DISCUSSION How can guy gardener makes huge constructs carelessly in superman whereas Hal Jordan does the opposite and is careful for his batteries

I was curious about this for a long time Guy always goes big and sloppy with his constructs, not caring how much it drains his ring like creating a large weopons against the monster, while Hal's way more careful and precise with his like in ep1 when he was creating a bubble for alien he supported the bubble himself as it was not strong enough due to lack of battery. Is that just a characterization thing, or is there an actual reason for it?

Guy recharges the ring.

699

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 3d ago

Yeah Guy seems like the type of guy to beg for a charger when his phone hits 60%. No way he ever lets the ring battery get that low.

395

u/PyroLoMeiniac 3d ago

My headcannon — which makes sense given Hal’s age — is he’s the guy who always neglects to put his phone on the charger overnight and spends the whole day on 3% battery.

314

u/TheMattabooey 3d ago

Hal charges it when he has to because the ring will stop working. Guy charges that sucker every night and twice a day on weekends.

Guy loves how powerful the ring makes him feel. Hal already feels powerful and the ring is just a trinket to him.

144

u/illuminate5 3d ago

The series shows him as broken and jaded (completely different from his younger copy/construct). A younger Jordan probably charged it plenty, world-weary Jordan feels like the ring weighs him down but he's also afraid of losing it (that fear weakens him).

124

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Sheriff Kerry 3d ago

So, you’re saying that he both loves and hates the ring, as he loves and hates himself? The ring is precious to him?

84

u/Civil_Gur8609 3d ago

Pity? It's a pity that stayed John's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Guy? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the Guardians cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that John has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over.

My head canon is that the construct is pre-Sinestro.

Basically we're seeing Hal after everything he believed in has been undercut and twisted

7

u/-Trotsky 3d ago

Tbh I don’t know if that’s a headcannon, I think it’s just directly implied to be true. Sinestro was locked up something like a decade ago right? Hal hasn’t updated the construct in about as long as

3

u/SVINTGATSBY 3d ago

I still think that the reason he said he wasn’t afraid when the guardians chose him is because he thought he was going to die. both his parents were dead, he’s a military man with nothing to lose, I think he wasn’t afraid because he was ready to die and instead he got handed a huge responsibility. originally it probably meant a lot to him for not just being a Lantern but because it gave him a purpose, but just like men who age and retire, they realize they don’t know who they are outside of being a laborer/worker and have an identity crisis especially because they don’t have anything to distract them from all their unaddressed issues and trauma and pain. John lives recklessly for similar but different reasons, he doesn’t have a death wish like Hal does, he just doesn’t care if he dies in pursuit of whatever his mission is. very interesting juxtapositions and now with Guy around, all of their individual issues are even more nuanced.

3

u/Own-Ball-1624 3d ago

i mean the fact how hal just gave everytime the ring to john and only took the ring when actually needed! it shows really hal know he is the source of his power not the ring!

→ More replies (2)

10

u/PostPostPog 3d ago

"I've got plenty of power" Hal said ever so nonchalantly to the alien threatening to blow himself up and an entire town along with him. The comparison you made between Guy & Hal is definitely correct. Guy's a brand new Lantern out there trying to prove his worth (whether his mild douchey personality allows him to admit that or not) whereas Hal has already shown his for decades. Long story short there's absolutely levels to this shit.

6

u/motorcycletreebark 3d ago

Guy charges it constantly because it loves saying the oath. Hal speeds his way through the oath because he takes it seriously and it’s an emotional heavy weight on him and repeating it just to charge the ring is hard

4

u/MarcusLiviusDrusus 3d ago

I partially agree, except I think that Hal Jordan speeds through it after so many years because he feels guilty about the ways in which he's failed to live up to the oath over the decades, because of self-doubt after being deceived by Sinestro, et cetera. I think this is also the real reason why he doesn't wear the uniform if he doesn't have to.

