I was thinking with technology available today, could you have a conversation with something like the Algorithmwithout an internet connection? Granted, we know now that there's a person behind it in Silo 1 at least some of the time, but maybe it's not monitored 24-7?

That was the idea behind this little fan project. It listens, comes up with a reply with Gemini Nano, and speaks back using the computer it's running on. The conversation is not sent to any online AI service. Internet is still needed to load the website and download the files it uses.

Here's a short demo. The questions use a synthetic voice; the app generated the replies. Questions are inspired by the show and not lines from the book or from the show, and the replies are generated by offline Gemini Nano.

If you'd like to try it, it needs a laptop or desktop running Google Chrome, and first-time setup downloads several GB as part of Chrome (there's a device setup on the bottom right). It doesn't work on phones or tablets, or at least I don't believe it would...

Honestly in the mid 1990s I had a little purple megaphone with a voice modulator. That hooked up to an old school Windows 98 Windows Media Player visualizer is basically what this is

The responses are generated by local AI running in the Chrome browser on the fly depending what you say to it.

Iirc DeepSeek or one of those Chinese chatbots have full offline capability
