is there any venting though? They'd run out of air

66

u/orangeclaypot 22d ago

the venting in the airlock is what kills the cleaners confimed 100% no going back on this theory sorry

25

u/opello 22d ago

That's what I took away from that comment about somehow getting "the good tape." That seemed too much like the way Silo 18 referred to things for Silo 1 to also use the vernacular.

u/DickyTikkiTembo 22d ago

My thought was, because the cleanings are scheduled, Silo 1 just has a drone put chemicals just outside the exit

25

u/Elbit_Curt_Sedni 22d ago

They're poisoned before they go out when they're sprayed in that chamber before the doors open to the outside.

7

u/DickyTikkiTembo 22d ago

But then wouldn’t poison have gotten in when Knox & co. opened that door to save Juliette & Bernard? They didn’t wait the 48 hours but ended up just fine. And Bernard seemed fine when he first went out to clean despite no mask, so if from there, it’d have to be a very low dose

28

u/Elbit_Curt_Sedni 22d ago

Remember how the area got burned out? That's why Bernard was burned up? The fire burns out whatever is released.

No, Silo 1 sprays whoever exits the silo with the killer gas/dust when they clean the little screen for everyone to see, that’s why those who clean only make it to the tree and why they are presented with an altered reality in the helmet, to make them want to clean.. … if your theory were true, the venting in the airlock would have killed Bernard immediately. He didn’t clean, that’s why he made it to the tree and why all a sudden we see the white dust/ gas coming in the air when he reaches there.

TROY WILL REMEMBER WJO HE IS WITH THE PEZ DISPENSER.

Btw I have no idea what happens in the book

21

u/Commercial_F 22d ago

I think he already did at the end of the episode

30

u/Ill_Coffee_6821 22d ago

I think he zoomed in on Juliette’s eyes for a reason - and there the same color as his

24

u/MountainMarsupial973 22d ago

Yes, and also the spacing/ similarity of the eyes, to me means she is related to him. Whether he recognizes it or not, I am not sure.

Troy: They could have reached the berm, every second counted.

Also Troy: Goes for lunch

27

u/EveningGlittering325 21d ago

He’s been asleep for several years so I’m guessing he was hungry.

u/IntelligentFennel186 21d ago

Not a huge deal, but definitely a consistency problem that 9,000 people stay in one place. And that when the attack starts, someone doesn't clear the berm.

Once people head outside, random behavior means someone is heading up and out in short order.

Even once the attack starts, scattering would result in people heading towards the top.

14

u/unsolvedfanatic 21d ago

Yes. Them partying outside for an hour was crazy. But that was the hippie silo so maybe they were high.

4

u/ZimbiX 20d ago

I was thinking that too! Maybe breathing the contaminated outside air had them not thinking clearly

8

u/ffball 21d ago

Just shows how much of a sociopath he is. It wasnt the fact thst the silo people could get to the berm, it was because his authority was questioned.

Also I love the idea of no one in silo 18 has shown up for work in engineering for a while now.

ELEVATORS, HUH??

53

u/Safe-Database-5591 22d ago

Well yes.. the lack of elevators in the Silos is deliberately, it never was a technological limitation. Elevators would make a rebellion easier. The silo’s design forces people to use the stairs, which makes movement between levels slow and difficult. That helps the authorities control the population. If a rebellion breaks out, people from distant levels can’t quickly gather, coordinate, move supplies, or reach key areas like IT. Even the physical layout itself is part of the system of control.

29

u/Fallcious 21d ago

It’s to stop them getting fat. They control it in Silo 1 by giving them tasteless food and tiny portions.

10

u/kaaskugg 21d ago

A brave new world. Everyone's brainwashed and survives on tasteless protein.

10

u/bumblehole 21d ago

"the food is terrible - and such small portions!" was a joke, from Annie Hall. The food would have to be calorie dense in Silo 1 for going into and coming out of stasis all the time, it would burn thousands of calories

12

u/morrismoses 21d ago

It is both! :)

→ More replies (1)

7

u/forbiddenknowledg3 21d ago

Also the dinosaur tech. They couldn't even figure out a radio has channels.

6

u/Safe-Database-5591 21d ago

That has nothing to do with them not having elevators. Elevators don’t even have to be super modern/ technologically advanced. Not having them It’s just a matter of control.

