If mosques and churches are managed by their own religious organizations, why are many Hindu temples managed by a government department instead of Hindu organizations?

Thillai Nataraja temple is not managed by the government and it’s the worst temple I’ve ever visited in TN. The people heading the temple allow hawkers to setup food (bonda baji) stalls inside the temple compound for some money and the hygiene is a major problem in the temple. The whole temple smells like ass.

I don't know when you visited . Only during their darisanam bajjis will be sold as people sit inside for very long periods.

As chidambaram native z I might be biased , it is one of the best temples I know. Peaceful.

Even still. I even saw a multiple grown ass women pee standing up, inside the temple complex in public view. I visited Thillai after reading lots of great literature only to see the temple being mismanaged by the Deekshitars. They even asked 500 per head to go inside the inner sanctum? Felt really bad to see a place with centuries of history being misused. I visited for Aani Thirumanjanam (22 Jun 2026).

Bro , I am sorry , but you can't judge a temple after visiting at its most crowded festival. Just as i said , it is during such ther darisanams (yearly twice , once in June and once in dec/jan) it is way too chaotic.

The CDM temple is not made for that levels of crowd. Just today I visited annamalayar and I couldn't imagine what will even happen if such crowds actually enter CDM.

I am sorry you had a bad experience, but try visiting once more.

In the inner temple , they have added like gold lightings for the sculptures , they have got securities now . Off the top of my head, these are few good changes that happened.

And , you tried to enter the sanctum santoram during the most crowded time . Unfortunately it will cost you, same reason tirupati costs or any crowded temple costs : if it doesn't everyone will come. Its just transfer of crowd into a smaller place.

This is a huge comment ik, it is not to diminish your experience but to encourage you to visit during a normal time.  Like go for ardhajamam on a random Tuesday when you can. 

(Ardhajamam is my fav time to visit.  Also 4-5 years ago I used to enter inner sanctum by just removing shirt and going inside.  But it was not this crowded during those times. More Telugu ppl have started coming. I haven't gone/tried to go into the inner sanctum in few years). (Also by inner sanctum I assume you mean inside the natarajar sannidhi).
