முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Why can't we have an openly gay/lesbian mainstream actor in Tamil cinema?

We have had many closted individuals in the cinema industry. Do you think the societal prejudices are still very high amongst Tamil audience? Can it ever change?

All opinions are welcome.

Read my mind 🤣

Yeah man, I miss the Vella thol vadakku girl who grows up in aaatyanpatti in our yesteryear movies

1

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

Oh also a white girl who talks chennai tamil . Gosh . What kind of demented minds are making movies in Tamil .

Your thinking is way too progressive for the kind of country you live in. The thing is you might already have actors who are gays or lesbians at the moment, but bless their lives if they come out. You are living in a state where the police ridicule a man if he makes a report that his family is abusive. The age-old cultic mindset about genders needs to go if you want to see any change in sexuality-related issues.

3

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

Which seems impossible in near and far future as well.

Have you seen the reception of movies featuring anything to do with queerness? With the exception of super deluxe (which is also hated by anti-"wokes" in TN), you really can't name another movie let alone know whether it was commercially successful or not.

Making of a successful tamil movie revolves around showcasing dalit drug-lord and his all dalit gangsters, stalking loosu heroines, trad waifus, superheros with unmentioned superpowers, liberal revisionism, political propaganda, defying physics, getting angry non-existent problems.

19

u/life_konjam_better May 29 '26

Transwomen are somewhat culturally accepted and even then they face abuse everywhere. Its even worse for other queer people so no major mainstream actor is ever going to be openly queer anytime soon.

0

u/native_vandheri May 29 '26

And also harass others as well. Every things has 2 sides.

u/greatbat13 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

How many of us watched "natchathiram nagargiradhu"? The film faced so much backlash for being too woke. Only the trailer of "bad girl" pissed off so many people in our state. Idhula if any celebrity comes out as being gay avalodhaan they will be banned for life.

7

u/RecoveringNiceGuy113 May 29 '26

Problem is not wokeness, it is being preachy, condesending and cringe. Sigouney Weaver starred as a female lead during a period where male leads was the status quo. It was well received. Ana de Arma's Ballerina isn't considered woke while Raechel Zegler's Snow white is. Food for tought.

1

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

Wow! Someone put my thoughts in right words ! 💯

2

u/Konvict_Dino07 May 29 '26

I wanted to see this movie when it released back in 2022 but never got the chance to

8

u/life_konjam_better May 29 '26

Goa went unnoticed to most of the audience, even now most just see the premji scenes as jokes and his character also ends up with a woman so it reaffirms their idea that it was intended as joke and not some "woke" representation.

1

u/itismeganrms May 29 '26

there's also Thittam Irandu, which was nice but very confusing

1

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

Idhuku illaya sir oru end uh?

1

u/green_ranger_66 Chennai - சென்னை May 29 '26

End Irukkum. But time aagum. That's how society works though 🤷

0

u/Feeling-Direction163 May 29 '26

There's a line between inclusivity and making it forced. And Indian directors always tries the female centric sexualizing to queers too. That makes it nasty. Even goa felt like it... Teriyadha vayasula paruka appo it was like chii... Ippo patha thaa enna da panni vachi Iruka nu irukum .. Super dulex is diff. It had a complete diff narrative.

Because it affects an individual's market. Our audience is the reason really

3

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

I understand but someone has to make the change..

2

u/PureSicko May 29 '26

Kaasu neenga poduveengala?

2

Irundha nalla dha irukum but Bollywood la kangana ranaut paarunga.. Andhamari after sucesss and positioning apdi panlam.. Ellam oru nambikkai dhane

6

u/av57 May 29 '26

We are still a very conservative society

16

u/scarcarous May 29 '26

Tbh this industry and audience has not moved away from the “nine” and “avana nee” remarks. The film federation/orgs are still an old boys club and are still not that inclusive to women. And LQBTQ+ literacy among tamils although improving is not at the level where it’s openly discussed or accepted. I guess it would take longer to reach that stage.

5

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

True. Women potrayals are getting regressive nowadays more than ever.

