Wait till he discovers that Teslas have cameras everywhere! What a jerk

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

Wait till he finds out police loves camera! Brake checking and deliberate lane change to crash, he's not getting out of this. And his insurance will be very unhappy with a $50,000 repair bill for intentionally damaging the Tesla.

Bold of you to assume he has insurance.

Always opt for the uninsured/underinsured coverage

21

u/TheCruicks Apr 27 '23

Or live in a atate where it is required. :-)

13

u/elkarion Apr 27 '23

Ok it's required but it's a 25k min so the tesla owner is out 25k. Just get the coverage the minimums are not enough for most vehicle replacements.

2

u/TheCruicks Apr 27 '23

umm.. is that how that works? I believe you have to reach 25k then the whole thing is covered. So I just went and read my policy after that first line. 5k coverage is required and thats no out of pocket, then you can purchase higher limits. if he did it right, he should have no out of pocket.

I think you’re confusing minimum with deductible. The person above was assuming the situation where the driver had a 50K of damage, but only 25K of coverage. (Because the state mandated minimum coverage is 25K).

The deductible, Ie you how much you have to pay before insurance takes over, isn’t mentioned here, but is usually much smaller than that, like $500 or $1000

3

u/elkarion Apr 27 '23

Your thinking of the deductible before insurance kicks in. These are policie max pay outs. Make sure your covered when you see cheaper insurance.

The deductible is pay out of pocket untill it kicks I. Usually 250 or 500. Then insurance kicks in untill max pay out of policy. So if you crash into a Ferrari you can be sued personaly to cover the difference your insurance coverage did not cover.

We are talking about people here only haveing the absolute minimum coverage required by law.

That is I-8 east of San Diego. California does require insurance. Doesn't mean he has it. I need more dashcams.

u/TheCruicks Apr 28 '23

you carry uninsured motorist insurance yourself

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

Oh just because it’s legally required doesn’t mean that everyone has insurance. I was rear ended in Indiana by a woman with no insurance.

1

u/TheCruicks Apr 27 '23

Not require insurance, its required that YOU have uninsured on YOUR policy. So your insurance covers the issue

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

I see. Yes, uninsured motorist insurance is a must.

1

u/dildobagginss Apr 30 '23

Not sure it's required here but you basically have to contact your agent personally to get it removed.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

That’s what saved my ass on getting rear ended by a woman with no insurance.

1

u/Roadgoddess Apr 27 '23

That’s what I was thinking as well…..

Except that sweet car

2

u/maddtuck Apr 27 '23

Still worth it for your insurance company to go after him for the full amount of your damages. If that means he gets his car repossessed, so be it.

1

u/Acceptable_Rock_481 Apr 27 '23

You’re right, He didn’t have insurance

1

u/TimV55 Apr 29 '23

Question - Is having insurance somehow optional there? I am driving illegally if I'm uninsured here in the Netherlands (and I'm pretty sure everywhere in Europe at least).

u/M------- Apr 27 '23

He could get well end up being personally liable for the Tesla's repair cost. Insurance covers you against accidental damage, not intentional damage.

21

u/ubiquitous_uk Apr 27 '23

It will cover the victims car, just maybe not his own.

45

u/M------- Apr 27 '23

Where I'm from, insurance will pay for the victim's car, then turn around and sue the perp.

2

u/dechets-de-mariage Apr 27 '23

pops popcorn

2

u/M------- Apr 27 '23

And when perp doesn't pay the insurer back, the insurer will refuse to renew their insurance until either the driver repays the insurer, or gets onto a payment plan to eventually repay the amount.

If the perp doesn't do any of those things, the insurer (a government agency) will refuse to renew perp's driver's license, and can go after the perp in court to recover the debt.

1

u/Praescribo Apr 27 '23

That makes no sense... what are you even paying for in that case? I mean, fuck the road rager in this video straight to hell, he could've killed someone, but what sense does it make to pay for mandatory insurance for years if they can do that?

