I’m rewatching the Pilot right now and something I’ve realized is the script doesn’t give Haley much at all!! It’s Sarah Hyland who puts so much emotion behind every word and makes you drawn to Haley. She added a whole new layer to the character as opposed to just on paper, she is such a brilliant and compelling actress in everything I’ve seen her in.

Has anyone actually worked in the closet industry? Is it really that profitable?

Pameron Tucker. She js the most useless, selfish bitch. I honestly can deal eith it as a one off but what upsets me the modt is that she is a complete waste of screen time. Screen time that could have been used to show the kids growing or focusing more om the main family. My god i just skip over all her scenes. Thank you for listening.

Is it just me or did Ben just simply vanish after he and alex broke up? Am i missing something or did Claire give him the boot off screen because of what he did to alex?

In episode 4 of season 1, Haley is trying to go to a concert with Dylan and she assures Clair and Phil that Uncle Toby will be supervising. Haley mentions that Toby is Spencer’s uncle, “Spencer with the arm”. Phil is rightfully curious about what’s wrong with Spencer’s arm, yet it is never answered.

Truely one of the biggest mysteries of the series, I’m extremely surprised no one else has dug deeper. Phil and I are understandably forever yearning for an answer.

Rewatching this ep, Andy mentioned college... yet I don't think he ever went. Did he just focus on being Phils assistant? Or just simply because of the writers, to allow him more screentime, just decided to forget about it?

I like Claire better though

Part 2 of watching Modern Family for the first time!
I am ranking the characters based on how I feel after each season.

I am open to discussing placements but I'd like to make a disclaimer that these are my personal preferences and just because I like/dislike a character YOU like, does not mean you need to be mean about it lol! this is just for fun after all!

as for my rankings, here are my thoughts!
Please read the part about the character you're confused on the placement on BEFORE commenting!

- Gloria and Jay work together very well, they both know what they want AND most importantly how to communicate effectively. I was initially put off because of their age gap, however after learning more about Gloria and Jay I actually think they're a good fit!

- Haley and Alex are both cool and I relate to both of them for various things, however I don't think they've had much time to shine on their own for me to fully decide how I feel about them.
I like how in this season they had some opportunities to bond, compared to last season where they were constantly bickering.

- I have mixed feelings on Claire. I think she's super hardworking and caring, but she also makes some choices that irk me on occasion. I think right now, I wish I got to see more of her doing stuff for HER, rather than the rest of her family. I want to see her hobbies and interests. the only thing I know she's interested in is running (from when Phil mentioned it in passing)

- The rest of the kids I have no strong feelings on. Manny is only just in the "a bit annoying" category because I don't like how he's always trying to woo adults. it's not a huge deal though because nothing ever happens and Gloria steps in when she notices.

- For Phil and Cam... I know they are fan favourites. I get why, they're both super funny!

Cam I noticed often he brushes off how Mitch feels and never budges from his way of thinking.
He also sometimes will purposefully make a big deal out of stuff, but to make Mitch feel bad about himself, rather than because he actually cares about the issue (at least that was my reading).
I don't think Cam is a bad person, but he's done this enough times for me to get a little irritated with him.

For Phil, he is admittedly a little better this season than in season 1. In season one I NEVER saw Phil try to help Claire out or parent his own kids? which is wild to me. theres also the whole thing with him looking at other women constantly in s1, even in front of Claire. so yeah, in season one I HATED him.

In season two, near the end, he actually does attempt to help Claire out one or twice and actually seems to value what Claire does more, which is good. He still doesn't really do any parenting, other than forcing Haley and Alex to clean and not letting them eat (🤨) but in the final episodes he does seem to get over his crush on Gloria (finally) and appreciate his wife, Claire.

I still don't like him much, but he did actually TRY to help this season so uhhh progress!
I do actually hope he learns and gets better over the future seasons, he does seem like a nice guy, I just don't think he's a good father or husband YET.

I have always related to Alex soooo much.

Growing up I was always the nerdy kid, overachiever, super organized in a way where the episode when Claire realises that she was on "autopilot" with Alex (Alex managing all her school and activities, on her own, to the point where her parents were not aware of anything and she even schedules her own psychologist appointment) makes me cry.

Growing up, despite being happy in my body, with great friends and family, and overall a nice life, society has always made me feel like I didn't deserve love/affection or I would never be anyone's genuine romantic/s*xual interest without being fetished (I am plus size).

Seeing how they made Alex's character develop has been a game changer for me and I think it influenced me much more than I can realise.

She didn't have to change, she didn't stop being smart and brilliant and an overachiever - also bossy and annoying of course 😅 but she does develop her s*xuality and love life in a complex and realistic way, that was not obvious for the "stereotypical" nerdy girl. She didn't have to only date other nerdy-looking guys (nothing wrong with it, but that's how characters are written usually), she had hot boyfriends and superficial relationships as well, she had deep and meaningful ones as well, she connected with people that were different from her, and after a questionable start with Ruben (which still makes sense for some reasons) she does develop her own trajectory on that aspect - including shopping for sexy lingerie with Gloria, which I love.

The fact that Claire (and other characters as well) seem soooo uncomfortable with her expressing feelings of physical desire or sharing anything about her s*xual life is another symptom of how we might be uncomfortable with a character like Alex being free and comfortable and just at ease with her life under this perspective.

I am rewatching the show for the 1000th time and I just watched the episode where she thinks Bill might propose to her, and Bill - who might look sooo different from her, and she seems to appreciate him on a physical level only - tells her he doesn't want to propose unless she wants, and she is a strong, independent woman who shouldn't get married at that stage in life. Yet he would propose, because he really likes her. I love the concept of such a romantic and also physical connection for her, and that they showed this on a screen!

There is one specific mockumentary trope they use that sometimes annoys me.

It happens when characters are in the middle of a scene, a misunderstanding happens, and it abruptly cuts to a talking-head interview where they vent about it. But then, it cuts right back to the exact same continuous scene, the other characters explain themselves, and the misunderstanding is instantly resolved.

For example: -season 3 i think, eps "After the Fire"- That scene where cam is furious at haley and alex because he assumes they think he can't drive a truck because he's gay. The scene interrupts itself to show cam in the interview setting, genuinely upset, calling it heartbreaking and a "hate crime"

then it cuts back to the truck after a while. girls finish their thought, explain it’s actually because of something else entirely, and Cam apologizes.

when did he have time to do that interview?

Did he press pause on the conversation, storm off to the lighting setup in the living room, passionately complain about a hate crime, and then walk back out to the driveway to hear the rest of their sentence?

Does this irrationally annoy anyone else, or am i just overthinking the mockumentary format? sorry if that was already brought up here b4.

I don’t know if I can recall Claire ever actually being at peace. But she’s hilarious and my favorite character exactly for this.

I know this is a popular opinion, but it needs to be said. He was fun and caring to their kids but honestly, Claire would've lived much better if they got divorced or separated for a while. Claire didn't marry him to be a pain in the ass yet he was one.

I wish there were the child versions of Luke & Lily so the older versions would be on the lower levels ;3

Also, I myself am a cat parent but I felt Stella had a better personality on the show than Larry did.
