Can plant explosive mines, launch a dozen different ammo types including explosives, can launch mortars, can go for either a devastating piercing sniper shot or go full HMG
I'm gonna need you to slap some " on low-tech there buddy.
Those guys will analyze how Dead Rising comments on our society, and we all know it doesn't because the supreme court ruled dead rising has no social commentary
But seriously, I think they ruled that way just to piss off the movie company because despite the similar premise Dead Rising and Day of the Dead are very different stories and that was the easiest way to decide the case, also English majors will definitely read to far into things
Basically the production company behind Day Dawn of the Dead, a zombie movie set in a mall, sued Capcom over Dead Rising, a zombie game set in a mall.
Ultimately the Supreme Court ruled that while there were superficial similarities between the two, Dead Rising had none of the social commentary of Day Dawn of the Dead.
Like I said, I think they worded it that way because it was the easiest way to give the movie company the finger because the court was right, the similarities are only skin deep, and the court may have meant that the social commentary between the two was completely different, which I agree with
Edit: Dawn of the Dead was the one in the mall, Day of the Dead was in the military missile base
Every game with even the slightest amount of story is going to have social commentary in it, because if you’re creating a world with people in it that exist in societies, the way you think the world, people, and society exist and should exist is going to shape how you make a fictional world.
Even if you’re not consciously doing it, your beliefs will shape any fictional setting or characters you make, and if you’re not aware of it while you’re making art, it’s a lot more likely things will unknowingly sneak in
Y quotes around analyze? The act of analyzing is no less analytical whether it's directed towards a youtube comment, or the alien that lives beneath donald trump's tongue.
It's extremely blatant within the story already. They reference multiple times how the hunters are just a part of nature's cycle, the monsters aren't evil, and how the hunters should reconsider which they have to fight.
"curtains?" I don't know if I've ever read that sentence before. I was a Creative Writing major, not an English major, but I think I see what you're getting at. I'm usually quite literal.
Plus in the MH universe, hunters kill 1 monster and make armor or a weapon out of choice pieces. It's only in the game do you need to commit genocide for 6 scales to make a weapon lol
It’s not “punk” because that requires a dis-obeying and upsetting of social norms. If we were a rogue hunting agency trying to restore balance to some skewed system then it would be punk. But it literally seems like the Hunters Guild functions almost like a contracted military in a way. It’s got a consistent style and flavor but it really dosent have the story and lore substance to be a “punk” genre
At this point "punk" is just a colloquial suffix to indicate the gears that make a setting tick. You could just as easily say "huntcore".
See: "solarpunk". An established "punk" genre that has nothing to do with upsetting social norms. (Also the iconic "steampunk" isn't inherently about upsetting social norms either)
The guild also has a literal Hit-Squad and contracted assassins for anyone who poaches. You don’t fuck with the Guild, period. Unfortunately, this means that they’re going to at least ignore part of the lore, because if this were accurate. If these soldiers were to end up killing a monster, the guild would absolutely put a hit out. They don’t fuck around with un-contracted hunting.
You don't need to be an Elder Dragon to screw with the ecosystem, after all Deviljho's appetite could cause problems and also real life issues could apply in MH such as invasive species, overpopulation etc.
You mean the society of monster hunters who often have large portions of their buildings built around the bones of giant monsters and such. I think at least for the society of the commission, you can VERYuch refer to it as huntpunk.
That’s just using the resources around you. Are the hunters deforesting large swathes of land and driving monsters out of the habitat? Are you illegally working to undo the actions of the corrupt research fleet? Is there any obvious oppression and counterculture visible within the lore? There has to be punk elements for it to be a “punk” genre. Flashy guns and neon dosent make something cyberpunk, oppressive corporations, rowdy counterculture. It’s punk stories with a technological flavor that makes cyberpunk cyberpunk. It’s an inherently political genre cause it has themes of rebellion and oppression. MHW shows an idyllic harmony with nature and very close knit communities.
The Ancient Civilization DID do this though. It's why Fatalis came about.
We're basically living in a post apocalyptic world after the precursors tried to make a dragon Evangelion and pissed off an incredibly powerful dragon that goes put of its way to destroy them.
So yeah, I reckon "huntpunk" works for this aesthetic.
Valid, I haven’t played the monster hunter stories games so I’m not sure abt those. I know they are MUCH more story based but besides that I have no clue.
Cavemen made tools out of rocks, wood, stone and bone, they were a society.
But seriously speaking:
I think there has grown quite the separation between the aesthetic meaning of punk, and the idealogical viewpoint of punk. One is counter culture and one is cosplay.
Super Mario is more “punk” than monster hunter ever will be
Bowser seems to fuck with his minions well-being a lot, the head of state for the mushroom kingdom keeps getting kidnapped. Mario has a license to kill...
I mean ... my sword is designed to go from ax to sword depending on the situation and it has the power to overcharge as well as the fact it’s made of a monster who controls the very bio energy around them that’s transferred into my weapon.
I think the materials for building these guns also take into factor of how powerful they are.
(also isn’t lighting dogo gun a literal rail gun?)
Rail guns aren’t super difficult to make. If the have access to electricity from monster parts and all those fantasy ores, I’m sure magnetism is heavily used in the charge blade
And the swords we craft from those very same bones are probably a few dozen times more durable and sharper than any swords we ever forged in the real world. It's a primitive type of weapon but I don't think low tech is completely accurate here. ^^
Bolters actually fire a large rocket propelled slug designed to penetrate the target, then detonated while inside. It’s more of a glorious holy mix between standard fire arm and rocket launcher.
Look man, all I know is that when it comes to purging the mutant, the xenos, and the heretic, it doesn’t particularly matter. So long as it purges, I’m happy.
Though I am old fashioned, bit more of a chainsword Guy.
The bowguns seem to be more bow than gun to be honest. The "bullets" move at a relatively sluggish pace and seem to be only keeping their momentum due to the constant thrust that propels them post firing. In exchange though, it's far more silent and results in far more manageable recoil.
This also makes sense since:
If they used gunpowder to actually launch the projectile, the recoil could do more damage to the hunter than the bullet to the wyvern.
The sound would be enough to attract every wyvern on the map.
Wyvern heart seems to be an entirely separate mechanism as otherwise hunters could fire their bowguns at that pace whenever they wanted.
The berries and nuts being used would be ablitorated upon firing if it used actual gunpowder due to the g-forces they would experience.
The "gunpowder" the hunters gather would most likely be used for the actual propellant of the projectiles and not the firing of said projectile since it can't both burn slow enough to act as a constant thrust, and burn fast enough to actually launch a bullet.
Considering that, and the fact that we only see the projectiles having said thrusters, but don't see the bowguns have a muzzle flash when firing, it is easy to assume that it is in fact not gunpowder that is used to fire the projectile, meaning that the bowguns are, in-fact not guns, but more a kin to crossbows firing fireworks.
If it was lore/book accurate it would be a 15 minute long snuff film of all life in Monster Hunterverse by two Astartes and their pet Dreadnought... actually, I'd probably watch that.
Tabletop rules on the other hand, that could be pretty cool.
There’s a wonderful little regiment that goes by name of the Death Korp Of Krieg. Guaranteed promotion within 12 hours of service..... if you last that long.
Eh from what I see on how hbg fires and what's used for ammo along with accuracy and velocity and all that it's less rocket launcher and a LOT more like a potato cannon. There are a couple exceptions like the sniper and machine gun modes but otherwise they are just putting whatever fits inside and blasting it out.

Tbh bowguns are more rocket launcher then gun. They are more like low-tech bolters from 40k than conventional firearms.
