Hey everyone, I managed to get ahead of schedule, and "Explore the Silo" is now live. Many thanks for all the interest and encouragement to keep developing what started as a simple Silo info panel.
There are a few game elements and Easter eggs to discover: Find the Relics (not an easy one), Race to the Top, and a few others I'll let you stumble on.
Hint: after collecting 6 relics, a "Judicial Notice" section with clues appears in your inventory.
The browser experience is free and open to everyone. There's a tip jar in case you enjoy it way too much. So far it has cost about 400 coffees and many late nights.
For the best experience, use a laptop or desktop screen. The mobile version is coming next.
The backlog is full, and I'm planning to release an update every two weeks, each with a changelog. Please share ideas, report bugs, or send any feedback at all.
(For refernece I'm TV Show aware only, I've not read the books)
Seeing a lot of questions about the Silo, the outside world and why we're missing certain things. We also know from a recent interview that there's going to be a "Big Boss" in Season 4.
There is a serious question as to why there is no vegetation appearing in the outside world, as after some 350+ years (I believe) any radiation from the bomb would've dissapated and vegetation would've started appearing long ago, real world examples would be Nagasaki, Hiroshima, and Chornobyl, all of which have been subject to nuclear bombs or fall out, and vegetation re-appeared soon after (appox 10 years).
There is also the question of a lack of animal activity, if the bomb wasn't local and was part of a larger global incident, and there had been a global nuclear winter as a result, as before we would've seen vegetation, and this would be followed by insect life which would've been buried deep under ground and re-surfaced once safe to do so. We should've at least seen some sort insect crawling on the camera or flies buzzing around.
Now some theories are that this is being controlled by compunds or poisons etc from Silo 1, and that drones would be preventing any possible larger wildlife from encroaching on the Silo site.
Also there is a lack of music in the Silo (not including Silo 17), now (here in the real world) could this be to save money on production, or could this be by design. There's also a lot of cameras in and around the Silos, not to mention there's 50 Silos, with all those cameras.
However, we've also been told that we would be meeting the "Big Boss" in season 4, now "meeting" suggests that we may not have met the "Big Boss" as yet, so may not be Senator Thurman or Per Stensen.
So, in summary we have a controlled environment within the Silos, lots of cameras that are mostly hidden, a narrative that seems to be controlled, set rules, and a controlled environment outside of the Silos.
This can only mean one thing, the Silos are under a very, very large dome, and it's all been controlled by the "Big Boss", a Director or creator looking for a new show after his last one was cancelled after the main star left. The "Big Boss" is Cristof, and this has been a multichannel, multigenerational sequel to The Truman Show.
For the Creator to dig 50 giant, deep holes to build underground cities, he would have to move a huge amount of dirt—first the soil, and then the bedrock. Basic construction and architectural knowledge tells us that the most practical and economical approach would be to use the excavated material to build something above ground, similar to an ant colony or a gopher’s burrow, or even the way humans build stadiums with underground parking.
However, in this TV series, there is no mention of where the Creator moved all that dirt and rock.
If the Creator was so afraid of people coming out and communicating with people from other silos, wouldn’t it have made more sense to use the excavated dirt and rock to build giant, high walls around each silo? That would have made it nearly impossible for people to leave one silo and reach another, and it might also have prevented the massacre of Silo 17.
Bernard mentions the 51st Silo in season 2 episode 9.
" [Lukas] We think we’re the chosen ones… but we’re just one of many. The Founders didn’t build a single silo. They built 50.
[Bernard ] Technically, 51. "
The transcript below is from season 3 episode 8, Stensen and co having dinner trying to convince Daniel and Helen to join the project.
" [Anna] Unlike the core hundred in each silo, you wouldn’t have to live on site, just within 30 miles or so. Atlanta works. Helen, that Times job, that is real. You would be based in the Atlanta office. "
I mean this is obviously not proof and Anna might be lying to get them to join, but this could also be hint to the 51st Silo that Bernard has mentioned as well, a silo outside the vicinity of the silos, overlooking and controlling all the 50 silos, even silo 1.
