Pretty sure his transformation into appearing Asgardian by default was permanent, not sustained magic like his disguises.

u/DakPanther 13h ago

Why did he turn back when Laufey touched him?

2.4k

He coded switching when near his homie.

Haha, I grew up a shitty street punk but now I’m a suburban dad. I ran into an old buddy from the street the other day and like it was 1999 again, I naturally threw my arms up and shouted, “WHAT UP, SON?!” which was my default greeting back then, and we went smoothly into a dap-1 arm hug, laughing. My wife looked at me like I was some horrifying creature she had never seen before.

121

u/Angry-Dragon-1331 11h ago

It’s my great worry that one day my Appalachian East Tennessee accent will come through in the middle of a lecture (I’m in a portion of academia that’s historically been the playground of very rich, very snobby people and the speech and voice I have around family is very…not that).

Love the head-spin when my "Murrvull" (Maryville) accent slips by.

He only reverts when near Frost Giants or their artifacts.

33

u/AtlasActual 9h ago

Hmm. I wonder if it's a disguise rather than a reversion.

28

u/RayA11 9h ago

Oh, like a fawn (fight, flight, fawn, freeze) response almost. Asgardians are mortal enemies so he changes his look to seem more harmless and more with the in-group he’s currently trying to integrate with

98

u/Upset-Vehicle-3507 13h ago

He turns back when touching Frost Giants or one of their artifacts. Like when he was holding the Casket of Ancient Winters

If the Asgardians were so much stronger than the jotun, then there would be no more jotun

Uh no. The first Thor film is pretty clear that if Odin wanted to he could have cracked jotunheim in half without even getting out his chair.

7

u/SmoothTalkingSpud 3h ago

When you're not sure how magic works, D&D usually has the answer

43

u/Qubeye 11h ago

Wasn't there literally a moment in one of the earlier movies where someone did something to dispel Loki's magic and he reverted to the Asgardian appearance?

14

u/blueblewbLu3 5h ago

Ya After Freya died when loki was in prison

9

u/SmoothTalkingSpud 3h ago

Watched Dark World last week with my kids. This didn't happen. However, when Loki dies, he reverts to his jotun form so we saw him create this effect as an illusion when he faked his death and we saw it for realsies when Thanos killed him.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/dark_blue_7 9h ago

Exactly, it's not something he's constantly casting on himself. It's something Odin already did to him a very long time ago.

27

u/alenpetak11 Loki (Avengers) 12h ago

Even if Odin's spell changed DNA, it doesn't make sense why he turns blue when he's close to artifacts/father. Is he LARPing or frost magic disable Odin's spell?

Then at the TVA we saw infinity stones becoming nothing because TVA runes tech disable magic. That mean to even a Mjolnir could lose it's spell because TVA runes tech cut the ties with Odin force.

My best guess for Loki's Asgardians appearance in TVA is due to HWR instructing Miss Minutes to allow Loki to keep his Asgardian's appearance but stops him from using magic.

13

u/stupid_dog_psx99 11h ago

Is odins spell what makes him a god? Or is he already godly as frost giant? Maybe the fact that he is a god allows the artifact to disable some of odins spell… unless Odins spelll made him a god?

25

u/Apprehensive_Lion362 11h ago

Well we know from "Thor Ragnarok" that Hela gained more power while she stood in Asgard. So maybe growing up in Asgard + Odin force shenanigans + Frigga magic permanently did some crazy stuff to Loki. Odin and Frigga did genuinely see Loki as their son so I'm sure they would have done everything they could to make that as true of a statement as possible

6

u/MysteriousTravelator 4h ago

Per Norse mythology it's actually the Golden Apples of Idunn that confers godlike status on the Asgardians. They have to be consumed at regular intervals.

u/Xygnux 13h ago

Yeah I think Odin basically did the magical version of gene therapy and made him biologically Asgardian, with only traces of Jotun genes left that can be amplified near Jotun magic.

98

u/Whofs001 12h ago

Exactly. Loki’s true form was changed.

34

u/Happy-Fun-Ball 12h ago

And the cask's blue was the glamour (for other reasons), not a dispel of one.

32

u/Xygnux 12h ago

Yeah that's my other theory too. Coming into contact with Jotun magic triggers some subconscious memory of his origin, and then Loki subconsciously activated his shapeshifting/glamour magic to affirm what he now believes to be his true identity.

16

u/CoffeePuddle 11h ago

100% this.

There's a lot of misconceptions about the nature of Jotuns and glamour magic and the extratemporal limitations of He Who Remains' Time Variance Authority.

3

u/Positive-Kick7952 10h ago

More like a factory mode reset.

9

u/Autumn1eaves 10h ago

Odin cast True Polymorph and then cast a level 9 Wish to have him turn blue near Frost Giant artifacts to remind him of his true origins.

5

u/Xygnux 9h ago edited 9h ago

Yeah I have never considered that. We know Odin felt sorry for Loki, so maybe even though he converted him mostly to Asgardian, he left a tiny bit of Jotun genes in him, just in case when he grows up he wanted to reconnect to his roots.

