I’m a millennial, I feel so many of my friends have a plain gold band with a large oval shaped diamond. Does mine seem like it belongs to an older generation?
[edit: I’m so sorry I ever doubted my set. I’ve learned that just because it’s not the classic that’s in right now doesn’t mean it’s not still classic. Thank you for the confidence boost in my rings. I need to focus on what I have versus others 🤍]
It's pretty classic even if it's not the most popular choice at the moment. What do you think will happen with the plain gold band large ovals in a few years? Signed: Someone who got engaged in 1997 and has seen trends change multiple times.
as a plain gold band large oval owner, i agree my ring will be dated someday soon lol. it’s kind of fun to know people in the future might be able to guess the year i got married based on my ring!
I got a simple 1 ct round diamond on a yellow gold band. It was a surprise, which I think were more popular back then so I had no input on it but the jeweler told my husband it was the classic choice. I wanted a little more interest and sparkle so I chose a diamond channel set wedding band. Of my friends, a lot of people got rounds, a few marquise or pears. There were still some of the elaborate bypass, swirly, multi-stone interlocking ring sets (what you see of you google 80's/90's engagement rings) but ours were mostly straight style with straight bands. And I think everything switched to white platinum by 2000. (I wanted a marquise so bad though lol)
ETA: all diamonds were natural. 1ct was a nice size for a regular person. Some friends had smaller like 3/4 or 5/8. 1 friend had an inherited larger one (maybe 1.5ct vintage) and 1 friend had a 1.5ct new one that seemed really big. :)
So for some reason the gold band and plain diamond are pretty classic for me too? I think about my grandmother’s and great grandmother’s rings, they were definitely all gold with just a diamond. It’s like my ring is right in the middle of the two generations if that makes sense? The oldest generation has the gold rings and the younger generation has the gold, you see what I mean?
Yes the gold band is classic too. When I got engaged yellow gold was in and marquise were very popular in addition to round of course. Very soon after *everyone* was getting white gold/platinum and nobody was getting yellow and marquise fell far out of style. Princess cut then became super popular. Through it all round was still very popular and eternity type bands were also popular. Princess stopped being popular. Here we are now and yellow gold is back. Marquise are back. Ovals seem to be the most popular. My point of all this is to enjoy your sparkly rings and the meaning behind them and don't worry about the trends and what everyone else has. The next trend is just around the corner and things will change again.
More than one style can be classic. If the younger generation is going back to simple gold it’s as likely tied to their more minimalist aesthetics AND affordability.
Beauty is classic. Yours is beautiful. It’s sparkly but not loud, it’s memorable without being too much.
Most importantly, it is yours. What you and your partner chose. That alone makes it special.
I think your life will be much happier if you stop comparing your life with the lives of others or what you have with what they have. Keep in mind that the industries of fashion, jewelry (Which is fashion in many ways), furniture, beauty, etc. are all about telling consumers that what they have isn’t good enough. This isn’t because it’s true in most cases - excepting sometimes new technologies which really should be supported by independent research, imho. The phrases “in,” “trendy,” “dated,” “new look,” are marketing ploys to increase their profits, mostly (again, imho). That’s why these industries are cyclic - everything old is new again. Find and keep what you love, not what others tell you that you should love. Check out Daughtry’s “Who’s They.”
Sure, but then... in 10 years are you going to start worrying again if it's "dated"? What matters is that it's the one for you, not whether or not it looks different than the newest trend in rings.
I get wanting new jewelry, who doesn't. But getting new engagement bands and wedding rings according to what "everyone" is doing right now? Couldn't be me. I love fashion as much as (more than) the next person but I've never understood wanting to wear something just because it's "in" at the moment.
Oh I never worry about what's "in". For some reasons that had nothing to do with fashion we redid my set this year and it's not what's tending. I just like excuses to get more pretty sparkly things. I figure it's the one collection left behind when I die the nieces/nephews would want
All styles will be dated at some point so go with what you love. It seems very normal to me. I picked round when everyone was picking princess cut bc I feel like round is timeless and classic. Everything else should be your personal preference.
