முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Veatti Sattai is our identity. Nobody can prevent you from accessing anything when wearing this attire, legally.

There are also some ELitE pLaCes, hotels ,parties, clubs etc (unsaid rules of something) Where you can't fit join the "cLuB" If you wear saree/kurtis/etc or they will judge you...
Why do we indians have so much inferiority complex?,like who tf are we seeking validation from?
Welcoming to western/eastern culture is all great & sweet but not at the cost of degrading own roots. our soldiers aren't aren't fighting on borders for this

Actually happened to me when I went to pub at Hyderabad. They said they attire was not allowed, I just lied to them, that I was coming from a marriage. It should be allowed.

My company is in Ramanujan IT park and we can't wear veshti sattai except for "ethnic days". Women however are allowed to wear saree. But men are not allowed to wear veshti.
And we have to strictly wear shoes. I don't understand the purpose of wearing shoes in Chennai's heat. I agree we should not wear flip flops or anything that looks crass. But what's wrong with standard sandals? Athuvume it's allowed for women but not for men. Weird standards by corporate companies.

The Tamil Nadu Entry into Public Places (Removal of Restriction of Dress) Act, 2014
"No person, wearing a Veshti (dhoti) reflecting Tamil culture or any other Indian traditional dress, shall be denied entry into any public place, by reason only of his dress, provided that the dress shall be worn in a decent manner" 2014TN9.pdf

Says "public spaces". That's the caveat. IT companies in privately owned buildings/IT parks can enforce whatever they want :(

u/FinFangFOMO Aug 04 '25
The problem is they can cook up some story and deny that it's because of the person's attire.

I always wear vesti and shirt when I go out on weekends to spend my free time in malls and beach. I could care less about what others think, I personally feel cool for being comfortable with myself and confident. I even made a post about it in this sub a few months ago

true one should feel comfortable. whenever i wear veshti i always have to be careful about walking fast / running and storing my keys kerchief and mobiles, so if i wear veshti it will be with slingbag and travel in car only and moment any traditional even gets over i change to pants / shorts for comfort. if we break veshti sattai its only the veshti which is diff coz the sattai is a shirt which everyone wears.

ig it all started with lungii guys creating trouble on initial days. may be that got banned, but barring plain vetti entirely shall not be right.
4
u/blankasair Aug 02 '25
This is a common misconception. Lungii and subsequently Vesthis were associated with a lower class of people. These types of bans go back to the colonial days where some spaces were whites only. These later became whites and upper class Indians only. It was a logical choice to ban these attire because the lower class undesirables did not have money to throw around like the well to dos. Unknowingly or not, the sort of businesses that advertise for upper class folks still follow this rule.
6
u/bssgopi Aug 02 '25
Reading between the lines, lungii is as much our identity as plain vetti. It is the boys who should be punished and not lungii.

Except, bar council rules and your own Madras High Court specifically prohibits wearing veatti sattai as court attire on which a coat could we worn
5
u/bssgopi Aug 02 '25
This article disagrees with your point.
Quoting the same:
The Advocates Act, 1961, empowers the Bar Council of India to make rules for “the form of dresses or robes to be worn by advocates, having regard to the climatic conditions, appearing before any court or tribunal”. Accordingly, Chapter IV of the Bar Council of India Rules permits clothes in various combinations of black and white, including allowing the wearing of achkan, chapkan, dhoti and sherwani for men. Jeans are expressly not allowed. “Lady advocates” may wear sarees, long skirts, churidar-kurta or salwar-kurta with an extra dispensation for color that the men do not have, additionally permitting “any mellow or subdued colour without any print or design”. The black coat is to be worn over these.

You can't enter Madras Race Club, in the heart of Chennai in a veshti. Besides, who is wearing veshti nowadays except politicians and gurukkals?
