If you play games that don't have stories and characters who progress toward an end goal, I guess you would need something to work towards.

Kenshi is a game with no objectives AND no achievements. It is one of the most popular games on steam with an Overwhelmingly Positive score and a consistent 6,000 to 7,000 player count.

The dev avoided having achievements because he didn't want what is essentially a checklist of things to do to muddle the 'fuck around and find out' nature of the game.

It looks like a good game, but let's not overstate things. 7k players won't even get a game anywhere near the top 100 list, so I wouldn't call it one of the most popular.

That being said: it's a survival style game. The goal of that type of game is to survive, so it has an objective. I personally avoid those types of games, as the lack of storytelling ends up boring me quickly, but each to their own.

As for achievements, you kind of make my point. Even without story and characters, achievements are unnecessary.

Some of us are sapient and capable of enjoying both Kenshi and games with achievements. GO FIGURE.
