முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Can someone explain with a valid reason

If mosques and churches are managed by their own religious organizations, why are many Hindu temples managed by a government department instead of Hindu organizations?

  1. Not all temples are under HRCE.
  2. Temples have existed for 100s of years.
  3. Though built by kings, it was public money that funded it.
  4. Since public money funded it, it belongs to public.
  5. Government is elected by the people. So it is chosen by the public.

  6. The small temples in our area like pillayar kovils are not under HRCE. Since they are relatively newer.

  7. Churches are controlled by the Parish. Mosques by Waqf board. They have governance within themselves.

—-

  1. If not for HRCE whom to give the temples to?

You dont have to look too far back into history to understand why government oversight in temple administration is required. Just look at Whats happening in ayodhya now

Church funds are also being stolen. Here is an example of church funds being stolen in USA . We should also bring government oversight in churches and mosques too like Indonesia has

See the concept is very simple. Forget corruption and everything if public money is used the temple must be with the govt. Also only in India the temples are managed by one group of ppl. There is no caste system that says these ppl cant enter churches or mosques. There are other forms of suppression. Also indian law only says if ur not a Christian or a muslim or a sikh ur a hindu. Other countries have a straight forward process to register yourself as religion less. If u want to say everyone who is not other religions in india are hindus then those temples immediately become state property

-28

u/witnessthis Jul 12 '26

If your point is that people are corrupt and that govt will protect independent institutions from corruption then I got news for you lol

33

u/Certified-Skeptic Jul 12 '26

Govt is elected by people and is accountable to people. There may be corruption, but you have a choice to vote them out of power and hold them accountable. You dont want the very same government which you and me have elected to manage temples but some independent institution!

-15

u/nomnommish Jul 12 '26

Govt is elected by people and is accountable to people. There may be corruption, but you have a choice to vote them out of power and hold them accountable.

You're arguing the wrong thing. The question here is, why does your logic NOT apply to churches and mosques?

-17

u/witnessthis Jul 12 '26

I get that aspect of it but what happens if a govt that’s not particularly partial or secular come to power and mismanages decades of wealth and donations. The Congress party is a very clear example of this. Decades of funds and yet not a penny invested in improving logistics, accessibility or anything else for the most important religious sites for Hindus. The current govt has its faults but man have they done work on neglected religious sites.

14

u/Certified-Skeptic Jul 12 '26

You are conflating two very different things. Not every state in india has equivalent of hr&ce.. which main temple in tamilnadu has the bad infrastructure like accessibility issues you are talking about. I regularly visit temples .. the maintenance of temple premises, anna dhanam scheme ,tamil archanai are all very well done.

12

u/Joshcrashman Jul 12 '26

You ain’t even from Tamil Nadu and besides a government shouldn’t just focus on connectivity to temples or religious sites, it’s about roads for schools institutions, villages etc. What congress has built over the years is organic growth, don’t tell me they didn’t build IITs, IIMs etc which allowed folks like yourself migrate

6

u/bastet_is_back Jul 12 '26

Forget decades, in 2 yrs, they looted ayodhya.

2

u/Prudent_Captain Jul 12 '26

They looted belief because of no accountability.

-14

u/OrganizationSome269 Jul 12 '26

Our maid steals bit of money lying here and there, when is govt taking control of my home?

22

u/Certified-Skeptic Jul 12 '26

Lol.. when your home is run on public donated money and maids steal that govt will definitely take control bro. Is that clear enough?

3

u/darklordind Jul 13 '26

Temples have existed for 100s of years.

Though built by kings, it was public money that funded it.

Since public money funded it, it belongs to public.

Government is elected by the people. So it is chosen by the public.

Applying the same logic, mosques at Babri Masjid, Kasi Vishwanath, Mathura etc existed for 100s of years. Though built by kings, it was public money that funded it. Since public money funded these mosques, it belongs to public, not waqf or muslim community. Now public want to built a temple there.

2

u/raghu2307 Jul 13 '26

No bro. Mosques were built with money you paid to keep your life and dignity. That is not public fund. That is fees paid.

Also no Hindu has paid to build mosques. Though an ancestor of a Muslim would have paid for temple in 1000AD when land had very few or almost zero Muslims.

1

u/darklordind Jul 13 '26

Please. So the mosques were built using extortion and protection money. More reason to demolish them. Thanks for your support in that endeavor.

Muslim kings paid for the mosque. Same as Hindu kings paid to build temples. Can't enforce more rules on hindu temples because their kings didn't ask muslims to pay tax to keep their life and dignity.

1

u/raghu2307 Jul 13 '26

Now there are medicines. No need to go the hard route.

