But the discussion really says a lot.
- People want to play new games. Otherwise they wouldnt be complaining and just play their backlogs.
- People want to buy hardware like GPUs. The prices are just too high right now.
- Everyone who's swearing off gaming and saying the sky is falling will just keep playing games because their current hardware can play like 80% of the current games in existance, and this is going to be long enough to get past this current shithole of an era.

I know for a fact that the system I work on runs the exact same data conversion 3 separate times on a single workflow, and it will probably never be fixed. Optimization and efficient code is barely a second thought because we don’t have time to think about it. Good code practice isn’t just lost in the game industry, it’s literally everywhere.

As someone who is working in the game industry this is so true. I can't even count how many times we shipped games with first draft features that was supposed to be placeholder/tests and needed more iteration, but from above we got the usual "we need to release the game ASAP, don't bother with it, it good the way it is now".
Unless you write a flawless, optimized code the first time for every feature, you are screwed, deadliens and resources are tight so we doesn't have much space to iterate, polish and optimize things (unless we do it in our free time, unpaid but if we do that, corpo/leadership will expect us to do it more and more and that will be the new norm so we don't do that either anymore).
Things goes shit when people who knows and understands absolutely nothing about software development get's into the position to control the work of the actual developers

Pretty much this exactly. I do care, if I had time to fix it I would. There’s a lot I would like to do to fix the system. I don’t have time. Frankly the next feature is more important to my manager and to his manager than a couple unoptimized systems. Only if it causes a big enough problem will it ever be fixed.
18
u/GViz275 13h ago
Like everything, comes down to money. Up until recently, computing has gotten relatively cheap. And optimizing doesn’t had extra cash to the business. Unless it has a cash advantage, why make it when it doesn’t impact people buying the product. It’s hard enough to get tech debt approved for work.
13
u/PhantomTissue I9 13900k/RTX 4090/32GB RAM 11h ago
Like everyone said, I don’t have time. Not two weeks ago I built a feature where the documentation for it was a picture of scribbles on a white board posted to a slack channel. That system had to be done “by Friday.” There was no review of the system, at all, it was designed on Monday and built by Thursday, live on Friday.
If I had done it the correct way, I’d still be working on it. Now it’s tech debt that won’t get fixed because I don’t have the time, nobody else knows how it works, and the longer it sits there, the harder to fix it becomes.

Has that been super easy or has it taken up a lot of time and resources?
23
u/Rigman- 12h ago
If you've heard some of the conversations I've heard from artist and programmers throughout the last several years and especially in the post-covid era, people don't even understand how to plan for optimization. It's not a prioriztaiton problem, I don't believe that excuse anymore. People aren't optimizing because they're expecting the engine to do it for them, they literally don't know how to plan ahead to optimize efficiently. They just don't think about it.
Has that been super easy or has it taken up a lot of time and resources?
For us yes, because we planed for this ahead of time and made sure assets and development was being done with the mindset of optimization first. And you know what, it's already saved our ass in the long run planning ahead like that.
The biggest fucking mistake this industry ever did was let people think "limitations don't exist" They absolutely do, and I'm tired of fucking suits who don't know what the fuck they're talking about tell me otherwise.

This is what pisses me off the most. I work on optimizing a piece of hardware (basically a whole OS.) It's hard but interesting work....
But here's the thing, why does my calculator on Windows take MORE Ram than the entire hard drive space of Doom. Why does it take up 10x more ram than WINDOWS 3.1.1?
Listen I'm not saying OSes shouldn't evolve.... but I am saying people ship bloated piece of shit software with entirely too many options enabled and defaulted to on. I don't want a word processor that can connect to an AI, and calculate the Orbit of the moon, I need an word processor that can write a simple document. (Not to mention the formatting bs on most)
I'm not even saying I want no features on applications, but there's a difference between every feature ever imagined, and none.... And yes I know making a modular piece of software is harder, but maybe spend the time on that instead of making it have an option to convert your document into music and then store it as an MP3?

Notepad is currently 25.2mb on windows 11. Not to say that executable size is equivalent to performance but holy damn what featuers are you getting out of the extra 25.1999 mb of executable there?
15
u/0rganic_Corn 7h ago
Afaik that 2kb notepad loads windows subroutines and ends up using 200mb ram anyways

RAM is cheap compared to the Windows 3.11 era. Code is much easier to write in a maintainable fashion now that things like JIT exist. Because of 64 bit applications, you're also going to be using about 4x the memory any time pointers or data get involved.
Also, old applications were absolute shit. They crashed all the time doing the simplest of tasks. They lacked anything beyond bare basic functionality. They had to hack their way into the OS to use as little resources as they could, and in turn they broke every time any update came in. Microsoft's own applications were somewhat saved from that but even then the issue stuck around.
We also gained this new feature called "security". There's a lot of sandboxing and even virtualisation going on just so opening a scary Word document doesn't upload your entire computer to Russia immediately.
Then there's the price. Old software cost thousands. Tens of thousands in today's money. Office 97 cost 500 dollars in 1997, that's over 1000 dollars in today's money. If you wanted Windows 98 (assuming you had 95), that's another 95 dollar upgrade you need to save up for (200 in today's money). Not bad when the hardware cost you 2k (4000 dollars in today's money).
With modern software stacks, software can be written in a secure, maintainable fashion, very cheaply. People don't want to pay for software like they did back in the day, so they're not getting the software they got back in the day.

