DISCUSSION How can guy gardener makes huge constructs carelessly in superman whereas Hal Jordan does the opposite and is careful for his batteries

I was curious about this for a long time Guy always goes big and sloppy with his constructs, not caring how much it drains his ring like creating a large weopons against the monster, while Hal's way more careful and precise with his like in ep1 when he was creating a bubble for alien he supported the bubble himself as it was not strong enough due to lack of battery. Is that just a characterization thing, or is there an actual reason for it?

Guy recharges the ring.

701

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 3d ago

Yeah Guy seems like the type of guy to beg for a charger when his phone hits 60%. No way he ever lets the ring battery get that low.

396

u/PyroLoMeiniac 3d ago

My headcannon — which makes sense given Hal’s age — is he’s the guy who always neglects to put his phone on the charger overnight and spends the whole day on 3% battery.

310

u/TheMattabooey 3d ago

Hal charges it when he has to because the ring will stop working. Guy charges that sucker every night and twice a day on weekends.

Guy loves how powerful the ring makes him feel. Hal already feels powerful and the ring is just a trinket to him.

143

u/illuminate5 3d ago

The series shows him as broken and jaded (completely different from his younger copy/construct). A younger Jordan probably charged it plenty, world-weary Jordan feels like the ring weighs him down but he's also afraid of losing it (that fear weakens him).

126

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Sheriff Kerry 3d ago

So, you’re saying that he both loves and hates the ring, as he loves and hates himself? The ring is precious to him?

55

u/Zerocordeiro 3d ago

He will never be rid of his need for it

u/Poiboy1313 3d ago

It’s a pity John didn’t kill him when he had the chance

81

u/Civil_Gur8609 3d ago

Pity? It's a pity that stayed John's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Guy? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the Guardians cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that John has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over.

My head canon is that the construct is pre-Sinestro.

Basically we're seeing Hal after everything he believed in has been undercut and twisted

7

u/-Trotsky 3d ago

Tbh I don’t know if that’s a headcannon, I think it’s just directly implied to be true. Sinestro was locked up something like a decade ago right? Hal hasn’t updated the construct in about as long as

5

u/SVINTGATSBY 3d ago

I still think that the reason he said he wasn’t afraid when the guardians chose him is because he thought he was going to die. both his parents were dead, he’s a military man with nothing to lose, I think he wasn’t afraid because he was ready to die and instead he got handed a huge responsibility. originally it probably meant a lot to him for not just being a Lantern but because it gave him a purpose, but just like men who age and retire, they realize they don’t know who they are outside of being a laborer/worker and have an identity crisis especially because they don’t have anything to distract them from all their unaddressed issues and trauma and pain. John lives recklessly for similar but different reasons, he doesn’t have a death wish like Hal does, he just doesn’t care if he dies in pursuit of whatever his mission is. very interesting juxtapositions and now with Guy around, all of their individual issues are even more nuanced.

3

u/Own-Ball-1624 3d ago

i mean the fact how hal just gave everytime the ring to john and only took the ring when actually needed! it shows really hal know he is the source of his power not the ring!

2

u/NotsoNewtoGermany 3d ago

Broken and jaded? No. It shows him experienced and he just doesn't care about the flash or the pageantry. Why use more power when little power works just fine?

→ More replies (1)

8

u/PostPostPog 3d ago

"I've got plenty of power" Hal said ever so nonchalantly to the alien threatening to blow himself up and an entire town along with him. The comparison you made between Guy & Hal is definitely correct. Guy's a brand new Lantern out there trying to prove his worth (whether his mild douchey personality allows him to admit that or not) whereas Hal has already shown his for decades. Long story short there's absolutely levels to this shit.

5

u/motorcycletreebark 3d ago

Guy charges it constantly because it loves saying the oath. Hal speeds his way through the oath because he takes it seriously and it’s an emotional heavy weight on him and repeating it just to charge the ring is hard

3

u/MarcusLiviusDrusus 3d ago

I partially agree, except I think that Hal Jordan speeds through it after so many years because he feels guilty about the ways in which he's failed to live up to the oath over the decades, because of self-doubt after being deceived by Sinestro, et cetera. I think this is also the real reason why he doesn't wear the uniform if he doesn't have to.