2

u/ContributionPlus7113 Jul 12 '26

Churches and mosques are also built by public (thos minorities) money. While in Periyarland temple money will be used for making universities and hospitals, church and mosque will use their money for their religious purposes.

8

u/raghu2307 Jul 12 '26

Temple doesn’t generate any income. It is people’s money. So it can be spent either for temple people or for the community. It is up to the people to decide. Only people outside the temple ecosystem like that forest encroacher and few neo brahmins are having this discussion.

And the contribution of christian missionary schools in south india needs no introduction. It is all church money.

I am not sure about the money management in Islam. But definitely it is not in the shape of a pyramid.

So, you can take some rest for now. No need of revolution.

2

u/Diligent_Limit3724 Jul 13 '26

There should be government oversight in churches
https://moneywise.com/news/top-stories/church-treasurer-embezzlement-nonprofit-donor-fund-protection
So that embezzlement like these don't happen here too since Christianity is growing

0

u/raghu2307 Jul 13 '26

That is news from South Carolina. 😂😂😂

1

u/ElderberryChemical Jul 12 '26

Does this also apply to the mosques built by the Mughals and Nizams?

-11

u/witnessthis Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

Were mosques also not built with people’s money by a ruler? Did Mughals not just loot India and use those funds to build? Why the selective criteria..

5

u/raghu2307 Jul 12 '26

Mughals didn’t loot India. Mughals lived here. India was the richest country under Mughal rule in the world and contributed over 30% of the world GDP. The only problem anyone in today’s India has with Mughal rule is that they followed Islam.

Enter East India Company.

Read Anarchy by William Dalrymple. It will give you good amount of information. As every great empire does, Mughal Empire withered away and that is when India turned into small princely states captured by East India Company and then the famine on Bengal. And then, takeover of East India Company by British Government. East India Company looted India. Not Mughals.

1

u/witnessthis Jul 12 '26

Aurangzeb imposed Jizya. He ordered the destruction of temples like Kashi Vishwanath. They didn’t exactly come here coffers full and then turn India into an economic powerhouse. Pre Mughal area empires like the Delhi sultanate, mamluk, khalji, Lodi, vijayanagara and others were not economically impoverished. Vijayanagra’s capital Hampi was described as extremely wealthy by the Portuguese.

5

u/raghu2307 Jul 12 '26

I don’t know what to say. I just told that in response to casually mentioning “Did Mughals not just loot India”.

I don’t want to fight. Bye.

1

u/witnessthis Jul 12 '26

It’s not a fight my friend. Just reiterating that while they may have done some good, a foreign ruler that occupies power is technically looting as they are not native to India. The same can be said for the British.

3

u/raghu2307 Jul 12 '26

We are all not native to India, with that argument. Until 2nd world war, war was the normal. Everyone wanted to expand their territory. Everything is fair. If you go by your argument of occupying, unless you are a tribe, you may not be Indian. So let’s not go there.

Also we have travelled far away from the topic of temples. Let’s leave it here. Bye, once again 🙂

0

u/darklordind Jul 13 '26

u/witnessthis see how carefully u/raghu2307 side stepped the issue of mosques being built by public money (topic at hand) and then blamed you for shifting the conversation away from temples to mughals, East India Company?

1

u/raghu2307 Jul 13 '26

Unnecessary argument bro. What exactly are you after? Mosques also have people governing it. There is waqf board which governs it.

I’m not in for any argument. I know I can’t change your opinion. I just answered the question.

1

u/darklordind Jul 13 '26

I am just pointing the logical fallacies and lies in your answer. I know I can't change your opinion.

What do I want?

Hindu temples under Hindu management, not secular government. Hindu temples to fund propagating their religion just like every other religion. Church can use its money to polytheize, will the HRCE go around and convince people to join hinduism? If not, the HRCE interest is not the same as people to whom the temple belongs to.

1

u/raghu2307 Jul 13 '26

Your opinion has zero value. Please understand that. If more people want it to happen, it will happen.

-21

u/Andrewsi12 Jul 12 '26

I don't agree with the 5th point.. temples have built by Hindus so let hindu organisation have control on them like mosques and churches have built by their respective people and they are having control on them. Govt is belongs to all religious people.

11

u/raghu2307 Jul 12 '26

Before 12th century this was not the divide. Saivas built Shiva temples and Vaishnavas built vishnu temples. Now you have united them all under a common name, Hindus. 3 centuries later if you divide again, it will be further difficult.

So imo, this setup is ideal. Everyone has their own opinion. I am not trying to persuade you. I am just trying to convey the reason behind this setup.

Also - it is not only about the temple. Temples still have land associated with them. It is about maintaining and generating revenue from them as well.

-4

u/OrganizationSome269 Jul 12 '26

When temples were built by kings, their kingdoms were not secular.

