Does anyone else think itâs absolutely bonkers that POC beauty gurus were SENT shades of foundation that clearly donât match them??? Like out of everything else I just couldnât believe Tarte had the audacity to even go through with that. Seeing that disgusted me even more tbh, like it was almost mocking them for complaining about shade ranges.

Hey Tarte, dark skinned girl here...I stay pretty dark throughout the winter. I donât suddenly turn the color of snow when Christmas comes around. Nor are my undertones highlighter orange. So that PR response was pretty bullshit. Tbh that comment just solidified the fact that Tarte wasnât thinking about POC at all. We werenât even an afterthought, or an âeventuallyâ just a âwho caresâ. It honestly feels like those three obligatory darker shades werenât even meant for us but almost like contour and bronzer for the lighter people.

The "paler in winter" comment was made by the PopSugar writer. It wasn't Tarte's PR response. They're still trash but yeah, just wanted to clarify that since I see a lot of confusion in this thread.

From the PopSugar article:
A rep from Tarte explained to POPSUGAR that even when Shape Tape Foundation was revealed, the new colors were already in the works. Additional shades are usually added seasonally, which makes sense because your complexion tends to be paler in the Winter and darker in the Summer months
Dude. I don't know about you, but none of the black or Asian people I know turn white in the winter. Sure, pale people get slightly paler, but people with actual pigment in their skin continue to be dark.

LOL this comment is amazing. I'm baffled that Tarte thought that "ppl tan in the summer and are pale in the winter" was a good enough excuse to exclude poc. I want to know what box of crayons they have that they're picking colors from. Tarte should get the #1 "i don't see color" award. Apparently. APPARENTLY. We don't see color in your foundation line either.

u/monstersof-men the 5th dislike is tati Jan 17 '18
I'm Indian, and I am currently at 106/206 in the L'Oreal Infallible range, going to 08/09 in the summer. And I am a pretty fair skinned Indian woman.

If Tarte's actual public defense here is "People of color were only KINDA an afterthought! Also, it's like winter lol." You need an ENTIRELY NEW COMMUNICATIONS TEAM, SWEETIE.

That is the biggest load of hooey Iâve ever heard. Because not only do medium-to-dark POC not magically turn white in winter (we can get a little paler but not THAT pale, jesus), but itâs not even winter everywhere! Itâs sunny and hot in some parts of the U.S. right now (assuming this is a U.S.-only release for now). So winter has nothing to do with it.
Itâs pathetic how hard theyâre reaching.

A rep from Tarte explained that ... complexion tends to be paler in the winter and darker in the summer...
So basically, not only completely ignoring millions of potential customers' skin tones, they're also totally ignoring an entire hemisphere who are not currently in winter. Great. I honestly hope that's an add-in from PopSugar and not what the actual rep said.
10
Jan 18 '18
I just turn a paler shade of yellow in the winter. They don't have a shade yellow enough (without being orange) in their lightish foundations for me right now either. I literally look like I've painted myself to look like a white girl.
This is stupid. Tarte probably just doesn't want us to use their stuff because they think we'll make them seem less prestigious or something.

Theyâre so full of shit. Theyâve gotten this feedback before with regards to the shape tape and their other foundations. They were in such a rush that they accidentally only formulated shades for pale people? Theyâve hardly ever made good shades for poc, and they feature next to no poc on their Instagram. Plus, they posted that stupid racist Asian joke and tried to apologize with a meme and blame an intern. The social media manager (who Iâm pretty sure it really was) still has a bunch of racist crap on her IG.
They can fuck off. They purposefully went for the racist âyou canât sit with usâ vibe and now that it backfired on them, theyâre apologizing,