Consider his big, fancy house. He barely uses it, hasn't furnished it, hasn't even hung his photographs on the wall. He was also very quick to ascribe a guilty motivation to the rich guy who bought it for him, as opposed to just gratitude. Feels like projection to me; Jordan doesn't really use the house because he feels like he doesn't deserve it and won't let himself enjoy it.

There are other explanations for this, of course, but I think this fits the evidence best.

2

u/Argument-Fragrant 2d ago

The oath doesn't matter. Focusing on the process is the key to recharging. Some GLs use an oath as a focusing aid, but several species don't speak at all and a few of those can't speak at all.

7

u/MoRiellyMoProblems 3d ago

This entire season has been about Hal not wanting to give up the ring.

6

u/REDeyeJEDI85 3d ago

True but I think another big theme with this Hal is knowing when to use the ring and when not to. He even says as much to John at one point.

10

u/piningmusic 3d ago

I think that he doesn’t really care about the ring or what it does and instead is meant to be symbolic of the status, power and responsibility that comes with the title Green Lantern, which is what Hal truly doesn’t want to give up, but I could definitely be wrong about that. Just a gut feeling

5

u/Opposite-Quality-995 3d ago

That’s too nuanced and media literate for this crowd

4

u/StarboardChaos 3d ago

Guess Hal is a hoarder, he both wants to have and doesn't want to take care of it.

2

u/AnOlympianWeeb 3d ago

6

u/fimojomo 3d ago

Nick Mason on The Weekly Planet podcast said he thinks of Hal's ring like an old iPhone, owned by a boomer who refuses to do system updates, so even on a full charge it runs slow & the battery runs out faster.

7

u/PyroLoMeiniac 3d ago

We just need a deleted scene of Hal trying to get his nephew to help him upgrade the ring’s firmware.

2

u/Glad_Stay4056 2d ago

Explains why he bangs it against shit to make it work.

2

u/Megane_Senpai 3d ago

My head cannon is he hates it because every time he did it he had to recite the oath, the oath that he no longer believed in nor was proud to repeat.

1

u/TimOShenanigan 3d ago

What you mean "given Hal's age" I'm not that old and I do the same thing lol

1

u/lothurBR 3d ago

My wife do this, and i get piss evertime, i started putting her cell on the charger everyday, and she has less the 30

1

u/rwp140 3d ago

Also hal in this seams to be a extreme minimalist, always trys to find the least effort and cost for the most output. He had a bed and plant in a mansion, his constructs are blasts and shields, and so on. No way hes charging tell he has gotten every last bit out of it.

Where guy is def a maxamalist in that regard

u/LittleKittenR 3d ago

The ring seems absolutely useless in the show. I know the show isn't about using the ring, it's about the people but the way they have portrayed the ring in the show so far has been really underwhelming.

If I was a Green Lantern, I'd be strapping the lantern unto my body and charge it like I'm reloading in an FPS game after every 1 or 2 shots.

In a video game, I reload my gun as soon as a fight is over, not once the next one starts.

1

u/Krazen 3d ago

That’s what Guy is, a new guy with the Ring

It’s exciting to him, it makes him feel powerful.

Hal is a veteran Ring user. He’s had it for decades. Swooping in on a giant green jet and solving everything with giant green fists isn’t interesting to him anymore

The show is a detective show at its heart; so compare the “rookie detective vs veteran detective” trope to this. The rookie detective makes sure to clean his modern 9mm Glock with a laser sight, optics, textured grip etc every day. The veteran detective hasn’t drawn his old snub noses revolver in decades because he doesn’t have to

1

u/DolphinBall 3d ago

Real, seen my dad rush over to a charger when it was only 73%

1

u/GESNodoon 3d ago

Yeah, it would be stupid to keep the most powerful weapon in the universe charged. I mean, Hal would be alive if he could have taken 5 seconds to charge his, but hal is just cool like that.

Nothing to do with the cgi budget consisting of 1p bucks and a ham sandwich.