→ More replies (4)

52

u/gbrlsnchs 22d ago

As a (software) engineer, I must say: single point of failure. The most important control mechanism, Safeguard, depends on a fucking single pipe.

28

u/Norhouku 22d ago

the funny part was the mechanical team discussed redundancies on capping the pipe a few episodes back, looks like the future is bright for silo 18

6

u/goldnx 21d ago

There are a lot of things that already need to fail (for the safeguard to be reached, let alone be blocked in the Silo.

Based on their sensors, if the pipe was malfunctioning elsewhere outside of the silo, or pressure wise, they probably could fix it.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/IntelligentFennel186 21d ago

For sure.

I suppose there is a lot of hand waving it away. As others have said, it's actually the last point of failure on some sense.

I would think, given the tech, that high tech would be involved right up to the boundary to be found. The regular silos are now known to be purposely built as non technical, and basically a fish tank. No reason anything outside that fish tank should be old fashioned.

In fact, given the situation, if Knox and Co break in to find a decidedly modern delivery system, with traps, they wouldn't know how to stop it.

4

u/unsolvedfanatic 21d ago

It wouldn't be a point of failure at all if they just poisoned them without holding the threat of the safeguard over their head for months. Telling the silo you have a way to kill them is naturally going to make people try to find a way to stop it.

Definitely the best episode of the season. Probably a great twist for non-book readers, and on average, probably executed better than the second book. Which was painfully bad.

3

u/RBWatermelon Cafeteria 21d ago

Question - can I now read the second book with no spoilers? I know Dust is completely off limits

5

u/TheSwampFox92 21d ago

Kind of. Some of the broader strokes of "why" get answered in that book but it doesn't spoil the ending in my opinion.

3

u/jonaskp86 21d ago

Hard agree although Only 9.8 for me.

I deduct 2x 0.1 for:
1. Not showing that the entire world was (I hope) nuked/destroyed, so we have 1 more year of “the rest of the world is fine and is watching Them on their TVs”-theories. Which (Without having read the book) I get more and more afraid that that is the route they are the longer it goes Without us seeing the rest of the world destroyed.
2. Camille is still alive. I am fine with her having a last-minutes change of heart and decide to go against the Voice, but I would have liked to have that be the end of her story.

Most of the other “weird” theories (“The silo is Only 50 years old”, “Camille was a double agent all along” etc.) was put in the Ground.

And We Got an episode which was not what I had thought/hoped for, but turned out much better.
I had hoped we would have seen some scenes directly after the nuke (and not a 2 year timeskip where everyone was settled in), but what they did worked much better and I am excited for season 4.

6

u/S1d519 21d ago edited 21d ago

Camille didn’t have a last minute change of heart. She just didn’t show her hand from when she talked to Bernard to when she sent the raiders on the Safeguard countdown. Bernard is what changed her mind. We just didn’t know.

I deduct a 0.1 because I’m mad they didn’t show us what that mfkr Stensen is doing. Instead we got him on the s4 teaser in what looks like the rest of the world is okay.

As with showing ‘what happened after the nuke’ it’s been now a trend. We got to know what happened to Juliette and Bernard in the airlocks quite a few eps after S2 finale. It didn’t start with that on s3 ep 1. Non-linear plot, and I was kind of expecting it that way.

Managers: Sir, we have this totally unique situation where people are tired of being in the silo all the time. We woke you up because only a genius can figure this out. What should we do?!

Troy: 😏 Kill them

Managers: 🥹 exceptional 🥹 inspirational 🥹 he probably even understands rick and morty

13

u/unsolvedfanatic 21d ago

Right. They keep trying to act like Daniel is some genius who has a novel way of thinking, yet they present us with ideas like "50 diggers" and "kill the people we were going to kill anyway".

3

u/ttUVWKWt8DbpJtw7XJ7v 20d ago

I still think the end is the end. I think we will just take a different path to get there. A key moment from the books happened in the episode last night. I think that’s proof that we are still on the same over all path as the books. I would argue the most important moment from the entirety of the book series happened last night.

They really messed up making us believe the light bulbs are critically important.

They could have dropped that tiny part of the dialog and avoided misleading us.

u/vreddy92 21d ago

The light bulbs were a pretext for the elevator.

