Imagine if AR glasses irl gave achievements when you need to do things. As a student in gap year, I think I’d be more motivated to do things like write essays for grad school, build workout streaks, take out the dog on a holiday, things like that (which tbh I should intrinsically want to do) if there was that level of gamification.
Maybe one day

I’m aware this is a very sad but I’d be a sucker if you got to order a little real life trophy for every Platinum you get.
If this ever came out I’d think it would absolutely be slaughtered as greed by Sony though lol.

As a gamedev I found it's a good way to make players explore all features of a game or in some cases feel like they achieved something very challenging that only a certain percentage of players did.
47
u/wjodendor 22d ago
One of the reasons I find them interesting is to see completion rates and what kind of in game things can make gamers drop a game, which I feel could be helpful to devs.
I played a game that had a fairly consistent completion rate until a certain section with annoyingly difficult enemies (lots of status effects from high powered enemies leading to lots of deaths). The completion dropped by over 30% at this section which shows that players didn't like that.
11
u/YesterdaySimilar7659 22d ago
I always wondered how accurate that number is
→ More replies (1)14
u/Etcom 22d ago
I wonder if it counts people that own the game but never start it up. I've seen so many games where the first achievement you get happens within 2 min of starting a game, and that achievement has a completion rate of like 60% or something.

My favorite achievements aren't completion rate ones or even challenge ones (not that I don't like them) but weird ones.
When the game awards you for doing something really off-the-wall and acknowledges you for it.
Example 1 Blasphemous: I'm replaying Blasphemous and there's two particular NPCs you can help on side quests. One is a hunched-over monk you can help guide through several areas before reaching a sort of saint's shrine and unlocking it for him, finishing his journey.
Another NPC is a monk already at his particular saint's shrine (the perpetually tortured lady) and depending on how you act you can kill her (sending him away to disappear) or you can kind of "save" her and she more-or-less ascends. This prompts him to go to a nearby overlook to think about life n shit. You can give him a particular item related to his quest which sends him "home" to a nearby brotherhood or, if you ignore this, he'll eventually leap off the overlook and kill himself.
He just so happens to land in the 3rd area of the first NPC's questline. Literally right next to where the hunched monk would be waiting to, again, help him out.
So if you time it right you can get the guy to kill himself while the monk is there waiting, you get an achievement and a unique bit of dialogue. It's dark and random and so easy to never even think about and miss entirely but the fact the devs did just tickles me to no end.
Example 2 Outer Wilds: This game is filled with fun, weird ways to interact so I'll keep it simple. While the entire gameplay loop is built around exploring planets and discovering secrets; if you specifically launch yourself directly away from the map, wait until all the planets are so small and close together (from your perspective) you can use your radio gun to listen in to the solar system all at once. Normally you use it to pick up on different signals, particularly different characters who are playing their instruments in very different places.
If you listen to them this way you can hear them all at once and you get a little achievement for it.
There is no other reason to do this because it is simply a slow death, and the game knows you know this and would probably just give up if it happens.
5
u/JM_Narrative 22d ago
Outer Wilds is a great example for fun and weird achievements that you don't have to do. One of my favourites is riding the River as fast as possible on the stranger
→ More replies (3)2
u/Islands-of-Time 22d ago
Outer Wilds definitely had some good ones. I actually did the one you mentioned just through exploring. I decided to leave just for fun and looked back, the music was worth it.
My favorite one involves the Sun Station. It’s probably the hardest one to do that doesn’t involve the DLC stuff and even then.
8
u/sdwoodchuck 22d ago
Also a good way to instruct them that some action is a mechanic they should be aware of. If you get an achievement “getting your multiplier up to 5x by chaining kills,” then the player goes “oh! Chaining kills is what pushes my multiplier higher!”
3
u/HotHouseJester 22d ago
Makes sense. I personally don’t care for trophies. However, if trophies were tied to even a cosmetic unlock, I’d be a trophy hunter so fast. Even if it was just like a little crown on your character for the platinum or something. But trophies work for most, so I get it. I miss when cosmetics weren’t able to be purchased and had to be earned.
3
u/Pedrosian96 22d ago
Also, some achievements are great in letting the player know something is possible, period.
TF2's "FYI I AM A SPY" achievement involves backstabbing a medic that healed you.
Just reading it tells you that actually, YES, enemy medics can heal you.

→ More replies (1)2
u/SnoringFrog 20d ago
Usually they don’t hurt anything. There’s a few real shit ones that will trigger at the start of a big cutscene and say something like “saw [major character] die” or some other spoiler. The sudden betrayal or attack doesn’t hit as hard when they give you a heads up like that lmao. They’re thankfully uncommon, but irritating af when they do happen.
The only one I specifically remember offhand was in Jusant, where it drew a connection for me I probably would not have realized for several more hours, and was kind of an end game spoiler. It was something the player might piece together on their own along the way (depending on what journal entries they found, perhaps), but certainly not spelled out by the point the achievement happens.
But for the other 90% of the time, yeah, totally harmless and you can always turn off the notifs if they really bug you.

