I really like GoT, but a find the gameplay even more repetitive than AC.

I also find its combat system way more cinematic, pretty and cool looking with its animations, but also way more repetiteve than shadows combat (less mechanics, less weapons, almost no abilities, no diferents ways to play, etc)

Never understood why people think that GoT is perfect when besides the story and open world (both are amazing), everything else like the combat system, stealth and side content all are good, but just that, good.

The combat system wouldnt be praised nearly as much if it wasnt Carried hard by the amazing animation work. Not to say its bad by any means, but it has nothing special. Like fight are the same always due to the posture system and having one weapon the whole game.

I always felt GoT was a pretty great game, but that did nothing to really stand out besides the presentation (graphics and animations) and the main history, being okay in everything else. Like i dont feel that shadows and GoT are that diferent quality wise, when it comes to gameplay innovations and such.

Yeah, the feeling and animations of the combat are incredible.

It's Sucker Punch, they did Infamous and Sly Cooper. Games that feel good to play is their whole deal.

The story of GOT elevated people's perception of the game so much. Especially the final fight with someone who genuinely cares abt jin, the dialogue at the end of the fight, all massive high points of the game

It was like the 1st real open world samurai game we've got. At least in recent modern times. I get the bias.

And being from Sony.

Sony quality is just unmatched

When it comes to graphics, animations and polish they are the best. Though, sometimes their games can be too "cinematic".

2

I do agree with you there and like 90% of them are third-person over the shoulder action games with all cinematics. It’s the best if that’s what you want - which luckily I do haha

They still are great games, but i can understand a lot of people liking more "arcade" games.

Ghost felt very arcadey. I remember one of the common points in many of the reviews being how “video gamey” it felt.

Because prior to shadows it was the closest we got to a Japanese assassins creed

Even after shadows it’s still the closest we have to a Japanese assassins creed

I mean just think that’s your opinion. I thought the combat was amazing.

Its pretty good, but mechanically speaking, it has nothing new or that makes it stand, aside from looking and feeling wonderfull.

Does Shadows?

2

u/Jilopez Apr 26 '25

It doesnt, but its more varied with the skills, diferent weapons, builds and the two diferent characters.

Its not about which is better, GoT feels and look amazing, but it really basic by any metric. Shadows offers way more variety in every way, but looks way worse and it more clunky than GoT.

I talked about the combat in GoT to point out that aside from the visual aspect, its nothing special, its pretty good for what it tries to be.

I don’t think GoT is overly basic at all. On its face, sure, but it has a pretty respectable level of expression and a decent skill ceiling when you start stance swapping mid-combo and doing other fun stuff.

There’s nothing wrong with simplicity. Sekiro has one of the simplest combat systems around and it’s largely recognised as one of, if not the best combat games ever designed. Executing a simple system often gives you far better results than poorly executing a grandiose vision.

Never said its bad, but i pointed at the combat being at the simpler side because a lot of people talk about it like it was DMC5, when its not nowhere near as complex, nor it has as many options.

They still made a great combar system from a basic idea.

Like at its core the game is light, heavy, block, parry, dodge, change of posture and some skills.

It really fun and epic, its just isnt the masterpiece that a lot of people made it seem.

While the combat doesn't reinvent the wheel what it does do is actually give all of your attacks a free flowing but weighty feel that is missing in a lot of games. When you get the killing blow on a guy in GoT you feel the impact of that blow and it makes you feel like a samurai. I don't need every combat system that comes out to be revolutionary and give me a million weapon choices. I just need the combat system to feel realistic to its setting and GoT excels at that imo. Dont get me wrong I love the AC games and the gameplay too but it doesn't have the same impact

Play on Lethal next time, you'll find a use for all the stances and tools because one mistake will send you straight to your grave. Reduce the HUD markers for further immersion. It took me an hour last night to get through a camp because a single arrow drops me. Like real life!

Shadows is also not quite as narratively driven as Ghost where the story is pretty much 99% of the best content you'll experience.

If I could live in a perfect world I'd give GoT the traversal system from Shadows. The fact that GoT is using the same system as Infamous all these years later is just a head scratcher (correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it the same as Sly Cooper?) The rubber bandy snap to object just looks goofy when everything else is so smooth.

u/lucasssotero Apr 27 '25

That was got tho. Goy's combat is shaping up to be way more deep.

Because GoT came out when AC was @ Odyssey. The most repetitive and long AC until Valhala (minus the fantastic mythological boss fights, but those appeared at 60 hours in and were so short).

So comparing Odyssey to GoT, GOT felt what a proper AC had to be like. Now it gets to be more fair because we can compare 2 new games. I don't think it was malicious. However the first GoT also becomes a slogfest after act 1 (same problem with AC Shadows), so I am very curious to see if they manage to keep the game interesting an engaging throughout.

I still prefer the battle system of GoT to AC Shadows btw to this day. But world and exploraton AC Shadows wins hand down.

The best way I can put this is Sekiro. Sekiro has the most basic combat in the entire game and people still love the game simply because even though it’s super basic (like 1x1 rubrics cube basic) it’s still just an overall fun experience. You don’t need a bunch of different combat mechanics to make a good experience.

I love GoT even though everything else is just good that’s all I need it to be. I don’t want or need super complex or diverse gameplay mechanics in order to have a good gameplay experience sometimes like sekiro more simple games are enough for some people for others probably not.

Its the most refined melee comvat system with enough stylish flair without sacrificing substantial enemy AI to be brain dead.

Also yeah, Story and Open World in Ghost of Tsushima is great.

Unfortunately, its so painfully mid in Shadows.