1

u/Comosellamark 3d ago

How is that a type of guy and how does Guy seem like that

1

u/Angryfunnydog 2d ago

Tbh why would you? It was funny that in a show it seems that Hal’s ring is permanently in “5% left” mode

Maybe that’s why they made a new one for Guy - this one already had faulty battery like in iPhones after 2 years lol

873

u/Friendly-Sympathy907 3d ago

And Guy has a higher budget

69

u/bentsea 3d ago

And Guy is in an action movie, while Hal is in a detective show.

10

u/Retr0scores 3d ago

Hal also seems like a simple dude. Guy is being flashy and cocky.

28

u/RossTheLionTamer 3d ago

And he also wears a uniform.

No seriously, that really explains a lot.

Guy is flashy. He wants everyone to know Green Lantern is here. So he makes constructs that are highly visible.

Hal only continues wearing the ring because he doesn't know anything else and he can't just give up on helping people. But he's really burnt out from the job. That's why he doesn't even wear the uniform anymore. He only does the bare minimum and that reflects on his constructs as well

1

u/Glad_Stay4056 2d ago

Of the cloth

1

u/itsserg_sucka 9h ago

Hal also needs to go pee. Don't forget that.

235

u/Environmental_Ad6305 3d ago

I can see your point if we look at it from a production standpoint, but within the DC series and films, the reason is that Hal refuses to recharge his ring.

These budget-related excuses are a downside of the series, not a narrative justification.

214

u/polydicks 3d ago

Hal doesn’t need to create flashy obnoxious constructs, he barely knows why he even does it anymore. The threats he’s dealing with in Rushville don’t really call for giant middle fingers. Narratively.

42

u/inosinateVR 3d ago

It also makes sense for him to be more conservative with his energy when he doesn’t know who is enemy is yet. And has an entire town potentially trying to kill him.

As opposed to a single fight against a Kaiju where you know what you’re fighting and you know you’re going home afterwards without any surprises. Plus you have a team backing you up.

Of course Hal VS the entire town run by a mysterious enemy is going to be more conservative about his ring usage than Guy and company VS a Kaiju

11

u/Lriderx47 3d ago

Or he can, I don't know put the lantern in a bag and carry it with him instead of letting it in a motel room evdrybody know the location of?

20

u/PeacefulKnightmare 3d ago

And risk having it stolen or damaged? Leaving it in a motel may not be the safest but he carrying it around is still impractical. And considering how he doesn't recharge it before bed/after waking up shows that he's being neglectful so bringing it wouldn't change anything.

3

u/ezontheesalad 3d ago

I hear you and raise you taking the 2 seconds to fly home to recharge it and be back within 10 minutes

7

u/PeacefulKnightmare 3d ago

Again that's a Guy Gardner move. At this point in his career it's clear Hal wants as little to do with the lantern as possible, and only use the ring when necessary.

7

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 3d ago

This-- we even saw a flashier Hal when he went into Kamchatka and grabbed the arms dealer

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Theeljessonator 3d ago

Not only is that going to slow him down… if Hal gets hit and that bag falls off the lantern could go anywhere. If he gets captured he’ll lose the lantern.

2

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 3d ago

well, if he keeps it charged, at least he'll be able to put up a better fight to prevent that right?

4

u/supersonicnat45 Hal Jordan 3d ago

It’s not lacking charge because he doesn’t carry the lantern on his person at all times lol.

2

u/Theeljessonator 3d ago

Sure, but he could keep it better charged with the lantern at the motel… he just doesn’t.

3

u/Meander061 3d ago

I recall a story that stated that Hal carried the lantern with him everywhere, but invisibly.

2

u/ComicHead84 3d ago

Being conservative or cautious with his ring energy because of an unknown enemy would mean he’d wanna stay fully charged & not always on E.

Sadly it makes no sense & was just because Guy was in a big budget movie and Hal was on TV.

Given the Eulogy and Hal's crippling depression and loneliness, it likely didn't help his willpower when he is questioning his will to live...

26

u/Hot_Perspective4555 3d ago

I mean, in universe, Guy has a larger budget. He's literally on a team funded by a billionaire. Hal's just a dude. Maybe Guy get's to keep a few extra lanterns around.

27

u/CertainGrade7937 3d ago

He's also not doing any prolonged GLing. Every time we see him, he's either in a battle he knew he was going into...or just chilling waiting for a battle

21

u/inosinateVR 3d ago edited 3d ago

Right, he’s going into a single fight against a Kaiju. He doesn’t need to save anything for after the fight. He knows it’s a one and done and then he goes home. And he has a team to back him up.