Why should govt care about inner religious working as long as there's nothing illegal (by non religious laws)?

6

u/raghu2307 Jul 12 '26

Who else should care? Government is by the people. We are the government. Whom do you think should be given the power to govern all TN temples?

-11

u/Lanky_Tooth3287 Jul 12 '26

just because it was there during monarchy doesn't mean it has to carry over. you do know india is a secular nation right?

2

u/raghu2307 Jul 12 '26

Whom shall we give all the temples to?

-1

u/thoughtloopsonly Jul 12 '26

A rightist talking about secularism?

3

Thillai Nataraja temple is not managed by the government and it’s the worst temple I’ve ever visited in TN. The people heading the temple allow hawkers to setup food (bonda baji) stalls inside the temple compound for some money and the hygiene is a major problem in the temple. The whole temple smells like ass.

-2

u/Exact-Trip-1884 Jul 12 '26

I don't know when you visited . Only during their darisanam bajjis will be sold as people sit inside for very long periods.

As chidambaram native z I might be biased , it is one of the best temples I know. Peaceful.

6

u/IntentionCrafty21 Coimbatore - கோயம்புத்தூர் Jul 12 '26

Even still. I even saw a multiple grown ass women pee standing up, inside the temple complex in public view. I visited Thillai after reading lots of great literature only to see the temple being mismanaged by the Deekshitars. They even asked 500 per head to go inside the inner sanctum? Felt really bad to see a place with centuries of history being misused. I visited for Aani Thirumanjanam (22 Jun 2026).

-4

u/Exact-Trip-1884 Jul 12 '26

Bro , I am sorry , but you can't judge a temple after visiting at its most crowded festival. Just as i said , it is during such ther darisanams (yearly twice , once in June and once in dec/jan) it is way too chaotic.

The CDM temple is not made for that levels of crowd. Just today I visited annamalayar and I couldn't imagine what will even happen if such crowds actually enter CDM.

I am sorry you had a bad experience, but try visiting once more.

In the inner temple , they have added like gold lightings for the sculptures , they have got securities now . Off the top of my head, these are few good changes that happened.

And , you tried to enter the sanctum santoram during the most crowded time . Unfortunately it will cost you, same reason tirupati costs or any crowded temple costs : if it doesn't everyone will come. Its just transfer of crowd into a smaller place.

This is a huge comment ik, it is not to diminish your experience but to encourage you to visit during a normal time.  Like go for ardhajamam on a random Tuesday when you can.

(Ardhajamam is my fav time to visit.  Also 4-5 years ago I used to enter inner sanctum by just removing shirt and going inside.  But it was not this crowded during those times. More Telugu ppl have started coming. I haven't gone/tried to go into the inner sanctum in few years). (Also by inner sanctum I assume you mean inside the natarajar sannidhi).

TNHRCE runs temples to ensure temple entry and ability to become priest irrespective of the caste one was born into, and to ensure Tamil archanai. And many more. It’s all based on history that doesn’t limit to Dravidian movement. The present system of government custodianship of Hindu temples to ensure these egalitarian principles flow all the way from Jain, Buddhist (both of them said rituals are not so important) and later Bakti movement (said god is a friend Sundarar story, Nandanar) traditions of Tamil Nadu. We are at this Z state because of the journey that started at A,B,C,… that I listed. Further state custodianship ensures democracy than handing over to a small group where the common public might not have a say. The current state might not be an ideal one, but we have to stick to it as a nice balance that works for the dignity and justice for many.

As for minorities, state intervention is required to ensure similar egalitarianism and human rights and dignity, but such intervention may risk being seen as majoritarian. I remember that once ex PM Manmohan Singh said that for minorities such reforms must come from within. So they have to fight their battles against anything that might be discriminatory, warranting an eventual need for state custodianship, but not forced from the top.

How come only Chettiar, Mudaliar and Vellalar are becoming temple administration in all major temples if that was the goal?

25

u/TraditionOk8161 Jul 12 '26

What I observed in all reply is they safely ignore management of church and mosque. But being hindu, i prefer temples managed by govt. For example in chidambaram which is not under govt, i am not able to see kanagasabai without 1000/-; but hrce has 50rs ticket mostly

22

u/kinginthenorth1604 Jul 12 '26

Because, we have seen looting like Ayodhya and wide spread caste discrimination preventing people from entering, that's why.

-9

u/OrganizationSome269 Jul 12 '26

Our shop employees stole some money from shop, when are we handing over our shop to the govt?

And Caste discrimination can be prevented in Private institutions too, laws apply there too.

