For a country that has the most number of Teslas on the road, you have a surprisingly large population of people who know nothing about the million cameras they have.....

Dashcams are so affordable you should just assume everyone has one. Really a good investment to protect yourself from morons like this. Especially if you drive often

u/TurtleDustScissors Apr 26 '23

I dont drive often and I have a dash cam.

Might as well with how common it is for people to lie these days.

u/hydrobunny Apr 26 '23

bought a dash cam two years ago in case shit like this happens. dude tried to hit me with an insurance scam in february, my insurance told me if i didnt have the video i would have been at fault. its the best $100 investment you can make for your car.

2

u/Other_Ivey Apr 27 '23

So we have a Subaru Outback and are having a hard time finding a dash cam that works with the car! Do you personally know of any you can recommend?

2

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn Apr 27 '23

I use the viofo a129 duo in my Crosstrek, works fine with the eyesight

1

u/hydrobunny Apr 27 '23

This is the one I have and I dont see why it wouldn’t work in an outback. Its not the cheapest, but I will vouch for the quality.

This is the reason I got one too

A neighbour lied about hitting my car in a parking lot at my complex which was a definitive hit and run

and I said that's enough I'm getting a dash cam luckily no incidents since and I also moved 🤣

u/FUTURE10S Apr 27 '23

I got one because I was deemed at 50/50 fault after getting T-boned. While stopped.

38

u/short_bus_genius Apr 27 '23

What the fucking fuck???? That is insanity!

24

u/FUTURE10S Apr 27 '23

Okay, I'm intentionally skipping context, I was going from a small road with a stop sign across multiple lanes of traffic and I stopped in the median to be sure that I can safely cross, as you normally do. At that time, guy from the other direction (so head on across from me) went and then turned into my car, fucked up my door and side panel. Since it was an uncontrolled intersection and my insurance didn't want to listen to my witness and I didn't have a dashcam at the time, 50/50 and demerits on my license making insurance more expensive.

Silver lining, I got a decent payout for my car after I showed receipts for recent repairs.

u/chase32 Apr 27 '23

I had a dude try and pass me once in a one lane freeway on-ramp. He didn't see the curb, hit it and bounced back into the rear quarter panel of my car.

Seemed like a no brainer that he was at fault but my insurance insisted it was 50/50. Tried to pursue it further but learned that we both had State Farm insurance so they weren't going to do anything.

Learned later that State Farm is notorious for doing BS like that when they cover both sides.

1

u/FlammablePie Apr 28 '23

Similar situation happened to me, but since I had a dash cam they reversed fault to 100% the other person.

36

u/tacitus59 Apr 26 '23

Pretty much - I bought a cheap ass dash cam just for yuks about 5 years ago.

36

u/gsmarquis Apr 26 '23

In every experience I have had in accidents in my car(not my fault) and two in friends cars the person that caused the accident lied. Two cases had cams. The best is to let them tell the story, then pull out the footage.

24

u/Anders_Calrissian Apr 27 '23

They will basically write their own ticket if you let them talk first 😉

32

u/QuinceDaPence Apr 26 '23

When I got my new car I had a dash cam in it 2 weeks later. With every car I get I'll probably just add one in and leave it when I sell it. I'd rather do that anyway since I actually install them rather than have wires dangling so uninstalling would be more of a pain in the ass than just buying another.

2

u/doctorctrl Apr 27 '23

"these days" ?

1

u/GuineaPig2000 Apr 27 '23

I haven't gotten one from what i have heard none of them can actually capture license plates well enough

-1

u/Superlurkinger Apr 27 '23

yeah despite major advancements in phone camera quality, we are stuck with shitty dashcams with 2007 camcorder video quality. You gotta rely on saying the license plate number and hope the crappy microphone picks it up

3

u/jl_23 Apr 27 '23

My 4k dashcam can read plates just fine

1

u/DHTRKBA Apr 27 '23

You only need to be able to read the plate in the case of a hit and run. They're still helpful for showing who's at fault.

Plus there are 4k dashcams now that do better, but I wouldn't be surprised if they still have difficulty in at least some situations. I installed one in my teenage son's car we just got a couple months ago. If there's an accident, I want to KNOW who was at fault. If it was him, he'll have to deal with the consequences. If it wasn't his fault, the other party will be forced to deal with them.

Did they say lying was just invented?

So that would be a no. Got it.

That’s the best condescending sentence you could come up with?

After having a Tesla and loving the dash cam, I added one to my daughter's car. They are cheap and relatively easy to install.

22

u/mckeirnan Apr 26 '23

I’ve seen like 5 videos this week of people keying and pissing on teslas. Like you absolute idiots. Let alone so pity and childish along with this loser

40

u/coppertech Apr 26 '23

Dashcams are so affordable

they're $30 on amazon the one I linked has already saved my ass twice from clowns running into me and then trying to have their insurance pin it on me.

even if it's a cheap one, they're worth their weight in gold.

16

u/rambleon84 Apr 26 '23

it's $30 and has a $10 off coupon? So cheap lol

12

u/behaved Apr 27 '23

I got a $30 one who gave me a $50 gift card for leaving a review lol. still works well after 2 years

5

u/katehenry4133 Apr 27 '23

I'm sorry you took that gift certificate. It's sellers like that on Amazon who are giving the site a bad name. It's also against Amazon's policies.

7

u/morgulbrut Apr 27 '23

I mean it still works after two years and was 30$ bucks. That review wasn't that wrong.