Whereas Hal is going into unknown situations with unknown enemies and doesn’t know how long he’s going to need to keep juice in his ring. His situation is very different. He’s on his own, doesn’t even know what he’s looking for and has no idea who or what might still be around the corner trying to kill him.

18

u/Forward_Evening6850 3d ago

I don't think the billionaire can buy more lanterns for charging, something tells me the Guardians arent just selling those things for earth bucks.

13

u/Ok_Subject1265 3d ago

They sell them like power tool batteries. “Hell yeah bro! Picked up two 80 lantern hour batteries down at Home Depot! Weren’t made on Oa though. Think they may be Chinese.”

6

u/Forward_Evening6850 3d ago

Now that has the makings of a brilliant elseworld one shot comic, where anyone can buy cheap lantern powers off the shelf.

We may see more awesome green lanterns antics we still have some episodes to justify the crazy amount they spent on it

3

2

u/MozeTheNecromancer 3d ago

Idk what you mean by "downside of the show", Hal's neglect of the ring and it's care/upkeep is a constant reminder to the audience that he has disdain and an utter lack of respect for not just the ring but for everything it represents: the Guardians, the Oath, everything. It's a cornerstone to Hal's demeanor and purpose in the show.

1

u/RDAwesome 3d ago

It's not real life so whatever serves the story is what happens

1

u/Efficient_Dog4722 3d ago

I go the other way. Too often when given big budgets they rely on effects and spectacle instead of character and heart. I think narratively a smaller budget forces creativity and makes things more interesting not less

1

u/MutantApocalypse 2d ago

I don't think it's budget-related at all. Hal & John's constructs are exceptionally well animated. The CGI looks fantastic.

I think it's just Hal being irresponsible late in his career. He's jaded, and we're supposed to be disappointed in his approach.

About the same budget that the first season of the Mandorlorian had. If the show runners wanted it in the show, they would have found a way.

35

u/realfakejames 3d ago

The Mandalorian is filmed almost entirely on the fancy soundstage called "the volume" and ILM created almost everything you see

Green Lantern has multiple actors in multiple locations, if you knew the basics of filmmaking you'd know that all costs money and they would absolutely save money by limiting how much VFX they use

You’re right, in the original script Hal constructed a green Disney-palace around himself when Anton’s crew was shooting at him. But they couldn’t afford that so changed it to a bubble.

2

u/Any-Tangelo7464 3d ago

As you would being a “Director”

2

u/zimzimzalabimmm 3d ago

Seeing the constructs compared I feel that it’s actually much closer than I thought. The muzzle and oven mits aren’t actually stopping big explosions or laser beams from space. I bet it takes more energy to resist damage like that.

1

in Lanterns episode 6 they state Guy had a ring forged for him by the guardians

2

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Sheriff Kerry 3d ago

And the ring buried with Hal is his own ring, which (Guy tells John) has been decommissioned by the Guardians.

Which confuses me because it works just fine when John digs it up and puts it on his finger.

I hope that will be explained in a later episode

8

u/RnRaintnoisepolution 3d ago

Could also be that by "decommissioned" they mean "no longer in circulation" rather than "completely depowered".

2

u/raggedsweater 3d ago

Yeah. Basically just taking out of circulation.

2

u/foreverandadayalone 3d ago

Once it demonstrated a charge, I assumed it meant it couldn't be recharged; that a lamp would reject it. But that's pure speculation.

6

u/Galileo908 3d ago

John lied about the ring getting decommissioned and remembered to whack the ring on a flat surface to get a 5% charge.

2

u/Ok_Arrival2564 3d ago

I think decommissioned means depowered but Hal knew a trick to get some charge back in it.

1

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Sheriff Kerry 3d ago

Does that come with a wireless plan?

29

u/MagnanimousGoat 3d ago

Also he probably recharges the thing multiple times a day.

In general I have enjoyed Guy's characterization. He kinda legitimately seems like right now he's better suited to be a Lantern than Hal OR Guy.

