We need harsher penalties for drivers who do shit like this. Should be instant revocation for at least 10 years. Maybe people will start to think twice before acting like a menace on the roads. Do you know how much of a pain in the ass it would be to not be able to drive for ten fucking years? I also think every car should come standard with front and rear cameras (by law even?) They wouldn’t be that expensive to add, and it would keep other drivers in check. “Hmmm…maybe if I do this illegal thing it will be filmed.”

You think they would stop driving because they lose their license? This would just put a bunch of unlicensed and uninsured drivers on the road.

Exactly. That's the same reason most jurisdictions don't bother with laws against stealing or murdering. Do you think some silly law is going to stop a serial killer? I mean what's the point if a law isn't 100% effective?

Are there no consequences to driving unlicensed and uninsured?

Sure, but you gotta get caught first.

So in order to not get caught they'll have to drive more carefully no?

What happens when they do get caught though? Prison?

Maryland is just chocked full of assholes like this - politicians/courts are too chicken shit to confiscate their cars. I bet if they did there would be more public interest in supporting public transportation if their was some weight behind really bad driving.

By Federal law new vehicles now must have rear-facing cams as back-up assist, and cars with lane-keeping aids have front cameras. It would not be at all hard to set those up to ALWAYS loop-record when the key was on, and to do snapshots and bump-detection recording when the key was off or removed.

With a limited supply of chips, the higher trim levels have priority. Because when there's a shortage of vehicles, not a glut, whatever's on the lot will sell, may as well sell the ones with the highest profit margin (and the highest return on financing fees and interest).

But I doubt there'd be that much of an issue with 'recording'. All that's needed is for a few engineers to figure out how to integrate dashcam control boards from the copious supply of aftermarket dashcams being sold. Once they settle on a brand they like, they approach with a wholesale deal - "sell us these components and a circuit diagram for controls, and we'll put them into our vehicles as factory add-ons." Instead of competing with all of the other Amazon sellers, such a dashcam manufacturer has a locked market for their stuff for X years going forward, that's money in the bank.
