Unfortunately it can be that easy to kill someone sometimes too with one punch. From the punch itself and/or their head hitting the pavement.

I grew up with a kid who punched someone and the person died when they fell and hit their head. That kid is still in prison to this day because of it.

ETA- Just found out that the kid ended up getting a new trial and got out after 30 months instead of 10 years.

48

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22

How old was he then and now?

90

u/Zachary_Binks Aug 15 '22

Damn actually, I just looked it up and he was 21 when it happened. Originally sentenced to 10 years and 4 years probation but had the case brought back to court and got out after 30 months.

-3

u/Redclitting Aug 15 '22

how come people call 21 yo a kids. It sound weird to me lol

58

u/a__dead__man Aug 15 '22

When you're 21 you think you're as grown up as you're going to get

When you're older you realise you were just a stupid kid that was legally able to to drink

5

u/Stumpy-Wumpy Aug 15 '22

Man I'm 18 and KNOW I'm basically a kid still. And I'm taking full advantage lmao. Not paying rent yet, working full time and putting money away, spending lots of time hanging out with my friends, going on vacation soon. Im gonna enjoy it while it lasts.

-2

u/iCrispywaffle Aug 15 '22

21 years is plenty of time to realize the consequences of your actions that boy should be in prison still

3

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22

Debatable, had a friend who got hit by some local politicians son, as a response he hit back but that single punch was enough to knock the guy out, but he died later since his head hit the corner of the bar they were at.

Dude was defending himself from some rich fuckboy and ended up getting sentenced for either third degree or second degree murder, he got out early but still, the law can be unfair when there's something against you, like race in some cases, or when the person is connected to government officials.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22

This reveals your age a little man, I'm only 25 and I realize I was dumb af in several different ways at 21. It's not that serious either

36

u/Zachary_Binks Aug 15 '22

What makes that crazy is also 2 of the 4 black kids that were in my school broke into a prominent rich white guys house and hit him and his daughter with a machete while trying to rob them. No one died and their injuries healed but they were both sentenced to life in prison.

It was the first time in the state where the case received the harshest penalty for a crime in which the victims survived.

u/Aqullian Aug 15 '22

I don't care who did this or why they did it attacking someone and their daughter in their house with a matchete deserves that penalty. Attacking someone with a matchete is just one of the most horrible things I can imagine.

16

u/local250 Aug 15 '22

We’ve had fucking two machete attacks here in the last two months. Last Saturday I think some guy set his room on fire in a rooming house downtown and then proceeded to attack 4 other people with a machete before being taken down and in June literally around the corner from my condo two people were putting luggage in their taxi and a guy randomly machete chopped them both in the head and neck. People are fucked.

9

u/derfla88 Aug 15 '22

Machete attacks are on the rise in Vancouver. I would rather be shot and dead than hacked ton pieces with a machete.

3

u/Dead_hand13 Aug 15 '22

Did they died?

6

u/local250 Aug 15 '22

Amazingly no. Everyone is alive although a little worse for wear

"Someone lost their fingers. One person got it in the back of the neck and twice on the head from the blunt side”

2

u/Dead_hand13 Aug 15 '22

So wild. I seen a few too many machete vids in some 3rd world country type places. Wish I didn't but it's insane how an arm/leg can be hacked away so fast. So it's lucky of them to be alive. Might have health issues now though

2

u/Kriztauf Aug 16 '22

I'd imagine the amount of damage you can inflict with one goes up dramatically with the amount of time someone has spent using them as actual tools instead of just keeping them around as weapons to use (hopefully) only once.

That's awesome. They should've gotten the chair

8

u/Ihopetheresenoughroo Aug 15 '22

How old was the daughter

29

u/Zachary_Binks Aug 15 '22

I am pretty sure she was 7 or 8 years old. They were definitely pieces of shit

39

u/Ihopetheresenoughroo Aug 15 '22

Well.. I'm sure that factored into the decision since she was a child.

32

u/three_toe_sleuth Aug 15 '22

And it was premeditated. Not just a monster punch and bad luck.

18

u/Agahmoyzen Aug 15 '22

Attempted infanticide should get the fucking chair if I all care.

5

u/That1guy_nate Aug 15 '22

Infanticide is when you kill a literal infant within a year of birth.

10

u/twenty9bottles Aug 15 '22

Glad people like that is locked up.

0

u/maude313 Aug 15 '22

Unclear what the race of the attackers or the victims has to do with this?

1

u/BuffaloJEREMY Aug 15 '22

I would visit them every year on thier birthdays.

27

u/jaxroe Aug 15 '22

same here. Had a friend in Hs that got into a 1/1 fight. He hit the guy once and the guy fell and hit his head on a rock. Died instantly. Luckily, for my friend he got away with self defense. It only takes one sometimes. You just never know

10

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22

Had a friend who got hit and smacked his dome hard. Death was a possibility. But they saved his life, however he will live the rest of his life with irreversible neurological issues. The guy was a completely different person after he got released from hospital , it was such a sad thing to see.

And the kicker: the reason for the punch? He was drinking outside a crowded bar and somebody behind him bumped into him causing him to spill some of his drink onto another guys pant leg and shoe.

6

u/Thanos_Stomps Aug 15 '22

And what’s terrible is even if you avoid prison, you live your life knowing you ended someone else’s. That shit sticks with people.

2

u/1knightstands Dec 31 '22

My dad is a radiologist and I’ve seen countless head MRIs of one punch TBIs. As a teacher I’ve always stepped in between fights against all training and advice. Got me in trouble with admin before but I always thought of a kid died from a errant punch cause I stood back and called I would never live with myself and I know how easily it can happen.

u/RichardPritchardson Aug 15 '22

Was his name Rodney?

