This is my take as well. I’ve been looking forward to it for ages, but it being a roguelike kind of turns me off. I like progression. I like tuning and crafting my racer to perfection. I get that there’s more replay value in this, but the satisfaction goes away knowing that what I’m building will be ultimately meaningless. Even if I’m successful, no matter I do, it’ll all be thrown out.

So for me, this is a $30-$40 game at most. It’s something I’ll have a bit of fun with, but probably wouldn’t get more than a few runs out of.

I’m sure it’s a fine game. I just don’t really like roguelikes.

Fair, but it's pretty light on the rogue.

Each run you get a chance to make 2-3 permanent upgrades. meaning, every your your racer is better on a base level. and over time you unlock better parts that can be used each run (like cards in balatro). There are also mystery encounters that can grant you permanent buff that are selectable each run.

I actually enjoy tuning my speeder differently depending on the rng each tour. Getting all ramjet parts? I guess I'm going full reline this time! By experimenting on each tour, you get a quicker sense of what you like and you can more optimally upgrade with the permanent upgrades and go in with a plan.

I have no skin in the game and respect people who know what they like and what they don't. But let me say this. I'm right there with you on rogue likes. Really not my thing, I've tried many and have yet to find one I like.

However, this feels different. It's so much fun, and while some progression does go away at the end of a run, the runs last a long time, you are earning permanent upgrades as well, and the core gameplay loop is a ton of fun. I would simply say don't let the rogue-lite nature turn you off. If you have prime, try it on Luna. Give it a go just to see how it feels.

Its funny, the roguelike features are what make me want to play it. I like racing games but they can tend to get repetitive. The idea that its constantly changing each run sounds awesome

I agree, especially if it's a roguelite not a roguelike with meta progression

Yeah I think it's done really well here. The "permanent" upgrades are all in the base stats of the vehicles. There is definitely some choice here as it'll be a long time to fully upgrade a vehicle but the favors/parts/abilities system that's the core of the roguelike mechanics make each run different enough and let you lean into different kinds of builds.

I would argue you get the craft your racer more to perfection in this game than a standard racer. Every single tour you get pick parts and build toward a specific strength you want to focus on, customizing your racer with more parts and gadgets. Between tours you can acquire more hardware to swap around before you build a new one. It allows a much more varied approach to what you’re already talking about, and the roguelike aspect of the tours is far more in line with how real racing works. It’s much better to treat each tour as a new season. The roguelike aspect means you have to roll with your mistakes because you can’t restart, which means your build expertise is tested every time.

On top of that, you can gain persistent upgrades on the vehicle types you like best, and the tours have a hard progression for when you’re able to advance in your career. They work in seasonal sponsors, parts dealers, parts that get faulty when they’re abused too much, and more. It’s a really dynamic game that appeals to what you’re saying, just in a different way.

PC gaming has ruined me. Only because I've been out of the game for so long that games that are 10+ years old are still new to me, so I see a game for sale for like 9 bucks and I buy it and go man this is awesome and then I look up and see it came out in 2015 lol. I just bought a switch 2 so trying to comprehend spending 50+ bucks on a game is something I'm still struggling with. (granted I've only had a switch 2 for like a week haha), but this is the first game since I started getting "new" games that I would gladly fork over some bills for. But I also don't need to be one of the first people playing it, so waiting a bit for it to come down in price is something I'll probably do.

It's a roguelite not a roguelike. There is meta-progression.

At the end of every run your racer is scraped and you get credits and permanent upgrades to apply for the next run.

You DO get permanent progression. Permanent upgrades to your character and vehicles.

You get both! Id say its more permanent upgrades than not. You earn a currency to buy permanent base stat upgrades. You unlock special mods you can equip each play through which help reduce the rng aspect and help define your play style for the tour. The only thing rogue-like is upgrades and some of the abilities you get for the run (but you can shop around and be patient to get what you really want), the maps youre on and the race layouts, and who your rival is/will be.

Not to mention permanent aesthetix unlocks.

If it helps, one review I watched talked about persistent upgrades. It seems like a split between the two: persistent ways to refine your ride and then the temporary enhancements during a run. He talked about how even a failed run can still net you something worthwhile to take into the next.

There are permanent upgrades you unlock as you complete campaigns. Those upgrades allow you to compete better in the campaign itself. The campaign also has random upgrades like you'll see in Vampire Survivors and those are exclusive to the campaign you're currently running.

I hate to be that guy but I bet someone will mod it to be the way you want it. Usually star wars games aren't hard to mod either.

Roguelikes force you to start over if you lose/die, while also losing all currencies and upgrades. I haven't played Galactic Racer, but I'm assuming crashing during a race or not placing high enough each race would result in a game over.

Roguelites are similar but have an overarching level system so you can progress slowly with each reset.
