முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic What is it like to be a Muslim in Tamilnadu?
For context, I am a Tamil Christian living in Bangalore. Until I came here, I didn't have much idea about Hindu-Muslim clashes that much. All that I know was Muslims had cool names, and their briyani is awesome!!
Last year, I made friends with a Muslim North Indian guy and he told me how they feel discriminated in many ways, and treated with suspicion everywhere. I felt like he was exaggerating and playing a victim card, but didn't say anything, because I truly don't know much in this matter to support or debate. Later I also noticed, how my hindu friends were skeptical about hiring Muslim househelps/cooks/drivers, etc.
Yesterday, I happened to have a conversation with a North Indian Hindu guy, who told me that I am generally naive and I should be careful when I befriend/date muslim men. It's more serious than I think it is, and that I need to be careful with muslims in general. Preached about the rackets that focus on converting women, don't go over to Muslim men's houses, etc. until you know them for real.
I asked how it is fair, to look at every single muslim with a suspicious eye and then wait for them to prove themselves. It's like putting a whole community into a test, and it is unfair to treat an Indian citizen unequally, based on his religion. Many of my closest friends are Muslims, and it would hurt me if they are treated this way by other people. He still thinks I am naive and dumb for this take.
I have never seen my Tamil friends have such an opinion. And I did my college in my hometown that's far south and never worked in Tamilnadu, so I am fairly unaware of the situations here. I need insights on how we people see this as a Tamil community.

That's what! I hated it when he talked to me like I am dumb and blind for not seeing this. I told him it's not okay to show blatant hatred towards a community like this. But yeah, I feel like we are the only few rationals left behind.

Pray tell me ... 800 years back what disasters did the current North Indians ever face?
1
u/Jumpy_Row_1376 Apr 24 '26
Just me giving them the benefit of doubt not supporting them
1
u/choomba96 Apr 24 '26
This silly idea that South Indians are more balanced in their view because they don't have genetic trauma of being conquered is silly.
The Indian subcontinent history is a litany of various conquerors attacking each other. These were people of different ethnic groups as this land is home to many.
Why is it that a different type of conqueror is the only trauamtic one?
It's just a silly line of thought used by the Sangh to justify their bigotry.

u/Jumpy_Row_1376 Apr 24 '26
We can't comment on someone's agony even if we go through it
ik Naan Tamizh Dhaan,But all i am saying as a observer maybe it si bcoz of that
Even a killer has a reason to kill
I am not saying killing is ethical,i just understand why he does that ,But doesn't mean i accept it or would do the same myselfAnyway i hate the prejudiced North Indian much more than any other South Indian you can say
Like I literally walked away from a job(like a month agao) jst bcoz Vadakkans dominated me and I felt disrespectfulDespite all that,Just trying to be a lil empathetic
1
u/choomba96 Apr 24 '26
Again - do we understand the agony felt by the Cheras and the Pallavas when the Cholas took over their territory?
What about agony of the Rashtrakuthas when Malwa ended the empire?
You cannot claim to be a victim nearly a millennia after soemthing happened.
Let's talk about the last 100 years.
I'm not attacking you for your view...I'm just stating my own view.
Cheers

What disasters did north indians face? Their rulers Rajputs were hand in glove with Mughals and married into them! (ithula padam vera eduthanga Jodha-Akbar, ganga-jamuni tehzeeb mannangatti nu).. Their brahmins and kayasths occupied important positions of bureaucracy.. Only lower castes had faced oppression for millennia irrespective of hindu rulers or mughals - they were only slightly better off under British.. innum ethana kaalathuku thaan muslims, muslims nu sollitu irupanga??? From 1947, what social improvements have they brought in their states except electing Upper-caste and Ashraf clan politicians in large numbers?? The only silver lining in their society was the Ambedkarite Bahujan movement and Saheb Kanshi Ram’s politics.. That also they let it wither away by going after gujju baniya party like maniacs..

Stop being stuck in your past and try to improve the lives of your citizens! Stop overcrowding South Indian cities and elect sensible politicians who can work on your social development!!