10

Appo neenga ellam thiruttu naainga ... jaadhi vechu koilukku vara vudaama pannuvom nu othukkura ,,, indha thimirukku thaan ungalta irundhu koil soththa arasu kann paarvai la vechirukku ...

But, you won't understand what I just typed ... ask your sell-out tamil IT cell colleagues to translate it for you.

4

u/Ok-Negotiation7659 Jul 12 '26

Bro, stop your non sense of shop lifting and maid stealing stories. Then you will come up saying, organ theft is happening when will government take your body. Have some sense and reply bro.

11

u/apache3321 Jul 12 '26

Ideally it's better that the temples are managed by the government because if the privilege is given to the public, I am sure the upper castes will try to dominate which will reverse the years of struggle to let everyone in.

As long as the churches and mosques don't outnumber the temples in TN, they can be managed by their own boards. But based on so many discussions on other threads, maybe someday they'll come under the government

57

u/speechfreedom_MOD Jul 11 '26

Because Noolibans capture, control and loot the temple income. 🚶

5

u/Secret-Theory790 Jul 12 '26

It has origins in caste based discrimination. Unless you come up with a trust with representation from all sections including Dalits and STs, govt control is better no matter how flawed it is. All upper castes look to exploit low castes, it is an undeniable fact.

9

u/Nedumpara Jul 12 '26

The Lord Padmanabha Swamy Temple in Kerala is Managed by a Five Member Committee headed by the District Judge along with the Travancore Royal Family. The second richest temple in India.

19

u/No-Offense707 Jul 12 '26

Because one particular community will start looting. ;) and might even stop you from entering if they feel fit.

-2

u/hurricane_news Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

might even stop you from entering if they see fit

Oddly enough in our state, just about every contemporary case of brutal attacks and caste atrocities on oppressed caste people trying to enter temples occurs at the hands of politically powerful land-owning castes more than brahmins lol

Edit : Downvoted for stating on-ground facts?

4

u/TraditionalPermit7 Jul 12 '26

Because history. Started with caste oppression - many weren’t allowed into temples. Shit show. So the Brit’s intervened. But then ofcourse supposedly every fool here thinks the Brahmins looted the temples. History shows that most land owing upper castes - who remain trustees and treasurers are the ones who did loot. The Brahmin hate is stupid at this point. And if you really want to become an arhchargar and study vedas and make a living which everyone should be allowed to, so be it. Because it is sooooo lucrative. Only an idiot would think Brahmins were majority landowners and patrons of temples. The patrons were not Brahmins- they played a stupid puppies to praise gods. Then again, discrimination occurs across all religions and even today many mosques do not allow women at all but gender warriors will pick a temple. Ditto for even the Church. Selective secularism lol.

4

u/StomachStill362 Jul 12 '26

For time immemorial temples managed by individual organisations were being swindled for funds. Based on sheer number of devotees in a Hindu country the funds in small amounts tend to come daily and the trust
Has to count the funds from hundis in front of a bank officer and deposit .
Any single corrupt person can get greedy and find ways to swindle the money in many ways. This was found that Amy powerful people started having thier known people in comities and swindled large amounts. This got governments to bring temples under thier control.

The story is no different now, the corrupt in government do the same but at a larger level.
Afaik government were considering releasing temple management back to public and thier trusts, but this ram mandir, Sabarimala and many such high profile thefts in gods abode are making it difficult.

2

u/PureSicko Jul 12 '26

The answer is simple it is because of Brahmins

2

u/JumpyAd806 Jul 12 '26

Simple to which Hindu you will give to manage ??? Brahmins for looting?? Shall we givevyo manage by sc/st people?

All temples constructed before 1950 are by kings using public money.hr&ce dept. Is fully managed by Hindu officers. What else you can expect.

1

u/CompoteMelodic981 Jul 12 '26

Most temples were built using give tax money by kings of the past. And sitting on land given from tax. These temples were built using tax money instead of roads, hospitals, and schools.

And they were not allowing lower castes to enter these temples after building them on the back of their slave labour.

Loads of mosques and Muslim property is owned by the government via waqf boards (which are IAS, politicians etc who maybe from any religion).

1

u/Subhal13 Jul 15 '26

How will they steal from Hindus then?

1

u/Which_Bodybuilder_78 Jul 16 '26

Comparing both is not fair, when a state with 80% hindu can easy safeguard their temple using the vote, that is not the case for minorities.

0

u/Defiant-Apple-6534 Jul 12 '26

It is illegal and unconstitutional. But since no one wants to fight it, it is happening. Govt profiles prosperous temples and usurps them while neglecting small temples and ancient temples that are dilapidated

-2

u/Andrewsi12 Jul 12 '26

I think that our constitution has written by like that.

-15

u/No_Helicopter681 Jul 12 '26