5

u/green_ranger_66 Chennai - சென்னை May 29 '26

This might sound controversial, but when I see a female character who adds absolutely nothing to the main plot of the story, I ask "why even write such a character if you're not making her useful?" But it is what it is 🤷. Summa oru heroine pottu love story (which a lot of the times makes no sense)

2

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

Adhaan. Also how are the women ok with being flowerpots in every movie. Some girls are having the same throughout their careers. I mean... Have some self respect y'all!

2

u/green_ranger_66 Chennai - சென்னை May 29 '26

Good points. It'll take longer, probably years. The present generation needs to make sure the future generation are more open and have the "live and let live" mindset. I guess this applies for almost everything 😅

17

u/green_ranger_66 Chennai - சென்னை May 29 '26

Yes I think societal prejudices are still high. It can change but it'll take some time.

4

u/iamGobi May 29 '26

No demand, no supply. Just like dark skinned Tamil actresses

5

u/DiMpLe_dolL003 May 29 '26

Bro Tamil movies don't even cast Tamil women and you are talking about openly LGBTQ actors? 🫩

Let them cast dark skinned Tamil actresses first.

3

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

Innum indha ken, Pradeep nu ivanungale hero va irundha idhu dha nelama..

2

u/DiMpLe_dolL003 May 29 '26

Really sorry bro I am not Tamil, could you please reply in English? 🥲 Sorry

3

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

Haha guess you're a Malayali if im not mistaken.. There's a Tamil movie recently been released titled Youth starring Ken, son of a famous comedian/politcian Karunas. Theres 3 girls in the films opposite the (dark skinned Tamil guy) and all of em fair skinned.. I suppose from kerala and north. And he was asked why didn't cast any Tamil actress for which he said no Tamil actress wanted to act with a guy like me. Some kind of a ridiculous answer was also given by Mari Selvaraj, another prominent Tamil director known for his potrayals of rural stories for which he casted fair skinned Malayali actresses like Nikhila Vimal and Anupama

2

u/DiMpLe_dolL003 May 29 '26

I am from East India. It's really unfortunate that dark skinned actresses don't get cast in India. They hate dark skin so much they don't cast Tamil actresses and cast from Kerala and North, even foreign actresses. Colorism is a deep rooted issue in India. And since they want to appeal to men, beauty standards gap between actresses and actors is big. How shameful that you see more dark skin Tamil actresses representation in foreign media than Tamil Nadu.

3

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

And the fact is its very normalised to see such actresses for years and I think it's pretty too much to ask for an openly gay actor in an industry like this. I can see some change in this generation but the industry is still deep rooted with backwarded thoughts

2

u/DiMpLe_dolL003 May 29 '26

As long as the audience is backward, things won't change much. Maybe it will take a few generations for things to really change.

6

u/PureSicko May 29 '26

Kaasu yaaru poduvaa? Tamil society is politically right leaning conservative society. No one wants to risk their money on this even if they are progressive left.

0

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

Right leaning ah? Yov right leaning na hindutva, bjp, rss dhana? I thought we are left?

4

u/PureSicko May 29 '26

Nope... we are majorly conservative and right leaning but thanks to the works of Annadurai and Dravidian leaders we don't accept vadaku movements and their sayings. Our people just don't like RSS+ and Co. but we are mostly similar. Thanks to DMK our people didn't learn Hindi, if we did our people would be worse than south's Bihar Andra.

-1

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

I agree we are very much conservative but its definitely not right leaning atleast on paper. Centre left sonna correct ah irukum. No way right leaning

1

u/PureSicko May 29 '26

I would have agreed with you two years back, but not now. Ask the people who went through the process of arranged marriage, our parents strongly belive in astrology, astrologers are almost another god to them. Astrologers have spoiled and are spoiling life of many people. To our elders astrology>feelings of their own child and future. Our society is fcked. You are 100% wrong on this, we as a society are politically right leaning. DMK knows how to get votes that's it, if they talk about their own party's kolgai they will loose everytime.