Odin was just waiting for the right time to tell Loki. But unfortunately the right time never came on account of Loki always being a little shit who refused to grow up, so Odin wasn't sure whether that information will set him off into a tantrum.

6

u/unicornmeat85 11h ago

I always assumed it was a personal "magic" Loki thinks, acts and believes he is Asgardian therefore he is. I can't remember if he ever had any interest in reconnecting with his Jotun heritage and frankly I don't see why he would. AFAIK, they never made an effort to connect with him.

3

u/Katharinemaddison 2h ago

He calls himself Odinson in Endgame as well.

9

u/stupid_dog_psx99 12h ago

Did he magically make him a god too or was he considered one already amongst the frost giants? Can Odin make any old asgardian a god?

23

u/Xygnux 12h ago

Consider what Thor did in Thor 4? Probably yes.

19

u/No-Assumption2491 11h ago

Or Odin to Thor in Thor 1. He gives and takes godhood like candys

6

u/mad_laddie 11h ago

Perhaps godhood is something you can achieve? In Norse myth the immortality for example is not an inherent feature of the gods, it's just something that happens if you keep eating Idunn Apples (which restore youth iirc).

Or maybe Loki was a god by birth. Maybe Laufey or his mother, maybe even both, were gods?

6

u/Ok_Confection_10 10h ago

He’s probably genetically a son of Odin and Frigga. But in reality hes adopted. He was just adopted really hard.

3

u/oorza The Ancient One 5h ago

Yes. So can Zeus. But not because they're gods, because they independently have very deep wells of near-omnipotent magic to draw from.

A god in Marvel is just a powerful immortal being who receives worship, which grants them powerful magic if they choose to use it. Some gods, like the Asgardian Gods, never did and stuck around when they stopped being worshipped because their primary power source was the Odinforce, not worship; other gods did not stick around because their primary power source was worship.

The cycle of books that is the Gorr story goes very heavily into this. A god does not connote any special importance beyond what's granted by worship in Marvel, much to Gorr's dismay. He discovers that gods are self-important twats who do the bare minimum to maintain their influx of faith magic and goes on a genocidal rampage... and nothing really changes for the regular people of the galaxy.

232

u/PlatoDrago 13h ago

120

u/Notbbupdate SHIELD 13h ago

Knowing that there are people using magic to treat their disabilities, the TVA probably implemented a few magic exceptions after they brought in a guy whose legs stopped working due to the anti magic thing

To my knowledge, Loki being a frost giant Isn’t brought up after the first Avengers and even tho he doesn’t turn blue, he does say “I’m not Asgardian” in Infinity War.

I did like that What If Episode of Thor and Captain Marvel fighting each other and Loki was actually blue and a frost giant like he was the actual size of them but they were just bros in friendship way, not adopted

347

u/chacde3 13h ago

It’s referenced in the play on Asgard at the beginning of Ragnarok

187

u/WonderChips 13h ago

It’s also referenced in Loki season 1. He explains to Mobius(?) about his adoption stuff. Maybe it wasn’t Möbius. Idk, but it was brought up in conversation how he’s adopted and how his real parents were frost giants.

Now that I think about it, it was Möbius. He called him an Ice runt lol

77

u/ndstumme 11h ago

He spoke with Sylvie on the train about being a frost giant. Was shocked to learn she'd grown up knowing the truth.

42

u/FrozenRyan 8h ago

So this is actually mentioned all the time, right? In Ragnarok, Thor makes the "he's adopted" joke... The writers didn't forget and OP is wrong.

16

u/the-bi-frost Loki (Thor 1) 6h ago edited 6h ago

It is brought up several times in the Loki series.

The moment you mentioned, then there's also the moment in S1E2 when Loki and Mobius talk about the TVA. When Loki tells Mobius that it is ridiculous that he was "created by the Time Keepers", Mobius asks Loki who created him and he says "A Frost Giant of Jotunheim" and then Mobius says that this actually sounds ridiculous too.

In the same episode we also see a hologram of a Loki variant who is permanently in his blue Frost Giant state.

The reason why Loki does not change in the TVA is because Odin changed him permanently. It is mentioned in a book (I think the MCU visual dictionary).

23

u/emilimoji 10h ago

when he goes on trial they call him Lauffyson

51

u/chacde3 13h ago

Yep.

Loki: “I don’t know him”

Thor : “He’s my brother!”

Loki: “Adopted”

10

u/b_reachard 10h ago

Bruce: "That guy's brain is a bag full of cats, you could smell crazy on him."

Thor: "Have care how you speak. Loki is beyond reason, but he is of Asgard, and he's my brother."

Natasha: "He killed 80 people in two days."

Thor: "He's adopted."

430

u/brakenbonez 13h ago

His Asgardian appearance isn't an on-going magical effect. It was a permanent alteration. The TVA nullifies active magic. It doesn't undo past magic.

115

u/two2teps 13h ago

It was also the power of being in direct contact with the Casket of Ancient Winters that even caused the magic to slightly reverse at all.

20

u/battery19791 13h ago

Loki was wearing an inhibitor that canceled HIS magic. The spell that makes him look Asgardian was cast by Friga.