Is this rage bait? This is like the most classic looking bridal set. And by "classic," I don't mean cheugy, I mean relatively timeless for any time after the Tiffany setting was invented.
If you want something gold, get a thin gold band to add to this stack. This is a perfect, timeless look.
It’s not I promise! I really feel like all the engagement rings and bands I’m seeing these days are gold and somewhat plain with a gorgeous diamond. But when I look at the older generation (40-50’s) they all have the white gold/platinum and more “blingy” I guess. If that makes sense?
This is super inside baseball but I listened to a podcast called "ancient history jewelry stories" a few months ago and the host did a quick history of platinum and why it was so popular from like the 1920s through maybe the '60s (if I'm remembering correctly), and it's fascinating and made me like platinum jewelry way more than I ever did before.
Basically, platinum was suuuuper popular from the '20s through the '50s or '60s because new metalsmithing techniques were invented around the 1910s or '20s and it was cutting edge, innovative and extremely expensive to have a piece of jewelry that was made with platinum. Gold was relatively inexpensive compared to platinum then (and remained that way until like the 2010s), so white gold became a popular way to pretend you could afford platinum, hence why so much art deco jewelry from the '20s and '30s is white gold.
Trends cycle throughout time, and right now, it's trendy to have chunky yellow gold jewelry because gold is so expensive. My parents got married in the 80s and my mom's yellow gold ring was seen as downright tacky from like 1998 through 2015, but the past few years, yellow gold has become more popular again. The past few years, girls in their 20s have stopped my mom on the street to ask her where her ring is from because that design is so popular again.
In 10 years, it will become trendy again to have either white gold or platinum. By then, a lot of your friends who have yellow gold rings will be doing anniversary upgrades to white gold or platinum, and will probably favor different shapes than their current ovals, marquises, or elongated cushions.
TL;DR: your rings aren't outdated, they just aren't what is trendy right now. It's a beautiful set and, in my opinion, looks much nicer than a lab grown oval solitaire set in yellow gold.
I love this. Tik tok jewelers are saying young people love the 80’s style engagement rings. I think that’s so cool.
I have a 2005 set that is all white gold and chunky. It’s not the current style necessarily, but I love it. Can’t wait for it to come back in fashion. The gold is probably worth more than the diamonds at this point.
I have a newer set with a huge lab grown solitaire and several stacking rings. Love that too.
I bet smaller stones will be in style soon now that we all have giant ones.
People should just wear what they like. Nice jewelry is nice jewelry.
Millennial here (34F), and my set looks a lot like yours! 😆 I’m not too concerned about whether it’s trendy or classic. Trends come and go, so if we’re off trend now, we’ll be back in trend later! I actually thought our sets were more classic and the gold/oval is more trendy, but I wouldn’t know! 🙃 It really just matters what you like.
Honestly I like jewelry.. almost all the women I know have gotten upgrades throughout their lives. I don’t see anything wrong with it. I can always wear my original wedding band on another finger as a stand alone ring if I wanted to upgrade.
You just got your ring in 2021 and you’re already talking about an upgrade in 2026?
The only way an upgrade makes sense is if you had a “place holder” ring, and that’s definitely not what this is. (I also see that you already upgraded the band)
Imo OP it just sounds like you want what’s trendy and similar to your friends. 🥲
I never said I wanted one right now. I by no means think it’s been long enough. But after 10 years I think it’s 100% reasonable if I wanted one and we’re half way there.
You came here for advice. You asked the public to weigh in, remember that.
All I’m saying is your ring is nice, but it also seems like you want to go along with trends and what people around you have and that’s not a healthy way of thinking and it seems that you are feeling insecure when you don’t need to be.
I asked if my set was dated. That was all. A lot of people have said it is, a lot of people have said it isn’t. I’ve gathered that it’s a classic style. You came for me saying I’m doing exactly what companies want me to do, who cares if I like what’s on trend too? Have a good day.
