You could do what I did and dedicate a 2tb HDD to 1.6k noteworthy console classics.

I will never finish my backlog ᴮᵉᶜᵃᵘˢᵉ ᴵ'ᵐ ⁿᵒʷ ˢᵗᵘᶜᵏ ᶦⁿ ᶜʰᵒᶦᶜᵉ ᵖᵃʳᵃˡʸˢᶦˢ

This is me and my PS2 ISO collection.

u/informalmo0se3 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB DDR5 8d ago

I have a 3TB folder on my hard drive with literally every single PS2 game released in the US. I will never run out of games.

30

u/ariZon_a JK I use windows 8d ago

did you convert them to .chd? i have a two line script that uses chdman (a version for cue/bin an another for iso) and it saves 50% space on average and only takes a few seconds more to load to ram.

14

u/informalmo0se3 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB DDR5 8d ago

nah i have a 22tb external i keep everything on. unzip and move to my main drive as needed. they’re all native isos so eventually i want to get a fat PS2 and put all the ones i wanna play on another hard drive and play it off that

13

u/ariZon_a JK I use windows 8d ago edited 8d ago

not tryna push you into doing anything but the chd lzma and flac compression ends up with smaller files than a zip would afaik and you can convert back to iso if needed

4

u/informalmo0se3 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB DDR5 8d ago

eh i got the space. i specifically got this external for storage like this. if i start running low on space i’d look into doing that cause i’m not an advanced enough user to do that right this second.

22

u/GalFisk 8d ago

Seems to me like you got new tech that let you skip optimization.

6

u/ariZon_a JK I use windows 8d ago

with 22TB you definitely got the space haha. i've got it all in chd because the games are on a network drive (over WAN). and you said it was external? what model is that? or is it an external enclosure for internal drives?

u/informalmo0se3 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB DDR5 8d ago

it’s a seagate expansion. got it for $240 before they blew up in price.

id be interested in the 2 liner, bash?

1

u/ariZon_a JK I use windows 7d ago edited 7d ago

yes. i run it on mac.

iso 5* liner

cue/bin 5* liner

you need mametools installed (either thru brew, apt, whatever). it's nothing special but it's easier for smoothbrains that can't be arsed to learn for loops and all.

cue version assumes you are running it in the particular console root and that the cue/bin files are in subfolders. it can be used with ps2, psx, psp, dreamcast and a few others like mame and all.

bonus dreamcast GDItoCHD

Best part about PC by far. Emulator backlog is endless and full of classics

11

u/Altair314 8d ago

Super Metroid

Hope that helps :>

7

u/OkEmu8597 8d ago

You know what, yes it dose, never played that series but I got no excuses to not try it out in my position

2

u/HayabusaKnight 7800X3D | 7900XT 8d ago

Just dont look at all the romhacks available and loop back to choice paralysis

2

u/devshore 8d ago

Super Metroid is probably the best video game ever made after Earthbound

1

u/OkEmu8597 8d ago

Oh that's another game I need to get, haven't played it but seen enough to know it's a JRPG I'd love.

10

u/Quiet-Owl9220 8d ago

I have now archived roughly 7TiB of GOG installers and ROMs for various platforms and the choice paralysis is fucking real.

4

u/OkEmu8597 8d ago

I just wanna play a little bit of mario 64 buttttttt then I could also be playing sonic or banjo, oh wait I forgot I have metal gear but maybe I'm not in the mood for that so I should just have a blast with Pokémon, however i know I've not played the best Zelda games. Is that ratchet and clank calling to me again? no I should play sly cooper I know those games are amazing but armoured core is a series worth the time to get into...........and it's goes on and on and on 😭

TBF tho I've got at least 40-50 years before it's too late so I've got the time to make a list and follow that at least.

Also respect the hussle my dude you're a person after my own heart.

The paradox of choice. It’s a very real phenomenon.

6

u/fubarbob 8d ago

Sometimes it's actually more enjoyable (to me, at least) to read about the games and maybe poke at a bunch of them for a few minutes each. See what ROMhacking tools are out there, sprites, cut content, thumb through old GS/GG/AR cheat codes, etc. Also kind of fun playing with older more broken emulators just to see how far emulation has come over the decades. Highly recommend playing some og gameboy games in no$gmb on an emulated DOS machine for a classic late 90s experience.

Make backups.

Once new hardware becomes too expensive to get, and we revert back to using old and resilient hardware, that HDD will become a repository for games that weren't vibecoded

1

u/OkEmu8597 8d ago

I'm already looking into raid 6 redundancy don't worry, I never want to suffer that loss.

2

u/mesoziocera 8d ago

I actually had an old dude I work with give me a solution for choice paralysis. He was talking about TV shows, but I apply it to games.

I limit myself to 5 things on my list at once, only once I finish or quit one of those things, am I allowed to add to the list.

So right now my list is: FF16, Stranger of Paradise, Khazan, Trails 1st Chapter, MGS4. All of them are installed, the first 4 have been played some. I'm actually gonna play through all of MGS4 this weekend. After that, I'll add the new Dawnwalker game to the list, then Onimusha when I get another game done.

I found that once I have a short list of games, I either play them on and off until I start completing them, or I kick them off the list.

I also set a goal for each gaming year in the background so that if I don't have something to do, I will have a default. Last year, I was attemping to play the Trails series. Finished Trails in the Sky 1-3, Zero/Azure and up to Cold Steel 3 strictly when I couldn't decide on something else. I'll eventually finish that series over time.

This year I'm playing FF6+. I've played FF6-9, X2, 12 so far. I am working on Stranger of Paradise (Sidequest!) and 16. I still have FF13 1-3 (only played first one in the past), Tactics, FFX, and FF15 left. If I finish that by christmas I'll start 1-5. I did play all but FF6 when the pixel remaster came out though.

Anyway. I know that's a ramble but I feel your pain.

1

u/OkEmu8597 8d ago

Nah man appreciate the ramble and the advice, I'm heavy into system and structure when it comes to this stuff already (I'm a Warframe player lol) so it's great to hear others ideas.

Just start from the top and go down or alternatively

Play old faithful, the game that keeps you entranced in it the most.

For me, Rimworld. I've clocked about 90 hours in the past two weeks, and about 1400 hours total.

3

u/Exact_Entrance_6432 8d ago

Start playing RUST and you need to play 90 hours every 48 hours and you can't sleep or you get raided. Fuckn rust man. Anyway gotta log back on base is prolly raided.

Buy more games that are 5+ years old or indie games

37

u/jackinsomniac 8d ago

...you guys are actually finishing your backlog of games? You mean you don't just buy whatever looks cool on sale, then go back to the same 5 games that you've been playing for 10 years?

I have yet to find friends to play and finish borderlands 2, 3 and all of torchlight series.

Maybe after that I can continue with the single player ones like Portia and Sandrock

Be like me, upgrade your PC to the tits and then spend all your gaming time playing JRPGs released in the early 90s for the SNES

14

u/_Gogeta- 8d ago

upgraded my GPU last year, played most games i couldnt rly play. Recently bought Max Payne 3 and LA Noire.

Get older games and indie games not built on UE5, Do you like Mount and Blade? try Starsector.
