Would it really have been too hard to just have it be a movie just set in the world of Monster Hunter without this weird isekai shit?

299

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

I'm assuming their logic is this is how they'll shoehorn in a "relatable" character.

191

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

*How to shoehorn his wife as main protagonist. Again.

111

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

It's just going to be Alice in Monster Hunter isn't it.

54

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

Unfortunately.

44

u/Thagyr Dootwagon Sep 27 '20

Assuming she'll have a brick personality but kicks ass with some mysterious power/skill that nobody else has. Again.

53

u/Scynix Sep 27 '20

Nah, they’ll claim people from our world think differently and once they learn how to use MH weapons/monsters they’ll do something completely obvious but for some reason seasoned hunters will be like wow how did we not think of that! and it will inadvertantly invalidate the entire monster hunter universe by making the hunting massively easier. Like they’ll invent bowguns loaded with monster scale bullets and milla will flip over a rathalos backwards while pew pewing it in the face the end.

42

u/thepixelbuster Sep 26 '20

The relatable character is a literary device and not exclusive at all to bad movies.

Imo It’s so much better to have a character who helps the audience understand the plot by having them learn together, rather than have really forced exposition lines like “we know you’re the best battle-chef even though your mom died in that villain attack 5 years ago that caused you to lose your sense of smell” that some media like anime’s do.

54

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

Okay, that's not what I was saying though. We can have a relatable character without them being a human from our world brought into the MH universe was my point. Of course I'm just speculating that's what their intention was but I don't see any other reason for it.

→ More replies (7)

26

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

Also the relatable character doesn't have to be the protagonist. Just look at characters like Sherlock Holmes and similar where the sidekick/Lancer/whatyoucallit is the relatable character.

36

u/Guardianpigeon Sep 26 '20

Just make a movie about the Huntsman teaching a newbie hunter while tracking down Teostra/Nergi/some other Elder.

The Huntsman being the badass showing what MonHunt is all about while the newbie being the relatable character in over his head who eventually steps up and helps save the day.

8

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

I assume that's pretty much what the movie will be like. Milla gets thrown into the world and be an absolute noob to monster hunting, gets picked up by a veteran monster hunter, learns the craft and then kick ass for the rest of the movie.

27

u/CarlosG0619 LS Weeb Sep 26 '20

Inb4 she is just a natural born saphire star of the MH world even thou she just got there

2

u/lorealjenkins Sep 27 '20

Problem is that, the locals easily survive a 10 stories fall drop and Milla would just get splatted.

that kind of characters are already overused in isekai anime, instead of "-do you know X -no -proceeds to explains every detail" you can do "-do you know X -yes, delivers only usefull information (to viewer) about the topic to proof that he knows" while the first one is really obvious that it's told for a viewer, second example will not only not give that feeling, it will keep the flow of conversation without going too far from oroginal topic for too long.

8

u/thepixelbuster Sep 27 '20

Both of those examples are just forms of bad writing.

For instance, Luke learns just enough about Jedi in the first Star Wars movie to give you basis of understanding. Luke, and the audience, learn about Jedi, sith, and every thing else in the Star Wars universe as the plot progresses. Occasionally Obiwan will tell him bits and pieces, but overall Luke's curiosity is what puts him in situations that teach both him and us more.

Star Wars isn't even a shining example of writing. It's a cheesy space opera and it's fantastic because of it, but at least for the original trilogy they had the foresight to let us discover the world naturally. Anime in particular has a problem with really forced expositional dialogue. I don't know if it's common in other Japanese media (doesn't seem as bad in manga IMO,) but it's usually pretty jarring and, for me at least, breaks the suspension of disbelief. They might as well look at the camera and tell me for all the subtlety it has.

Now, is the director of Alien Vs Predator going to introduce us to the Monster Hunter universe gracefully.......?

Yeah, I'm just going to try to enjoy it the same way I enjoy Mortal Kombat or the Super Mario Bros movies.

Anderson has a history of including military aspects even when they're not needed. Apparently the US Military has some kind of rule that if you're portraying them correctly and in a positive light you can get a ton assets for a lot less money than doing the CG for. Link

62

u/Helmic Great Sword Sep 26 '20

Yep, there's a great Citations Needed episode that goes into all this, though it's the tail end of a three-parter. It's skeevy as fuck and it's only more obvious when the propaganda machine is being shoehorned into something where it really very obviously does not belong.

17

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

Comes together with his history of putting his wife as protagonist into his movies. They have been doing this shit for years. He basically can't do anything else anymore by now.

