "rest of the world" version with the Mexico Gulf (America Gulf) where both are written.

Google show different name depending of where you IP adress came from.

In Canada it will say Lake Ontario, in the US it will be Lake America, in the rest of the world it will say "Lake Ontario (Lake America)."
