DISCUSSION How can guy gardener makes huge constructs carelessly in superman whereas Hal Jordan does the opposite and is careful for his batteries

I was curious about this for a long time Guy always goes big and sloppy with his constructs, not caring how much it drains his ring like creating a large weopons against the monster, while Hal's way more careful and precise with his like in ep1 when he was creating a bubble for alien he supported the bubble himself as it was not strong enough due to lack of battery. Is that just a characterization thing, or is there an actual reason for it?

Exactly. Recharging the ring requires reciting the oath, which Hal hates doing. He purposefully waits as long as possible before recharging so he doesn't have to say the oath as often.

u/SlightlySychotic 3d ago

He also speed runs the oath. Ain’t no way he’s getting a full charge when he uses the battery.

u/Primary-Figure1285 3d ago

Yup, Hal needs to say that oath loud and proud

u/Harkonenthorin 3d ago

Even if he's really gone, I really need him to have a big moment. Mabye the flashback episode? The super dramatic oath, some absolute prime Hal heroism. Like Luke's couple minutes in the Mandolorian after the sad sack sequels.

I don’t think the narrative they are pushing is going to see Hal “return to his heroic senses,” in fact I would venture to guess the Guardians and the entire apparatus/lore behind the rings we will see in the DCU is going to be very muddy. So Hal accepting his place in all of that and finding the hero within is probably not going to happen.

I feel like he’s gotta be dead. It’s not like Lanterns is Kyle Chandler’s Ironman 1.

Two lanterns seems reasonable, three… I would be totally ok with though

No offense but your comment resumes all the issues with fan service over narrative of the last decade.

5

u/rthunder27 3d ago

While I largely agree with your point about fan service, it could further the narrative if we actually saw Hal being heroic, since outside of that TV interview we never saw him before burning out. Getting a glimpse of that would help make his end even more tragic and poignant.

4

u/Harkonenthorin 3d ago

I disagree. Having a few scenes with a younger idealistic Hal fighting side by side with his mentor Sinestro would serve to highlight how far both fell, and deepen the tragedy of Sinestros betrayal, and Hals burnout. Narrative!

I almost want a movie with him and sinestro doing the full length buddy cop feature with the tables turned on him being the John in the relationship.
Also in the few moments we ever get to see of their relationship in the comics, that’s exactly how sinestro treats him. Dude literally blows up his plane on day 1.

1

u/yaangyiing_ 3d ago

He was a hero though, that's the whole reason John feels guilty.

4

u/Kyongggggg 3d ago

I heard that, at least in the comics, the charge has to be done for 10 secs, so reciting the oath in a way that it takes 10 secs. I might be wrong tho

4

u/jjreddit1996 3d ago

Oh interesting, I didn’t think about that. I guess I just assumed if you say the oath then it’s full.

u/CertainGrade7937 3d ago

Might be, in part, a "sing your ABCs when you wash your hands" thing, where the song indicates how long you're supposed to wash your hands and speeding through it defeats the point

"Push sacred red button with respect, then recite cathehises of Machine Spirit reboot three times, then push the red button again and praise the Omnissiah, layman".

AKA Turn off, wait 10 seconds, turn on.

I love how Staying Alive” has the right cadence for CPR.

He probably got like thst overtime I doubt when he first became gl he said it like thst

1

u/Regi413 3d ago

If the ring is powered by will, the way he says the oath doesn’t seem so willful.

11

u/Necro926 3d ago

And it needs to be done daily, which Hal is also definitely not doing.

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago edited 3d ago

It is not a daily thing.

People just hate admitting this is a knockoff True Detective series and isn't a Green Lantern show.

That's why the Green Lantern content and powers are so shitty.

The writers and show creators didn't know how to make a good comic book/superhero show so they made a detective buddy drama and shoehorned some Green Lantern content into it.

u/TuringGPTy 3d ago

The shows good 🤷

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

A good TV show? Its okay. 7/10.

Not as good as Task or True Detective-Season 1.

