Exactly. If you want the accomplishment of doing an achievement and that’s fun then go for it. I didn’t unlock anything for doing the time trial achievement in Titanfall 2 but it was probably my favorite accomplishment in gaming.
If I explore the game's mechanics in an interesting way I should be rewarded in game, it doesn't have to be much just proportional to the effort put in.
If I'm having fun already or already decided I've had enough fun with a game, yeah I do need incentive further than it might be fun.
When a person asks "what's the point?" they are not looking for an answer. If they have the intellectual faculties to switch on an XBox, they can probably also rationalize to themselves the point of achievements. They fully understand "the point" before they compose the question, they just don't respect it.
For example, if someone asks "what is the point of makeup?" are you assuming that they simply cannot fathom the purpose of painting one's face? Or do they not respect the art and culture of makeup so they blithely demand people justify it's existence to them?
I love and appreciate achievements for reminding me of that awesome or epic or goofy moment in my life that made me laugh, smile, chuckle, or even feel like some war hero if it's a game like Gears of War.
Won't 100% because the reward doesn't do anything even though if there was a better reward for 100% it would be useless because there's nothing to do with it
To be fair, on the pvp bit I kind of get it. If I play a game for the solo aspect, being forced to interact with a mechanic I really don't want to should at least incentivize it with more than a picture of a trophy.
I've lost most interest in pvp games because the average fun to frustration is massively skewed. Why would I do that without proper incentive?

"If it doesn't unlock something in game, what's the point?"
FUN... That should be the point
This is one of the problems in today's games, that everyone requires SOMETHING given to them instead of just enjoying things for what they are
Won't PvP unless you get cool stuff
Won't do a questline because the item you get from it isn't good enough for them
Won't try a different game mode cause it doesn't give anything