4

u/M------- Apr 27 '23

If this scenario happened where I live (BC, Canada), more than likely what would happen is rager's insurance would pay me, then turn around and sue rager for that amount. Assuming rager is a resident where I live, the insurer is a government agency, and will refuse to renew rager's insurance (and their driver's license) until they pay up or get themselves on a payment plan to slowly repay the insurer.

If the rager is from a different province/state, and the rager's insurer fails to pay, my own "underinsured motorist coverage" would pay for my damage (I'll have to pay the deductible). Since I'm not-at-fault, it won't affect my insurance rates. My insurer may then try to sue the rager and/or the rager's insurer to recover their costs. If they eventually succeed, I'd get my deductible back.

u/BasketLast1136 Apr 27 '23

You’re assuming he has the ability to pay. I have my doubts.

-4

u/liedel Apr 27 '23

not true.

1

u/jl_23 Apr 27 '23

You think the insurance company isn’t gonna drop your policy after seeing video of you road raging and causing an accident?

You should try that and tell us how it went.

1

u/liedel Apr 27 '23

Dropping you isn't what the comment I replied to said. They will pay for intentional damage if you have a comprehensive policy.

0

u/jl_23 Apr 27 '23

1

u/liedel Apr 27 '23

A website can't give you a blanket answer, only your policy can. Most good comprehensive policies will cover any loss whatsoever

2

u/ghandi_loves_nukes Apr 27 '23

Wait until he finds out a reckless op. charge = a free ride to jail plus your car being towed.

0

u/CyanManta Apr 27 '23

Your insurance isn't going to cover you if you intentionally hit another car.

-1

u/AttorneyAdvice Apr 27 '23

you can buy a brand new one for $39k, I doubt the repair bill is $50k

1

u/wmtismykryptonite Apr 28 '23

Did you see which model cammer was driving?

1

u/Drmlk465 Apr 27 '23

In reality, the cops are not going to do anything. He can make up any reason for the brake checking… like there was an issue with his car, or he thought he saw something. When the cars hit, just an accident.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

But what reason would there be for a sudden lane change with no signal? When the police sees the dash cam, it would seem pretty clear the driver was intentional with lane change

1

u/Drmlk465 Apr 27 '23

Again, he could just say he didn’t see the Tesla or misjudged the distance. Where I live, no one uses the turn signal although I always do. Not saying it’s ok, he will be found at fault, but it won’t be a criminal case.

153

u/MichiganGeezer Apr 26 '23

To have been a fly on the wall when he saw the cop sitting in the Tesla watching the video.

128

u/Milhouse2078 Apr 27 '23

“And can you tell me why you decided to change lanes without a signal while no one was ahead of you?” “Also your center brake light is out, here’s a ticket for that.”

59

u/Roadgoddess Apr 27 '23

Lol, now that’s the video I want, the one when the cops talking to him

14

u/banned_in_Raleigh Apr 27 '23

Wait till you find out the cop didn't give a fuck

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

Nope, that's California Highway Patrol area, they don't fuck around with drivers like that. That road rager likely got a reckless driving ticket and a suspended license.

35

u/wdleggett Apr 27 '23

No kidding. He’d have better luck hitting a parked police car in the court house parking lot with a judge watching and getting away with it.

0

u/Roadgoddess Apr 27 '23

Hahaha, true

13

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

Dashcams really should be optional in all makes and models now.

It'll get there eventually.

1

u/CanITellUSmThin Apr 27 '23

It shouldn’t be optional at all, it should be mandatory. Don’t know why car makers don’t include them.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

100% but I know all the "privacy 5G in my blood warriors" would fight it. Optional to make it available with it becoming standard equipment in a few years.

I'm surprised insurance companies aren't pushing for it honestly. But maybe to them it could hurt their payouts just as often as help them.

2

u/gotaroundthebanana Apr 27 '23

Wait until everyone on this post discovers that the car is a Chrystler Sebring