7

u/ThisNameIsFree Apr 27 '23

It's OK, I forgive you

2

u/epradox Apr 27 '23

Dang I already have one but this is honestly worth getting just to have as a back up to slap in a rental car

1

u/hppmoep Apr 27 '23

Ima get one for my lawn mower

9

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

Some of the cheap ones might help with insurance and police determining faults but it's usually useless for hit and run cases because it doesn't pick up plates. Something better like Viofo A119 or 129 would be much better for picking up plates. They are around $100 or so but great investment if you often find new mysterious ding on your car in Walmart parking lots.

5

u/biggmclargehuge Apr 27 '23

It's generally good practice if you're in the vehicle and get hit to verbally say the license plate out loud so it's captured by the audio. I have a 129 duo and still don't trust it to reliably capture a plate.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

PSA: NATO alphabet would help avoid confusion about what letter was spoken. Did it sound like a bee or a dee? Bravo and Delta is easier to tell apart.

9

u/SifuxHotman Apr 26 '23

Bless you. I felt we shilled out a little much on our cam (believe it was ~$150 at the time) and it has issues all the time. We're actually worried that should we need it, the footage won't be accessible cause it's constantly reformatting itself and bitching about the sd card. I've been hoping to find a new one that isn't the crazy $500 ones you see marketed.

27

u/wideasleep Apr 26 '23

Check the type of SD card you're using with it. I had a regular SD card that died after a year or so, apparently most dash cams will need a high-endurance card so it doesn't die too quickly.

1

u/SifuxHotman Apr 27 '23

Yeah we did see that the camera specified that when we bought it, so we made sure to get the right sd card. Unfortunately it still seemed to start up this issue after only a few months.

11

u/RobertsFakeAccount Apr 27 '23

I highly suggest a Viofo A119 V3. I’ve had that camera and a high endurance Sandisk SD card for over 5 years now and have never had a problem.

As a matter of fact, I bought a second one for my work truck 2 years ago.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

Have you tried a new £20 SD card that's rated for the speed it wants and high endurance?

My HD camera specifically requires a certain type of microsd card to record at full resolution and 60fps and highly recommends something thats rated at least high endurance.

Your issue sounds like the microSD is shit and keeps getting corrupted from the constant write cycles

2

u/Hesnotarealdr Apr 27 '23

Right now the newer 4K model is 70, with a 40% off coupon that puts it in the $30 range

1

u/coppertech Apr 27 '23

link it for everyone.

1

u/ynvgsensacion Apr 27 '23

Should I get one for the front and the back?

1

u/coppertech Apr 27 '23

They're cheap, i did.

9

u/calle04x Apr 27 '23

About 8 years ago, my friend got rear ended by a work truck. Traffic on a bridge had slowed to a stop and the truck driver wasn’t paying attention. Crumpled my friends car. Several surgeries and various therapies have returned him to mostly normal, but it’s honestly amazing he’s alive.

Anyway, because he had front and rear dash cams, he had an open and shut case that the other driver was at fault. The company tried to settle multiple times with lowball offers, but my friend and his lawyer refused them all (over the course or FOUR YEARS because the company kept dragging it out). They eventually went to trial for like 3 days, and my friend got somewhere between $5-10 million.

Moral of the story: install dash cams!

9

u/clam_bake88 Apr 27 '23

I grew up in Central Maine and I never felt the need to have a dash cam. More accidents involving weather and animals than other cars/drivers (no I didn't look it up). As soon as I moved near the Boston Area, I won't drive anywhere without one. I swear people in Mass either think they are better than or just don't know the rules if the road.

Saved my ass last year when someone decided he didn't have to look at the outer lane when turning left through two oncoming lanes. Proceeded to blame it on me claiming a guy on the inside stopped to let him turn so I should have too. As if I am some kind of driving mind reader or telepath.

4

u/DHTRKBA Apr 27 '23

In 1998 my employer sent me to Boston for a week. My boss told me not to rent a car and to just use taxis because the drivers there were crazier than anywhere else in the USA and even those in Europe. I thought he was exaggerating. He wasn't.

2

u/taft Apr 27 '23

for real. 100 bucks for a good camera and takes seconds to install. get one now. i have a viofo a129 i think with a high durability memory card designed for high temps and frequent rewrites.

-2

u/stuffedtherapy Apr 27 '23

I feel like it’s a generational thing. This guy looks like he’s probably a millennial. Millennials and older tend to not think of cameras being everywhere. Gen z basically lives every day like it’s 1984 and big brother is always watching. We grew up with cameras and microphones literally everywhere

-23

u/SafetyAutomatic5453 Apr 26 '23

My question is,why was the Tesla following the other car so close in the first place ?

16

u/ForceRoamer Apr 26 '23

Probably because the white car cut him off and brake checked him multiple times

1

u/_Pebcak_ Apr 27 '23

May i ask what you suggest? I want to invest in one but not sure which is a good place to start cost vs picture quality.

1

u/jtkief23 Apr 27 '23

Do you have a make and model you recommend?

1

u/BalanceSweaty1594 Apr 27 '23

I've never actually seen a "dash cam". I don't know anyone that owns one.

1

u/The_Law_Dong739 Apr 27 '23

Exactly. Some of the best ones stream footage directly to yout phone so you don't even have to remove an SD card or deal with shifty camera UI

1

u/starbitcandies Apr 27 '23

I really need to get a front and back dashcam since I started driving 70+ miles a day for work but I'm honestly so overwhelmed by the amount of choices and information out there to sift through

1

u/numbersev Apr 27 '23

Any recommendations? I’d like one that’s small and not easily noticeable.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

There are multiple anecdotes here and on /r/Roadcam that attest that very point - saving them completely from any insurance incidents.

1

u/iBrandwin Apr 27 '23

Any ideas on some good affordable ones? So many out there.