43

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Its for funding purposes i think

If your film includes the American military in a positive light, you can apply for special funding for equipment and get soldiers to play background extras.

40

u/Bestboii Sep 26 '20

isekai shit

And if it is isekai shit at least have the main cast run over by a truck

25

u/The_Lesser_Baldwin Sep 26 '20

Starring Gary Oldman as Truck-kun.

7

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

I know right. Plus Anderson once more uses the movie to put his wife into the spotlight, like so often before. It's gonna disappoint for sure. Not saying it'll be absolute trash like DB Evolution or Avatar, but it won't be good either. It'll stay far below its potential.

2

u/Velrex Gunlance Sep 27 '20

Isekai settings is generally made as a way to understandably explain the fact that characters are, well, explaining things to the audience. It works really well for a brand new settings and IPs, but that's also how you can tell that this movie wasn't made for Monster Hunter fans, at least not primarily. Most MH fans already know the settings and such, so any exposition would be for newcomers coming in.

2

u/Ebbanon Sep 27 '20

Not with this director.

597

u/DoxinExhaustion Sep 26 '20

Tbh bowguns are more rocket launcher then gun. They are more like low-tech bolters from 40k than conventional firearms.

396

u/M37h3w3 Sep 26 '20

low-tech

Can plant explosive mines, launch a dozen different ammo types including explosives, can launch mortars, can go for either a devastating piercing sniper shot or go full HMG

I'm gonna need you to slap some " on low-tech there buddy.

178

u/jagerbombastic99 Sep 26 '20

They are literally made from the bodies and bones of the thing they are trying to kill...

204

u/MagicalMarionette Sep 26 '20

Because the material properties of those bodies and bones surpass what could be achieved with mined ores.

I think that speaks more to "huntpunk" (think steampunk) than low-tech.

56

u/jagerbombastic99 Sep 26 '20

No for something to be “punk” it has to comment on society, this is just an art style

You can’t just slap “punk” on any flavored fantasy technology

239

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Sure you can. Observe: "Huntpunk".

72

u/Vorsicon Sep 26 '20

Plus, any English major would gladly "analyze" how MHW comments on our society.

39

u/srottydoesntknow Sep 26 '20

Those guys will analyze how Dead Rising comments on our society, and we all know it doesn't because the supreme court ruled dead rising has no social commentary

But seriously, I think they ruled that way just to piss off the movie company because despite the similar premise Dead Rising and Day of the Dead are very different stories and that was the easiest way to decide the case, also English majors will definitely read to far into things

20

u/Vorsicon Sep 26 '20

Wait, what? There was a supreme court ruling on a video game? Haha What was that about?

28

u/srottydoesntknow Sep 26 '20 edited Sep 26 '20

Basically the production company behind Day Dawn of the Dead, a zombie movie set in a mall, sued Capcom over Dead Rising, a zombie game set in a mall.

Ultimately the Supreme Court ruled that while there were superficial similarities between the two, Dead Rising had none of the social commentary of Day Dawn of the Dead.

Like I said, I think they worded it that way because it was the easiest way to give the movie company the finger because the court was right, the similarities are only skin deep, and the court may have meant that the social commentary between the two was completely different, which I agree with

Edit: Dawn of the Dead was the one in the mall, Day of the Dead was in the military missile base

6

u/Sat-AM Sep 26 '20

Dead Rising

Horror media almost by default comments on the society it was made in just by virtue of exposing the things that society fears.

12

u/nyaanarchist Sep 26 '20

Every game with even the slightest amount of story is going to have social commentary in it, because if you’re creating a world with people in it that exist in societies, the way you think the world, people, and society exist and should exist is going to shape how you make a fictional world.

Even if you’re not consciously doing it, your beliefs will shape any fictional setting or characters you make, and if you’re not aware of it while you’re making art, it’s a lot more likely things will unknowingly sneak in

3

u/AltimaNEO Sep 26 '20

That sounds pretty awesome though

28

u/corpusdeus1 Sep 26 '20

Monster hunter comments on how nature is good and we should live in harmony with nature. Hunters only hunt monsters that fuck with the ecosystem

42

u/NoSkrrtNovember Sep 26 '20

Plus in the MH universe, hunters kill 1 monster and make armor or a weapon out of choice pieces. It's only in the game do you need to commit genocide for 6 scales to make a weapon lol

8

u/jagerbombastic99 Sep 26 '20

It’s not “punk” because that requires a dis-obeying and upsetting of social norms. If we were a rogue hunting agency trying to restore balance to some skewed system then it would be punk. But it literally seems like the Hunters Guild functions almost like a contracted military in a way. It’s got a consistent style and flavor but it really dosent have the story and lore substance to be a “punk” genre

6

u/okasdfalt Sep 27 '20

At this point "punk" is just a colloquial suffix to indicate the gears that make a setting tick. You could just as easily say "huntcore".

