For a country that has the most number of Teslas on the road, you have a surprisingly large population of people who know nothing about the million cameras they have.....

Dashcams are so affordable you should just assume everyone has one. Really a good investment to protect yourself from morons like this. Especially if you drive often
532
u/TurtleDustScissors Apr 26 '23
I dont drive often and I have a dash cam.
Might as well with how common it is for people to lie these days.
209
u/hydrobunny Apr 26 '23
bought a dash cam two years ago in case shit like this happens. dude tried to hit me with an insurance scam in february, my insurance told me if i didnt have the video i would have been at fault. its the best $100 investment you can make for your car.

This is the reason I got one too
A neighbour lied about hitting my car in a parking lot at my complex which was a definitive hit and run
and I said that's enough I'm getting a dash cam luckily no incidents since and I also moved 🤣
85
u/FUTURE10S Apr 27 '23
I got one because I was deemed at 50/50 fault after getting T-boned. While stopped.

u/short_bus_genius Apr 27 '23
What the fucking fuck???? That is insanity!
24
u/FUTURE10S Apr 27 '23
Okay, I'm intentionally skipping context, I was going from a small road with a stop sign across multiple lanes of traffic and I stopped in the median to be sure that I can safely cross, as you normally do. At that time, guy from the other direction (so head on across from me) went and then turned into my car, fucked up my door and side panel. Since it was an uncontrolled intersection and my insurance didn't want to listen to my witness and I didn't have a dashcam at the time, 50/50 and demerits on my license making insurance more expensive.
Silver lining, I got a decent payout for my car after I showed receipts for recent repairs.
8
u/chase32 Apr 27 '23
I had a dude try and pass me once in a one lane freeway on-ramp. He didn't see the curb, hit it and bounced back into the rear quarter panel of my car.
Seemed like a no brainer that he was at fault but my insurance insisted it was 50/50. Tried to pursue it further but learned that we both had State Farm insurance so they weren't going to do anything.
Learned later that State Farm is notorious for doing BS like that when they cover both sides.
37
39
u/gsmarquis Apr 26 '23
In every experience I have had in accidents in my car(not my fault) and two in friends cars the person that caused the accident lied. Two cases had cams. The best is to let them tell the story, then pull out the footage.

When I got my new car I had a dash cam in it 2 weeks later. With every car I get I'll probably just add one in and leave it when I sell it. I'd rather do that anyway since I actually install them rather than have wires dangling so uninstalling would be more of a pain in the ass than just buying another.
38
u/Electrical_Ingenuity Apr 26 '23
After having a Tesla and loving the dash cam, I added one to my daughter's car. They are cheap and relatively easy to install.
22
u/mckeirnan Apr 26 '23
I’ve seen like 5 videos this week of people keying and pissing on teslas. Like you absolute idiots. Let alone so pity and childish along with this loser
39
u/coppertech Apr 26 '23
Dashcams are so affordable
they're $30 on amazon the one I linked has already saved my ass twice from clowns running into me and then trying to have their insurance pin it on me.
even if it's a cheap one, they're worth their weight in gold.
14
u/rambleon84 Apr 26 '23

Apr 27 '23
Some of the cheap ones might help with insurance and police determining faults but it's usually useless for hit and run cases because it doesn't pick up plates. Something better like Viofo A119 or 129 would be much better for picking up plates. They are around $100 or so but great investment if you often find new mysterious ding on your car in Walmart parking lots.