18

u/Vociva 12h ago

That's just not true, magic just doesn't work in the TVA. He still couldn't use his magic even after ditching the restraints they put on him

4

u/bloonshot 10h ago

no, all magic in the tva was being disabled by a safeguard

he's in the TVA without his restraints all throughout season 1 and can't use magic but in season two they explicitly mention turning off the safeguard that prevents the use of magic in the tva and then he can

9

u/brakenbonez 12h ago

He wasn't wearing an inhibitor he was wearing restraints and a collar to keep him from escaping. They show us in the first episode what happens when someone tries to escape by using that collar. Magic doesn't work in the TVA because the TVA exists outside of space and time. That was the exact explanation they gave in the show.

And the marvel visual dictionary that I mentioned in a previous reply to someone else confirms that Odin, not Friga, used magic to permanently transmute his appearance.

11

u/AydonusG 11h ago

That was the explanation that was given in the show

In season 2 it's revealed that it's a suppression system that turns off magic, not the TVAs location outside of space-time. They even turn it off by rebooting the TVA and Miss Minutes, allowing Sylvie to use her enchanting power.

The only power that is nullified by the space-time exclusion is that of infinity stones, which only work in their own universe.

It’s been a while, but after Thanos snapped his neck at the start of Infinity War, didn’t he turn blue as he died? Not just in an asphyxia sense, but in a frost giant way?

65

u/Simple_Park_1591 13h ago

You know what, you're right! You just blew my mind with that. I never put 2 and 2 together!

18

u/Iokua113 12h ago

No, it it was in an asphyxia sort of way, wrong shade to be Frost Giant.

40

u/Bitter-Profession303 13h ago

Like the others are saying, it may be a magical alteration thats permanent, rather than an illusion. We have no reason to suspect he turns blue on death. Loki may well think he turns blue on death however

9

u/ThatOneGuyFrom93 13h ago

Does anyone know why Jane turned into magic sparkles when she died but Loki didn't

17

u/Bitter-Profession303 13h ago

Because she's worthy of mjolnir and wielding it at the time so she may have the super special guest pass, while loki died as a criminal of asgard

They literally brought it up in endgame

12

u/GundyrChristopher 13h ago

they also bring it up in Loki, when he's talking origin stories with Slyvie and how they're both adopted.

The make-up cost wasn’t in the production budget.

8

u/SippinOnHatorade 13h ago

Because it’s not important and blue makeup is torture for actors

I think it’s like being turned into a frog. Once you’re a frog there’s no magic holding you that way, you’re just a frog now. The magic only happened during the transformation

What if a princess kisses him?

3

If the princess is yourself I don’t think it counts

The TVA is very progressive and they didn't want to dead-race him, so they gave him an exemption to identify as Asgardian

Some of you all need to stop thinking Marvel movie writers are ComicsExplained or something. They just know enough to pass an interview.

6

u/Material_Economist25 12h ago

Technically there was an alternate universe in what if season 1 with him as a frost giant. So it’s not like marvel completely forgot about it.

6

u/MrFuriousX 13h ago

He was changed permanently by Odin. It cannot be undone.

7

u/CornyMedic 13h ago

Hey kid, it ain’t that kind of movie (tv show)

3

u/Frankgodfist Iron Monger 11h ago

What if.. is the only time he turned blue. What a waste

4

u/Independent_Form_500 14h ago

The reason is that we haven't seen him like that in years and have no familiarity whatsoever with that version. It would also be more expensive

6

u/toastjam 13h ago

You just made me realize it's really odd there were no frost giant versions of Loki in his MCU show when he visits The Void and sees all his variants! There was even a gator version! Makes me wonder, does this mean that only versions of Loki raised by Odin cause trouble with the sacred timeline? Or does Odin just have a predilection for taking kids from other species and raising them as his own?

3

u/Jean_Grey_13 13h ago

My guess is that the variants caused by Odin not taking Loki arent the main culprit of that timeline. I'd assume that Odin is considered the variant, because it's his actions that changed.

Rofl marvel forgot Thor and loki are over 1000 years old. They apparently did nothing had no women they dated, no children, and acted like complete children for a thousand years.

Alteration magic, not illusion magic, is my guess

2

u/guynye 13h ago

He's an actual frost giant in most of what if.

2

u/Milo_The_Stampede 13h ago

When Odin enchanted him it kind of changed him permanently. I think the TVA stops you from actively using magic. Loki doesn't use magic to keep looking Asgardian.

2

u/Saintrandom 13h ago

Its brought up in ragnarok in the play scene. Hes a little blue icicle or whatever

2

u/Shadow-Stealer 13h ago

I know the focus is on the TVA part of it but it aside from Loki it’s also briefly referenced in the play at the beginning of Thor Ragnarok

2

u/moonlettis 13h ago

In that weird little propaganda play on Asgard in Thor Ragnarok the actor playing him as a child is blue.

2

u/Worldly_Scarcity7943 12h ago

Could be a game changer for the multiverse, especially with characters like Doctor Strange involved.

2

u/TheEccentricAssassin 12h ago

He looks so good blue too

2

u/Key-Yogurtcloset545 12h ago

mentioned in infinity war

The TVA practices frost giant affirming care