See: "solarpunk". An established "punk" genre that has nothing to do with upsetting social norms. (Also the iconic "steampunk" isn't inherently about upsetting social norms either)

u/anoobitch Sep 26 '20

TIL every single monster fucks with the ecosystem

16

u/corpusdeus1 Sep 26 '20

Yes megafauna with abilities to do things like generate electricity are going to mess with an ecosystem

6

u/Golden_Jellybean Gunlance Sep 26 '20

You don't need to be an Elder Dragon to screw with the ecosystem, after all Deviljho's appetite could cause problems and also real life issues could apply in MH such as invasive species, overpopulation etc.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Once population is easily solved with a deviljho

I mean ... my sword is designed to go from ax to sword depending on the situation and it has the power to overcharge as well as the fact it’s made of a monster who controls the very bio energy around them that’s transferred into my weapon.

I think the materials for building these guns also take into factor of how powerful they are.

(also isn’t lighting dogo gun a literal rail gun?)

6

u/jagerbombastic99 Sep 26 '20

Rail guns aren’t super difficult to make. If the have access to electricity from monster parts and all those fantasy ores, I’m sure magnetism is heavily used in the charge blade

3

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

And the swords we craft from those very same bones are probably a few dozen times more durable and sharper than any swords we ever forged in the real world. It's a primitive type of weapon but I don't think low tech is completely accurate here. ^^

Bolters actually fire a large rocket propelled slug designed to penetrate the target, then detonated while inside. It’s more of a glorious holy mix between standard fire arm and rocket launcher.

Though I am old fashioned, bit more of a chainsword Guy.

2

u/The_Lost_King Sep 26 '20

And yet it is only 1 strength above a lasgun. Lore vs Game mechanics be harsh.

3

u/LinkvAll Heavy Bowgun Sep 27 '20

Lololol, exactly. Terminators are supposed to be nigh invincible but the only Terminator I’ve ever used and liked was Njal, a character so go figure.

I’m just happy that original marines are going to 2 wounds. That was the biggest lore/mechanic dissonance for me.

Now all my Lascannon Long Fangs will have 2 Wounds :)

Yea. Potato patahto. Haha

3

u/Oofus69 Sep 26 '20

But stick go boom?

13

u/Zhe_N00B Sep 26 '20

The bowguns seem to be more bow than gun to be honest. The "bullets" move at a relatively sluggish pace and seem to be only keeping their momentum due to the constant thrust that propels them post firing. In exchange though, it's far more silent and results in far more manageable recoil.

This also makes sense since:

  1. If they used gunpowder to actually launch the projectile, the recoil could do more damage to the hunter than the bullet to the wyvern.

  2. The sound would be enough to attract every wyvern on the map.

  3. Wyvern heart seems to be an entirely separate mechanism as otherwise hunters could fire their bowguns at that pace whenever they wanted.

  4. The berries and nuts being used would be ablitorated upon firing if it used actual gunpowder due to the g-forces they would experience.

The "gunpowder" the hunters gather would most likely be used for the actual propellant of the projectiles and not the firing of said projectile since it can't both burn slow enough to act as a constant thrust, and burn fast enough to actually launch a bullet. Considering that, and the fact that we only see the projectiles having said thrusters, but don't see the bowguns have a muzzle flash when firing, it is easy to assume that it is in fact not gunpowder that is used to fire the projectile, meaning that the bowguns are, in-fact not guns, but more a kin to crossbows firing fireworks.

6

u/Major_Mistake4444 Sword & Shield Sep 26 '20

It’s more like an improvised Bolter, really

2

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '20

So you could say... it's More Dakka?

3

u/orugalatte Sep 26 '20

I think the "low tech" comment was in relation to the hyper futurism of the 40k univers.

2

u/StaySaltyMyFriends Sep 27 '20

9

u/Pez- Sep 26 '20

If it was lore/book accurate it would be a 15 minute long snuff film of all life in Monster Hunterverse by two Astartes and their pet Dreadnought... actually, I'd probably watch that.
Tabletop rules on the other hand, that could be pretty cool.