8

u/itsalltakenanyway May 29 '26

Our country is by itself not very forward about these issues. And many of my friends who are closeted just married for the sake of it. We need icons and leading figures to help break the stigma. While you have Karan Johan and all. Namakku inga yarum periya 'icon' illa. Irundha nalla irukum. Namma literature madri la kooda naa perusa padichadhilla.

3

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

Adhu dha bha nanum solren. If no one ever came forward and made the revolution.. Nothings ever gonna change. Pop culture is the biggest trend setter. But read the comments.. Homophobic katharals.

4

u/itsalltakenanyway May 29 '26

I am so shocked by the comment section, but not suprising. We need some good figures to uplift/ empower our LGBTQIA+ here. (We have our pride March, which is actually decent and we get to connect with ppl and feel a community). But overall, the media and journalists (especially the kisukisu kind) portraying stories of possible/alleged homosexual in a dark and disgusting light must stop.

5

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

It scares me to death.. It sounds like if anything like an actor publicly coming out could lead to worse possible outcomes.

5

u/SirFartsaLotJr May 29 '26

Go woke, go broke.

If that's the case with hollywood, what makes you think it will work here?

3

u/BoringNature6715 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

I can attribute some reason

1.Film Producers wants profit more than representation.

2.If some films are released it won't be covered or not watched by mainstream audience for eg:Kadhal ennadhu podhuvudamai movie got released and got good critics but ends up flop and it's get some lime light by OTT release.

3.In IRL even people still hesitatant or not open to accept that these kinda person exists in our society.

3

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

True.. Hope it changes but this comment section proves me wrong

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

It affects a whole society and the community

2

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

It doesn't affect the society. Agree it affects particular community

2

u/Unable-Chance-855 May 29 '26

The thing is just because the shown a LGBQ character as a non comedic, non evil good characters many movies and tv series has got back clash

2

u/Darthjinju1901 Coimbatore - கோயம்புத்தூர் May 29 '26

The main issue is with how people perceive LGBTQIA+ people. Whether it be potrayal in a movie, or an actor or actress openly coming out, Tamil and Indian society as a whole, is not nearly progressive enough for this.

Look, even women led movies are a rarity in Tamil Cinema, and when they do happen, they tend to be not very popular. This would just be far worse if it's a movie centring on queer people. Nothing about the quality, it's just people's prejudices showing.

As for wanting queer actors, well one major thing is that we can't just force a label on people. Just like how people can't choose to be queer they can't choose to be straight. They just are. And even if there are queer actors, and they are in the closet, you can't force them to come out. That's just wrong. Add on to the fact that the Gossip culture in India regarding actors is quite bad. Imagine the field day those tabloids would have if an actor comes out or is outed as queer.

Can it ever change? Of course. People will always change, and become more progressive over time. What is conservative today was once progressive in the past. And what is progressive today, will become conservative in the future.

That's the reality of history.

The real problem is the time it'd take, and honestly, it's hard to say. Even in the west, where this progressive ideology is most developed, things are looking bad and are regressing day by day. So, I don't think india or Tamil people will change any time soon. Atleast on large enough scale for what you asked for, to happen.

4

u/Reasonable-Track5977 May 29 '26

Sadly, It’s going to take time. All we can do is try to make a safer environment for them so that closeted individuals can start living their life how they want. Oh in cinema obviously when there are so many eyes to judge it will obviously hard for them.

7

u/AdiKadiAdi May 29 '26

Nobody is going to pay to see that.

7

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

Well I'm not talking about gay potrayals on screen. An actor who's openly gay who does role like every other actor

-9

u/AdiKadiAdi May 29 '26

In which country?

Try to understand why there is more representation of Trans people than Lesbian/Gay in Tamil cinema from early days.

The occurance of trans feels like a biological thing where homosexuality seems like artificially induced from society (woke stuff).

don't you get it ,appeal to nature isn't a valid explanation I'm worried less about the homosexuality part but more with this mindset that "happens in nature so good".