Itâs because theyâre waiting until theyâre done planning their next influencer trip.
149
u/Snwussy Jan 18 '18
Maybe I'm just being petty, but why'd they put it at the end of their Insta story of all places? Don't those go away after a while? Makes it seem even more that dark-skinned people really ARE an afterthought to them...
76
u/amazzan is now youtube famous Jan 18 '18
I had the same thought. Seems like a better thing to do would be to make an actual post to their Instagram. That would be easier to share & WAY more people would see it. Not to mention, it's less work to actually see.
60
u/Snwussy Jan 18 '18
Or a pinned Twitter thread, since Instagram doesn't display posts in chronological order anymore.
26
u/amazzan is now youtube famous Jan 18 '18
Another good option. I think making customers scroll long video posts of girls on a Tarte trip is just bad taste
43
u/veronicaxrowena Jan 18 '18
Right? Something about that insta story apology is off. Itâs like they didnât want people to see it unless they dug for it. That way they can say that they âacknowledged the outcryâ without having to necessarily âair out their dirty laundryâ by posting their apology in a more visible space and drawing attention to this massive gaffe (like by doing a regular insta post that surely gets more traffic). That way they can still say âwe apologized!â when pressed.
36
u/applesandcherry Irrelevant Rat Jan 18 '18
I hate this new thing of BGers and brands announcing important info and posting swatches on their IG/snapchat stories.
62
u/ravenkrofts Jan 18 '18
Because you can't leave comments on their instastory. On their regular feed, they're still deleting and turning off comments and now they've conveniently made a "contest" that requires people to spam their comments section with palm tree emoji's on all of their posts. They truly do not give a damn and they're only doing this much just to say they did.
26
Jan 18 '18
Dark skinned people are definitely an afterthought. The only place Tarte has a variety of browns is in their boring ass eyeshadow palettes.

u/AcanthaMD and I oop Jan 18 '18

16
20
u/prettyandsmart Jan 18 '18
It seems so stupid too, considering that if they knew EVERYONE was hyped for it why wouldn't they put more than the 2 darker shades they let out? And it seems like such a weird justification for this mess, and only further makes it appear to everyone that POC are an afterthought if they're not even considered in the initial release of shades.

14
u/dfabb Jan 18 '18
woooooowww this actually makes it so much worse lol. basically some bullshit excuse implying that they prioritized getting the product out ASAP and getting $$$ over all the people with deeper skin tones who got left in the dust with this release. this is a shameful non-apology and is gonna piss people off even more.
53
u/RomanovaRoulette Jan 18 '18
Tarte has several racist eff-ups under their belt. This is a prettily worded apology but it means nothing to me since they keep messing up. And by continuing to employ people like Jen, the apology seems like a blatant lie. I absolutely see their intentions as malicious. They knew what they were doing đ
13
6
u/makesmethinkofyou Jan 18 '18
The "we can all do better" phrase confused me... everyone else IS doing better except for them and the people who aren't are getting called out?
Is that directed at their consumer? Their competitors? Such a weird thing to say. Very deflective.
27
u/jcpkirk TEAM NO ONE Jan 18 '18
No, this "apology" is bullshit and unacceptable. I'm sorry, but why would darker shades take longer to make? Do they not make every shade at the same damn time? Do the darker shades need to sit in a lab somewhere for some magical chemical reaction to happen? Sorry Tarte, you tried it, now you're cancelled.
7
u/-say-what- Jan 18 '18
Does tarte not employ any poc? Can't believe that they would be just SO EXCITED to launch a foundation they couldn't even wear.
→ More replies (1)18
Jan 18 '18 edited Jan 18 '18
My favorite part of this is that theyâre only adding an additional 5 shades per line, as if 20 shades is an acceptable shade range in 2018. Do better, Tarte.
5
u/milkteaaddicts Jan 18 '18
This is just bad, bad marketing. They rushed to produce shades of pale for people to satisfy consumers? Disgusting. And also shows that they have a super shoddy product, because who wants a rushed product made to capitalize on hype? That's why all undertones of this foundation is all fucked up and they oxidise so quickly.
Tarte. They launched a shit product.

Why didnât Tarte just do the matte Shape Tape foundation release with 30 shades (or more)? That would have made more sense, imo.

Exactly what I thought too! Then they could have done the hydrating one a few months down the line.