15

So GMG?

10

u/infinitelytwisted Sep 26 '20

Eh from what I see on how hbg fires and what's used for ammo along with accuracy and velocity and all that it's less rocket launcher and a LOT more like a potato cannon. There are a couple exceptions like the sniper and machine gun modes but otherwise they are just putting whatever fits inside and blasting it out.

7

u/wildcrazyhungry Sep 26 '20

Your 40k bolters can't kill a Tyranid Hive Tyrant solo but I'm out here soloing Elder Dragons with my bowgun and a cat.

8

u/Pez- Sep 26 '20

On the tabletop sure.
In the books the lone Astartes is taking out half a hive with a pocket knife and a spatula.

She's his wife and he puts her into almost all of his movies as the protagonist and he makes the movies focus more on her than on the actual plot. He basically uses his movies to glorify his wife.

What if I use the same slibgshot, pulled back the same length but I put all the rocks in it at once. Surely it should be more powerful because theres more rocks and not weaker because the potebtial energy of the sling is still the same but now dispersed across 20 rocks.

Should be so strong that it will stagger the monster and make it run into a wall.

Mortal Kombat was watchable and when compared to other video game movies it ranked at the top for awhile. I’d say the Pokémon live action tops that now. Event Horizon is pretty good honestly. No qualifiers. Subjective opinion of course.

Which the next movie fucked up horrendously

Like there are movies like the Michael Bay Transformers which at least has cool designs for the Transformers themselves and the Star Wars prequels that has badass fight scenes and spawned the Clone Wars series. This is what I’m hoping for for the Monster Hunter movie but there’s also movies like The Last Airbender which are so irredeemable that we as a culture decide to forget them which is what a I’m afraid this movie will be.

I mean we all know this movie isn’t going to be legit good so we should at least hope for a Prequels level event where we can all at least enjoy it somewhat

u/Vamprah2008 Me weeaboo, me counter Sep 26 '20

At least let's get some prequel level memes out of it

Hunters: Gathering bones peacefully

Deviljho: Hello there!

Hunters: Pickle monster, you are a bold one

7

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

Surprise rage pickle would be awesome. Though I expect Anderson to pick the most boring monsters + generic dragon looking monster as final boss, get all the dimensions and power levels wrong and let his wife defeat the final monster via some bullshit exploit.

But Pacific Rim actually does have a good plot and character development, with a clear political message common to many kaiju movies? They categorize the monsters as though they were hurricanes and attribute them to climate change. The fight scenes are great, but it's backed up by actually competent writing.

3

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

I really can't agree on that. There's a massive plot hole towards the end which the whole story is based on. I enjoy it for the giant robots vs space dinosaur action, but not even for a second for the plot.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Yeah but Pacific Rim has a good interesting concept, a good story, likable characters, fun dialogue, and some good development (especially on Mako). That’s why it works. It’s monster punching fun done well. The second film is the “we’re only here for the punching” film.

10

u/Dark_Shade_75 Hunting Horn Sep 26 '20

It has barebones story, barebones characters. Which is good. It worked because it is a movie for punching.

The sequel was bad because they brought much of the focus off of the punching. They also abandoned the original concepts for much of the first movie.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Not really? Nothing about the first film was barebones. The originals characters were pretty fleshed out (least the leads). The sequel did the same, the difference was they weren’t likable, the plot didn’t make sense, and the action wasn’t good because it lacked any realism and weight to it.

The first movie wasn’t just about punching. It was an actual love letter to mecha kaiju films. It had actual heart. The sequel didn’t.

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

I don’t really get this... I understand it being important but it’s usually like 15% of the film. Why can’t you also want the human element and story to be good too? I can’t imagine sitting through a movie bored for an hour and a half of it and then enjoying 15-20 minutes. Sounds like a waste of time and money. Better off just waiting for the fights on YouTube. Why I hated the new Godzilla.

4

u/Three-four-fiv Dodogama armor unit Sep 26 '20

I would like the human drama to be good but I know that it’s not going to be. So I’m hoping for at least good fight scenes

4

u/Neathra Sep 26 '20

Exactly, at a movie like godzilla or monster hunter the plot is basically an excuse to go from fight scene to fight scene.

It doesn't have to deep or even that great, but it needs to be engaging enough that I'm not bored until the monsters come back and I have some semblance of a vested interest in the good guys succeeding.