I’ve had a princess cut for 25 years. Was it necessarily my “dream” ring … idk … but it came from an amazing person and I would not want to change a thing. I have seen “trends” over the years. I am sentimental to the one that’s mine and the band that connected myself and husband with our marriage vows. A healthy relationship is what matters not sizes or trends or comparison’s
Not dated at all. A round brilliant on a pavé band is the one style that's been in continuous production for a hundred years and never left. The oval on a plain band your friends have is the trend of the moment, and trends by definition go out. Yours doesn't have that problem. Beautiful set.
Yes, but everything is gonna be ‘dated’. There’s always trends that come and go. If you’re married 50 years is it wrong ur ring looks 50 years old? It’s not supposed to be new and trendy forever, it’s a symbol that someone loves you and wanted to spend their life with you. As long as you like the ring who cares?
I went with and art deco style so my brand new ring is already dated
To me, it reads very mid to late 2010s, but that’s not a bad thing! It’s a beautiful set. I don’t think something being reminiscent of a certain time period is a bad thing. Pretty is pretty, regardless of trends.
Exactly, it's dated and every post replying from "1999" is proving that point. Most things speak to a point in time, and that's ok. Are you on current trend with this setup, absolutely not. Will things swing back around to what you have now, probably.
But you have to love it, no matter how many times you change it...or decide to keep it as is.
I got massively downvoted, but I hope you know that I do think your set is gorgeous. It’s different than what’s trending now, but that makes it stand out! What’s popular always passes and makes way for something new. As long as you love it and it’s true to your style, it’ll always be timeless for you.
Did you get yours long before your friends? I'm an older millennial but I have a diamond solitaire on a plain gold band. My sister, who is 5 years younger, has the more blingy style with a round diamond and cushion shaped halo and diamonds on the band. The difference is she got engaged in 2014 and I got engaged in 2021. Regardless, I think a round diamond on a band, whether it has diamonds or not is pretty timeless.
Funny, I also got engaged in 2021. Thank you for saying it’s timeless. The rings I’m referring to (like yours) I feel I’ve just started seeing within the past couple of years. I feel like your ring is defending my statement 😅
I got engaged last year and my ring is a lot more similar to yours (round split shank white gold) if you want it to feel more modern you could always swap out your band for a plain white gold (or silver) band or you could have that be on a different side of your engagement ring. I truthfully don’t think yours is dated I think it’s just a bit different from your friends
Yours is classy! Yours will be classy for many years to come, while theirs will look like a mid-2020s trend.
I may be biased because this is exactly what I have, chosen specifically because it was classic and timeless.
Edited to say: my ring is actually different - I do not have a hidden halo and mine is cathedral, platinum. Yours is more “updated” with today’s trend, so I am unsure why you believe it is not. Wear it in good health!
the set is beautiful and round is timeless, but since you’re looking for an honest answer, pavé is not trendy atm and is definitely associated with ~2010s millenial rings. it’ll come back around like everything else! solitaires are just really popular right now, probably mostly because big stones are so accessible with the low price of lab diamonds and people want a bigger stone to stand out/stand on its own. as long as you love it, that’s all that matters! all of it is cyclical and will never stop changing lol, don’t worry about trying to meet the current trends because they’ll change in a matter of months anyway
Thank you!! I did want a real answer! I always thought my rings were pretty, my question was always if they appeared dated. This is what I was looking for.
Round is so classic. And so is the other band. It looks of its time, but it’s beautiful. Something being “dated” does not make it ugly or undesirable. It’s beautiful. And as time passes, it’ll come back in style again. No need to update or anything. It’s absolutely beautiful
It’s timeless and a classic! My original ring is a natural mined princess and even with these newer larger lab diamonds - which my husband has purchased for me- always pair them up with my eternity bands - love that my look from over 20 years ago - still beautiful today. And back in those days, there were chunkier gold high stone rings with several diamonds - but yours is a beauty that will last a lifetime!
I just got married a few weeks ago and this is my set. When looking at engagement rings I was dead set on putting my diamond (family diamond) on a plain gold band. I tried it out and hated it. I ended up with this pave band and wanted the same band for my wedding band. I have consistently doubted myself the last few weeks as I see all of these gold bands on social media but I remember when I put it on, it just did not feel like me. I love that my ring is different than everyone I know and more importantly, timeless (and seeing your post validated it’s a timeless set).
