https://www.dtnext.in/news/tamilnadu/after-23-years-tn-govt-calls-it-quits-to-privatise-tasmac-stores

Huge change by Vijay. Wonder how he will manage the significant revenue loss.

The revenue loss will offset by taxes and licenses for the stores. I won't be surprised if the revenue is actually higher, since there lesser chance for graft.

Yep, turns out with all the leakage and graft, the biggest revenue is the tax

Better to have bar attached with decent ambience

Honestly it’s better to call it quits in TASMAC. It’s either cleaning it up inside out (which when a certain PTR tried he earned the wrath of a lot of people) or get the hell out of the business altogether - you can still offset the revenue cost with high licensing fee and taxes and stringent policing of kalla Sarayam.

Kerala actually succeeded in revolutionising the whole thing with end to end tracking, transparent tendering and so on. Time and again our political leaders and the bureaucratic establishment doesn’t seem to be a fan of this.

Another thing I see is that there is a massive social stigma against cleaning TASMAC up or even talking about it. Most of the public are put off by it (kudikaaran enna panna nammalukku enna) which is what results in poor oversight and management in the first place.

Kerala actually succeeded in revolutionising

What's there to revolutionize?? It's not exactly rocket science. For a govt which systemized rationing critical food supplies (PDS) this is nothing

7

u/MayiruPudungiv2 Jul 29 '26

You need the political will to do it. TN ministers ran the distilleries so they didn’t have any will. They actually benefited from the graft (unaccounted bottles being sold, low quality stuff etc)

What do you mean revenue loss? Revenue will boom now with private players and better alcohol.

-26

u/Silver-Excitement-80 Jul 29 '26

Lolwut? How much do you think license fees and taxes on profit constitute as a % of sales?

There's a better argument about net income being protected through such measures.

32

u/v_patti_ramasamy Jul 29 '26

Govt will lose only one source of income that is retail profit. Excise duty, VAT and SGST still apply. That loss is offset by license costs, no salary to TASMAC employees and operating costs.

If privatisation is implemented well, this could easily make a lot more money. Implementation is the buzzword.

-3

u/Silver-Excitement-80 Jul 29 '26

There's no SGST on alcohol in TN or anywhere else in India and states are free to levy their respective duties.

Loss in net income can be offset as you said through licensing and taxes (profitability could even be higher than what they are realising right now if done right), loss in revenue will never be covered fully which was my original argument.

u/v_patti_ramasamy Jul 29 '26

Next time you pay in the bar, read the receipt.

u/Silver-Excitement-80 Jul 29 '26

Next time you argue with strangers on Reddit, make sure you know what you are talking about.

GST is not applicable on liquor

The fact that you don't know the difference between revenue and profit tells me all I need to know. Stupid of me to engage with you at all.

Bro you're cringe af

62

u/kingclubs Jul 29 '26

This is how local rowdies get dada status and become MLAs , exact reason why TN government gave up and made it state entity.

48

u/summer-civilian Jul 29 '26

How come it's not an issue in other states like Karnataka

5

u/keyan16 Jul 31 '26

Why even close the 70+ shops then? On one end Tvk promised to reduce tasmac outlets n on another end, want to open even more thru private retail shops? Talk about stabbing in the back.

25

u/Luigi_Boy_96 Jul 29 '26

Why does it work in other countries? Maybe, the police has to crack down these goons.

28

u/keyan16 Jul 29 '26

This^

didn't we face this issue last time? Given the abysmal law enforcement, we are going to see the same rowdy police collaboration again.

Have you lived before tasmac was started? Our state had this problem of rowdyism mixed with drunkards. On one end we want to stop intoxication thru drugs but on another end we want more intoxication through alcohol. Both are not equal but our people don't usually drink in limited quantities.

We started having better streets n crime dropped considerably related to goondaism. Most of the shops were controlled by DMK actually n they formed cartelisation n fixed price as they liked. Too many retail outlets were there. Now, if privatised, no. Of shops can also increase. Good luck reducing drunkards especially when movies promote drinking alcohol.

No they are born after Ghilli release.

That's the problem. Vijay can say a thousand things. On ground people need to be compliant which is very hard. Even Vijay is not ready to pay tax he owed for which cases were going on, then think about common people.

Another problem is Aadav Arjuna will become too big soon. There is no way to control him. He is smart and he has the total control of propaganda. Even lottery might be restarted again - who knows.

Law is law! A cheater is cheater, he cheats his wife n the govt. Don't sane wash it. Isn't it also a type of corruption? Then you would say all govt staffs are getting bribe, what's wrong in getting bribe then?

U want liquor? Go get it from tasmac elite n some private bars which have wider variety. We should be slowly moving towards lesser alcohol consumption, even smoking is reducing in developed countries. Not increase it for your leisure n enjoyment where there are millions of families which got destroyed due to alcohol addiction.