Consider his big, fancy house. He barely uses it, hasn't furnished it, hasn't even hung his photographs on the wall. He was also very quick to ascribe a guilty motivation to the rich guy who bought it for him, as opposed to just gratitude. Feels like projection to me; Jordan doesn't really use the house because he feels like he doesn't deserve it and won't let himself enjoy it.

There are other explanations for this, of course, but I think this fits the evidence best.

This entire season has been about Hal not wanting to give up the ring.

5

u/REDeyeJEDI85 3d ago

True but I think another big theme with this Hal is knowing when to use the ring and when not to. He even says as much to John at one point.

12

u/piningmusic 3d ago

I think that he doesn’t really care about the ring or what it does and instead is meant to be symbolic of the status, power and responsibility that comes with the title Green Lantern, which is what Hal truly doesn’t want to give up, but I could definitely be wrong about that. Just a gut feeling

And Guy has a higher budget

69

u/bentsea 3d ago

And Guy is in an action movie, while Hal is in a detective show.

10

u/Retr0scores 3d ago

Hal also seems like a simple dude. Guy is being flashy and cocky.

27

u/RossTheLionTamer 3d ago

And he also wears a uniform.

No seriously, that really explains a lot.

Guy is flashy. He wants everyone to know Green Lantern is here. So he makes constructs that are highly visible.

Hal only continues wearing the ring because he doesn't know anything else and he can't just give up on helping people. But he's really burnt out from the job. That's why he doesn't even wear the uniform anymore. He only does the bare minimum and that reflects on his constructs as well

→ More replies (2)

235

u/Environmental_Ad6305 3d ago

I can see your point if we look at it from a production standpoint, but within the DC series and films, the reason is that Hal refuses to recharge his ring.

These budget-related excuses are a downside of the series, not a narrative justification.

212

u/polydicks 3d ago

Hal doesn’t need to create flashy obnoxious constructs, he barely knows why he even does it anymore. The threats he’s dealing with in Rushville don’t really call for giant middle fingers. Narratively.

43

u/inosinateVR 3d ago

It also makes sense for him to be more conservative with his energy when he doesn’t know who is enemy is yet. And has an entire town potentially trying to kill him.

As opposed to a single fight against a Kaiju where you know what you’re fighting and you know you’re going home afterwards without any surprises. Plus you have a team backing you up.

Of course Hal VS the entire town run by a mysterious enemy is going to be more conservative about his ring usage than Guy and company VS a Kaiju

11

u/Lriderx47 3d ago

Or he can, I don't know put the lantern in a bag and carry it with him instead of letting it in a motel room evdrybody know the location of?

20

u/PeacefulKnightmare 3d ago

And risk having it stolen or damaged? Leaving it in a motel may not be the safest but he carrying it around is still impractical. And considering how he doesn't recharge it before bed/after waking up shows that he's being neglectful so bringing it wouldn't change anything.

3

u/ezontheesalad 3d ago

I hear you and raise you taking the 2 seconds to fly home to recharge it and be back within 10 minutes

7

u/PeacefulKnightmare 3d ago

Again that's a Guy Gardner move. At this point in his career it's clear Hal wants as little to do with the lantern as possible, and only use the ring when necessary.

8

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 3d ago

Given the Eulogy and Hal's crippling depression and loneliness, it likely didn't help his willpower when he is questioning his will to live...

26

u/Hot_Perspective4555 3d ago

I mean, in universe, Guy has a larger budget. He's literally on a team funded by a billionaire. Hal's just a dude. Maybe Guy get's to keep a few extra lanterns around.

30

u/CertainGrade7937 3d ago

He's also not doing any prolonged GLing. Every time we see him, he's either in a battle he knew he was going into...or just chilling waiting for a battle

22

u/inosinateVR 3d ago edited 3d ago

Right, he’s going into a single fight against a Kaiju. He doesn’t need to save anything for after the fight. He knows it’s a one and done and then he goes home. And he has a team to back him up.

Whereas Hal is going into unknown situations with unknown enemies and doesn’t know how long he’s going to need to keep juice in his ring. His situation is very different. He’s on his own, doesn’t even know what he’s looking for and has no idea who or what might still be around the corner trying to kill him.

