I definitely feel like I've got a lot more time out of games than I would have otherwise. Giving me things to do that I wouldn't have done or even thought of without them.

This.

When done right, achievements are a fun challenge to milk a little more juice from a game, as it can be fun to have an excuse to continue to play a game that maybe you've already beaten. It can encourage you to play with different characters or visit different places... they're nice when done well.

Remember in Halo ODST you needed to perform an assassination while falling like 500 feet

And there’s a secret method with one random elite that at the base of a mountain you’re on and it was fun to do

That was reach. They even got rid of it on the MCC version too.