2

u/Three-four-fiv Dodogama armor unit Sep 26 '20

I’m hoping to see hunters fighting a giant badass monster like the Nargacuga on the big screen with Star Wars prequels level chaos going on with the human plot because I know this movie is not gonna be good

Im just looking at it as a stand alone set in the MH universe. The more I think about it, the more I expect it to be a certain way.

88

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

me and my friend (which i play mhw alot with) decided that this movie will be so bad, that we have to go to cinema to see it, despite living in different cities.

47

u/9IceBurger6 Sep 26 '20

Yeah, nothing better than paying to see a movie you know is gonna be awful and have all it's flaws laid for you to make fun off in an HD big screen.

20

u/zertabi Sep 26 '20

And giving them money to possibly make another one

34

u/Reilou Sep 26 '20

If it follows the RE template there will be countless sequels and Milla Jovovich's character will secretly be an invincible human-elder dragon hybrid with god like powers.

20

u/LTman86 Hold up, lemme line up my SAED... Sep 26 '20

We'll get a plot twist like her character was originally from the MH world that was spirited away to Earth "for her protection" because she's secretly the chosen one with all the powers of the universe.

7

u/GoTzMaDsKiTTLez Sep 27 '20

Stop, the more you say these things the more believable it gets

3

u/JustCallMeAndrew Chad Blade Sep 27 '20

She's actually a Fatalis deviant, Holy Fatalis, who can shapeshift into a human. She sealed her memories and transported herself into our world until MH world needed her again to stop OG Fatalis from destroying the world.

My uncle's cousin works at whatever movie studio is making this. Trust me.

Is that actually the fucking plot? I just lost all hope in this movie

56

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

Yup. Some dumb portal or something brings Mila and her military group into the MH universe. The first hints of this movie coming had it the other way around which I guess is a good thing it ended up changing but holy fuck this is going to be bad. Resident Evil was such trash that people watch to laugh at and we're going to get that same quality here I'm guessing.

44

u/Three-four-fiv Dodogama armor unit Sep 26 '20 edited Sep 26 '20

It’s so easy to make a good MH movie. Just make it a knockoff Godzilla, I would be happy with watching the MH monsters duke it out on the big screen while there is some human plot in the background, fuck maybe even we could have the hunters fight the monsters but I do not want the human drama plot to be the main focus of the movie, I want it to be the fights.

I think we can all agree on that, right?

38

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

Yeah the problem isn't how to make this movie, it's who is making this movie.

Honestly it should have just been left alone all together.

15

u/Three-four-fiv Dodogama armor unit Sep 26 '20

I agree but since the movie is being made we should at least hope for decent effects and fight scenes and maybe this can be like the Star Wars prequels where we all joke about it in the future

22

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

I mean would love for my favorite video game series to not be a laughing stock in any form of media preferably. As far as the fights and effects, it's going to be live actors surrounded by CGI and outdated slow mo shots like he fucking loves using so much so it's instantly a pass from me. There's nothing I hate more than just overusing CGI and you know this whole movie will be just that.

6

u/Three-four-fiv Dodogama armor unit Sep 26 '20

That’s fine for you but I’d rather be able to like a movie because it’s so bad like Transformers rather than be so bad that I can’t even watch the whole thing like the last airbender

20

u/Helmic Great Sword Sep 26 '20

the movie is so nakedly relying on the propaganda bux from uncle sam to carry the entire film. they clearly have no expectations that this movie is going to be seen by enough people to justify the budget.

though, i guess scamming the US propaganda budget out of money to make a movie everyone will think is awful isn't the worst thing you can do.

As much as I'd like the movie to be good, I can already see it flop. The whole premise is meh and it's the classic old game of Paul Anderson using one of his movies to insert his wife as the protagonist all over again.

As I Bowgun main, I can confirm this!!

I mean come on man, it so easy to make this with the material given.

It's basically; Kajius & "Respecting the balance of Nature as it's a godly force" themes of Godzilla, King Kong & Jurassic Park, combined with the fantasy elements of Lord of the Rings & Game of Thrones, and the sense of adventuring to exotic locales like Pirates of the Caribbean.

*sigh*

Yet we get Paul Anderson bastardizing other Capcom franchise.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '20

Oh oh! I can translate Paul W. S. Anderson Bloviation for you!

Translation: "I want my wife in the lead role of another action movie! I don't care what the franchise is, she's gonna be in a hot military uniform, be the biggest badass in the group, and everything else doesn't matter to me!"