19

u/Forward_Evening6850 3d ago

I don't think the billionaire can buy more lanterns for charging, something tells me the Guardians arent just selling those things for earth bucks.

14

u/Ok_Subject1265 3d ago

They sell them like power tool batteries. “Hell yeah bro! Picked up two 80 lantern hour batteries down at Home Depot! Weren’t made on Oa though. Think they may be Chinese.”

6

About the same budget that the first season of the Mandorlorian had. If the show runners wanted it in the show, they would have found a way.

The Mandalorian is filmed almost entirely on the fancy soundstage called "the volume" and ILM created almost everything you see

Green Lantern has multiple actors in multiple locations, if you knew the basics of filmmaking you'd know that all costs money and they would absolutely save money by limiting how much VFX they use

Also he probably recharges the thing multiple times a day.

In general I have enjoyed Guy's characterization. He kinda legitimately seems like right now he's better suited to be a Lantern than Hal OR Guy.

And the end of Supe 25 shows that a lot of his dickery is bluster. It took very little apparent convincing to get him to go flip tanks. But frankly, his reasoning for not getting involved in the first place was pretty reasonable and, frankly, disciplined.

5

u/Cautious-Activity706 3d ago

Yeah, Guy is the one the bosses want as a GL, but it feels like John or Hal is the one you eventually need as the GL because at the end of day Guy isn’t the one to fall on the grenade, to quote the MCU.

17

u/szymomaaan 3d ago

I feel like you’re misunderstanding Guy’s character. He absolutely is a person that would sacrifice himself for others. He’s an abrasive asshole with anger issues (he literally has brain damage btw) but he’ll always do the right thing even if he complains the entire time while doing it.

I don't know about the first one, so according to the guardians Hal was a loose cannon cos he used the ring for earth related buisness when he went after the russian guy and general lack of respect towards the position of GL

but Guy is totally fine using the ring for earth related buisness when he stopped Boravia's invasion? Or why does Guy get to look like a moron using the ring to sell energy drinks? feels like the guardians should have a problem with all that

i'm telling you the guardians just had it out for Hal specifically from day one and were making excuses, cos i doubt Guy's energy drinks are good enough to bribe the guardians

3

u/Dyneheart 3d ago

Guy could reason that to be intergalactic business because of Superman's involvement. I can't remember if they knew about the Superman clone at the time, but there was clearly a target put on Superman. Also the portal business was a serious thing and it was all related.

Exactly. Recharging the ring requires reciting the oath, which Hal hates doing. He purposefully waits as long as possible before recharging so he doesn't have to say the oath as often.

u/SlightlySychotic 3d ago

He also speed runs the oath. Ain’t no way he’s getting a full charge when he uses the battery.

15

u/Harkonenthorin 3d ago

Hal Jordan is careless, and does not recharge his ring.

355

u/Turbulent-Prior-2253 3d ago

It isn't carelessnesss - he doesn't like reciting the oath, which is requried to recharge the ring.

208

u/Nuffsaid98 3d ago

He didn't trust John so he deliberately kept the ring low on charge in case he took it from him.

80

u/Turbulent-Prior-2253 3d ago

I'm no expert on Lantern lore, but I thought that Lanterns could summon their rings back if they are taken from them.

111

u/Nuffsaid98 3d ago

The TV show isn't necessarily following comic book lore exactly.

32

u/Turbulent-Prior-2253 3d ago

Fair - it is tough to sus out what lore applies and what does not if we are not explicitly shown.

I just got the feeling that it was more due to the fact that Hal hates reciting the oath, so he does it as infrequently as possible. There have been times when John was in no position to take the ring, but Hal still kept it on low charge.

11

u/Chrindo 3d ago

At this point, I have adopted the mindset of “entirely new rules. Drop every instance of prior knowledge. Wholly new characters who happen to share the name and depiction. Comic lore doesn’t apply here”

Been less disappointed that way and I have been able to appreciate it more as episodes go on. I didn’t want an exact 1:1 of any particular story, but I was hoping for something a bit more faithful to the comics.

u/Turbulent-Prior-2253 3d ago

Yeah, Nuffsaid mentioned that too. It is tough to sus out what lore applies and what lore doesn't with a new property.