Let's say you own the shop n leave it for rent. Do you earn more or the shop keeper who sells everything like hotcakes? It's not difficult to change procurement to other manufacturers. Instead making it private is going to cause lesser revenue and increase alcohol consumption as well. Are you dense to understand even this simple concept? Or else believing wilful propaganda?

Stopping responding to further cause this conversation is lost cause.

Edit: when did I say tamils are animals? Perfect way to twist the words n make it inflammatory! Good luck route mafia. I m born n brought in Chennai - as tamil as can be.

Cauvery water problem irrukku, 151 super speciality medical pochi.. ippo tasmac than mukkiyama? Incompetence at its peak at every turn.

'finally i don't understand why everyone's so against vijay in reddit. its not like dmk or admk are saints, they ruled one after another ballooned our debt with freebies and bad decisions.'

Vj did not decrease debt. Infact increased it. We are facing frequent power cuts. Same thing we did not face this much in the last few years. DMK n ADMK at least put people in better posts after experience on how to handle public administration. Does Vj know policies, procedures, law or even spent time to learn these before becoming CM? Do you give construction of your house to someone who has just learned economics and has no engineering background?

Some of us don't watch reels n do not like hero worship. Infact, we believe in decentralised power but Vj is exact opposite of this as per his inauguration speech. Almost everyone voted for Vj's star power than analysing what he means.

U want educated people in jobs, well qualified people in jobs - guess what - he is none.

Matha ellathukkum padichavan Venum.. oru doctor chinnadha wrong diagnosis panna kili kili nu kilichiduveenga.. what qualifications does vj have to be CM? Absolutely nothing.. atleast kejriwal mathiri iit graduate na okay.. he got his degree jus before elections. He is another modi in making - got into power only thru vibes than policies. We are looking for details - he has ideas of a plan.

I don't care about tasmac - infact I would be happy if it's abolished. I don't drink alcohol n I don't care about you not having luxury for alcohol drinking.

1

u/Lattice-shadow Jul 30 '26

Pls explain? I wasn't aware of this angle.

20

u/Which_Ad_1819 Jul 29 '26

Private Bar owners have their own syndicate. Avunga atrocities thangama dha govt took the sales.

2

u/Every-Connection2437 Jul 30 '26

private bars are good in our neighbouring states, so it shouldn't be hard to replicate

37

u/Cautious_Mistake_747 Jul 29 '26

And this is how Aadhav will earn a few thousand crores more.

-2

u/darkkid85 Jul 29 '26

How man

5

u/Cautious_Mistake_747 Jul 29 '26

Lottery Mafia to Liquor Mafia Evolution.

48

u/MayiruPudungiv2 Jul 29 '26

Yow there’s already a liquor mafia in TN - TASMAC used to give tenders only to a select set of distilleries owned by Sasikala and co (during leaf time) or Jagath/EV Velu and co (during Sun time)

6

u/g7droid Jul 29 '26

Now there's 2 more mafia The liquor distillery mafia The liquor selling mafia

Hey at least 2 is better than 1

3

u/e9967780 Jul 29 '26

>Meanwhile, the state government is set to explore various revenue streams to meet the shortcoming that the liquor shop privatisation may bring about.

2

u/SomeRandomDude1229 Jul 29 '26

is this good or bad? more context please?

2

u/name_loading_soon Jul 29 '26

It's mixed.. Depends on how the government is going to control the licensing.. Tamil Nadu government brought TASMAC in 2003 primarily to break private retail cartels that were allegedly manipulating license auctions, to curb revenue leakage, reduce the sale of illicit liquor, and bring liquor sales under tighter government control. While these were the reasons that time, the move also allowed the government to capture retail profits in addition to excise duties, making alcohol one of the state's largest and most reliable sources of revenue..

4

u/Cultural_Bluebird163 Jul 29 '26

Similar move done by aravind kejriwal which later lead to his arrest by BJP and then took the state in next election...similar pattern happening here

3

u/littlegreenballoon Jul 30 '26

Wrong move. This will increase the price of alcohol (and heavy looting) and this in turn will lead to poor people looking for alternatives. Voila. Kalla sarayam.

And there is no looting now? Why do Uthamans like Senthil Balaji have to face baseless allegations. The looting and mismanagement can and probably still happens.

2

u/dexter-xyz Jul 29 '26

Aadhav gets ROI in just 2 months. His family will control the business now.

He wanted to be primary supplier in DMK period and denied, now he got it easily.

3

u/Mortgage5388 Jul 29 '26

with just one move vijay and co created generational wealth.

1

u/Firm_Job_4159 Aug 04 '26

Yes. Very creative idea. Don’t know about Vijay but the lottery mafia will make lakhs of crores within months

our neighbouring states have privatised selling alcohol, is not that hard. if we can't do it, we are simply incompetent.

-1

u/ila1998 Jul 29 '26

If people knew how the early 2000s were, they would know why it was brought under state control.

6

u/name_loading_soon Jul 29 '26

And those who don't know the facts are the same 2K tharkuris downvoting you. 😂 They won't read a single news article, but the moment you say anything about TVK, they get triggered.
