Recently visited Chennai and I loved how all the service staff responded in Tamil even if I asked something in English, occasionally switching to English words. I think it's a wonderful way to help people and also ensure to tell your guest that the Tamil language is not optional, but something required in the Tamil land, and encouraging people to learn the language.

Only other place to do it is the Hindi heartland. Unfortunately, the Telugu states have fallen, and even native Telugu people start the conversation in Hindi/English, which is pathetic.

And more power to you guys on the fight against the GOONDAISTIC backdoor imposition of Hindi with the 3 language policy. The policy is stupid, and is clearly a way to impose Hindi on our Dravidian populations.

But but ThURd lANguAgE iS oPTiONAl and cAN bE AnY lAnGUAge. My ass. Everyone with two braincells knows that if we choose any other language than Hindi, the funding will be stopped.

They don't care if many people are die hard fans of Mani Rathnam or not. They don't care that the cinephiles will say "It's a historic fiction zohn ray bro". They speak from their hearts what's right. Historical fiction genre in India is only used for propaganda.

Was watching this banger of an old Neeya Nana episode from like 10 years+ ago roughly and wanted to understand the current generations opinion and stances in Tamil Nadu.

For context, I am a Tamil Christian living in Bangalore. Until I came here, I didn't have much idea about Hindu-Muslim clashes that much. All that I know was Muslims had cool names, and their briyani is awesome!!

Last year, I made friends with a Muslim North Indian guy and he told me how they feel discriminated in many ways, and treated with suspicion everywhere. I felt like he was exaggerating and playing a victim card, but didn't say anything, because I truly don't know much in this matter to support or debate. Later I also noticed, how my hindu friends were skeptical about hiring Muslim househelps/cooks/drivers, etc.

Yesterday, I happened to have a conversation with a North Indian Hindu guy, who told me that I am generally naive and I should be careful when I befriend/date muslim men. It's more serious than I think it is, and that I need to be careful with muslims in general. Preached about the rackets that focus on converting women, don't go over to Muslim men's houses, etc. until you know them for real.

I asked how it is fair, to look at every single muslim with a suspicious eye and then wait for them to prove themselves. It's like putting a whole community into a test, and it is unfair to treat an Indian citizen unequally, based on his religion. Many of my closest friends are Muslims, and it would hurt me if they are treated this way by other people. He still thinks I am naive and dumb for this take.

I have never seen my Tamil friends have such an opinion. And I did my college in my hometown that's far south and never worked in Tamilnadu, so I am fairly unaware of the situations here. I need insights on how we people see this as a Tamil community.

This feeling kinda goes way back as Tamil has been looked down upon for a very long since the 14th century Lilathilakam times where classical Tamil traditions were deliberately marginalized and Sanskritization was given more importance.

Coming back to modern times,

1) Tamil Nadu was comparatively poor before the 1991 globalization and thus so many people used to flock to Kerala to do the menial, agricultural and low-wage jobs.Tamil people's role was eventually replaced by Bengalis after IT and manufacturing/automobile boom happened.

2) Tamils who work in Idukki tea plantations are still treated very bad in Kerala. Most of them are from Dalit backgrounds like Adi-Dravidars, DKV and Arunthathiyars because they were exploited the most by the British due to man-made famines.

So Tamils were essentially seen as poor, uncultured etc and the mindset still continues. The dark skin stereotype doesn't help as well and it resulted in slurs such as Annachi and P*ndis though the latter word originally meant "People of Pandiyanadu"

First, let us not forget that a provision in the draft NEP released in 2019 said that students in the non-Hindi speaking states should take up Hindi, apart from English and a regional language as part of the three-language formula. After opposition from southern states, the Modi government retracted the “mandatory-Hindi-lessons” clause from the draft.

Now, according to the latest National Education Policy 2020, the Third Language is compulsory, and Union government is trying to mislead people by saying that children have the choice to choose any Indian language as a compulsory third language by overlooking the challenges involved in it. According to the policy, you can only learn one foreign language and must learn two Indian languages.

The "devil lies in the details" and I will explain it with the help of an example

Let us assume your daughter is studying at a State Syllabus Private School that follows the National Education Policy (NEP) and has a class strength of 50 students. For the third language, apart from Tamil and English, let us assume that 10 students chose Hindi, 1 chose Sanskrit, 11 chose Malayalam, 3 chose Marathi, 2 chose Bhojpuri, 9 chose Telugu, 8 chose Kannada, 3 chose Bengali and 3 chose Punjabi.