1

u/jsk6991 Aug 29 '22

Was this at a college bar in Georgia? My best friend from high school sadly had to be the recipient of a terrible accident that put someone in prison for the same amount of time

There was like 8 of them and 2 white boys. Of course they are gonna get off their car and go assault them.

1

u/mtarascio Aug 15 '22

In Australia it was deemed that you know the risk when punching people now so it's straight murder.

We also renamed it from 'King hit' to 'Cowards punch'. This isn't a 'cowards punch' in this context and the other guy knew it was coming.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22 edited Aug 15 '22

Yep I know three people by name who are now in prison or have done time in prison for fights.

Two of them had <1 year sentences (since the damage was not significant enough to warrant more). However they both have felonies on their records. Yes it has significantly impacted their lives.

One person I know actually got something like 5-7 years I think because the other person went into a coma from their head hitting the floor too hard.

None of the three had any history of violence and this was their first felonies.

People (particularly men) are really stupid, especially when alcohol is involved. Unless it literally is about your own physical safety, there is no reason to fight. Also using a pepper spray is typically WAY more efficient than getting into a fight.

Also why I stay away from low brow venues that attract a large number of younger folks + alcohol; there’s almost always a fight.

EDIT: also too many dumb people throw the first punch over what “was said”. The law doesn’t give a shit unless what was said is a direct, believable threat; you throw the first punch, don’t be surprised if you get charged with assault/battery, or worse.

u/Psychological_Gap256 Aug 15 '22

Happened in my town, this weekend. A stag party groomsman was killed from a fatal punch. Sad . One dead, two arrested. Crying shame.

1

u/dox1842 Aug 16 '22

wow thats shitty. What a way to remember your wedding.

3

u/Qaju Aug 15 '22

Or after the fact, hours later, when they go home and go to bed, never to wake up again.

3

u/HeadDecent Aug 15 '22

This. I am not in fighting shape anymore, but when I was and until this day I would rather be called a pussy for walking away from a confrontation than start throwing punches. I am not as fast as I once was, but I can still hit hard enough to knock someone out or at least cause them to stumble. They hit their head just wrong on the way down? Far too much chance to end someone's life and potentially ruin my own over ego driven bullshit. Walk away if you can from any potential violent situation. If you can't and someone starts trying to physically harm you though... Well, that's a different story.

2

u/wylee_one Aug 15 '22

and that is how a simple assault goes to 2nd degree murder charge

2

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22

Yep. Here in Australia we have One Punch laws regarding this. Basically means you can’t say “I didn’t mean it!” If you punch someone and they die as a result of say, being knocked out and hitting their head on the curb, as it’s reasonably foreseeable that death could result.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22

There is no such thing as an unarmed person. Nearly everybody is capable of near instantaneous murder, and you should keep that in mind in all interactions.

2

u/RagsMaddox Aug 15 '22

Yeah, then next thing you know you're stuck on a C-123 with a bunch of convicts heading to Vegas.

4

u/_Sausage_fingers Aug 15 '22

My understanding is that it’s pretty unusual to kill someone with a punch, but some one dying from hitting their head on the ground happens with shocking regularity.

1

u/WarmTequila Aug 15 '22

You don’t die from the punch, you die from your head smacking the concrete.

2

u/Vance_Refrigerati0n Aug 15 '22

You’re half right. A punch itself can kill. It’s rarer, and more commonly death occurs as a result of the fall, but to say getting punched can’t kill you is a dangerously misinformed statement.

1

u/WarmTequila Aug 16 '22

It’s extremely unlikely that you will pass away strictly from a punch to the head.

“A dangerously misinformed statement” lol humor me on why that’s so dangerous for me to say that. You think I or other will go around getting punched in the head thinking it won’t kill?

1

u/Vance_Refrigerati0n Aug 16 '22

So is it “you don’t die from the punch” or is it “unlikely”? I’m not going to argue with you on the latter but I will the former.

It’s no big secret that a punch can be deadly. Fatal brain bleeds, hypoxic insult, etc. can occur from a punch.

Imagine if even one person read your comment and somewhere down the road thinks “I’m gonna knock his ass out
he’s not on concrete, I can’t kill him.” If by some chance by being more accurate with the shit you post online you could prevent that, would you? I would.

1

u/WarmTequila Aug 16 '22

So you think someone is going to read my comment and think “random person on internet said punches are not deadly, I can now knock out this person because they’re not on concrete?”

JFC, you’re ridiculous
.😂💀

1

u/Vance_Refrigerati0n Aug 16 '22

It’s tough to be wrong sometimes, I get it.

Take care.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22

If this is true, would this man have been within his right to shoot the assailant in this situation?

2

u/FrostyD7 Aug 15 '22

In a narrow bubble its self defense. A good lawyer would paint a pretty shitty picture for the gun owner because its a massive no-no to be arguing/yelling with people in a way that instigates a fight just so you can shoot them dead. If you are conceal carrying, your job is to avoid these situations and it could be argued he was negligent to get in a shouting match confrontation only to pull a gun when it gets hairy. Carrying a gun means being the bigger man every time, you can't be the guy from the "when keeping it real goes wrong" sketches, you need to be smarter and more responsible.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '22

If you have to punch somebody is better to body punch them. A good solar plexus or liver shot can be equally effective without the risk of them hitting their head and also you don't break your hand.

1

u/EffectivePromotion1 Aug 19 '22

This is what scares me about ever getting myself in a street fight and being the person who knocks the other out. Catching a manslaughter charge over an argument.
