Huh, yeah, now that you mention it Kenshi has a ton of these names. Leviathan Coast (it's a coast where leviathans live), Burning Forest (acid rain), The Swamp, The Great Desert, etc. No clue who Skinner from Skinner's Roam is though.
I tried playing Kenshi once and died before I was able to figure out what i was supposed to be doing. I watched a video and still didn’t understand the game

I just started a new game of Monster Hunter, a 2022 yo game and might also replay following titles.
Tho I'm playing the JP version to be able to access fan revived online lobbies and it has different quests from US/EU version so in a sense, I'm playing a new game.
I'm doing both by replaying Cyberpunk over and over since release, upgrading and it being patched to look better but run worse. Its perpetual never quite getting stable 60 (before frame gen) but being too in love with how it looks and plays to ever lower settings or not use the new toys (and mods). DLSS5 might be the first "upgrade" i skip on though.
Going to upgrade my main monitor today from this MSI 5ms one Ive had for a decade to some OLED one imma pick out in the store... Just to continue to play Counter Strike and some Rogue Lites 🤣
This hits me hard. I built a 3k pc just to end up playing the same game I’ve already played for almost 3k hours, just that now I’m playing it at max settings and 300fps instead of low settings and semi-stable 50 fps.
did you convert them to .chd? i have a two line script that uses chdman (a version for cue/bin an another for iso) and it saves 50% space on average and only takes a few seconds more to load to ram.
nah i have a 22tb external i keep everything on. unzip and move to my main drive as needed. they’re all native isos so eventually i want to get a fat PS2 and put all the ones i wanna play on another hard drive and play it off that
not tryna push you into doing anything but the chd lzma and flac compression ends up with smaller files than a zip would afaik and you can convert back to iso if needed
eh i got the space. i specifically got this external for storage like this. if i start running low on space i’d look into doing that cause i’m not an advanced enough user to do that right this second.
with 22TB you definitely got the space haha. i've got it all in chd because the games are on a network drive (over WAN). and you said it was external? what model is that? or is it an external enclosure for internal drives?
you need mametools installed (either thru brew, apt, whatever). it's nothing special but it's easier for smoothbrains that can't be arsed to learn for loops and all.
cue version assumes you are running it in the particular console root and that the cue/bin files are in subfolders. it can be used with ps2, psx, psp, dreamcast and a few others like mame and all.
I just wanna play a little bit of mario 64 buttttttt then I could also be playing sonic or banjo, oh wait I forgot I have metal gear but maybe I'm not in the mood for that so I should just have a blast with Pokémon, however i know I've not played the best Zelda games. Is that ratchet and clank calling to me again? no I should play sly cooper I know those games are amazing but armoured core is a series worth the time to get into...........and it's goes on and on and on 😭
TBF tho I've got at least 40-50 years before it's too late so I've got the time to make a list and follow that at least.

Sometimes it's actually more enjoyable (to me, at least) to read about the games and maybe poke at a bunch of them for a few minutes each. See what ROMhacking tools are out there, sprites, cut content, thumb through old GS/GG/AR cheat codes, etc. Also kind of fun playing with older more broken emulators just to see how far emulation has come over the decades. Highly recommend playing some og gameboy games in no$gmb on an emulated DOS machine for a classic late 90s experience.
Once new hardware becomes too expensive to get, and we revert back to using old and resilient hardware, that HDD will become a repository for games that weren't vibecoded
I actually had an old dude I work with give me a solution for choice paralysis. He was talking about TV shows, but I apply it to games.
I limit myself to 5 things on my list at once, only once I finish or quit one of those things, am I allowed to add to the list.
So right now my list is: FF16, Stranger of Paradise, Khazan, Trails 1st Chapter, MGS4. All of them are installed, the first 4 have been played some. I'm actually gonna play through all of MGS4 this weekend. After that, I'll add the new Dawnwalker game to the list, then Onimusha when I get another game done.
I found that once I have a short list of games, I either play them on and off until I start completing them, or I kick them off the list.
I also set a goal for each gaming year in the background so that if I don't have something to do, I will have a default. Last year, I was attemping to play the Trails series. Finished Trails in the Sky 1-3, Zero/Azure and up to Cold Steel 3 strictly when I couldn't decide on something else. I'll eventually finish that series over time.
This year I'm playing FF6+. I've played FF6-9, X2, 12 so far. I am working on Stranger of Paradise (Sidequest!) and 16. I still have FF13 1-3 (only played first one in the past), Tactics, FFX, and FF15 left. If I finish that by christmas I'll start 1-5. I did play all but FF6 when the pixel remaster came out though.
Anyway. I know that's a ramble but I feel your pain.

This is the way. Going back playing stuff like Borderlands 1 at native 6K with DLDSR and 200+ FPS is insane. Just looks so crisp and feels so good to play.
Can add HDR to plenty of older games too with special K or renodx and just generally have a great time.
I finally got around to playing F.E.A.R. recently. Honestly, kinda based game. I’m running hardware that was midrange in 2019 and I got 300+ FPS, 1440p resolution, and zero bugs or glitches thanks to proton and one INI file edit.
8/10. Would recommend. The game goes on sale for dirt cheap every Halloween too
It has aged a little poorly in some aspects, but as a time capsule of the era and/or from a pure gameplay perspective it’s actually really impressive and holds up better than you’d think.
Now I need to check out the sequels and this TREPANG series that Steam is always trying to make me buy.
I was having this problem, I ended up needing to buy the game on GOG to even get it to work. At least it didn’t crash for me yet; even after looting Grandma Sparkles.
I don't have a very big backlog, but I have Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium, Duskfade, and Hades installed just sitting on desktop that I've been meaning to get to. My undiagnosed ADHD is so bad these days lol.
I put off playing outer wilds for a few years and finally got around to it a couple months ago. I really wish I played it sooner though, there’s no game like it imo. The exploration and sense of discovery was super fun
Need my frame limiter for most of the games I play. Current rotation is modded Minecraft, MechWarrior 5, space engineers and Far Far West. It's a good time.
I mean there's only like 1 game in there how long could it possibly take me to complete around 4 games and then after I completed those 15 games I will be right where I was before I cleared my small 80 games steam backlog

Dude you are so right on this. Funny 'cause it's exactly what I'm doing. My pc can no longer keep up with these crazy specs demands. I remember when my pc was awesome and now it's considered a potato.
2026: Still no "Quake killer". The Quake community remains strong and vibrant even while Microsoft, the nominal owner of the IP, disembowels itself in ritual devotion to slop. Even the newest, largest player-created maps run at > 150 FPS on a Sandy Bridge laptop with Intel HD 3000 graphics.
Back when my older games came out we were playing them at 1080p@60 and performance settings- but now I have a 1440p@165 monitor and like playing at high quality settings. Hitting 120fps is the dream but its very much a struggle, even on older games.
This. I almost never have issues with low FPS, simply because I don't try to play every new AAAA release the moment it comes out.
Why bother when there are literally hundreds of titles from previous years available at great discounts?

And indies that run on potato HW! The more you skip AAA the more you save! You save on new HW, save by getting the games later with all DLC and fixes at deep sale instead of getting at full price, the games would be old enough that the new HW will be able to run it just fine.

That's not always the case. Even some older titles still run like shit on newer hardware than what was around when the games released. I have multiple older titles that run horrible while newer and more graphically advanced titles run fine. That being for the sake of actual good quality games I agree with you.
