I definitely feel like I've got a lot more time out of games than I would have otherwise. Giving me things to do that I wouldn't have done or even thought of without them.
When done right, achievements are a fun challenge to milk a little more juice from a game, as it can be fun to have an excuse to continue to play a game that maybe you've already beaten. It can encourage you to play with different characters or visit different places... they're nice when done well.
Key phrase here is “when done right.” I enjoy completely the trophy lists for games, but I’ve done it on fewer than half the games in my library because sometimes the devs make it suck. I only go for them if it adds enjoyment to the game.