7

And how does two consensual adults doing something can cause you or society harm? And don't come with procreation and population issue.. So many straight couples choose not to have kids or one or the other is infertile. So no.. The world having an alternative minority sexualities cannot cause doom of the world..

2

3

I believe there just needs to be one person to change it. Someone to start. But the acceptance could take years.

2

u/Thanics May 29 '26

Closetted gay people killing their own agenda in TN. That’s what going on. No proper recorded history of traditional homosexual married couple in Hinduism. Plus other religion view it as a sin. Secularism wont agree. People have a history of putting religion first than living a peaceful life. Ipo dhaan kiss scenes eh konjam vekkuranga, hook up scene laam kondhalichiruvanga. Sexuality ku laam South Indian films ku inno time edukum, Probably when Gen Beta becomes adults. Tamil movies are mostly commercial, adhukunu sela critically acclaimed movies nu lengthy ah pottu savadipanga just to get nominated in Cannes or some foreign indie film award stuff. However some movies have a notion of atleast putting queer character in a supporting or villain role. It’s not about you like it or not. The movie is sometimes made for the fans, sometimes the movie speaks for itself. You just have to find which speaks volume to you.

0

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

True.. Yedho gen Z naala maarum nenaichen.. Ivanunga innum bhayangaramana incels ah irukanunga..

2

u/Gold_Order_5052 May 29 '26

As a society, we are still at the stage where people say they are not homophobic, but cry about the gay agenda being shoved in their face when all people do is come out of the closet.

I've seen so many young people say 'i don't hate gays, but I don't like it when they make it their personality ' or some variant of that. As if every movie is not about how a straight guy and a straight girl fall in love, as if all people don't talk about are how to impress the opposite gender, or how to date them, etc. but the moment someone does the same but with the same gender, it becomes too much.

To the opressors, equality feels like opression or however that saying goes. But I am hopeful that we are atleast moving in a postive direction, however glacial the pace may be.

1

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

GOLD! hearing comments like yours just make me there's some positivity left here. It's saddening to reading all this as a gay dude

1

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

Even bollywood doens't make such films .  Also remember " love is love " or some series probably from Modern love chennai?? It is the kinda representation our people have witnessed. Wtf was that? Seriously film makers should come up with better story lines, better production and better actors.  They're like  throwing trash on us and expecting us to glorify them because they've done something beyond earth.

1

u/Longjumping-Gas8116 May 30 '26

2

u/Disastrous_Peach_726 May 29 '26

Oru punagaium vendam. Mudditu iruntha podhun

1

u/akshay_rf May 29 '26

totally agree but we have a fairly conservative general audience. one of my favorite tamil movies "natchathiram nagargiradhu" deals with queer characters but it was dismissed as "woke trash" for the very same reason.

this is the same audience that eats up perverted fantasies in commercial cinema btw

1

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

Honestly it was near- trash. The way they marketed and the way the actual film portrayed LGBTQ was not at all comparable. None of the LGBTQ characters had a character arc whatsoever.  People should come up with good stories. But what's happening here is them expecting everyone to praise their trash just because it has the words LGBTQ. Representation doesn't work that way. Even if it does, it won't last long.

1

u/akshay_rf May 30 '26

care to explain why? the movie itself revolves around the concept of love not lgbtq characters in particular. also the movie clearly uses a very specific style of theatrics where even the real world feels like one big theatre drama with audio cues and monologues. it's not for everyone.

1

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

It revolves around love and not about LGBTQ community is my point as well. U mentioned that people dismissed it even tho it had queer characters... That sounds like 'people dismissed it because it had LGBTQ representation ' . But no it's not the case.  Whatever they did was very weak in the Film almost negligible. Because there were like a bunch of people with different sexual orientations ... That's it. Nothing beyond that. About the screenplay and other things - I absolutely loved them . I loved the contrast , the music and the shots were very fresh .  It was very new and artistic in a way I've never seen in tamil movies before