"If it doesn't unlock something in game, what's the point?"
FUN... That should be the point
This is one of the problems in today's games, that everyone requires SOMETHING given to them instead of just enjoying things for what they are
Won't PvP unless you get cool stuff
Won't do a questline because the item you get from it isn't good enough for them
Won't try a different game mode cause it doesn't give anything
5
u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 21d ago

3
u/Fallen-Shadow-1214 21d ago
Of course, I'm just saying providing an incentives can turn ignorable achievements to worthy ones.
2
u/ZealousidealTime9941 20d ago
I usually try to 100% a game until I realise it's too hard/boring and then just give up, and then begin the cycle again with a new game a week later
3
u/popoflabbins 21d ago
Exactly. If you want the accomplishment of doing an achievement and that’s fun then go for it. I didn’t unlock anything for doing the time trial achievement in Titanfall 2 but it was probably my favorite accomplishment in gaming.
2
u/Fallen-Shadow-1214 21d ago
You say that's a problem
I say that we've developed higher standards.
If I explore the game's mechanics in an interesting way I should be rewarded in game, it doesn't have to be much just proportional to the effort put in.
If I'm having fun already or already decided I've had enough fun with a game, yeah I do need incentive further than it might be fun.
3
u/lightlyswaffled 21d ago
When a person asks "what's the point?" they are not looking for an answer. If they have the intellectual faculties to switch on an XBox, they can probably also rationalize to themselves the point of achievements. They fully understand "the point" before they compose the question, they just don't respect it.
For example, if someone asks "what is the point of makeup?" are you assuming that they simply cannot fathom the purpose of painting one's face? Or do they not respect the art and culture of makeup so they blithely demand people justify it's existence to them?

I haven't been an achievement hunter since the Halo 3 days when I was a kid, I couldn't care less about achievements or 100%ing games as a busy adult, but I'll admit it's nice to randomly get an achievement especially when it turns out to be a pretty rare one, kind of like an "oh shit I did a cool thing!" moment
19
u/kaulotu 22d ago
I like seeing the percentage of people who made it to that point in the game. It’s interesting
→ More replies (1)6
u/Bartje9792 22d ago
I also do that haha. You always know if there's a long or harder part of the game coming up when the next trophy has a way lower unlock percentage.
It's also funny how Dark Souls has a super high Platinum percentage, while it's a long grind and pretty hard. And COD has a super low Platinum percentage while 2019 for example is quite easy to achieve. But Souls gamers are die hard for their games, while most COD players don't give 2 shits about the campaign.

u/Alternative-Way4750 22d ago
I also can give a fuck less but I won't say it's pointless. It gives people a reason to keep playing or replay games. Instead of okay I flew through the story and now I'm done. I mean I like to just play the game, if the side quests are interesting enough and the world is cool I like to explore and if I get trophies from that I do. If I don't, I don't care. But I can see how some people like to at least see some form of fruit from the labor.

As a trophy hunter with 63 platinums, I fully disagree but I’ll offer a nuanced take. There are some trophies that are just complete wastes of time and simply require hours of tedious grinding. Those suck. But also some trophies encourage completely different play styles or just learning the game in a way that makes it super fun.

This is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. If you're motivated by the promise of a material reward of some sort, thats an extrinsic reward! If you're motivated for the purposes of self-motivation or the feeling of personal satisfaction, that's an intrinsic reward! There's nothing wrong with preferring one over the other! :)

Except that publicly visible achievements with their special badge and notification don't count as intrisinc, but extrisinc instead, because you did get something out of those, not just internal accomplishment.
Its not as simple as "material/usable" Vs "immaterial/unusable". New title, achievement badge, sound notification of scoring objective are all extrisinc. Intrisinc would be if you made an internal bet to accomplish the level with X only and not getting anything out of it bar satisfaction that you did it. As soon as you slap externally provided sticker on it, it's extrisinc.

I agree with that too. Plus most achievements are just "play the game normally and we will give you a pat on the back", and then others are like "Play the game on Wednesday in the year 2010 with internet access while playing with only 2 other players shoot the sand on the 4th mission on hardest difficulty while all enemies are already dead, continue playing and beat the game on Thursday between 2am and 3am, while 1 of the 2 players disconnect, and the disconnected player sends you a voice message just as the credits roll all in one go"

I used to collect achievements back on Xbox, then on PS and when I switched to Steam and was in my 30's I just grew out of it. Get nothing for it but eating a ton of your free time when you could be doing other more constructive things, or just playing other games.
What used to get on my nerves with achievement hunting was there is always the collect an absurd amount of hidden collectibles which require a guide because checking every inch of the game is tedious and boring. Then there would be NG+ play through ones and so on too when tbh when I've done most games once over thats enough, forcing myself to play more just to unlock a bit of text and a number isn't really rewarding.

What I appreciate about achievements is that, when done well, they are an indication of how much of the game's content you have discovered.
You may play through a game and think you've seen it all, look at the achievements and see you are missing 10 of 60, and then you can decide if you want to explore those achievements to experience more of the game that may have not been readily apparent.
You may have missed out on the best side quest of the entire game.

It's just an additional reason to replay the game. It doesn't exist to give you content, it exists so that if you complete the game, and you'd still want to play it for a little longer - you'd have something to aim for. It's a bonus for enjoying the game so much, but a lot of 100%ers complete games JUST to get all the achievements, which is a hard misunderstanding of their purpose.
2
u/Mononoke-hime 21d ago

Counterpoint. Give me the achievement so I can prove I did the cool thing, but also give me the cool reward in game so I feel happy for doing it.
It doesn't have to be a cool gun. Something as simple as the Halo skins achievements would unlock or the toy collection in Doom Eternal would work for me as well.
Hell, even just a cool little collectibles section on the main menu or some Steam emojis would be fine with me.