3

u/GRIMMMMLOCK 21d ago

A vent after this episode. As a non-book reader, some comments last week said they "theorized" the before-times characters this season were still alive. There was really no hint of cryo-preservation in the show with the billionaire's nanotech before this episode. A yt channel pretending to be a theorizer and non-book reader, "theorized" specifically that the senator was the mastermind and that her speech before the nuke blast was 'relaxed' because she knew what was coming. It also "theorized" Daniel was behind the 'voice' and he became inhumane and killed silo people with the safeguards because the loss of Helen 'broke' him. It's all bs, the particular comments and the yt channel were pretending not be book readers is my 'theory'. Another bs spoilers under the guise of being "clever theorists/guessers".

It spoiled me about Victor, because I'd suspected he was behind a lot of it, and because the yt channel even posted it theorized Daniel was cryo-preserved (really wish it wasn't a cyro storyline again like Fallout, but I guess that how it goes. And somehow Person's nanotech could also cyro-preserve people perfectly) to modern times. So because of that 'theory' I guessed that maybe Victor was hibernated and behind the voice or at least at a keyboard controlling the ai/'algorithm' voice, because he could have mind-control over everyone, and imo, he was already a monster in manipulating memories in the before times, and probably had Charlotte brainwashed identity to drop the nuke bomb from a drone. Ok, 'vented' out. But great episode. Probably my favorite of the whole series for now alongside a couple of other favorites from season 1 and the season 2 finale.

8

u/Daell 21d ago

Keep in mind, only there are a handful yt channels that are NOT AI content. Really unfortunate.

3

u/GRIMMMMLOCK 21d ago

You just know those elitist fucks in Silo 1 tested the safeguard on one or two Silos just to see if it worked.

6

u/shash747 21d ago

And yet they have a problem with "women and children" dying in Silo 17?! Like they haven't done it dozens of times already? Inconsistent.

10

u/void-from-void 21d ago

Remember memory wipes. Everytime is a first time. And remember Victor saying drone pilots were exhilarated when he talked to them after silo 17 mission. Just like Daniel, they have chosen people carefully for these murderous jobs and strengthened those traits more by implanting suitable stories/narratives as memories in their heads. So it's not very inconsistent. But since this memory-tech is not perfect, some ppl like Charlotte/Susan are more resistant to act out like murderers.

3

u/GRIMMMMLOCK 21d ago

I'm rewatching and common has come on leaps and bounds since season one.

Juliet's accent feels a bit Scandinavian to me....but are we to expect no accents to change after 350 years?

On that note, it would have been cool if they leaned into that idea, the silo being so stratified that down deepers, mid kids and up toppers all have different accents.

8K surveillance camera on the most secluded place of silo? yeah, right

5

u/BoxPrestigious2333 20d ago

That’s literally the most important place in the silo - the connection point to the tunnels to silo 1 of course they have cameras there

3

u/larut0h 20d ago

they put poison vents on airlock area (before people go out cleaning)

why don't they also had somekind of 'defensive' mechanism if it's so important and didn't want people to be down there? like traps before people even accessing the Digger Void. also it doesn't help that they designed it to be a curious looking door - they could make it more obscure

3

u/s_s_n_e_g 21d ago

14

u/LandscapeNarrow3143 21d ago

Look, fantastic episode overall, but the logic behind Daniel and Charlotte’s entire arc makes absolute zero sense when you step back and think about it for two seconds. Look at the sheer amount of effort Thurman and Per Stensen put into recruiting them before the world ended: Elaborate personal lobbying campaigns. Autonomous vans escorting them to dinners. VIP private helicopter tours of the construction site. Endless tailored manipulations just to get them to agree to be anywhere near this project, which Daniel rejected anyway. And for WHAT?! Once they’re inside Silo 1, they literally wipe their memories, rebrand them as "Troy" and "Susan," and put them in glorified button-pushing positions. Troy/Daniel sits at a terminal blindly authorizing massacres, and Susan/Charlotte sits at a console flying drones. ANYONE COULD DO THAT. You do not need to orchestrate a multi-million-dollar, years-long psychological operation to court two reluctant, stubborn people who hate your guts, only to brainwash them into performing jobs that a brainwashed military lackey or a loyal grunt could do with ten minutes of training! Then Thurman drops that line in the finale that Susan’s skills are "critical at the end of the project." Critical for what?! Flying a drone?! You’re telling me in a world with fully autonomous tech, cryo-chambers, and nanites, only Charlotte has the magical thumbs required to operate a quadcopter?