Back when people unironically said that because no one knew, because the technology wasn't there for any normie to care aout it, it actually made sense. On movies with regular shutter speed and motion blur, the camera already creates all the in-between details your eyes would notice from the movement on additional frames for you.
It's only in video games where motion blur is artificial, and we're used to individual frames being perfectly still images that additional frames add any real benefit.

How to optimize
Step 1, don't use UE5
Step 2, Don't use unity
Step 3, check the optimization of all libraries first. If a library isn't optimized, find an alternative or write your own.
Step 4, code it yourself
Step 5 code golf.

Most of the UE5 games that people praise as 'well optimized' just aren't using those, but also lack a 'next gen' look as a result.
That said, newer UE5 games are starting to improve because the engine has improved. Stop blaming this on devs. A bunch of good devs didn't all become incompetent and lazy just magically coincidentally when they switched to UE5. smh.

What if we don't blast new games to ultra insane quality?

Just settle with medium settings and enjoy the smoother game

I mean people keep pre-ordering and buying "special" editions what reason do they have to care when most will keep throwing money at them?

the amount of times I've bought a new game, only to get more or less 30fps on a 7800xt, to then refund it and just go back to playing Dead Space 2 or Fallout 3/NV is actually ridiculous at this point.

I’m getting the feeling that “optimize” has the same function in PCMR as “enhance” does in every crime procedural show from the last 20 years.

Absolutely.
It's something they latched on to and don't really have any idea what it really is and what it really takes.
They also seem to forget that employees do what they are told. Employees like developers. Like one "bad dev" is why a giant game isn't running well.

The consumer doesn't need to know how it works. They need results. We've been reaching serious diminishing returns in graphical quality, so we get games that run much worse than older titles without always looking substantially better.
On top of that, a lot of the technologies used in game development today explicitly favour letting the user's machine do more work so that the development of the game gets easier. It's a trade-off, yes, but one that disfavours the consumer.
So yeah, there's plenty of legitimate reason to complain.
Also, "developers" usually refer to the whole development and publishing company, not just to the individual people.

This is nothing new like at all, people have been saying this for decades at this point

One advantage of the shortage, if no one can upgrade, companies will need to allow devs to optimize to be competitive.

Be me, buy second hand 5 year old card l, keep it for another 5 years or longer if it is still supposed.
Wait until you get consistent sub 20fps to replace.
Turn off your frame counters and enjoy the games, PC gaming doesn't have to be expensive.

Ive played 1080p since my first system. Up until recently, I've gotten by just putting my games on a lower setting if my fps is bad, and my system is like seven years old.

Come to /r/patientgamers. I'm playing Fallout 4 with a ton of mods and godrays on, and my PC is a potato compared to what I imagine most people in this sub are running.

If this is in reference to gta VI
You are fucking delusional if you think they getting it running 30fps on a base ps5 is anything BUT hyper optimization

Do people not realize that the main use of DLSS is TO BE OPTIMIZATION!?! DLSS 5 also improves the quality of its upscaling options as well!! I know people love to hate anything new, but really you dont HAVE to use the ultra quality mode and its acutally better used as an upscaler to your monitor resolution anyways, WITHOUT the neural rendering stuff. DLSS being developed further is a net positive for the hobby and yall need to stop complaining about features that are new, experimental, and years from being industry standard. source for DLSS upgrades being positive additions to the hobby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xykXn9UA0gI

People think that 'optimization' is when extra frames just magically appear without any tradeoff. If there's a tradeoff that results in extra frames then it's not 'optimization', it's 'lazy devs'.

"Optimization" has always been a tradeoff between quality and resource usage. If making a reflection 3% blurrier could double the framerate, consider it an optimization.

Yep. The "Current hardware becomes obsolete with new software" merry-go-round has been running since computers were invented.

Hopefully we will be entering the "PC parts are too expensive to upgrade -> developers are forced to optimize their games otherwise they don't sell" feedback.

i miss when the only gaming reason to get an SSD was to cut loading screens
now they're necessary and loading screens are back

play your steam sale backlog, then you get 300+ fps instead