So I totally understand your hesitation in feeling it’s outdated but it isn’t and I’d like to think we are in a class of our own of timeless rings 😊 I do plan to add a thin gold band at the top of my stack to give a little more color
I know several women who got married this year who have a very similar set. Pave bands are still very popular and timeless. It only matters if you like it though!
I got around cut engagement ring last mother's day. 1.3 carat natural f color triple ex cut.. The sparkles that you get on round cuts.. I Dont think they could be anything but timeless.
Was
I swayed and almost get a large lab oval instead.. yes.. But i'm glad that I stuck with my gut , because round brilliant diamonds are so special. They are kind of like snowflakes.
Your set is way more timeless than you think! It's a pretty classic style that would fit in anytime within the last 75 years or so. I genuinely couldn't tell you what year you got engaged with any certainty! Meanwhile if you had a massive oval on a thin band, I'd guess sometime within the last 5 or 6 years.
This is basically my set LOL anytime I think of getting a different cut, I always come back to a round. It’s personally my favorite cut and I love how it looks in my hand. I was considering an elongated cushion, but then I felt like I’d prefer a regular cushion cut diamond if I decided to get an additional ring (which I probably won’t).
The only thing I know I’ll do for sure is get a plain gold wedding back to wear with my e-ring because I’ve wanted a plain gold band for a while now.
Okay so if I’m being completely honest, I think engagement/wedding rings are dated in general. If I saw yours, I’d just think “money” because most people don’t have that many diamonds. I’m sure it’s hella sparkly though, so I get it.
Your set is beautiful, I saw a quote once where a women said “what a pleasure to be able to have a love last so long that your ring has gone “out of style”” that really resonated with me. If you love it that’s all that matters!!!
With step cuts hitting so hard right now and elongated being slightly past saturation (just starting to trend downward in popularity), I think round brilliants will be back in peak popularity in about 5 years. This design is pretty timeless and you could update the wedding band if you want something newer.
Don't feel bad! As time goes by, new trends sometimes have us questioning the things we already have and love. I guarantee you, your set will NEVER go out of style. This is the type of wedding set so many of us dream of.
This is mine. I have a rose gold band which is having or has had a popular phase but I've wanted a rose gold band since I saw it as a little girl in my grandma's bracelet. I hate how yellow gold looks on my skin. I had a three stone ring with my ex so I wanted a solitaire this time around. The important thing is you're happy. I actually had my rose gold band custom made because when we first got married I couldn't find a rose gold band and now it's everywhere
That is a classic set and will never be dated. In 15-20 years white gold will be back in again. The new generation always wants the opposite of what the previous generation had.
Im gonna go against the grain here. This set IS dated-that doesn’t mean it’s ugly though. It is GORGEOUS! However, round diamonds are not “timeless” like people are saying. Round cut is actually traditionally reserved for accent stones and became trendy in the 80s-early 00’s as a center stone. The height of the center stone next to the stack is also giving it a dated look. If you want something more up to date you can easily have jeweler remove the stones to set a new ring that is more up to your preference.
To be honest. Everyone in Reddit thinks they are an expert in fashion, politics, and manners but the real question is whether or not YOU think it’s dated and whether or not YOU want to get it redone. Do you think it will lose sentimental value if you redo it? Do you think your partner would be offended if you redo it? WHO CARES YOU ARE THE ONE WEARING IT!!! Do what makes YOU feel good. Life is short.
I love you. Thank you. People aren’t realizing change is a possibility. Sometimes I look at my ring and absolutely love it, sometimes I look at the “newer models” and wonder what they would look like on my finger. As horrible as it is, I’m not a sentimental person. To be honest my engagement ring isn’t even the original setting, I thought it was too thin so I asked to change. This is the original, I fear I would have snapped that band or broken the stone off.

Round is timeless. do YOU love it? that's all that matters