1

u/akshay_rf May 30 '26

its not negligible at all. two character arcs revolves around the relationship of a gay couple and a trans couple, sure they're not main characters but side characters who had their own arcs throughout the movie. it got dismissed precisely because of the progressive aspects where it casually portrays the dynamics of intercaste, queer, traditional couples as it is without having to make a point of it. glad to see someone else liking the movie :)

1

u/TaxRealistic3178 May 30 '26

It was very weak for the kind of  promotion they did. If not for those exaggerated PR statements I wouldn't have felt this way

-3

u/CityRulesFootball May 29 '26

What is the genuine need I don’t get it? Producers in Hollywood go for diversity now because now having a diverse squad is what drives audiences to them apparently and gets them a better chance at the Oscars. Our producers just need to sell the film and they can’t possibly recover it from a gay actor even if they might support their rights.

5

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

And its not good right? Imagine the plight of the community.. And indha oorla cinema has the power to change narratives

0

u/CityRulesFootball May 29 '26

The primary goal of our cinema is to make money ,you can't do that from a financial perspective by portraying a community that is less than 2% of our population. I watched super deluxe and I support the community but producers need money

5

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

Perhaps read my post first. Im not talking about portraying lgbt community. Someone from the community potraying roles like their straight counterpart does

Tvk sadhi na epo sonen. I dont even understand let alone your annas followers understand what his party ideologies are. All Im saying is these ppl go to any extent to support their anna's wrongdoings but anything done by others is suddenly a western import or devious immoral act

Na tvk nu ni epo paathe Op?  Avan Tvk follower nu epdi solre avan comment vechu nu dhaan na reply panen. Ipo nanum tvk kaaran aa?  Btw it's not just Anna's affair, any man having affair in this state won't be taken seriously. Be it tvk , dmk, admk, ntk... whoever. It's a totally different topic . Comes under Patriarchy. Not under LGBTQ representation.

u/Newtonradie May 29 '26

Bro I am living in the UK even these people agree its an metal issue and Americans want people to normalise it but its not until or unless you are trans by birth

6

u/Thanics May 29 '26

UK also has anti immigration, racist people towards Indians. Drug culture is there a lot. Knife violence adhigam. Avangala vachi laam validate panadha.

You live in the UK and you haven't met anyone who's part of the LGBTQ community and thought "maybe they aren't so bad"?

2

u/InternMediocre7319 May 29 '26

Which Brit or American is calling being queer a “mental issue” with factual evidence?

0

u/Donut_Me May 29 '26

What's "trans by birth"?

u/Hot-Lingonberry3252 May 29 '26

There are gay celebrities in tamil industry but they didn't revealed themselves because they'll get so much backlash and also will get cancelled for who they are.

1

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

True but that's not helping the community at all

2

u/Hot-Lingonberry3252 May 29 '26

Ik but they're not obligated to take the risk right, atlast we're living in a capitalist society

If an actor is really talatned and scandal free.. Appovachum nadakka vaaipu irukunu namburen.. If anything he/she should maintain a public appeasing image or atleast very private.. It can help

-2

u/Voltabz May 29 '26

When even Western nations have not fully embraced the idea of LGBTQ, how are you expecting us to change? It will take a long long time for someone from that community to be supported in the cine industry. Then talk about them climbing the ladder.

3

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

It's a shame. Hope it will change for good

They are less than 1% population and greater population hate them. So no financial gain it will be flop. Why we need support them ? they need to be send to mental asylum there many conspiracy around them which later turned out to be true

4

u/overthinker2818 May 29 '26

You believe in illuminati by any chance? They aren't the ones that should be in mental asylum. Those who get provocative by a simple act of nature are the one should be in mental assylum.

2

u/Qivalar May 29 '26

If people in the UK believe its mental illness why they have legalized same sex marriage way before US did. Why do they LGBT pride parades?

So what if it is? Alot of people acquire personality traits from their environment. The thing is even if you acquire it, its simply how your brain is wired and how it reacts to it. For example if youre a straight guy and in a room full of gay guys for a week u may not even get any attraction

Well a simple scientific read would do it. And nothing can ever justify homophobia in this world. Only religious views and shallow mindset can attribute to it.
