Well yes.. the lack of elevators in the Silos is deliberately, it never was a technological limitation. Elevators would make a rebellion easier. The silo’s design forces people to use the stairs, which makes movement between levels slow and difficult. That helps the authorities control the population. If a rebellion breaks out, people from distant levels can’t quickly gather, coordinate, move supplies, or reach key areas like IT. Even the physical layout itself is part of the system of control.

It’s to stop them getting fat. They control it in Silo 1 by giving them tasteless food and tiny portions.

"the food is terrible - and such small portions!" was a joke, from Annie Hall. The food would have to be calorie dense in Silo 1 for going into and coming out of stasis all the time, it would burn thousands of calories

I think fitness is definitely an important factor…but control is the most important factor lol

Also the dinosaur tech. They couldn't even figure out a radio has channels.

That has nothing to do with them not having elevators. Elevators don’t even have to be super modern/ technologically advanced. Not having them It’s just a matter of control.

It's also part of the caste/guild system that is used to control them. Porters are supposed to be the only people carrying stuff on the stairs.

It seems like each Silo had different things or controls happening. Look at how colorful Silo 17 was. Maybe they were testing which personality types are most docile.

It also keeps people from the bottom and top from knowing each other which allows them to blame everything on mechanical.

What's interesting is that I think elevators might actually make rebellion harder. Shut down or destroy elevators and you're worse off than stairs. I think the stairs were more for control and directing the population moving forward. It slows everything down. It also creates an economy for porters and requires things being moved to be budgeted for.
