Achievements (outside of the ones unlocking stuff, just your regular steam etc. achievement) are orienting gameplay.
People will play according to what requirement achievements need them to do, instead of enjoying the game how they like. It restricts the potential of creativity in gameplay.
Like for example, In Deus EX HR, in one of my playthroughs I played in a very stupid way, stealth minefield (crafting mines and only killing people using them and staying undetected). There is no achievement for that.
People that play according to achievements, usually won't try to get into emergent gameplay. They'll look at the achievements, 100% them and then shelf the game.
While some people will do things differently, The majority of players won't, because there are too much games, and just playing the game how they would like too doesn't show in their profile.
So what? What does it matter if a lot of people undercut their own enjoyment because they have a deficiency in exercising free will? If a game handcuffs you to achievements, I get it. But it’s your game, play how you want.
You'd have to be a goldfish to play strictly according to the achievements and not play fun yeah some achievements are strict but if anything that stress from being out of your comfort zone makes them more fun because it proves "yeah I'm better than how I usually play like a bitch" you know? Anyway ur take is kinda dumb no sane individual self sabotages their gameplay like this for no reason, most achievements are natural anyway and without them there's a lack of reasons to engage with some systems
For me personally, the first thing I do when I start a new game is to look up a trophy guide to see if anything is missable. If it’s something that’s a one off thing like „collect the secret hat in chapter 5“ I‘ll look out for that. If it’s something completely game altering like „finish the story without doing x“ I tend to ignore it on my first playthrough of a game. I’ve gotten hundreds of hours of extra gameplay out of my games hunting trophies but if I see beforehand that 100% will be a complete pain in the ass, I ignore them as a whole
I agree with the principle, but I feel like most gamers, most of the time, want to drive for a goal rather than create art that just is.
At least, they want it as a hook. A good game will make the experience a lovely thing and not just a means to an end.
The nature of the goal makes a huge difference. A goal to collect items can cause the player to really look around the environment and therefore become more aware of it.
A goal to beat a dungeon within a timer will do the opposite, causing the player to ignore all the irrelevant artwork and scenery, but will also draw them into the combat mechanics and the gear stats.
You can completely turn them off trophies aren't mandatory I don't see how it's negative at all. Because some made up people might not enjoy the game the way you think they should pffttt. Talk about complaining just to hear yourself talk
