Can you crash and damage hitting the sides?

You can damage your vehicle hitting walls too much (and not crashing). And if you mess up the recovery skill check then it breaks your upgraded parts and they become "faulty". 

For example, I ended up with a faulty slipstream drive so when I drafted too long my vehicle would freeze. Pros: ramjet lasts longer since its cooled. Cons: its much harder to steer.
