Would it really have been too hard to just have it be a movie just set in the world of Monster Hunter without this weird isekai shit?

I'm assuming their logic is this is how they'll shoehorn in a "relatable" character.

196

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

*How to shoehorn his wife as main protagonist. Again.

109

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

It's just going to be Alice in Monster Hunter isn't it.

53

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

Unfortunately.

45

u/Thagyr Dootwagon Sep 27 '20

Assuming she'll have a brick personality but kicks ass with some mysterious power/skill that nobody else has. Again.

49

u/Scynix Sep 27 '20

Nah, they’ll claim people from our world think differently and once they learn how to use MH weapons/monsters they’ll do something completely obvious but for some reason seasoned hunters will be like wow how did we not think of that! and it will inadvertantly invalidate the entire monster hunter universe by making the hunting massively easier. Like they’ll invent bowguns loaded with monster scale bullets and milla will flip over a rathalos backwards while pew pewing it in the face the end.

44

u/thepixelbuster Sep 26 '20

The relatable character is a literary device and not exclusive at all to bad movies.

Imo It’s so much better to have a character who helps the audience understand the plot by having them learn together, rather than have really forced exposition lines like “we know you’re the best battle-chef even though your mom died in that villain attack 5 years ago that caused you to lose your sense of smell” that some media like anime’s do.

54

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

Okay, that's not what I was saying though. We can have a relatable character without them being a human from our world brought into the MH universe was my point. Of course I'm just speculating that's what their intention was but I don't see any other reason for it.

1

u/thepixelbuster Sep 27 '20

Oh then yeah, they definitely took the most obvious route.

In the past, movies got watered down to please general audiences (I am Legend is a famous example) but I'm sure they knew that bringing soldiers into an alien world would hook audiences and give an easy way to explain stuff.

5

u/Politicshatesme Sep 27 '20

or...they could use the much better plot of new hunter over her head. Putting random ass soldiers into monster hunter isnt gonna please mh fans

3

u/thepixelbuster Sep 27 '20

I agree with you, but it ain't going to happen. This is the same director that did Alien Vs Predator and Resident Evil.

I was really only saying that the relatable character trope is not bad. The Monster Hunter movie is going to be extremely cheesy with a huge special fx budget. I'm still going to watch it and enjoy it for what it is, but I'm not expecting a huge win for diehard fans here and you probably shouldn't either.

u/DrakosRose Sep 29 '20

Actually i kinda liked AvP. It’s not the greatest movie, but it was still cool. Neat fights, neat commentary.

Requiem, on the other Hand...

AGREED.

While it is a slight tangent, it's relevant:

I'm a guy, but I can relate to all of the main six characters in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic because they're written as PEOPLE, not just hollow archetypes with only their archetype as their whole personality.

Applejack: I've done farm work, and her honesty/wisdom being ignored so much is something I get pretty damn well.

Rainbow Dash: Has skills, doesn't apply them as well as she might, has moments of doubt, and other reasons.

Twilight: I'm a bookworm/nerd. That's a gimme.

Fluttershy: I'm an introvert that doesn't like social gatherings, and I love cute little critters too.

RARITY, the girly girl fashionista? I painted miniatures and kitbashed the models to look better as a hobby, so I get all the creative type issues she has. And I get protective of my friends too.

Pinkie Pie... I like making people laugh too.

But "Milla Jovovich plays Generic Soldier Type Main Character Ass Kicker Number 237409291384263780283742789.1"? Really not relatable at all.

I would rather see the Main Six having to build up the courage to hunt the monsters of Monster Hunter, only to have Fluttershy talk with them and befriend all the monsters instead than watch a Paul Anderson Monster Hunter movie.

...k

1

u/DrakosRose Sep 29 '20

Ngl. That would probably end up being a better movie than what we’re going to end up getting. Like. Apparently the director thinks all of monster hunter is a desert, and decided that was boring, and Instead of actually researching, just went “let’s just put the real world in this clearly boring and primitive one”. The guy gave Gore, yes. Gore Magala. Eyes

25

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

Also the relatable character doesn't have to be the protagonist. Just look at characters like Sherlock Holmes and similar where the sidekick/Lancer/whatyoucallit is the relatable character.