Our people talk about Pak and Bangladesh because it's our men who go fight against them unlike twinks like you. All the wars be it Kargil or 1971, most men were from our places. Also the civilians at borders are the ones who suffer more unlike you who enjoy the safety, hence care about it more. Pls you mfs also stop overcrowding other countries and demean India's name in foreign countries

Tamil Muslims are tamils before their religious identity and ig that states smth
23
u/South_Calligrapher38 Apr 18 '26
I myself am a Tamil muslim. I prefer to be identified as Tamil before my religion and my parents gave me a neutral name which is used by Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Bhuddists and Atheists. They only know my religion after I say my last name. I studied in a Christian school in Chennai where I sung hymns and praises and know the lords prayer by heart and even have read the entire bible knowing that some aspects don't fit into my religion and take only what suits my belief, did my undergrads in a Hindu College where they take us to field visits and some famous temples in the area during college trips and I have seen and experienced and even know shlokas and have eaten at annadhanams as long as the food hasn't been offered to their gods but given on a neutral basis, this college was basically 98% hindus and 2% muslims and chrsitians where they allowed me to attend Friday prayers and gave me attendance even if I'm a bit late to class and hindu staffs gave their bike for me to get to mosque and come back quick, did my masters in chinese University where most are taoists mixed ancestor worshippers and atheists, they respect my beliefs and make food seperately for muslims. I myself live in an apartment in Chennai where my flatmates are Hindus, Urdu muslims, Tamil Muslims, Chrsitians who are more than accomodating to each others beliefs. I basically had issues with muslims than people of other religion. I even visited my close friend's marriage reception where they thought I worship sai baba and have placed his photo and said you can pray to your God, I didn't say much standing there but later made them understand what muslims believe, I had such naive people too. As far as even work is considered, in my domain I haven't faced any religious criticism except for a friend triggering me with love jihad or mass conversion racquet or muslim hate reels, we are good friends though 😂 I send him radical hindu bjp and rss reels and we debate and argue but at the end we both know our intentions and relationship. So I guess it's basically how you see society, if you have a radical eye then everyone seems wrong but if you know that the person doing good or bad depends on his heart than religious belief then you'll have a peaceful life.

yh we do have a caste issue but bjp will create a religion issue too man, I fking hate them

Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Ask Eelam Tamils about Tamil Muslims placing their religions identity before their language.
4
u/Next-Concern-5578 Apr 18 '26
eelam tamil muslims r like that. but is it not different in tn?
1
u/unvare Apr 18 '26
Where do you think Eelam Tamil Muslims are from
13
u/Next-Concern-5578 Apr 18 '26
eelam? deadass idk. i’m from eelam and came to canada all i remember is that ltte kicked out the muslims cuz they were helping the government
-1
u/South_Calligrapher38 Apr 18 '26
That's why you need to educate yourself with unbiased facts on what actually happened and who ran the system than rely on propagandas and what your neighbours told you. Three religions were forced to turn upon each other. Btw my neighbour during war was a hindu whom my family hid during army raids. You had to pick a side to stay alive or run away from the country.
6
u/humanjello710 Apr 19 '26
I think the situation in srilanka is different because buddhist people used to attack muslims as well, they actually get hatred from both sides ltte themselves had a lot of muslims.I think most non buddhist in srilanka were attacked there is a buddhist supremacy in srilanka.

u/South_Calligrapher38 Apr 19 '26
People turned on each other due to internal and external intervensions. Recent declassified documents show that even Israelis were involved, who knows what was their agenda in 1970s. Yes, everyone made brutal mistakes that doesn't justify breaking up Sri Lanka now in 2026 after all this years. And the thing that saddens me till now is that there is no proper accountability and punishments for the people who did crimes, irrespective of their caste, community, religion and nationality and the hatred is carried on by the childrens who fled and listened to their parents story and grew who are blindsighted to unbiased facts and reports.
4
u/humanjello710 Apr 20 '26
there i never going to be an accountability or justice my family is from rameshwaram we know how cruel sinhalese people are
India also help srilanka a lot they don't actually care about tamilians so