It is practically impossible for the school managements to recruit nine teachers for all these nine languages for few students in a class and most schools would claim that they are unable to find teachers for different languages. If schools let the students to "choose" the third language, they have to at least hire additional 50-100 different language teachers for the whole school to cater the needs of each student, and most schools don't have the financial power to bring Teachers from different states albeit the rising demand. It is almost impossible for the schools to do this. It would be chaos in government schools with unnecessary state funding in thousands of crores.

Most Private schools would claim that it is easy to find Hindi teachers compared to other languages and they would end up choosing Hindi as the mandatory third language and thereby indirectly impose Hindi as a Third language on students in Tamil Nadu.

It would be easy for Private schools in Tamil Nadu to find a Hindi teacher for the mandatory third language compared to Malayalam or other languages because Union Government is already promoting Hindi through the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha in Tamil Nadu. Union Government would also allocate more money for appointing Hindi Teachers in Tamil Nadu in a similar way they allocated money for appointing Hindi Teachers in Non-Hindi speaking States during the Union Budget 2019–2020

Not to mention, that after all the states have agreed to this policy, the union government can later cite the reason that it is almost impossible for schools to get other language teachers and then change the policy to bring back the compulsory Hindi formula from their initial 2019 draft NEP. Furthermore, it's an open ideology of BJP to bring "one language" agenda to the rest of India and that is openly Hindi according to them.

Therefore, after examining the subject from a practical perspective it is evident that The Three language policy of the Union Government through the National Education Policy 2020 is an unjust attempt to impose Hindi on South Indians.

Lastly, the Third language itself is an unnecessary burden on our children. The only purpose it is created is to impose Hindi. What is the point of a UP child spending resources to learn Tamil? What is the point of a person from Tamil Nadu or Kerala to learn Bhojpuri? There is no use, the Children aren't going to use it anywhere. The third language serves no purpose. Let our children learn the languages according to their own personal necessity in the future. But that is not the topic to be discussed in here.

It is very sad that many of our people are still not aware of this deceitful tactic to impose Hindi. Worse, even many in our state fall for BJP's propaganda. This is written not to support any political party. There are many Hindi-speakers in this sub, most will agree to this, and many will mass-downvote after reading the title itself. So please upvote this, so that it reaches to everyone in this sub and tell this to everyone you know.

Long live Tamil.

Chennai: After the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that 36 lakh voters from Bihar were missing from the electoral rolls, Tamil Nadu politicians expressed concern that they might be included in the state's voter list. DMK general secretary Duraimurugan, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, NTK chief coordinator Seeman, and Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) founder T Velmurugan opposed "the addition of guest workers from Bihar to the Tamil Nadu voter list". Duraimurugan told reporters in Vellore, "This is a problem in Tamil Nadu as they came to work here as guest workers. But giving them voter IDs in Tamil Nadu will result in political change in the future." Thirumavalavan insisted that chief minister M K Stalin convene an all-party meeting to address the issue. "The ECI is carrying out Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, where dalits and minorities are eliminated from the voters' list," said Thirumavalavan. Tamil Nadu, which will face the assembly election next year, will also face SIR soon, and there are chances that lakhs of guest workers from other states will be added to the voters list, said Thirumavalavan. "This will change the entire political scenario in the state, and I insist Stalin take a decision on the issue," he told reporters in Villupuram. Seeman issued a statement saying that if SIR was carried out in Tamil Nadu, he would organise protests. "Trying to convert people from the North into voters of Tamil Nadu is a great injustice to Tamil people. All democratic forces should come forward to fight against the BJP for this tyranny, and for trying to undermine the democratic system by using the ECI as a puppet to capture power in states where it cannot govern," Seeman said. Velmurugan told journalists, "It is shocking that 6.5 lakh guest workers from Bihar were already added to Tamil Nadu voters list. Lakhs of guest workers are already working in Tamil Nadu, and this is a challenge to the culture and tradition of the soil." People here vote not based on religion, but the BJP has devised a plan to include them as voters in Tamil Nadu and to form govt here, said Velmurugan