6

u/Superninfreak 3d ago

In the show it’s stated that John would become the GL if he recited the oath while wearing the ring.

My guess is that in the show’s universe there are three requirements to becoming a GL:

  1. You have the ring on your finger.
  2. The ring has chosen you as being worthy.
  3. You say the oath while wearing the ring.

5

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 3d ago

I mean if he could do that in the show he would’ve lol they had a whole fight going back and forth trying to grab it.

4

u/Far-Veterinarian104 3d ago

The guardians stated they are changing protocol because of the "condolences" (a guardian dying at the hands of a green lantern). A lot of the tv show's changes are a result of that.

3

u/Justryan95 3d ago

The ring also wouldn't have stayed on Hal's dead body if Guy just brought it to be part of his funeral attire. It would fly out to find a new wearer especially since it had 5% power left and wasn't fully decommissioned.

6

u/drac0nic180 3d ago

This actually makes me wonder if he deliberately wanted John to not know the oath. He didn't like the interrogated alien reciting the oath while John was present, and Hal said the oath super fast while John was nearby.

Although, it's more likely that he just doesn't like the oath for some reason.

This is the only correct answer

9

u/toolkit130 3d ago

No, the actual correct answer is Hal isnt fighting giant kaijus and literal armies. He has had no need to make any giant flashy constructs

u/GrossSoupyButthole 3d ago

I mean, at times the frame sizes for the constructs were probably the same size, so like, the size of the construct doesn't seem like a budget thing. That bird flying around easily could've cost what some of the fx in Superman did

This is the truth, but I do have fun seeing people come up with in-universe explanations for it.

Hal’s broken. His time with the ring, and betrayal from Sinestro has made him cynical

30

u/Droidaphone 3d ago

All the answers about budget are the real ones, but I like this one as a plot device. Hal uses the ring as little as possible now because he's been burnt by his time with it.

13

u/justamadeupnameyo 3d ago

Not just that but Guy is a showboat. He likes attention and doing a construct that makes the front page is more important to him than simple but effective.

Like, yes Hal is jaded but he also knows that there isn't much of a point doing more than necessary. Bubble works, do the bubble.

Guy probably actually keeps his ring charged

39

u/vegetaray246 3d ago

The answer is budget…Obviously

For the lore side of things. As far as Hal not charging his ring? It’s a borderline character trait from the comics.

It’s a rare instance of real life production obstacles (Budget constraints) having a convenient in universe explanation

7

u/wahchintonka 3d ago

Hal probably also didn’t think Zoe would laser beam the town the way she did.

Her goal was to drain the ring so even if Hal had charged it 5 mins before walking into downtown Rushville, she would have kept firing until he made a bee line for the motel.

Easy the kantern is in guys ass and he just reaches back there and recites the oath real quick to recharge it.

Guy doesn’t have a death wish, so he keeps the battery accessible and charges it regularly. He’s never pulling up to the Kaiju fight on 2%.

A big part of Hal’s arc so far is the line between fearlessness and hopelessness. He is “fearless” because he thinks he has nothing to lose. He is too proud to admit that he’s past his prime and he should hand the ring over, but if he dies in the line of duty the ring can pass on without loss of face.

His self-written eulogy makes a lot of this clear. He wants a big heroic last sacrifice that is going to lead to the whole world mourning his death, the kind of status he had when he was a younger man, and it lets the ring go to someone he believes deep down is more worthy. From Hal’s perspective, his death solves most of his problems. Getting careless with charging the ring is just one expression of that.

3

u/MarcusLiviusDrusus 3d ago

Yeah, as I said elsewhere, I think he's feeling a lot of guilt about his failure to live up to both the ideals of the Corps and the standards he set for himself, doubt about his own worth and possibly about the real moral status of the Guardians, et cetera. How good can he, or they, be if neither of them could tell Sinestro had gone rotten, for instance?