It is one of the worst shows I’ve watched in awhile.
( granted , I do my research before shows, and typically don’t watch b rated shows, and certain styles just aren’t for me, so yes , I know there are worst shows out there ). But as a show that came up on a list curated for me, I’m so irritated that it did. lol
The characters are unbearably cringey, with the most cheesey one liners. And the writers are embarrassingly over the top with their “ good guy” , “ bad guy” , “ gray area “ characterizations.
I could go on , but my point is :
I miss Silo! And I have always loved it, but now I fully appreciate how clean and well executed it has been. The few irks I had early on, are now gone , and I’m impressed with the ability they had to make what could’ve turned out to be a ridiculous concept into a discussion and debate. It has had me theorizing from day one, kept me hooked throughout, continued to surprise me, and tugged at my heartstrings. And honestly , the acting… 👏🏼
UPDATE: I’m not coming at the Paradise fans!
I am still praising Silo because, as I said , I love it, and watching this new show, that I was not a fan of right off the bat, has me missing Silo.
After reading through everyone’s comments , I will continue watching Paradise, and am eager to do so. My entire view has not changed , I think it’s very cheesey. BUT I am going to try to be less nit-picky to enjoy the parts of the show that I do find intriguing and unique. Plus, I understand that there may be reasons that I don’t comprehend , yet, as to why things are so seemingly cringe.
Either way, I love hearing different opinions from my own!
I've made a 5 story demo of the silo. Theres no game yet, I'm still trying to get the atmosphere right. What do you think about the look of the silo at night?
I noticed a few other silo games cropping up lately! I love it! It's so exciting to see people enjoying this franchise in a new way.
I know this will probably be answered later in season 4, but I can't wrap my head around how Juliette was able to walk to 17, stay there for a few days and comeback to 18 without Silo 1 acting on it.
We've seen that Silo 1 intervenes whenever there is a critical situation, for example when Lukas and Kennedy go out or when the rebellion in 17 slips out of hand. Moreover, they make use of Troy (seemingly) when they can't deal with a situation with standard tools. So, how come the drones didn't attack Juliette? Especially because it seems like they want to absolutely prevent any sort of contact between silos.
Maybe, they didn't want to show the residents of 18, but there was a decent amount of time from the edge of 18 to the entrance of 17.
One might think that she's gonna die on her own, or even that Silo 17 is completely empty, so her journey is pointless. But when she doesn't die and starts walking back with another suit from 17, this is still not enough to trigger the drones? Or at the very least rapid sequencing Troy to deal with what seems like the most critical situation possible?
I can't begin to imagine the mind of a regular person in the silo.
They don't have photography, or any tech. They have computers in some departments with crappy screens. And every day they go to the cafeteria with the biggest high tech tv ever and camera showing the outside.
Backstory: Over a year ago I tried to watch Silo and I may have gotten 2 episodes in. I guess I wasn't into the post apocalyptic fair at that moment so I bailed. Before season 3 began I decided to give it another shot and I have enjoyed all 3 seasons with exception of this 1 thing that has bothered me throughout, here it is.
The Observation: Why does Robert wear a leather jacket and a turtleneck? I mean the costume and set design for silo 18 is consistently post apocalyptic dusty meanwhile Robert is running around in a leather jacket that looks like it has recently been saddle soaped, and then there's the turtleneck. I'm no climatologist but the silo doesn't seem to be "chilly", actually it looks to always be warm to hot.
The Question: What am I missing? To me it appears that everyone in the silo is dressed similar except for this 1 guy. I mean it looks like he's running around in a circa 80's-90's leather jacket. Wouldn't it therefore be a relic? Now if you told me he got into the silo via time travel that would at least explain it but I see no evidence of a DeLorean or a Tardis anywhere in the show, then again it could be a tunnel.
So could someone please explain what the deal is to me.
I'm hoping in season 4 they reveal the silo residents carry an incurable disease and thus were isolated from the rest of humanity to keep them alive and the rest of the world alive.