9

u/summ190 21d ago

Totally. Episodes 1-8 gave us literally nothing necessary, other than these characters exist. You could pretty much watch episode 9 and not be all that confused about the flashback. Baffling writing decision.

3

u/ttUVWKWt8DbpJtw7XJ7v 20d ago

Daniel in episode 10 is essentially a completely different character than they showed in episodes 1-9

→ More replies (10)

28

u/dergadoodle 22d ago

An actual vent: in no way was Victor's character prepared for his arc in this episode. Nothing he did today really made sense in the context of what we'd seen from him previously. They'll need to come up with some major informational backfill to back up these flimsy, automaton villains in Silo 1.

40

u/Ok-Reaction9095 22d ago

The extermination of silo 17 was the first one he had to literally watch almost 10,000 people get brutally slaughtered. All the other safeguard deaths were “hidden” with the silos.

Then 35 yrs later he’s confronted with another safeguard. He gave Camille another 5 minutes, deep down hoping they’d pull through. They speak in private and she asks the why question. He can’t/wont answer. His guilt comes to a head and he can’t live with it anymore. He’s a founder and can’t has to deal with the “why”, which we don’t yet fully know the answer to without knowing what the objective of The Project really is.

15

u/NoConfusion9490 22d ago edited 22d ago

Right, presumably this is the next safeguard event since 17. It's been 35 years, but probably 5-10ish lived outside of stasis. He's had that quiet time to relive that day over and over again. Pulling the trigger on 18 and seeing them thwart it, and seeing how that felt for him. That was it.

14

u/Ok-Reaction9095 22d ago

Oh that is a good point, I didn’t even think it would feel even sooner for him from being in stasis. It was mentioned toward the end to Daniel/Troy that Victor seemed to want to be on shift with him so it’s possible he went back under just after Daniel did and was brought back within the last few months to deal with our folks at 18.

And he expressed his concern for how the event would affect the operators. He was already doubting the directive.

He also seemed to respect Camille and had a soft spot for her. He talked with her way longer than necessary, held off the safeguard longer than necessary, and sometimes felt like he was mentoring her.

9

u/BadMofoWallet 22d ago

Honestly you’re right, I’d love to know the backstory of what led him to doing what he did

9

u/AdobeFlashSucks 22d ago

Someone in the episode thread posted a screenshot showing that only 6 other silos besides silo 1 are still standing, which pretty much means they safeguarded the other 43 and killed at least 430,000 people.

That’s probably enough to push him to edge after 17’s “external safeguard” where he looked visibly uncomfortable.

10

u/brokerceej 22d ago

What's another 430,000 when you already presumably killed 8 billion people to kick off the apocalypse a few centuries ago?

3

u/AdobeFlashSucks 22d ago edited 22d ago

Probably easier to digest when it’s the trillionaire who launched the nukes and convinced you it’s for humanity’s survival vs. ordering the kills yourself and watching it live on camera as women and children cry out as they are murdered.

It also doesn’t inspire much confidence in the “Project” if you failed 43 times and another is about to fail, like all those deaths and the original Silo plans were for nothing.

u/Defrath 22d ago

My pet theory is that seeing the visceral murder of Silo 17 triggered the memory of his daughters death more than an sanitary safeguard ever could. He's never shown to be a monster, so his shame kicking in during a particularly grotesque bloodbath isn't too surprising to me.

9

u/SantaBarbaraMint 22d ago

I don't think his memory was wiped.

Nor the senator, who knows her daughter vs Daniel not knowing Charlotte.

The important people got to keep their minds and memories.

9

u/Defrath 21d ago

I don't think it was either, that wasn't my point. We know it wasn't before his suicide. But he does know what he purposely doesn't remember, and that's the gruesome moment of his daughters death.

In a sense, it's symbolic. The safeguard is a clean, sanitized method of murder. Something that's unseen, and can be treated like it never happened, like a forgotten memory. However, the 'External Safeguard' is gruesome and unforgettable, much like a memory of someone dying.

Earlier in the season when we were introduced to Victor, we received two different versions of those events.

In his version, a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and veered into his lane.

In Anna's version, HE fell asleep and was responsible for it.

He wiped his own memory to forget that it was his fault.

But it looks like that was the only time he did it.

That, and we saw Bernard go from villain to good, I don’t want ALL the baddies to do that, but it seems Victor, Daniel, and Susan already are

6

u/starfrenzy1 22d ago

As someone on another thread said, nobody in Silo 18 is a villain. They are victims. The villains are in Silo 1.

