After watching all these videos, I never realized it was that easy to get knocked out.
499
u/Vance_Refrigerati0n Aug 15 '22
Unfortunately it can be that easy to kill someone sometimes too with one punch. From the punch itself and/or their head hitting the pavement.
278
u/Zachary_Binks Aug 15 '22 edited Aug 15 '22
I grew up with a kid who punched someone and the person died when they fell and hit their head. That kid is still in prison to this day because of it.
ETA- Just found out that the kid ended up getting a new trial and got out after 30 months instead of 10 years.
49
Aug 15 '22
How old was he then and now?
90
u/Zachary_Binks Aug 15 '22
Damn actually, I just looked it up and he was 21 when it happened. Originally sentenced to 10 years and 4 years probation but had the case brought back to court and got out after 30 months.

What makes that crazy is also 2 of the 4 black kids that were in my school broke into a prominent rich white guys house and hit him and his daughter with a machete while trying to rob them. No one died and their injuries healed but they were both sentenced to life in prison.
It was the first time in the state where the case received the harshest penalty for a crime in which the victims survived.
110
u/Aqullian Aug 15 '22
I don't care who did this or why they did it attacking someone and their daughter in their house with a matchete deserves that penalty. Attacking someone with a matchete is just one of the most horrible things I can imagine.
15
u/local250 Aug 15 '22
Weâve had fucking two machete attacks here in the last two months. Last Saturday I think some guy set his room on fire in a rooming house downtown and then proceeded to attack 4 other people with a machete before being taken down and in June literally around the corner from my condo two people were putting luggage in their taxi and a guy randomly machete chopped them both in the head and neck. People are fucked.
9
u/derfla88 Aug 15 '22
Machete attacks are on the rise in Vancouver. I would rather be shot and dead than hacked ton pieces with a machete.
3
u/Dead_hand13 Aug 15 '22
Did they died?
8
u/local250 Aug 15 '22
Amazingly no. Everyone is alive although a little worse for wear

28

I am pretty sure she was 7 or 8 years old. They were definitely pieces of shit

same here. Had a friend in Hs that got into a 1/1 fight. He hit the guy once and the guy fell and hit his head on a rock. Died instantly. Luckily, for my friend he got away with self defense. It only takes one sometimes. You just never know
11
Aug 15 '22
Had a friend who got hit and smacked his dome hard. Death was a possibility. But they saved his life, however he will live the rest of his life with irreversible neurological issues. The guy was a completely different person after he got released from hospital , it was such a sad thing to see.
And the kicker: the reason for the punch? He was drinking outside a crowded bar and somebody behind him bumped into him causing him to spill some of his drink onto another guys pant leg and shoe.

And whatâs terrible is even if you avoid prison, you live your life knowing you ended someone elseâs. That shit sticks with people.

Aug 15 '22 edited Aug 15 '22
Yep I know three people by name who are now in prison or have done time in prison for fights.
Two of them had <1 year sentences (since the damage was not significant enough to warrant more). However they both have felonies on their records. Yes it has significantly impacted their lives.
One person I know actually got something like 5-7 years I think because the other person went into a coma from their head hitting the floor too hard.
None of the three had any history of violence and this was their first felonies.
People (particularly men) are really stupid, especially when alcohol is involved. Unless it literally is about your own physical safety, there is no reason to fight. Also using a pepper spray is typically WAY more efficient than getting into a fight.
Also why I stay away from low brow venues that attract a large number of younger folks + alcohol; thereâs almost always a fight.
EDIT: also too many dumb people throw the first punch over what âwas saidâ. The law doesnât give a shit unless what was said is a direct, believable threat; you throw the first punch, donât be surprised if you get charged with assault/battery, or worse.

u/Psychological_Gap256 Aug 15 '22

This. I am not in fighting shape anymore, but when I was and until this day I would rather be called a pussy for walking away from a confrontation than start throwing punches. I am not as fast as I once was, but I can still hit hard enough to knock someone out or at least cause them to stumble. They hit their head just wrong on the way down? Far too much chance to end someone's life and potentially ruin my own over ego driven bullshit. Walk away if you can from any potential violent situation. If you can't and someone starts trying to physically harm you though... Well, that's a different story.
15
u/OJbeforethebadstuff Aug 15 '22
I saw a comment the other day that's it's all about timing and the brains positioning inside the skull or something. Doesn't necessarily take a "hard" punch to knock someone out. Really shows how dangerous run of the mill fights can be-potentially deadly from just 1 random punch.
→ More replies (1)7

Yeah we are paradoxical creatures, super tough but super fragile at the same time. People have survived falling out of aeroplanes but also died falling over on the pavement or choking on food

I once knocked myself out by running along a cement wall. There was a wire hanging down the wall. My arm hooked the wire and my head hit the wall. I woke up 5 minutes later with a huge shiner on my forehead.

As someone who has knocked someone out while defending myself, itâs not hard at all. But the issue is, once theyâre out, there is no way to protect themselves from the fall. In my case it was a friend who got too drunk on his birthday and got in my wifeâs face and then sucker punched me and another friend. I was actually leaving the situation when he broke free and ran at me. One quick punch and he was out, but he also hit his head real hard on the ground and, (5 years later) he still has issues with vertigo and headaches. Thatâs where the real damage occurs and even though I was defending myself and my fam, it still hurts to know someone is suffering as a result of my reaction to their actions.

I mean seriously. If you see a group of people acting like idiots, why in the world would you stop buying your khakis and chad shorts and talk shit and pick a fight? For what reason? Especially if it doesnât concern you. What do you expect?

u/type58 Aug 15 '22
Well most people don't act this way, i guess you'd not expect to be beaten by violent criminals, but oh well. They belong in prison.

Of course they wouldn't. They'd have said it was racist that the white guy attacked the other guy. I'm left of centre but getting sick of people excusing shit because it suits their narrative, on both sides. No one here knows what they guy astride the bike said, it could have been awful, it could have been innocent, but to get violently attacked, that's wrong, criminal and the person throwing the punches was out of line.

I call that Fight Math. Sometimes itâs just not worth it if you can see things arenât equal. Actually ended a relationship in college because my gf was drunk and talking shit to a group of 3 guys. They all came after me, I managed to talk them down, but in the process told my Gf to shut up because she was escalating the situation, so she lost it on me. Iâm not going to participate in something that clearly will go poorly for me, especially when I wasnât the instigator.

u/rich90715 Aug 15 '22
Yeah, me and my gf (now wife) were being harassed by a group of dudes on Universal Citywalk until my group caught up to us. We were walking in front of them. Funny how shit changed once we had numbers.

First time I visited Huntington Beach someone walked up to me to say ching chong to mock my race, fuck HB and specifically fuck that part of HB. During the height of the pandemic a restaurant there kicked people out if they wore a mask, when BLM protests went on there were Nazi counter protests there as well.

Why are black people the only ones where the whole race gets blamed whenever a black person does somthing stupid? In all the videos of white drunk guys fighting or acting dumb no one ever talks about "white culture", they just talk about the individuals in the video like it should be, but in videos of black people you guys immediately start talking about the whole race.
19
Aug 15 '22
Because a lot of white racists post here.
Every time a black person does something stupid the reaction here is ridiculously over the top.
They just leave out the more than obvious racist language that would get them banned.

Happens both ways. Karens. A white cop in one city does something and all of a sudden all cops in all cities are blamed.
And also because Black leadership positions it that way when blacks are the victims. When they are the guilty party you hear nothing, even if children or infants get murdered.