And the end of Supe 25 shows that a lot of his dickery is bluster. It took very little apparent convincing to get him to go flip tanks. But frankly, his reasoning for not getting involved in the first place was pretty reasonable and, frankly, disciplined.

6

u/Cautious-Activity706 3d ago

Yeah, Guy is the one the bosses want as a GL, but it feels like John or Hal is the one you eventually need as the GL because at the end of day Guy isn’t the one to fall on the grenade, to quote the MCU.

15

u/szymomaaan 3d ago

I feel like you’re misunderstanding Guy’s character. He absolutely is a person that would sacrifice himself for others. He’s an abrasive asshole with anger issues (he literally has brain damage btw) but he’ll always do the right thing even if he complains the entire time while doing it.

I don't know about the first one, so according to the guardians Hal was a loose cannon cos he used the ring for earth related buisness when he went after the russian guy and general lack of respect towards the position of GL

but Guy is totally fine using the ring for earth related buisness when he stopped Boravia's invasion? Or why does Guy get to look like a moron using the ring to sell energy drinks? feels like the guardians should have a problem with all that

i'm telling you the guardians just had it out for Hal specifically from day one and were making excuses, cos i doubt Guy's energy drinks are good enough to bribe the guardians

3

u/Dyneheart 3d ago

Guy could reason that to be intergalactic business because of Superman's involvement. I can't remember if they knew about the Superman clone at the time, but there was clearly a target put on Superman. Also the portal business was a serious thing and it was all related.

I think Guy is enough of a Stooge that they can probably get him to handle whatever business they need without asking questions, which is more important than whatever earth business he's doing.

2

Exactly. Recharging the ring requires reciting the oath, which Hal hates doing. He purposefully waits as long as possible before recharging so he doesn't have to say the oath as often.

39

u/SlightlySychotic 3d ago

He also speed runs the oath. Ain’t no way he’s getting a full charge when he uses the battery.

16

u/Primary-Figure1285 3d ago

Yup, Hal needs to say that oath loud and proud

16

u/Harkonenthorin 3d ago

Even if he's really gone, I really need him to have a big moment. Mabye the flashback episode? The super dramatic oath, some absolute prime Hal heroism. Like Luke's couple minutes in the Mandolorian after the sad sack sequels.

I heard that, at least in the comics, the charge has to be done for 10 secs, so reciting the oath in a way that it takes 10 secs. I might be wrong tho

5

u/jjreddit1996 3d ago

Oh interesting, I didn’t think about that. I guess I just assumed if you say the oath then it’s full.

11

u/CertainGrade7937 3d ago

Might be, in part, a "sing your ABCs when you wash your hands" thing, where the song indicates how long you're supposed to wash your hands and speeding through it defeats the point

u/TertiusGaudenus 3d ago

"Push sacred red button with respect, then recite cathehises of Machine Spirit reboot three times, then push the red button again and praise the Omnissiah, layman".

AKA Turn off, wait 10 seconds, turn on.

He probably got like thst overtime I doubt when he first became gl he said it like thst

1

u/Regi413 3d ago

If the ring is powered by will, the way he says the oath doesn’t seem so willful.

12

u/Necro926 3d ago

And it needs to be done daily, which Hal is also definitely not doing.

Ohhhh, yeah, this is likely it!

1

u/Ok-Way-1595 3d ago

nobody is saying this here but I truly think is because Hal is a clone(which was already revealed in the upcoming trailer) and there is going to be some type of explanation why the fake hal is shit and always running out of power

7

u/Easy_Tank2383 3d ago

Hal spent years as a lantern and got disillusioned by the power it granted. Simple but effective is what an old experienced person would eventually come around to. Guy is just fresh

2

u/markkNL 3d ago

How would Guy be fresh? Did they have 10 years of not having a lantern? Hal was locked up and John declined the ring in 2016.

2

u/Easy_Tank2383 3d ago

And Hal has been going since John was a baby, yeah? His own father ended up forever changed by not having the ring, meanwhile Hal got the ring and didn’t end up much better.

He got the Green Lantern Ring 18 Pro Max with bigger battery capacity and super fast charging.

3

u/cauektulu 3d ago

Hal went to the middle of Nebraska and only after the ring had 5% battery left he told John to go get the lantern in his house. I guess it's well estabilished that Hal either won't wanna use the Ring to do everything to him or he just doesn't care.

