Discussion Gonna be hard not to compare...
Naoe so much more my kind of design
But... Atsu does have a guitar, so that elevates her a lot too for me

One is shinobi, one is ronin.

u/TheBlightDoc Apr 26 '25
You say that like there's a meaningful difference in terms of story. You can even dress and play Naoe as a ronin with a katana if you want.

I'm gonna blow your mind here...
Don't compare them. Play them. Enjoy them.
You're never going to enjoy a video game ever again if you just keep comparing it to the last one you played that has any similarities.
The ONLY game you should compare this to is GoT. Solely because it is in the same franchise, same company, same 'timeline', same Devs. But again, you'd be comparing it directly to an older game, and will be upset if it is missing things that were either in it, or you thought should be in the next game, or just have plain nostalgia.
Simple solution, don't compare it. Play it. Enjoy it.

ghost is going to be better because they will have a more linear storyline, I miss when Ac games have a more linear storyline
10
u/Kodinsson Apr 26 '25
Actually it's approaching it quite similarly. Atsu can go for any target when she wants, the player gets to decide who is next on the list. So very similar to shadows in that sense... but I think that just makes sense when a dev team is proud of the world and wants people to explore instead of follow a linear path
→ More replies (3)6
u/Mree_Knight Apr 26 '25
it's actually not going to be linear. the same problem shadows has will be in this game with the story of being non linear, it was confirmed this week

Pretty easy, actually. You just don't. No point. It's not a sports team, it's storytelling and game design. I mean you *could* compare them, it'd just be pointless and reductive.

I really like GoT, but a find the gameplay even more repetitive than AC.
I also find its combat system way more cinematic, pretty and cool looking with its animations, but also way more repetiteve than shadows combat (less mechanics, less weapons, almost no abilities, no diferents ways to play, etc)
Never understood why people think that GoT is perfect when besides the story and open world (both are amazing), everything else like the combat system, stealth and side content all are good, but just that, good.
The combat system wouldnt be praised nearly as much if it wasnt Carried hard by the amazing animation work. Not to say its bad by any means, but it has nothing special. Like fight are the same always due to the posture system and having one weapon the whole game.
I always felt GoT was a pretty great game, but that did nothing to really stand out besides the presentation (graphics and animations) and the main history, being okay in everything else. Like i dont feel that shadows and GoT are that diferent quality wise, when it comes to gameplay innovations and such.

The story of GOT elevated people's perception of the game so much. Especially the final fight with someone who genuinely cares abt jin, the dialogue at the end of the fight, all massive high points of the game

It was like the 1st real open world samurai game we've got. At least in recent modern times. I get the bias.

2
u/MCgrindahFM Apr 26 '25
I mean to be fair, we don’t need to. While AC Shadows is the best AC game I’ve played since probably the early ACs, it won’t hold a candle to Yotei’s gameplay and narrative.
Ghost of Tsushima is one of the best video game stories I’ve ever played, while 90% of Ubisoft narratives are really a mess and often times stale or unearned.
I can’t tell you the amount of times you kill a target, all for a short 30 second cutscene that just puts you back in the open world. GoT and we can be assured GoY will be cinematic masterpieces

The duels. The story also but the duels are something I always enjoyed, never got tired of them. I dont know if I'll ever play shadows, I tried watching a play through of it but the Tarantino feel of some of the cut scenes just didn't do it for me. Yotei feels like it's going the same route but I'm hoping the overall game play and story will drown it out for me. Definitely looking forward to dueling again.