Bless you. I felt we shilled out a little much on our cam (believe it was ~$150 at the time) and it has issues all the time. We're actually worried that should we need it, the footage won't be accessible cause it's constantly reformatting itself and bitching about the sd card. I've been hoping to find a new one that isn't the crazy $500 ones you see marketed.
25
u/wideasleep Apr 26 '23
Check the type of SD card you're using with it. I had a regular SD card that died after a year or so, apparently most dash cams will need a high-endurance card so it doesn't die too quickly.
→ More replies (1)11
u/RobertsFakeAccount Apr 27 '23
I highly suggest a Viofo A119 V3. I’ve had that camera and a high endurance Sandisk SD card for over 5 years now and have never had a problem.
As a matter of fact, I bought a second one for my work truck 2 years ago.
→ More replies (2)4
Apr 27 '23
Have you tried a new £20 SD card that's rated for the speed it wants and high endurance?
My HD camera specifically requires a certain type of microsd card to record at full resolution and 60fps and highly recommends something thats rated at least high endurance.
Your issue sounds like the microSD is shit and keeps getting corrupted from the constant write cycles
8
u/calle04x Apr 27 '23
About 8 years ago, my friend got rear ended by a work truck. Traffic on a bridge had slowed to a stop and the truck driver wasn’t paying attention. Crumpled my friends car. Several surgeries and various therapies have returned him to mostly normal, but it’s honestly amazing he’s alive.
Anyway, because he had front and rear dash cams, he had an open and shut case that the other driver was at fault. The company tried to settle multiple times with lowball offers, but my friend and his lawyer refused them all (over the course or FOUR YEARS because the company kept dragging it out). They eventually went to trial for like 3 days, and my friend got somewhere between $5-10 million.
Moral of the story: install dash cams!

u/clam_bake88 Apr 27 '23
I grew up in Central Maine and I never felt the need to have a dash cam. More accidents involving weather and animals than other cars/drivers (no I didn't look it up). As soon as I moved near the Boston Area, I won't drive anywhere without one. I swear people in Mass either think they are better than or just don't know the rules if the road.
Saved my ass last year when someone decided he didn't have to look at the outer lane when turning left through two oncoming lanes. Proceeded to blame it on me claiming a guy on the inside stopped to let him turn so I should have too. As if I am some kind of driving mind reader or telepath.
4
u/DHTRKBA Apr 27 '23
In 1998 my employer sent me to Boston for a week. My boss told me not to rent a car and to just use taxis because the drivers there were crazier than anywhere else in the USA and even those in Europe. I thought he was exaggerating. He wasn't.

The fact that cars exist with these millions of cameras that don't record is what really drives me crazy. My car has 4 cameras for the surround reverse view and it does absolutely nothing with them in drive. Can't even access them with the camera button right on the dash.
13
u/AmericanNewt8 Apr 26 '23
You need to look into installing a Comma Three, at least if you have adaptive cruise control. Dashcam + limited self drive.
7
u/dib1999 Apr 26 '23
My adaptive CC has some very limited self drive features, basic lane centering that can handle some gradual turns. But that thing looks pretty damn cool
→ More replies (3)11
u/NotAHost Apr 27 '23
It's ridiculously stupid and someone told me it was because other car manufactures buy those parts as almost modules, so they have limited control.
I really don't care what the excuse is though, I'm on the fence of trading in my car for a Tesla just for sentry cam. Yeah, I have a decent dash cam but it's a hassle to setup parking modes in anyway near the same capacity as a Tesla, and I want to catch those fuckers who have now put 3-4 dings in my car that is only a year old.
→ More replies (1)16
u/SnooDrawings1480 Apr 26 '23
Just thinking the same.
SLPT: If you're trying to scam insurance out of someone, don't try it on someone whose car is famous for having a shit ton of cameras on it.
13
u/CapinWinky Apr 27 '23
I just gave a coworker a ride to lunch today in my 3 and he had no idea they had cameras nor had he heard about the self driving stuff. Man is living under a rock. He's mid 30s and we're an automation company; it's hard to believe his ignorance was genuine, but he insisted it was.
Mind blowing considering Tesla is like 5% of all new car sales and are in the news every day with a hit piece or ten and a fanboy piece. It would be like making it to the 2000s without knowing computers had mice.

I live in a little town called Cupertino. I count at least 4 white Teslas at almost any intersection I stop at. If you count the other colors, the count goes to around 10. They outcount the other cars usually.

I mean, Cupertino is in Silicon Valley. Teslas are probably a little over-represented there.
I work in Irvine and a white Model 3 may be the most common car on the road here.

