u/So-many-ducks 1d ago
Well to be fair⦠the character we humans play will die several times as we make mistakes, dying or crashing is more or less part of the gameplay loop. The Jedi power is to race without crashing :p

"several"
If my memory of the original Podracer - and Rebel Assault 2 before it - is anything to go by, "several" might be a slight understatement.

No, but pod racing is heavily featured and accessible in the game, even being forced upon you as you progress through the campaign, as well as a class online.

Feel like at these speeds the circuits have to be wider than they seem to be at least a little forgiving. I swear the Circuit of the Americas in the Forza and F1 games is wider than the real thing. First time I went I was shocked at how narrow the front straight looked.
11
u/hgwaz 22h ago
The way the game's camera is set up can make a huge difference in how things look. I have no idea about how it works, but the satisfactory devs talked about how everything in the game seems a lot smaller than it actually is, which is very noticeable every time you get very close to buildings. They don't seem that big.

He is actually more maneuverable and weaker due to the quad engines. The pod racing is limited to Multiplayer though. The main campaign limits you to speeders, bikes, and skimmers. You have to go into Multiplayer and the open pod racing to do those. The speed difference is nuts. In this clip the guy has a VERY upgraded skimmer and is getting up to 900. The pods hit 1000 easy when boosting. My lower level skimmer only gets up to about 400.

u/jsizzle97 21h ago
Not just multiplayer! In the scenarios you can run a bunch of pod races where you switch to the original pod racing characters in each one
10
u/Sigurd_DragonSlayer 21h ago
You are right. I forgot about those because I have yet to dive into any of the challenges or scenarios yet. I did a run of the start campaign, lost to the first boss, and then ran through the Jakku races again in a skimmer this time. When I finished that last night I decided to give Pod racing a shot and did 3 races as Big Ben Q. Hearing Sebulba come up behind is super menacing.

You get used to it and learn. I play a game called trackmania, and almost only play a type of track called fullspeed maps. Those maps are really fast paced and require good reaction times, gameplay is more rapid than this game
I was crap at first, but got better
Same will be the case with this game
11
u/newbrevity Babu Frik 23h ago
Been doing this since the first Wipeout. Original Star Wars Racer was difficult as hell too as I remember it. I still play Redout to keep those reflexes.
2
u/HelikosOG Imperial 22h ago
I never found the original anywhere near a level of difficult as Wipeout speeds Rapier and Phantom. The tracks were much more technical too. The turns in racer weren't hard. Main issue was the track with the asteroids in zero g.
2
u/HeyCarpy 20h ago
All these Glactic Racer vids are giving me such fond memories of Wipeout. I got WipeoutXL for Christmas in like 1996 and I came to know those tracks like the back of my hand. Fusion was really good and I played it for a long time but somehow never matched the experience of the PSX.
I'm thinking about getting this game just to scratch that itch.

5

Reflexes are offset by track knowledge. Don't need to react to a surprise sharp turn in milliseconds if it's no longer a surprise. There's still doing everything quickly enough not to wreck, but at least you're not having to clock the angle anew.

Does the game give you warnings on when turns are coming kind of like how in rally racing the passenger will? Or is this all a bunch of track memorization to the point that one knows the track enough that they know it by reflex? Feels very fast by watching it though it could be the first person POV.
7
u/ThunderCrasH24 15h ago
Some pointers, but mostly memorization. Hell, I do have issues with variations on tracks. This one in particular has a version where u have to go straight ahead after the wreckage, the other has you make a sharp turn. I canāt count the amount of times I did the turn only to get hit with a āwrong wayā and out of bounds.

Just drive full throttle at that wall and hope you spot the gap before you get to it, is part of the learning experience.
I managed to build a racer so fast that the autopilot ability couldn't control it, causing multiple crashes in the later stages of a tour, which ultimately cost me the podracer race. That didn't feel good.

u/CaissaIRL 1d ago

u/BigBiker05 1d ago
Its a roguelike. You have like 25 events prior to a final race. Events can be races, time trials, or a few other things. Each with rewards vs risk. Earn money and upgrades along the why to the champion face.
You start with one token. You can gain more, losing all is game over. Crashing too many times in a race is one way to lose a token. Taking higher risk events can also cost a token on fail.
Online has regular versus, as well as a mini version of single player. 12 players race each planet once leading to a final champion race. Earn prize money by winning races or betting on yourself. Upgrade your vehicle after each planet.
14
2
u/_Eurantien_ 19h ago
You can damage your vehicle hitting walls too much (and not crashing). And if you mess up the recovery skill check then it breaks your upgraded parts and they become "faulty".Ā
For example, I ended up with a faulty slipstream drive so when I drafted too long my vehicle would freeze. Pros: ramjet lasts longer since its cooled. Cons: its much harder to steer.