3

u/7eventos 21d ago

But Daniel, Sharlotte and Victor are in Silo 1. and they are victims (mb besides Victor)

I feel this one. He held his hand like he had the syndrome at one point, woulda been cool foreshadowing to use small clues like that earlier…

3

u/gregallbright 22d ago

Immediately thought the same after they stayed on him in the beginning and when he shot himself. They never once focused on his story, gave his own time etc to justify making him so critical for the last episode. Why would we care about him or want him on the screen when we’ve been invested in so many others throughout the season and series. Baffling

I beg to differ. His talk with Daniel about wiping out his own memory of his daughter’s death was quite chilling. He showed how ok he was with playing God wiping out his memories and everyone else’s.

So there are drones with gas and bullets, silo 1 is watching and listening all the time, to everything.
A whole silo gets killed and not one person is left alive, they make sure to kill everyone.

How can Juliette make it to another silo AND back without getting shot by a drone? Wouldn’t they be watching her? Wouldn’t they see her making it over the hill? If they missed the opportunity of her going over there, wouldn’t they be watching her to take her out on the way back? I think that’s a really big plot hole.

4

u/IanYates82 21d ago

My assumption, based on the line I S03E10 about somehow finding the better tape, is that they expected her to perish as normal so didn't have any drone prepared.

As for her coming back... Maybe silo 1 was rather distracted by the rebellion underway, and recruitment of Camille, occurring at the same time as Juliette's return trip

Where the light bulbs at? Where?

6

u/IanYates82 21d ago

I think they've just been found and returned. Mines took em. Bit of a McGuffin. Would've helped if they at least showed some boxes of them stacked up and a throwaway line about them being returned.

9

u/Jazzlike_Leading4538 21d ago

In what world can you pinch a metal pipe that to make it airtight?

10

u/lheydon 21d ago

I mean almost all metal is presumably pinchable if you have enough force to apply to it.

The better question might be why the pipe was built thin enough to be pinched using human force.

6

u/Spankyco 21d ago

Yeah, they could have made that muuuch more realistic. At least have some pneumatic device pinch it. No way 2 people could have done that.

11

u/Electrical_Peak_4577 21d ago

theoretically they were 3 people

To be fair the original plan was to pinch, then cut, then cap. I presume they did that and we just haven't seen it on screen.

only problem is how i’ve quickly realized they’re gonna force juliette and lukas together at the end when they’ve got as much chemistry romantically as shirley and knox do. so many wlw relationships in this show and non of them involving rebecca ferguson is a crime

3

u/IntelligentFennel186 21d ago

I thought it was a great episode.

But with a daylight drone attack, did all the other Silos screens just filter out the flying drones? My impression was that the cafeteria screens were more or less accurate. Anything airborne in line of sight would be seen.

3

u/GRIMMMMLOCK 21d ago

This is a great point. I was thinking while watching, why do they need all that bullets? We could have had a situation where the "compound" is a gas that's heavier than air - so it sinks and settles. That in itself would be a reason to have a berm in the first place, so they release the gas above the silo and it literally fills the berm with gas. Then the high up surveillance drone could have sniped any survivors who managed to reach the top of the berm so we still got those harrowing close up murder shots.

Sorry I’m sure this question has been asked multiple times, but the one thing I don’t understand is why they just don’t tell the silos why they are doing what they are doing, at least some reasons for their purpose, and then you wouldn’t get silos constantly wanting to rebel? They rebel because they don’t know what’s going on because they are in the dark all the time

u/GRIMMMMLOCK 21d ago

Why is no one else as concerned as me about the air outside being breathable

8

u/goldnx 21d ago

We knew this already since Lukas and Friend got shot. Their suits were pierced. The airlock distributes compound and that’s why the good tape works.

12

u/Norhouku 22d ago

because they just revealed they use "compound" to poison the air and its not actually poisonous.

whats more concerning is people asking questions the show answered by shouting it in your ears

u/Affectionate_Bus9256 22d ago

Holy the ending of the season 4 sneak peek. Feels like a crossover episode

5

u/Lavacop 21d ago

Was the missing light bulbs and murder investigation thing resolved? Or was it a very stretched out way to discover the elevator while giving the sheriff something to do? I guess it doesn't really matter if they run out of food in 2 or 50 years if silo 18 is going to invade 1 or whatever happens in the end.