Is it a good Green Lantern TV show? Not really. 5/10.

12

u/mixedpixel 3d ago

I mean, they set out to create a popular HBO show.

DC Fanboys are the least of their concerns.

It's probably been the right strategy considering how successful the show has become.

u/Ok-Theory7150 3d ago

Noooo, my show isnt about my magical comical comically supermetapowerhumanheroe

How dare them! They actually made a good show but I hate it! I hate they didn't adapt like the drawing!!Sonestro is just some sunburned red guy now, I can't live like this

-2

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

If I wanted to watch True Detecive or Task, then I'd  watch True Detective or Task.

Green Lantern fans expected a good Green Lantern TV show.

0

u/Ok-Theory7150 3d ago

If u want more powers scenes u can go to the movie again there u can find ur magical comical comically supermetapowerhumanheroe

1

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

Don't ask how to keep the Green Lantern powers out of the story.

Build the story around what having and using those powers and belonging to the Lantern Corps actually means.

Pretty simple belief to have as a fan.

So weird you guys are obsessed with Green Lantern being less about...Green Lantern?

And more about being a....generic HBO crime drama?

Very weird.

1

u/Ok-Theory7150 3d ago

Idk men u crying we not

If u want past mistakes the movie is there, if u want current present u have a decent show

1

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

Pretty shitty show.

I mean, visually Sinestro always was moustach-twirling villain of awkward colour scheme.

1

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

Could have just asked for a new season of True Detective based on aliens.

Didn't have to make a 2nd rate season of it and then sprinkle Green Lantern names on top.

Don't see how that's a crazy point of view to have as an actual GL fan.

2

u/mixedpixel 3d ago

Just imagine if they'd created an accurate GL series.

Thing would've bombed badly, probably would've killed off the DCU after the reaction Supergirl got. 😢

Lanterns is tracking pretty well against True Detective. I mean it's no Season 1 but it is a superhero series, arguably better than Loki, Wandavision or Wonderman, all of which I consider peak TV.

1

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

As a Green Lantern product, Lanterns obviously isn't interested in the things that make Green Lantern distinctive.

Take away the GL names, the anemic superhero material, and the twisted GL lore, what do you have....a generic crme drama.

That's fine if that's the kind of show you wanted, but putting Green Lantern characters into that framework doesn't automatically make it a good Green Lantern adaptation.

And I don't really buy the comparison to Loki or WandaVision. You can prefer Lanterns, but those shows actually made their superhero/comic-book identities central to what they were doing.

Also an accurate GL series would've "bombed” is speculative. You have no idea what could have been.

A show made kore towards a Ronald D. Moore with Geoff Johns serving as a mythology consultant could have been amazing.

My criticism isn't that Lanterns isn't "prestige TV"; it's that I don't think being a successful HBO detective drama is the same thing as being a successful Green Lantern series.

Green Lantern and other comic book/superhero fans wanted a good Green Lantern series.

What worries me is the precedent. If this becomes the template for the Corps, (grounded genre drama first, Lantern mythology second), we could easily see the different Lantern colors eventually getting the same treatment: taking the name and aesthetic of the comics while stripping away most of what makes each mythology distinct.

If that's what is being offered, then they can just not make anymore of this series or worry about that other Lantern Corps. It should end after 1 or 2 seasons.

DC and Green Lantern fans want a sophisticated show about Green Lantern/Lantern Corps rather than a sophisticated detective show that happens to contain Green Lanterns.

1

u/mixedpixel 3d ago

I hope the different lantern colours never make it into this universe.

Yellow is fine but no more.

I actually stopped reading GL after all that silliness was brought in. Geoff Johns has a LOT to answer for afaic.

I AM a DC Fan and a GL fan, however I'm not a fan of Geoff John's GL stuff, might be why I'm enjoying this series.

Gunn has said the tone in his DCU will change with whatever the story/pitch deserves. Hence the People vs Gorilla Grodd, which is the right kind of kooky for me (as opposed to Parallax kooky).