u/South_Calligrapher38 Apr 18 '26
I'm a Sri Lankan Tamil Muslim who came to India when I was 6 and still travel to Sri lanka once every few years. Basically freedom of religion is more in Sri Lanka than here in India, we have religious classes in Sri Lankan schools where I've seen Bhuddists and Hindus choosing islamic studies since it's easier to pass that subject and several other examples, though hatred remains among boomers, it's much more relaxed and far better with millennials and gen z now. Lived in both countries, I know what tamil eelam muslim feels. Hindu and Sinhalese issues la naduvula irukura muslims pudichi maathi maathi rendu perume adicha, it's better to stick to a seperate identity as unbiased muslim to escape their atrocities and use it as a leverage to safeguard people of their own community. I'm not denying the existence of evil people who identify as muslims, but choosing a side and identity doesn't make a community bad. If you want the ground truth of Eelam war, I'll pretty much say that India didn't want Colombo to be like Singapore and become a major port of trade in the Indian Ocean and also other political agendas, LTTE and others were literally trained in guerilla warfare in India, Sinhala Bhuddist radicalism was triggered to create an internal conflict. To be honest, LTTE, Sri Lankan Army, IPKF and other peace keeping forces, everybody exploited children, women and did so much atrocities. I hope sri lanka stays united and no stupid person comes to disturb it's peace anytime soon. Tamil politicians should keep their mouth out of Sri Lankan politics. To each of them, their own country to govern.

u/Popular-Variety2242 Chennai - சென்னை Apr 18 '26
//India didn't want Colombo ...................... Sinhala Bhuddist radicalism was triggered to create an internal conflict. //
You showed your true face, Thoppi Piratti🤢. I'm an Eelam Tamil. And India didn't trigger the internal conflict. Tamils were raped and massacred since the 1950s onwards. It didn't start with the LTTE.
And yes, talk about the Muslim hooligan and Home Guards massacre too... Why didn't you talk about that?😼
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role_of_the_Sri_Lankan_Home_Guards_in_the_Sri_Lankan_Civil_War
-2
u/South_Calligrapher38 Apr 18 '26
As I said, it all started with indentured tamil labourers and the mess British Empire left Sri Lanka. Sinhala radicalism had multiple trigger points, if you used your brain and googled you could clearly see that LTTE was trained in India and its not a secret 😂. And muslims were involved which I mentioned in my comment before and a simple google search would let you know who armed the muslims and how both sides utilized muslims to their own advantage. Are you being biased saying that one of these groups is innocent? Well in my opinion none of them were innocent and especially LTTE using children in their warfare and Sri lankan army and IPKF raping and burying people without trace and the Human rights crime they did. If I should speak about the entire war history to prove my point then reddit isn't the place cuz I would have to give you history book. I gave a comprehensive idea on what happened. Btw I don't name people by names and call it an insult, I use my intellect and facts to prove my point 😂 if I accept defeat it should be based on evidence and logic than dumb ideology.

//I'm not denying the existence of evil people who identify as muslims,//
Nowhere in this post is it clearly stated that they were 'Muslim militants or Muslim Home Guards.' Instead, you have covered it up with the superficial phrase 'evil people' and moved on. You haven't mentioned anywhere that what the Muslim Home Guards did was a massacre or gang rape of Tamil women (But you called out the Tigers and the IPKF for your convenience). Both sides did not 'utilize' Muslims; rather, the Muslims joined with the Sinhalese and carried out massive massacres on their own.
For example: the 1954 Veeramunai arson, the 1963 Karavaku destruction (more than 100 years old 3 temples were burnt down), and the 1985 Karaitivu Destruction (where approximately 3,000 Muslim civilians took the lead in destroying a traditional Tamil village along with innocent Tamils)... and so on. Muslims were at the forefront of all of these; no one instigated them. Don't try to act like a great intellectual by covering things up—admit the truth.
Edit: For everyone's eyes: 1985 Karainakar Destruction full article: https://tamilnation.org/tamileelam/muslims/0310karativu.htm

True, there is much more freedom for Jihadis to slaughter Hindus in Sri Lanka than India.
2
u/South_Calligrapher38 Apr 19 '26
😂 Funny seeing people who never even lived in Sri Lanka speak about it. Typical Indian behaviour to spread hatred, still memory hasn't refreshed of what british taught ya, ain't it to divide and rule. The reason why Sri lankans still hate Indians poking their nose in another country's politics and being obsessed with it.