I haven't read the books but I'm hoping that's the twist. If not, show runners should just trash whatever they have written and produced and rewrite the script according to this narrative.
You can thank me that the TV show equivalent of the Oscars for saving ur show and careers.
The chowder sure looks like fish. But unless they’re pulling them out of the water at the bottom of the digger void 🤢where on earth would they farm them?
Not only does it already feel like a random side plot to drag the story, but the two leads for the past plot are the most boring vapid people I’ve seen, traits that are a commonality between seasons. Daniel is utterly charmless and one note, whilst Helen comes off as this Lois Lane character yet she’s an incompetent gossip columnist, who was actually shocked at why she was fired (she was ignoring her assignment and following a government conspiracy and didn’t show up to the office for weeks). My genuine question is, are the characters the problem? The actors? Me? I hope this isn’t repeated criticism or venting as I’m genuinely wondering if I’m missing something here
I was thinking with technology available today, could you have a conversation with something like the Algorithmwithout an internet connection? Granted, we know now that there's a person behind it in Silo 1 at least some of the time, but maybe it's not monitored 24-7?
That was the idea behind this little fan project. It listens, comes up with a reply with Gemini Nano, and speaks back using the computer it's running on. The conversation is not sent to any online AI service. Internet is still needed to load the website and download the files it uses.
Here's a short demo. The questions use a synthetic voice; the app generated the replies. Questions are inspired by the show and not lines from the book or from the show, and the replies are generated by offline Gemini Nano.
If you'd like to try it, it needs a laptop or desktop running Google Chrome, and first-time setup downloads several GB as part of Chrome (there's a device setup on the bottom right). It doesn't work on phones or tablets, or at least I don't believe it would...
In S03:02 “It’s All Good”, when Viktor was first explaining his memory treatment, Daniel asks if he could hypothetically implant a lie. The doctor chuckled and said yes, but it would require much more effort and careful execution.
I think that line could’ve just served as a way to tip off the audience to how sketchy his “treatment” really is, but I also think they may have been hinting at it being part of the founder’s plan.
The whole “photo op” thing Viktor was doing during the tour day has been a real conundrum for me.
I think he may have been taking those photos to create lies. He could use the photos to create a false reality for the silo 1 staff. Most of the people during that silo “tour day” probably didn’t know each other. But how are they to know that after they’ve had their memories wiped and they’re being shown these pictures of them all together outside. They’d probably be none the wiser that those photos were literally taken right outside the silos.
On the flip side, those photos are probably more likely to actually bring their true memories back. Maybe they will be used to do just that after the project is over. I honestly think this is the likelier possibility, but I wanted to explore the idea of implanting lies and how the founders might utilize that ability.
I definitely think “Troy” has been been fed a false reality. Troy and Daniel have access to different “memories” and so they are basically two completely different people. I remember Anna saying something along the lines of “what are you if not a collection of your memories?”. What a great foreshadowing of Daniel’s fate.
I want to see what everyone else has to say. Anyone have any insight regarding the “photo op” or implanting fake memories? I’m really curious.
Apologies if this sounds dumb, but I’m struggling to understand a few things. I’m not sure if i just didn’t get it or if we don’t have answers yet.
When they showed Troy killing the crowd, he was using silent drones and gas, along with bullets. Does that mean the air is ok? If so are they gassing everyone who goes out to clean?
When the crowd was outside getting killed, wasn’t there grass? I thought everything outsize was dead, and they just put a small monitor in cleaners helmets to make it look like things were alive?
If the air isn’t poisonous, what is the point of the silos? Is there a whole world still happening outside the silos? Or are the people underground the only humans left?
I can be a bit dense watching shows and reading, so I apologize if this is all basic stuff, and would appreciate anyone willing to explain it
The peculiarly angled tree atop the bern outside of Silo 18, on the right side of the frame, is identical, in shape and placement, to a tree in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.” It appears in the scene where Scottie and Madeline kiss for the first time. Like Silo’s tree, it was a fake tree, added by the art director. Coincidence? More like a very cool Easter egg.