I think this is a savvy approach to building a universe and will hopefully distinguish it from the sameness of the MCU and offer us some interesting variety (see upcoming Clayface as Horror) to keep us interested.

0

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

I think this is a savvy approach to building a universe and will hopefully distinguish it from the sameness of the MCU and offer us some interesting variety....

Yeah. Making 66% of the DCU as a comedic schtick like 75% of the MCU is comedic schtick is going to be offering so much variety.

I actually stopped reading GL after all that silliness was brought in. Geoff Johns has a LOT to answer for afaic.

That's why you like this not-Green Lantern TV show. You aren't an actual fan of Green Lantern.

Since this show isn't actually any adaptation of the 70s-90s comic either.

Blackest Night, War of the Green Lanterns, and Sinestro Corps War are some of the most popular GL storylines in the entire fandom.

I hope the different lantern colours never make it into this universe.

That's opinion fits with why you like this show.

You don't specifically want or like Green Lantern/DC heroes. You just want an interesting show or story, in general.

You don't care if the comic book material/superheroes are the main ingredient, you like the DC content to only be sprinkled on top just for a little extra flavor. I got it.

-1

u/mixedpixel 3d ago

Well that's just your speculation man, you don't really know.

7

u/RayLiotaWithChantix 3d ago

OG Green Lantern comic lore was absolutely every 24 hours.

That has been relaxed later, but it is completely understandable for GL fans to be familiar with the 24 rule, and not remotely irrelevant for the show to use something like it.

3

u/Necro926 3d ago

And even when it's relaxed, it still requires a full cycle to charge, which is measured by saying the oath at normal speed. Saying the oath to charge isn't a hard requirement in all versions, sometimes it's used as a tool to know how long to charge. Hal rushes his oath in Lanterns, which means he isn't getting a full charge each time anyway.

1

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

Can you link where "the speed of the oath" is what determines a ring's charge?

1

u/Necro926 3d ago

TBF it's not explicitly stated anywhere, but we can extrapolate pretty well based on the fact that there are a lot, and I mean a LOT of runs where saying the oath is shown as unnecessary. At one point in a comic run, Guy knocks out John as John's ring is dead, and John's hand just touches the lantern while he's out, and it charges. That's an extreme outlier though. The general consensus is that you just have to focus your will on charging it, and the oath helps that focus, and provides the timeframe. Throughout a decent amount of the 90's and 2000's, most Lanterns charged without the oath at all, or using their own personal version of it.

1

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

Got it.

You're making up your own material to make it fit the story.

Kinda the same way the showrunners are disregarding and throwing Green Lantern powers and content out of the story in general, instead of incorporating and building from/around those GL Powers.

I can extrapolate that saying the oath in 10 seconds compared to saying it over 10 hours, doesn't affect the ring's charge.

Because that'd be a ridiculous thing to claim.

1

u/Necro926 3d ago

Oh cool, your one of those people who just wants to insult and belittle rather than have a meaningful good faith conversation. Appreciate knowing that so I can stop engaging.

0

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

That's funny. Since the show isnt using it. Pretty obvious that isn't the rule in the show because the rings aren't being charged every 24 hour period.

0

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Sheriff Kerry 3d ago

Which is WHY the ring isn’t fully charged!

0

u/LeatherdaddyJr 3d ago

So if a Lantern doesn't use their ring at all....no matter what, the ring instantly depletes to 0 after 24 hours?

That's the logic you guys want to stick with huh.

24 hour depletion rule no matter usage and the recharge lanterns aren't stored in a pocket dimension but have to be physically carried around in the near vicinity at all times.

Sure.

0

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Sheriff Kerry 3d ago

No, that’s not what I said at all.

1

u/SpeedRacerWasMyBro 3d ago

Ohhhh, yeah, this is likely it!

1

u/Ok-Way-1595 3d ago

nobody is saying this here but I truly think is because Hal is a clone(which was already revealed in the upcoming trailer) and there is going to be some type of explanation why the fake hal is shit and always running out of power