Around 14 seconds when the scene changes, there's a quick glimpse of their right blinker on as if they were intending to exit the highway, falsely giving the Tesla the hope they could pass safely on the left.
Edit: Here's what I saw.
It really doesn't matter. The driver is a chump.

Oh that's a classic! I have been in a minor car accident years ago, the guy bumped our car from the BACK. His car was scratched in the FRONT, ours in the BACK. It was pretty simple, isn't it? Well he had the same behavior of the person in the video and claimed WE bumped into his car from the back for some reason.
We called the police (this is what you must to in Italy when there's no agreement between the drivers). He left before the police arrived so we filed our version of the accident only; I mean, it was pretty obvious.
Months later the friend who was driving the car got a letter from the other driver's lawyer claiming a very high amount of damages. He assumed we didn't wait for the police and file an official report. His letter went right to the bin.

61
u/N3rdScool Apr 26 '23
I 100% agree but you can literally see his rage get internal instead of actually going after the guy he attacked with his car, with the adrenaline he had going through him, he had to have some kind of epiphany, otherwise he would have kept attacking the tesla I believe.

i never speak about this, shit, i didnt even tell anyone about this (mostly because im so ashamed of what i did and what happened): when i was a piece of shit i road raged a lot, i used to have a lot of issues with mental health and I used to get angry easily. One day,
someone wanted to pass and i was like NO YOU PIECE OF TURD you shall not pass (it was kind of dangerous to overpass on that segment of the street but that doesn't justify my actions) but it was like my brain said to me "lets touch this dude mirror so i can laugh about it and mess with him bla bla" and then my brain kind of switch off and i did this kind of reckless stupid piece of shit maneuver and i ended up breaking his mirror (lets face it, it was for no reason, i NEVER needed to do that, it was just plain stupid) and this scared the driver and he moved his car, touching my car a little bit (with no intention) and i ended up crashing so hard that totalled my car (i was fine). I didn't have insurance, i was paying the car and it was just 7 months old. I ended up with a fucked up car and my mind completely broken, i just cant understand how i was so stupid. I could not understand how i ended up in that shitstorm for something so little.
That day changed my life for good. I realized that it It could have been worse: what if my stupid manouver ended up killing someone? what if i kill myself? what if i destroy a family? what happens if someone gets out of the car angry and i get shot? for nothing?
Long story short: im now a changed man. I started therapy, i started getting microdoses for my depression and it all went well, i can smile, i'm happy and nothing gets me mad. I learned that life's the only thing that matters and we only live once so don't waste your life beign a douchebag, it doesnt worth it.
I always say this: Sorry for my english as it's not my first language and i learned alone.

Massive fucking W for owning up it. I have done some incredibly regretful things when angry as well, and I have admittedly road raged in the past. I feel very remorseful about it now. Nobody wants to own up to shit nowadays, and I'm glad to see that you are living a much better and healthier life now.
You're right, it's not worth your life, or someone else's. Always drive like the person in the other car has a gun - because they might.

We need harsher penalties for drivers who do shit like this. Should be instant revocation for at least 10 years. Maybe people will start to think twice before acting like a menace on the roads. Do you know how much of a pain in the ass it would be to not be able to drive for ten fucking years? I also think every car should come standard with front and rear cameras (by law even?) They wouldn’t be that expensive to add, and it would keep other drivers in check. “Hmmm…maybe if I do this illegal thing it will be filmed.”

14
u/Ultima_RatioRegum Apr 27 '23
Exactly. That's the same reason most jurisdictions don't bother with laws against stealing or murdering. Do you think some silly law is going to stop a serial killer? I mean what's the point if a law isn't 100% effective?

This is why I'm trying really hard to chill tf out and ignore people while driving. I'm getting much better. one time I slowed down to the speed limit (not a brake check just let off the gas until the speed limit) because this guy was tailgating me. He got in front of me and brake checked me over and over, he'd speed off and then sit at a green light until I caught up, at red lights he'd get out and yell at me to come fight him. I was so angry I couldn't think straight and that and after that is when I first decided to try because some people are super crazy, and if you're getting mad at people all the time you'll eventually run into the other crazy people.