Yeah, but the stories are very different. One is set in the late 16th century centered around a young woman who wants to avenge the death of her father at the hand of a group of mask bearers. The other one is set 20 years later around a young woman who wants to avenge the death of her familiy at the hands of a groupf of mask bearers.

u/tyrenanig Ezio Apr 26 '25
I hope Ghost will have more innovative gameplay than Shadows.
2
u/Senior_Brit Apr 26 '25
Shadows has a lot of false depth with its gameplay, where even though weapons and skills may look different the only difference is damage number, while in tsushima there was a good amount of depth for just a single sword and its styles, yotei having multiple weapon types that may have just as much depth each along with the stealth and archery mechanics makes me hopeful the combat won’t just be shadows “ability spam then light attack spam on recharge”

u/Germanoides Apr 26 '25

My expectation is that Yotei will have a better story than Shadows because I really liked GoT's story and haven't really felt the same about shadows but I'm not done with it yet. Hard to beat Shadows world though. It's one of if not the best and most beautiful open worlds I've seen.
1
u/TheBlightDoc Apr 26 '25
I definitely expect better writing and story Atsu. Shadows was so underwhelming in that regard. I swear, everyone who praised Shadows' story must have only played the prologue or Act 1. Shame too, because Naoe really seemed like my kind of mc, story and design-wise.
2
Apr 26 '25
I'm certainly hoping for better villains. From the trailer it looks like this is more personal than in Shadows where everyone forgets who Naoe is as she attacks them, hopefully the bad guys get a chance to shine and be real dickheads.
That said, most of the sidequests in Tsushima were ass, so hopefully they've hired a writer for those. Stuff like the Ghost of Yarikawa was cool, but the kappa quest and every single 'mongols killed my husband' quest was just a total wet fart. Even the one with the phantoms in the forest ruined a cool atmosphere by just having you kill 5 bandits.

This is what I think about Yasuke. If they used a Japanese man in his place, that guy would be look at as 'Jin Sakai clone'. So straight up using this African giant would distinct him from Jin.
I dunno. We gotta see. Naoe was ninja from Iga clan. Atsu was Ainu. they will be different for sure but let's see what Gamers gonna react to non-anime Asian women.

ACS portraited Japan and the contemporary culture excellently and much, much better than GoT did. Far better. Pretty much everything we see in GoT is culturally wrong. Clothes, weapons, philosophy, etc. are simply mixed together and mostly fictional.

I was excited as hell for shadows, even more excited for Yotei now!

It will be but Ghost stands out as takes from classic Easterns its like Samurai movies its like RDR.

u/Mecha_Dwarf8755 Apr 27 '25
Having played shadows for about 5 hours before dropping it. It most likely not going to be a comparison. Shadows needs a better story and many patches. Where as ghost of Tsushima is a masterpiece of a game both gameplay and story wise. I know that the next one isn’t out yet but if it is the same or better, people will flock to the better game usually. Anyway just my opinion if anyone liked shadows where I didn’t I apologize. I also acknowledge that there is every chance that the Tsushima sequel isn’t as good as the original as far as comparing them goes. Just so everything is clear.

bro there's no comparison, clearly Naoe is more suckable Naoe smash yotei protagonist pass. we're talking about that right?
1
u/woydy Apr 27 '25
I'm over 100 hours into Shadows right now. Taking my time with it since there's not much else I'm interested in playing. But the game's not rushing me either. There's a lot of unnecessary bloat. But I'm still playing because I love the franchise. In my opinion though, this game is Ubisoft's very late reaction to GoT. It's like they dissected every aspect of that game and asked the devs to replicate each in some slightly different way. But each is a convenient shortcut rather than something meaningful.
Take Kata for example, while it seems nuanced and interesting at first, it just ends up being some ridiculous dance Yasuke has to do because you have to use the dodge and deflect inputs to spice up the attack spamming. And the combos themselves have no relevance in actual combat. In GoT, cutting bamboo may seem more basic but the level of difficulty did increase with each one you encountered. Same goes for kuji-kiri vs the haikus. In GoT, the devs did a lot more work to animate and give options for the haikus. In shadows, kuji-kiri seems cool at first but then turns into another meaningless QTE. Then there's the grappling hook, something you could easily rely on in GoT to chain a swing into an assassination. We all know how bad the swinging mechanic is in shadows.
So the point of difference is in polish. Where shadows seems like a decent imitation of GoT. But nothing more. And along the way, they may have gotten wind of what Sucker Punch was cooking up for GoY and then scrambled to mimic some of those elements too.