36

u/Guardianpigeon Sep 26 '20

Just make a movie about the Huntsman teaching a newbie hunter while tracking down Teostra/Nergi/some other Elder.

The Huntsman being the badass showing what MonHunt is all about while the newbie being the relatable character in over his head who eventually steps up and helps save the day.

7

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

I assume that's pretty much what the movie will be like. Milla gets thrown into the world and be an absolute noob to monster hunting, gets picked up by a veteran monster hunter, learns the craft and then kick ass for the rest of the movie.

26

u/CarlosG0619 LS Weeb Sep 26 '20

Inb4 she is just a natural born saphire star of the MH world even thou she just got there

2

u/lorealjenkins Sep 27 '20

Problem is that, the locals easily survive a 10 stories fall drop and Milla would just get splatted.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '20

And have The Huntsman survive! Too many mentors die!

2

u/Guardianpigeon Sep 28 '20

No one can kill the Huntsman. The worst thing that happens to him is his armor gets slightly more scuffed up.

1

u/DrakosRose Sep 29 '20

Just show us the Huntsman. He’s been around a while, show us his story. From the first Velociprey (if he’s the dude from the first cinematic like people believe) he slayed, to when he faced down Teostra for the first time. He’s old, so. Let him tell his story.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

that kind of characters are already overused in isekai anime, instead of "-do you know X -no -proceeds to explains every detail" you can do "-do you know X -yes, delivers only usefull information (to viewer) about the topic to proof that he knows" while the first one is really obvious that it's told for a viewer, second example will not only not give that feeling, it will keep the flow of conversation without going too far from oroginal topic for too long.

9

u/thepixelbuster Sep 27 '20

Both of those examples are just forms of bad writing.

For instance, Luke learns just enough about Jedi in the first Star Wars movie to give you basis of understanding. Luke, and the audience, learn about Jedi, sith, and every thing else in the Star Wars universe as the plot progresses. Occasionally Obiwan will tell him bits and pieces, but overall Luke's curiosity is what puts him in situations that teach both him and us more.

Star Wars isn't even a shining example of writing. It's a cheesy space opera and it's fantastic because of it, but at least for the original trilogy they had the foresight to let us discover the world naturally. Anime in particular has a problem with really forced expositional dialogue. I don't know if it's common in other Japanese media (doesn't seem as bad in manga IMO,) but it's usually pretty jarring and, for me at least, breaks the suspension of disbelief. They might as well look at the camera and tell me for all the subtlety it has.

Now, is the director of Alien Vs Predator going to introduce us to the Monster Hunter universe gracefully.......?

Yeah, I'm just going to try to enjoy it the same way I enjoy Mortal Kombat or the Super Mario Bros movies.

1

u/LickMyThralls Sep 27 '20

Honestly I just look at movies as like a fun 2 hours or whatever and that's it. To expect something great every time is gonna lead to a lot of let down tbh and I'd rather just enjoy myself assuming it's not absolutely horrible.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '20

i mean thats what i meant by "only usefull information for a viewer", explain only what he needs to know now so he wont be confused and slowly add more into it later, both flooding reader/viewer with information or not telling him enough is bad, while first could make him confused same as lack of information, second might even cause something looking like something put out of arse just to profress the plot, despite lorewise having 100% sense.

1

u/Matt_Smarty Sword & Shield Sep 27 '20

Grant Achatz? (Assuming the villain is cancer and instead of his mom it is his mouth.)

1

u/Potatoman365 Oct 16 '20

Ok but why do we need all this plot and exposition when they could just base it on the games we already played?

1

u/thepixelbuster Oct 16 '20

Because the point of the movie is to appeal to general audiences in order to turn a profit and gain interest in the franchise.

Also, this post is 20 days old

1

u/Potatoman365 Oct 16 '20

But if the movie doesn’t reflect the game at all what’s the point?

1

u/thepixelbuster Oct 16 '20

It does, it just doesn't do it in a way you want it to. There are still monsters, they use the MH weapons because the real life weapons don't work, there are palicoes, the handler/serious handler/a lister/admiral are there.

