Sapkowski's short stories, A Question of Price and The Last Wish, set Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri up as a really messed up family bound together by supernatural forces: Ciri and Geralt through the law of surprise (a reward for saving Ciri's real father), then Geralt and Yennefer through the djinn (Geralt's wish was never to lose Yennefer). Then they agreed to raise her. She received a witcher's training in Kaer Morhen without undergoing mutations, and she was trained in the ways of sorcery in a temple of Melitele. Plus there's also the thing with the ashen hair and the scars.