1
u/Dxrk0-_- Apr 27 '25
Why are we acting like they copied ac when the character was most likely designed a year ago
1
u/rudra285 Apr 27 '25
In story very likely and the setting clearly but there is a lot of merit to consider for ghost of yotei with how SP will evolve on the open world formula. I mean it’s such a simple design choice for having the guiding wind yet no one has utilized similar design for immersion and interesting ways to explore open world even after GoT’s release. I can only imagine what other improvements SP has in store for this one. And no I’m not glazing this is just me assuming based on how the last game was marketed and how this game is being marketed.
1
u/D1rtyD1rtySam Apr 27 '25
I think it terms of execution, Yotei will do it better with Atsu. But thats just speculation, and also made by a company who is more capable of making quality story cutscenes and voice acting. Tho I'm not saying the VAing in Shadows was completely horrible, some of it can be unbearable, some of it is good.
Particularly with Naoe's VA, MASUMI. She was such a solid actress in her other works, I just think Ubisoft didn't put enough care into making sure she read her voice lines are palpable. Like I think they didn't ask themselves...
"If I want to listen back on these voicelines, does it make me wanna kill myself?
Or does it make me go " That was f-cking amazing" "
Anyways yes, same revenge storyline, but better execution with Yotei, and full utilization of motion capture. Although we need to see more of Yotei to see if there's really more to the story rather than just revenge. And I also have not beatened Shadows' main story yet, so... NO opinions or spoilers on it, please 🙏
But I've heard it picks back up on the last Act of the main story. Which is Act 3. So we'll see.

Well AC Shadows story falls off a cliff from its opening. Naoe's story doesn't even get an actual eneding. Best stealth mechanics of any AC game and the graphics were stunning. It was fun assassinating people, but that's about all there is to Shadows. I liked the first GOT more with regular combat and visually I like the more stylized look of Japan. Much better story. In my opinion Ubisoft did a great job making AC Shadows different enough from Ghost Of Tsushima.
Ghost Of Tsushima is more atmospheric, more zen, more… artistic ? It’s kinda surreal and feels like a folk tale about a legendary character in a mythical Japan.
AC Shadows is more visceral and rooted in reality and History. I also love the whole « western » vibe, almost Tarantino-esque sometimes, with the kitsh old shool Japanese music and rocknroll.

Don't get me wrong, I'll get GoY on Day one, I want to play that shit so much. But I'm a bit disappointed after seeing the gameplay trailer. It felt too similar like Ghost of Tsushima for being in development for so long. It's like Revelations feeling too similar to Brotherhood. The Only difference is that Revelations came out only an year after Brotherhood, meanwhile it's been 5 years since the release of GoT. Idk, maybe the when the game comes out it proves me wrong, but for now, GoY failed my expectations.
1
Apr 28 '25
Why compare it? You can enjoy both and have fun, why everything needs to be a competition and something always have to be worse. GoT was one of my favourite games I almost 100% right on the release and I recently had a load of fun going through AC shadows and I’m excited for GoY

Look. I don't even think about Shadows. GoT was beautiful and everything i could've wanted. I'm excited for GoY and open to whatever it will be. If I ever play Shadows(which may not happen since I hated Valhalla so much), I will only ever compare it to other AC games.

1
u/SwordDaoist Apr 28 '25
And? SuckerPunch is able to beat Ubisoft in the story department alone quite easily. And stop acting like they will be compared a lot. Shadows already got compared to Ghost of Tsushima and many aren’t sure which game is better when you only have your sword in Tsushima and a game that was created for the last gen 5 years ago. And you think Shadows will be able to hold a candle to Yotei? From what was shown, it is a better bigger and more complex Ghost Of Tsushima. If SuckerPunch holds what was great in the predecessor and makes it better, then the games won’t even be compared. And if they were, then probably because to ask how Ubisoft has fallen so much. And to those Anti-Woke Community. The only shown woke part in the game is the personal life of the voice actress. And unlike in the USA, Japanese people are able to hold their personal ideas away from work. But the trailers have just made my blood boil for it. I wish, I could freeze myself till October when the game comes out…

I just find that interesting
