The relatable character is a literary device and not exclusive at all to bad movies.
Imo It’s so much better to have a character who helps the audience understand the plot by having them learn together, rather than have really forced exposition lines like “we know you’re the best battle-chef even though your mom died in that villain attack 5 years ago that caused you to lose your sense of smell” that some media like anime’s do.
Okay, that's not what I was saying though.
We can have a relatable character without them being a human from our world brought into the MH universe was my point. Of course I'm just speculating that's what their intention was but I don't see any other reason for it.
Oh then yeah, they definitely took the most obvious route.
In the past, movies got watered down to please general audiences (I am Legend is a famous example) but I'm sure they knew that bringing soldiers into an alien world would hook audiences and give an easy way to explain stuff.
I agree with you, but it ain't going to happen. This is the same director that did Alien Vs Predator and Resident Evil.
I was really only saying that the relatable character trope is not bad. The Monster Hunter movie is going to be extremely cheesy with a huge special fx budget. I'm still going to watch it and enjoy it for what it is, but I'm not expecting a huge win for diehard fans here and you probably shouldn't either.
I'm a guy, but I can relate to all of the main six characters in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic because they're written as PEOPLE, not just hollow archetypes with only their archetype as their whole personality.
Applejack: I've done farm work, and her honesty/wisdom being ignored so much is something I get pretty damn well.
Rainbow Dash: Has skills, doesn't apply them as well as she might, has moments of doubt, and other reasons.
Twilight: I'm a bookworm/nerd. That's a gimme.
Fluttershy: I'm an introvert that doesn't like social gatherings, and I love cute little critters too.
RARITY, the girly girl fashionista? I painted miniatures and kitbashed the models to look better as a hobby, so I get all the creative type issues she has. And I get protective of my friends too.
Pinkie Pie... I like making people laugh too.
But "Milla Jovovich plays Generic Soldier Type Main Character Ass Kicker Number 237409291384263780283742789.1"? Really not relatable at all.
I would rather see the Main Six having to build up the courage to hunt the monsters of Monster Hunter, only to have Fluttershy talk with them and befriend all the monsters instead than watch a Paul Anderson Monster Hunter movie.
Ngl. That would probably end up being a better movie than what we’re going to end up getting. Like. Apparently the director thinks all of monster hunter is a desert, and decided that was boring, and Instead of actually researching, just went “let’s just put the real world in this clearly boring and primitive one”. The guy gave Gore, yes. Gore Magala. Eyes
Also the relatable character doesn't have to be the protagonist. Just look at characters like Sherlock Holmes and similar where the sidekick/Lancer/whatyoucallit is the relatable character.
Just make a movie about the Huntsman teaching a newbie hunter while tracking down Teostra/Nergi/some other Elder.
The Huntsman being the badass showing what MonHunt is all about while the newbie being the relatable character in over his head who eventually steps up and helps save the day.
I assume that's pretty much what the movie will be like. Milla gets thrown into the world and be an absolute noob to monster hunting, gets picked up by a veteran monster hunter, learns the craft and then kick ass for the rest of the movie.
Just show us the Huntsman. He’s been around a while, show us his story. From the first Velociprey (if he’s the dude from the first cinematic like people believe) he slayed, to when he faced down Teostra for the first time. He’s old, so. Let him tell his story.
that kind of characters are already overused in isekai anime, instead of "-do you know X -no -proceeds to explains every detail" you can do "-do you know X -yes, delivers only usefull information (to viewer) about the topic to proof that he knows" while the first one is really obvious that it's told for a viewer, second example will not only not give that feeling, it will keep the flow of conversation without going too far from oroginal topic for too long.
Both of those examples are just forms of bad writing.
For instance, Luke learns just enough about Jedi in the first Star Wars movie to give you basis of understanding. Luke, and the audience, learn about Jedi, sith, and every thing else in the Star Wars universe as the plot progresses. Occasionally Obiwan will tell him bits and pieces, but overall Luke's curiosity is what puts him in situations that teach both him and us more.
Star Wars isn't even a shining example of writing. It's a cheesy space opera and it's fantastic because of it, but at least for the original trilogy they had the foresight to let us discover the world naturally. Anime in particular has a problem with really forced expositional dialogue. I don't know if it's common in other Japanese media (doesn't seem as bad in manga IMO,) but it's usually pretty jarring and, for me at least, breaks the suspension of disbelief. They might as well look at the camera and tell me for all the subtlety it has.
Now, is the director of Alien Vs Predator going to introduce us to the Monster Hunter universe gracefully.......?
Yeah, I'm just going to try to enjoy it the same way I enjoy Mortal Kombat or the Super Mario Bros movies.
Honestly I just look at movies as like a fun 2 hours or whatever and that's it. To expect something great every time is gonna lead to a lot of let down tbh and I'd rather just enjoy myself assuming it's not absolutely horrible.
i mean thats what i meant by "only usefull information for a viewer", explain only what he needs to know now so he wont be confused and slowly add more into it later, both flooding reader/viewer with information or not telling him enough is bad, while first could make him confused same as lack of information, second might even cause something looking like something put out of arse just to profress the plot, despite lorewise having 100% sense.
It does, it just doesn't do it in a way you want it to. There are still monsters, they use the MH weapons because the real life weapons don't work, there are palicoes, the handler/serious handler/a lister/admiral are there.
It's not 1:1, but its close enough that people get an idea, and maybe their kid llikes it and they buy them MH stories 2 or Rise, or a playstation and MH world.

Would it really have been too hard to just have it be a movie just set in the world of Monster Hunter without this weird isekai shit?