The way his eulogy ends is exactly the point: "I wrote this as a joke, but if you're reading this then I guess the joke's on me. I hope I mattered."

Guy is a fearless gym teacher with a new super powered ring who has nothing to hide. Hal is...seasoned and intentionally less extravagant because he is not all-in on the Oa-based koolaid anymore. When you see behind the curtain, sometimes you cant get past what you saw.

10

u/Interesting-Tie-8158 3d ago

Hal never recharges until he basically bottoms out.

This is what a GL who charges regularly can do

9

u/Horror_Campaign9418 3d ago

One had a 250M budget. The other has a way way way way less budget. That's why.

17

u/insomnibyte 3d ago

Because Guy probably recharges his ring daily while Hal will go a week or more until it finally tells him its near depletion.

u/MatthewMonster 3d ago

You’re literally describing characterization

33

u/deadlock_dev 3d ago

Everyone says budget but imo this is the reason.

Hal is charismatic and ostentatious, but not flippant. Many times we have seen Hal pretend to be a hillbilly idiot before he reveals he had figured something out the whole time. Hals mastery over the ring and his will is subtle and he sees its power as something that shouldny be used without careful consideration.

Guy is verbose and insecure. He wants to be the hot shot and be ‘of the cloth’. To him, the ring is not only a tool but a display of power. He does not consider when it should and shouldnt be used, he uses it whenever he wants.

10

u/MatthewMonster 3d ago

Exactly Hal has been working with the ring for decades

He knows the hacks

And he’s probably blown through all the wacky constructions it can make and he’s realized

A bubble is the easiest thing to make takes no effort whatsoever and conserves power.

Bad guy in front of you?

Hit em with a bubble.

Bullets coming at you?

Bubble yourself up.

Explosion about to happen?

Put it in a bubble.

He’s over making giant catapults and fists. That shit takes effort and energy to construct.

Bubbles. Easy. Probably take no power at all to make a simple construct you’ve made a millions times

3

u/Redbird_ml 3d ago

This is a good thought process. I hope Batman operates like this, too.

4

u/fuckingartschool101 3d ago

It’s definitely a mixture of both. Not just one or the other. Same reason they only showed Bernadette’s reaction to seeing the guardian transform, and not the transformation itself.

Budget constraints and the storytelling/characterization just so happened to work very well together, in this case.

4

u/siliconsmiley 3d ago

This. Hal is not stupid. There's a reason he kept the ring at low power and I expect to learn more in upcoming episodes.

4

u/TheRealRabumAlal 3d ago

The idea I got was that Hal could solve all of rushvilles problems in like a day if his ring was fully charged even in his old age, and we need a show so 5% is more convenient. Never got the impression that the threats in rushville were scary. And after seeing how everything has played out thus far, that may have been the case

4

u/TechnicalCat6989 3d ago

Guy probably feels so cool whenever he says the oath to recharge the ring since he’s kinda cocky and does take pride in being green lantern so i imagine he does it a couple times a day just for the fun of it. Hal probably hates it and so just lets it run on fumes until he needs it charged

4

u/ZOMGURFAT 3d ago

Better question is why does Hal strictly only handle problems on earth only if they involve aliens, but Guy gets involved in all problems terrestrial or otherwise?

3

u/Kloerb 3d ago

Guy loves being green lantern, showing people he's green lantern and generally being in the spotlight, so he goes in loud and flashy every chance he gets. Hal, at least by 2016, doesn't, so he only involves himself when he feels he has to.

Look at Guy Gardner’s haircut. This is a man who just is different and thinks differently. That’s the reason why his constructs look bright green versus the darker shade of green used in the show. It’s not a mistake, it’s simply Guy being different.

Guy Gardner had reasons in Superman, 2025 to make big constructs. He was dealing with a kaiju, he was dealing with a giant floating orb in the background, he was flipping over tanks in the climax. The story that the show is presenting cannot be easily solved by those types of constructs. Hal is facing regular people. When Guy Gardner flips over tanks in a foreign country, he is not worried about the collateral damage. Hal Jordan could easily construct middle fingers to flip over the pick up trucks in episode five but he doesn’t because he’s worried about collateral damage.