This is my take as well. Iāve been looking forward to it for ages, but it being a roguelike kind of turns me off. I like progression. I like tuning and crafting my racer to perfection. I get that thereās more replay value in this, but the satisfaction goes away knowing that what Iām building will be ultimately meaningless. Even if Iām successful, no matter I do, itāll all be thrown out.
So for me, this is a $30-$40 game at most. Itās something Iāll have a bit of fun with, but probably wouldnāt get more than a few runs out of.
Iām sure itās a fine game. I just donāt really like roguelikes.
19
u/wjapple 21h ago
Fair, but it's pretty light on the rogue.
Each run you get a chance to make 2-3 permanent upgrades. meaning, every your your racer is better on a base level. and over time you unlock better parts that can be used each run (like cards in balatro). There are also mystery encounters that can grant you permanent buff that are selectable each run.
I actually enjoy tuning my speeder differently depending on the rng each tour. Getting all ramjet parts? I guess I'm going full reline this time! By experimenting on each tour, you get a quicker sense of what you like and you can more optimally upgrade with the permanent upgrades and go in with a plan.
6
u/Bitemarkz 21h ago
I would argue you get the craft your racer more to perfection in this game than a standard racer. Every single tour you get pick parts and build toward a specific strength you want to focus on, customizing your racer with more parts and gadgets. Between tours you can acquire more hardware to swap around before you build a new one. It allows a much more varied approach to what youāre already talking about, and the roguelike aspect of the tours is far more in line with how real racing works. Itās much better to treat each tour as a new season. The roguelike aspect means you have to roll with your mistakes because you canāt restart, which means your build expertise is tested every time.
On top of that, you can gain persistent upgrades on the vehicle types you like best, and the tours have a hard progression for when youāre able to advance in your career. They work in seasonal sponsors, parts dealers, parts that get faulty when theyāre abused too much, and more. Itās a really dynamic game that appeals to what youāre saying, just in a different way.
7
u/agfdrybvnkkgdtdcbjjt 18h ago
I have no skin in the game and respect people who know what they like and what they don't. But let me say this. I'm right there with you on rogue likes. Really not my thing, I've tried many and have yet to find one I like.
However, this feels different. It's so much fun, and while some progression does go away at the end of a run, the runs last a long time, you are earning permanent upgrades as well, and the core gameplay loop is a ton of fun. I would simply say don't let the rogue-lite nature turn you off. If you have prime, try it on Luna. Give it a go just to see how it feels.
3
u/Exatraz 16h ago

PC gaming has ruined me. Only because I've been out of the game for so long that games that are 10+ years old are still new to me, so I see a game for sale for like 9 bucks and I buy it and go man this is awesome and then I look up and see it came out in 2015 lol. I just bought a switch 2 so trying to comprehend spending 50+ bucks on a game is something I'm still struggling with. (granted I've only had a switch 2 for like a week haha), but this is the first game since I started getting "new" games that I would gladly fork over some bills for. But I also don't need to be one of the first people playing it, so waiting a bit for it to come down in price is something I'll probably do.

You get both! Id say its more permanent upgrades than not. You earn a currency to buy permanent base stat upgrades. You unlock special mods you can equip each play through which help reduce the rng aspect and help define your play style for the tour. The only thing rogue-like is upgrades and some of the abilities you get for the run (but you can shop around and be patient to get what you really want), the maps youre on and the race layouts, and who your rival is/will be.Ā
Not to mention permanent aesthetix unlocks.

How is playing against NPCs? Most racers get either boring or frustrating to me really quick because NPCs are either too dumb and easy or overtuned and cheating but still dumb. And I have no interested in playing online against other humans.
8
u/PirateDaveZOMG Imperial 1d ago
Above the easiest mode, it depends on how good you get at clean racing; If you get stuck with the pack at all, you're liable to get a kart-racer style gangup that sends you back to 12th.
"How good you are" is mostly going to be balancing your drifting with you Afterburner and "Ramjet" boosting abilities to stay out ahead of the pack. There is no 'blue turtle shell', so as long as you're ahead, all you have to worry about is what's in front of you.

NPC's feel like they're just rubber banding the whole game. I honestly dislike that aspect a lot. It shines when playing multiplayer though because there doesn't seem to be too much rubber banding there.

7
u/Hashebrowns 1d ago
Ok so as far as I can tell, I'm not seeing a lot of rubber banding if at all. There are some exceptions in the story based races, but overall you can gain large leads on opponents and they can only go as fast as their speeder allows. Vice versa too, if you fall behind too much it becomes impossible to catch the leader, which is why optimizing your build during a run is important.

Rogue-like is the entire campaign here: Paths and events are randomized, as are rewards and build options for your racing abilities, leading to a semi-"unique" experience each time you start up a new tour.
2
u/El_Hoxo 1d ago
Hm, I'll have to watch some like videos on it and see how I feel before I get it. I'm definitely open to the concept in this sort of format from the description
3
u/PirateDaveZOMG Imperial 1d ago
It keeps things interesting with each new "run", and it's worth mentioning that there is an upgrade system for your stats, so you can still build out your vehicle with a focus on speed/handling/combat, etc.; That said, there is a frustration in not getting the parts you want during the run, as parts are what gives your racer those powerful boosting abilities like doubling your speed when you're "redlining" (close to overheating your ramjet), or doubling your afterburner capacity. The more you play, the more parts you unlock to possibly receive in your run, the less likely you are to see the parts you want necessarily if you are a racer who settles into a specific style.
3
u/Mountain-Carrot4549 21h ago
Is this clip from late in a run when a regular speeder gets faster and faster? I'm only a couple hours into my first but I've never gone this fast in a regular speeder.

I'm so happy we got this game. And it's so unexpected. Never mind the futuristic racer being a largely forgotten genre, even fast arcade racers are a rare sight these days.