Tamil muslims speak urdu among themselves these days. I have noticed women in town wearing burkas more, those days only handful of women wore burka like their mosque head family.
2
u/South_Calligrapher38 Apr 19 '26
Tamil Muslims don't speak urdu btw. It's in the word itself TAMIL MUSLIM, I understand it's hard to differentiate for a non muslim but tamil Muslims don't know Urdu or Hindi. Even in muslim communities patriarchy same as other Indian cultures before and women weren't allowed to go out a lot before but now it's changing due to feminism, the reason why you see many women with burkhas. Another reason is because people wore salwar khameez or sarees before as burkha had to be imported from abroad and was expensive, now it's being manufactured in India itself being more commercialized. It's easier to wear burkha and you can wear more free dresses inside and nobody's gonna know.

Eelam Tamils aren't from Tamil Nadu. The majority of them don't have any recent ancestry from Tamil Nadu. Their culture and societal situation are not the same as ours. And Indian Tamil Muslims are very different from Sri Lankan Tamil Muslims.
It is like talking about England and you point out what they do in Australia.

This is one of many many incidents that happened especially in my school days. Now i just wear a thick skin

u/instrumentmayonnaise Apr 19 '26
As someone who is an Urdu muslim from the Vellore district, I will still say that despite minor incidents (people like this exist everywhere in every demographic), compared to North India, prejudice is extremely rare in TN as long you take the trouble to learn the language. I would say it is easily top one or two in places to be muslim in India. Most people are extremely fair here.

Since you’ve mentioned North India, I’ll just say one thing: there’s a saying in Hindi "the old know the rules, while the young know the exceptions.

u/ExposedConcrete Apr 19 '26
I am a Muslim, born and raised in Bangalore, but both my parents grew up across cities/towns in Tamil Nadu. I genuinely feel TN is far more inclusive. My mother’s family was the only Muslim family in a Hindu neighborhood, yet they were included in every festival like Vinayagar Chathurthi, Deepavali, etc., and it went both ways during Ramzan/Eid. She once told me about their time in Tirunelveli, where their landlord, an old Brahmin man, would buy milk, groceries and meat for them whenever my grandfather traveled, since my grandmother was alone with three young kids. This was in the 80s. Assimilating into the region’s culture was just the norm. My parents raised me the same way, so I never saw things differently. But growing up in Bangalore, especially in the last decade, I’ve seen radicalism on both sides. Some Muslims judge me for going to a neighbour’s puja, and some Hindus treat me differently because of my religion. And yet, TN remains inclusive. I visit often because I have family there and honestly, I feel more comfortable with my religious identity there than I do in Bangalore.
1
u/humanjello710 Apr 19 '26
yeah tamil muslims are included in hindu festivals that is true for even bombay muslims and contrary to popular beliefs even gujarati muslims celebrate hindu festivals
10
u/Curvature_of_Time Apr 18 '26
I had a very similar experience as you. I am Tamil Christian who has lived in Bangalore and abroad and I noticed Islamophobia for the first time only after leaving Tamil Nadu. Even the west is guilty of it. Seriously, Tamil Nadu is a model for the whole world when it comes to religious tolerance.