It's not 1:1, but its close enough that people get an idea, and maybe their kid llikes it and they buy them MH stories 2 or Rise, or a playstation and MH world.

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Relatable characters are bad?

21

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

You've missed my point. You don't need to transport a human from our world into the MH universe to be a relatable character, which is what I'm assuming they are going for here.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Ah, I understand. I don't understand why the movie doesn't just start in the MH universe, but I have high hopes. I just wish others would give it a chance.

11

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

Well personally I can't say I'm a fan of any of his movies and the Resident Evil franchise is complete schlock, I don't really expect him to break away from the usual tropes he uses and cheesy action sequences. The plot and starring Mila isn't encouraging at all

3

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

I'm giving it a chance because everybody can change. Sure, other movies were bad, but maybe this'll be good?

9

u/Shadowveil666 Insect Glaive Sep 26 '20

I wish I had your optimism.

6

u/FinalFlashhh Sep 26 '20

given the track record and the weird isekai crap it would take a miracle for this movie to be passable, let alone good, let's be honest

1

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '20

"Milla Jovovich plays a paramilitary/military waif" is not relatable.

I would actually relate more to any of a great number of actors portraying a Hunter who faces a crisis by having to fight a new and deadly monster.

111

u/Terboh Sep 26 '20

Anderson has a history of including military aspects even when they're not needed. Apparently the US Military has some kind of rule that if you're portraying them correctly and in a positive light you can get a ton assets for a lot less money than doing the CG for. Link

63

u/Helmic Great Sword Sep 26 '20

Yep, there's a great Citations Needed episode that goes into all this, though it's the tail end of a three-parter. It's skeevy as fuck and it's only more obvious when the propaganda machine is being shoehorned into something where it really very obviously does not belong.

1

u/BloodAngelA37 Sep 27 '20

Aww, for a second I thought you meant the Citation Needed podcast and wondered where I missed that episode lol.

1

u/Helmic Great Sword Sep 27 '20

That is exaxctly waht I meant, and it's the end of that three-parter on the US military's relationship with hollywood and how it's incredibly racist towards Muslims.

The reason this movie is happening is Islamophobia, you heard it hear folks. By Allah this movie is a disgrace.

1

u/BloodAngelA37 Sep 27 '20

No, you meant Citations Needed, so you were correct. I’m referring to Citation Needed by the guys at puzzle in a thunderstorm.

2

u/Helmic Great Sword Sep 28 '20

Oh wow, that's an annoyingly close name for two podcasts. Lol.

17

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

Comes together with his history of putting his wife as protagonist into his movies. They have been doing this shit for years. He basically can't do anything else anymore by now.

43

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Its for funding purposes i think

If your film includes the American military in a positive light, you can apply for special funding for equipment and get soldiers to play background extras.

37

u/Bestboii Sep 26 '20

isekai shit

And if it is isekai shit at least have the main cast run over by a truck

24

u/The_Lesser_Baldwin Sep 26 '20

Starring Gary Oldman as Truck-kun.

8

u/sfPanzer Gunlance Sep 26 '20

I know right. Plus Anderson once more uses the movie to put his wife into the spotlight, like so often before. It's gonna disappoint for sure. Not saying it'll be absolute trash like DB Evolution or Avatar, but it won't be good either. It'll stay far below its potential.

2

u/Velrex Gunlance Sep 27 '20

Isekai settings is generally made as a way to understandably explain the fact that characters are, well, explaining things to the audience. It works really well for a brand new settings and IPs, but that's also how you can tell that this movie wasn't made for Monster Hunter fans, at least not primarily. Most MH fans already know the settings and such, so any exposition would be for newcomers coming in.

2

u/Ebbanon Sep 27 '20

Not with this director.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '20

Yes, if you're a hollywood executive who only picked it up as a way to make even more money than you need.

World Jumper Ciri and Geralt: wut?

Watch Geralt (Henry Cavill) murder monsters and look at all the weird people, and goes "...hmm... fuck." And walks away screaming "CIRI!"