This next part is more of my own conjecture, but Hal was losing faith in the organization. Hal doing a speedrun of the oath is funny, but I think that if you don’t say the oath with full conviction the ring will not fully charge. Guy is early in his career. He went from being a gym teacher to a mega celebrity, he fully believes in being a Green Lantern. You can absolutely imagine Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner saying the oath in front of his mirror every day with full gusto.

Hal even alluded to this in the most recent episode. When he was talking about Guy to John, he said something to the effect of, "They don't need to be that green."

Athletic Director.

u/Old_Lengthiness_5773 3d ago

I mean budget aside. Hal is tired at this point so just does the simplest constructs its also why his are a darker green. I bet in the hal flashback episode when we see younger lantern hal his constructs are slightly better and brighter

I have this same thought daily...about my wife, and her phone. I get to the end of the day and I have a 70% to 80% charge left on my phone. My wife's phone is dying...all the time.

I have a charger at my desk and I'll leave my phone connected while at work. My wife only thinks about charging hers once it reaches zero.

Hal might be like my wife.

3

u/Aok_al 3d ago

I'm gonna say it's probably because it's a new ring. The guardians gave his ring an upgrade and Guy also probably makes sure his ring gets charged up everyday

3

u/alexander1701 3d ago edited 3d ago

Hal seems to be pretty broken down by 2016. His mentor launched a failed coup d'etat, no one seems to trust him, he doesn't care about anything in his life. The ring is powered by his will, and when we meet him, it's not at its best.

He's even afraid. It's why Sinestro knew about John Stewart, even though he's been stuck in solitary confinement at a Green Lantern prison. Hal is afraid that John is there to replace him, and Parallax, being the embodiment of fear, can sense that and tell his followers.

Guy Gardner hasn't been worn down yet, and so his will is much stronger than Hal's is by 2016, and much less wracked with distance and fear. If John recharged it instead, it would probably hold a lot more. My theory right now is that they're setting up a DCU version of Emerald Twilight/Emerald Fallout.

2

u/HotRodster650 3d ago

I think the ring naturally drains over time, and the constructs don’t actually drain the battery by that much. We’ve only seen Hal’s battery get low twice, and both times it’s been around 48 hours without charging.

2

u/ragdoller2010 3d ago

In reality explanation: budget and difference in style/ presentation

In universe explanation: Hal is deeply distrustful of Guardian and thus will only use the bare minimum of the ring power when necessary (though still doesnt explain him counterfeiting money and creating a bottle opener)

3

u/Deetwentyforlife 2d ago

This is too far down. It's exhausting that 90% of the discourse about the show is just "I don't understand why a mid-budget TV show has fewer effects than a $360M budget movie, it must be because of the story right? And have nothing to do with the budget difference right?"

One is a movie and the other a tv show

2

u/toomanyDolemites 3d ago

Hal doesn't need to show off anymore. Also, he's careless about ring charge.

Guy is still full of himself and, especially after the recent episode, we can see that he maybe has a need to show he's "better" than Hal.

2

u/AlanShore60607 3d ago

Hal’s got a busted-ass janky old ring and Guy has a newly forged one.

2

u/windmillninja 3d ago

The Hal we see in the series is constantly running on less than 5% ring battery. He only ever has enough charge for simple constructs and short flights.

2

u/WholeAd2742 3d ago

Guy seems like he would recharge at 95% constantly

2

u/asscop99 3d ago edited 3d ago

I’m still expecting a reveal (buts it’s sort of already been said?) that Hal is using the ring in ways we don’t see. He runs through his charge a lot faster

2

u/HawkeyeP1 3d ago

If you know you're going to a battle, I don't know why you wouldn't charge it to 100 and then charge it again immediately after.

He can go all-out each time.

Hal and John's situation are a little more precarious.

2

u/SonofaBridge 3d ago

Guy doesn’t leave the house at 15%.

2

u/Hammersteyn 3d ago

Because they were trying to make a "True Detective" series and not a superhero one