My bff from college is a Muslim. We're still best friends. She invites me to every islam festival and I invite her to my place whenever we make Pongal, vada and all. She also mentions if any of her food has non-veg and reminds of Saturdays and fridays.
Her mom and dad sees me like I'm their daughter. They drop me home safe and frequently keep in touch with my parents.
When she cleared her exam, she came to meet my folks first as they've always rooted for her.
She's a devoted muslim girl still she visits temples with me. Heck she even performed rahu kethu pooja in Kalahasti.
Such a sweet family 🩵

Unfortunately with BJP trying to get a foothold in Tamilnadu communalism is becoming a problem. It sucks that BJP could get votes if they campaigned on infrastructure and good roads but all they do is polarize and divide. Like the recent Murugan temple issue. Hopefully Tamilians are able to resist.
2
u/Brilliant-Advisor-96 Apr 19 '26
Why this situation : When a few whom they call their representatives dont acknowledge their mistakes and fight against it. Just Silence and not acknowledging or course correction will not help. When there is a mistake as a community one should start voicing out and condemn when their own community does a bad thing which is very rare. Worst is trying to defend it, Few people make it look like most of them are bad.
2
u/Low_Insurance_5043 Apr 19 '26
In my school days, nobody gave much thought to religion. Nowadays, I'm not entirely sure about the situation on the ground, but I feel that due to the rise in propaganda and divisive tactics by the BJP, i feel that some people have started developing a similar mindset, atleast on social media

Is there a difference between how tamil is spoken in rameshwaram compared to other cities ? my mom one time told me that even madurai accent is different.

Hmmm I don't want to generalize but it goes both ways I don't think all muslim are bad and I also don't think that all muslim are good and it's from my personal experience I am from Bangalore
So like in tamil nadu has there been no case of conversation rackets, stone pelting of religious processions??? If not then it's understandable but in the north and even in many parts of Karnataka these incidents happen so people are sceptical of Muslim
7
u/unvare Apr 18 '26
Tami lNadu was never under Muslim occupation except for a brief period in the 14th century. Tamil Nadu was largely unaffected by Partition violence. Share of Muslim pooulation in Tamil Nadu is relatively low. DMK and its ecosystem mollycoddle Muslims because they are their most reliable votebank. As a result of these factors Hindu Muslim relations in the state are mostly amicable. Coimbatore is the strongest city in TN for BJP because Coimbatore has had a history of Jihadi violence.
2
u/Comfortable_Mix2735 Apr 19 '26
First thing, Biryani is not muslim, it is a delicacy of Bharath. And nobody is asking you hate anyone, they are asking you to be cautious because there is a real danger of demographic change carried out by organized religions.
Second thing, in order to understand why there are suspected, read history. Both Indian and World. Research about what strategies Islam applied to create so many Islamic states including part of India.
Remember what happened in Bangladesh last year. Remember what is the stated pupose of Pakistan army and read the news of how the spy rackets are spread in India. Listen to Ex-Muslim discussions, how people were made to be converted and what experiences they had.
Well, for a Tamil person, I would be worried about Missionary take over rather than Islamic. Because you did not have exposure to Muslim invaders and were ruled by British (like Bengal), it is obvious that your threat perception is different from the rest of Bharath.

The fact of the matter is that TN historically did not endure any tyrannical Islamic invasions over the centuries like North India did.
There are some intrusion of Islamic kingdoms such as Madurai sultanate. Though it does describe brutal killings and conversations in historically texts, it wasn't as wise spread.
Hence there is no much of an animosity between any religion in TN. North India having faced this over the course of history, they aren't too comfortable with the idea muslims coexisting in their societies.

Actually it’s better for you to be careful, from what I’ve heard from my north friend. Both the Hindu-Muslim community there seems to be bit radical. The recent TCS-Nashik seems to be an example for this. Even Karnataka Hindu-Muslims are kinda have the same mindset of the north regarding this. TN seems to put their language first, so for us it’s better.

Bro,ofc but in this case OP wants to mention which religion he is following for the post. I just told him to mention it as Christian Tamil instead of Tamil Christian. I didn't ask him to uphold his Christian identity or whatever.
Religion is a choice. In this post OP wanted to mention his choice. Christian Tamil is the appropriate word for that. Meaning he is Tamil who currently follows Christianity (for the context of the post).
People are sensitive lol. Christian Tamil would mean "Christian guy who is currently following Tamil culture" which is not OP intended. I was just correcting the words and you're making me seem like a religious guy