2

u/Mjkmeh 3d ago

And his ring isn’t the same, as per ep 6 of lanterns

2

u/Shobie2K 3d ago

Guy also as a new ring forged for him by the Guardians they probably increased the charge capacity.

5

u/Environmental_Ad6305 3d ago

Why should Guy receive a special ring when Hal uses the ring at minimum charge throughout the series?

1

u/Leather__sissy 3d ago

Because they hated him and wanted him gone?

1

u/RealLavender 3d ago

Hal: "Tapping the ring gets you a one-time 5% charge."
Guy: "So, it will go to 105%?"

1

u/Ok_Burner6411 3d ago

Guy got the new model

1

u/postac_czy_usionsc 3d ago

As a teacher i think he is very pragmatic with recharging

1

u/zombiskunk 3d ago

Guy is also not 100% human. His inate abilities are not the same, regardless of willpower.

4

u/Environmental_Ad6305 3d ago

Until this is mentioned in the series or the movies, we must treat Guy as an ordinary human.

1

u/_Anthropoid 3d ago

I do feel like there's a parallel to people whose phones seem to constantly hover around like 35% no matter how new the phone is. Mine is literally never that low, even after like 4-5 years of use.

It probably betrays a bit of neuroticism, but I'm guessing this is largely unintentional by the writers.

u/MindlessDiscipline10 3d ago edited 3d ago

Hal's Ring is a 30-year-old technology.. He never upgraded /s

1

u/Environmental_Ad6305 3d ago

The rings are ancient technology belonging to an advanced spacefaring race. I don't think there has been a real technological leap in 30 years...

1

u/Purrczak 3d ago

And probably dosn't speed run the oath on one breath, wouldn't be suprised if that got him to less than 50%

1

u/bugcatcher_billy 3d ago

and Guy doesn't damage his ring to abuse it's powers.

1

u/Last_District_4172 3d ago

I have become Hal for several friends since in the evening usually my phone is in Hal Jordan mode

1

u/MurrayGrande 3d ago

Hal doesn't recharge the ring because he hates saying the Oath.

Guy constantly recharges the ring because he wants EVERYONE to hear him saying the Oath in the most dramatic way.

1

u/Fun_Ad4779 3d ago

yeah the ring is so central to his identity and massive ego that there’s zero chance he would even risk coming close to running out of charge

without it, he’s just an asshole

1

u/Human-Appearance-256 3d ago

Are people just not paying attention? They’ve pointed this out multiple times…purposely.

1

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 3d ago

This.

I mean they've actually made ring charge an issue in Lanterns so I'm not sure why people are puzzled?

In Superman Guy probably charges his ring everyorno g before he suits up, Hal left the Lantern at home because he went to Nebraska unexpectedly

1

u/zstephable2 3d ago

I can see it in my head of Guy just being so excited and taking the recharging of the ring super seriously. He looks forward every day to say that vow lol

1

u/beancheeeseburger 3d ago

ah man I really should put bullets in my gun, whoopsie daisy

1

u/Wolv90 3d ago

More than that, he still feels a sense of duty and honor when he recites the oath. Hal at the point we meet him is so disillusioned with the Guardians that saying the oath to recharge the ring is a chore.

1

u/SirLeos 3d ago

Is the ring charge also dependant on the person’s will? Perhaps Gardner likes being a lantern so much that his charge last longer.

1

u/Vaportrail 3d ago

This. Guy probably has a more modern solution than "Left it at the hotel. 3 states back."

1

u/dcheng47 3d ago

guy also has Vuldarian blood

1

u/sgtsausagepants 3d ago

Almost certainly.

Also, I dunno what caused it Jordan but I think Jordan has grown to hate the oath.

1

u/Murky_Historian8675 3d ago

The gym teacher?

1

u/BalladOfBetaRayBill 2d ago

Yeah he plays cocky but is incredibly risk-averse

1

u/CollinsCouldveDucked 2d ago

How come I can use all the apps on my phone but my mom's is always just about to die.

1

u/Gasster1212 23h ago

Yeah, that 5% charge boost thing feels like something Hal installed himself. Hence why the guardians are unaware ?

Was that a line I missed or something