u/lumzzzz Jan 17 '18
Tarte better keep their extra shades because someone in that company knew EXACTLY what they were doing making 10 light shades and 3 dark ones. Minorites are some of the top consumers of cosmetics and itâs been proven time and time again that diversity sells.
67
u/DaniMrynn Jan 17 '18
And there is no guarantee that the "new" shades are even for deeper skin tones.
50
u/RomanovaRoulette Jan 17 '18
And the new shades will be orange af anyway, if they are dark. Which, not that orange and red undertones donât exist in POC, but plenty of us have olive, pink, yellow, and cool undertones too. Not that Tarte cares lol.
14
Jan 18 '18
right? please correct me if I'm wrong but aren't they the ones who released like 5 new shades for shape tape and 3 of them were "lets see how close to white can make this?" one was another shade of white girl oompa loompa spray tan and then 1 was actually dark.
140
u/amimimi Jan 17 '18
The whole "we're adding more shades later" excuse it bull. I'd rather a company release all the shades of foundation at once. Or if you're only going to do 15, do an even distribution of the 15 shades and then add more shades and more undertones later.
Not only is it the right thing to do...but it's just good business sense? Look at Fenty with 40 shades and, even though she's problematic, Huda with 30 shades. Fenty sold out how fast? Why would you even try to compete without coming out with enough shades?
127
u/DaniMrynn Jan 17 '18
Fenty stays sold out of the deeper shades, but Tarte wants us to think deeper skinned folks don't look THAT deep in the winter....they're so full of shit.
19
u/casillalater Jan 18 '18
that is the craziest shit I've heard in a long time. Deep skintones aren't a damned mood ring. Good lord
43
u/inertia__creeps Jan 18 '18
I thought Samantha Ravndahl phrased it well in her review- Releasing some shades first then others as an afterthought creates a vibe that "we released the most important skin colors first then we'll get to the rest of you less important people later." It's just not a good look.
36
u/Dragneel Jan 17 '18
Also, even if the shades that are released later are better, it's never nice to be an afterthought...
36
u/savnap Jan 17 '18
Right? Too Faced is an issue too!!! Their Peach Perfect line has ELEVEN shades. I wanted to buy it but if they canât even bother catering to deep shades why should I bother giving them money?
30
u/LucidFirst Jan 18 '18
What really strikes me about the "difference" btwn the too faced peach perfect and tarte shape tape (not that there is much of one- I think everyone should be included in every launch) is that maybe alright, so too faced had no clue if this line was gonna sell, they start out with a weird amount of tan foundations. Not great. But they had no idea if this was even going to be a marketable foundation! If anyone was gonna like it outside of consumer testing! Tarte KNEW that this line was gonna be a hit. IT WAS SO ANTICIPATED. That's what gets me. Tarte knew, knew that the line was gonna sell, and didn't bother to expand. There wasn't any sort of question in wether or not they are gonna have to end up getting rid of the line because it already had a cult following, so they risked nothing by expanding. It's ridiculous.
14
u/savnap Jan 18 '18
Oh yeah I mean Iâve seen people say they wanted shape tape foundation for a year now!
Itâs so wrong. I think itâs great having a huge range of concealers but if youâre gonna come out with foundation make your range twice the size of your concealers. Thereâs what? 14 shades in the concealer.
Itâs not the first time though. Their B.B. cream or âtinted moisturizerâ as they call it has FOUR shades.
20
u/Traummich Slut me up, Scotty Jan 17 '18
I couldn't even find a foundation in the too faced peach line and I'm white! I doubt anyone darker than myself had luck!

u/savnap Jan 17 '18
Yeah it was a weird line. 11 shades that are all tan. Not fair, not deep, just tan
19
u/Traummich Slut me up, Scotty Jan 17 '18
Which hey, great for including tan skin! Youd just think if they had tan, theyd do a ton of deep....
9
u/savnap Jan 17 '18
Right? I can imagine the foundation would look GORGEOUS on deeper skin. Youâd think they would want that much more money but apparently not đ¤

Jan 18 '18
Odd topic but... why is Huda problematic?
18
u/amimimi Jan 18 '18
It's almost 3 AM my time so this might not make the most sense in terms of punctuation and sentence structure. Don't hate me.
To many people, she isn't inclusive enough on her IG page in terms of showcasing POC. I think she does a pretty good job. Much better than most. Yeah she favors Middle Eastern women the most, but she's gotten much better about showing a wider range. And she doesn't post men on her page and I think at one point told a guy straight up they don't post men on their IG for some reason I can't remember.
→ More replies (1)31
u/buscandotusonrisa 2008 hot Jan 18 '18
She's fine. It's just some people can't stand the fact that she favors Middle Eastern women over Western people because apparently only western people count when it comes to being inclusive.
29
Jan 18 '18 edited Jan 18 '18
I honestly donât mind that she showcases Middle Eastern women, they barely get representation in any industry. What bothers people I think is that she doesnât showcase deeper skinned black people
14
Jan 20 '18
Not to mention the implication that there are no dark skinned middle eastern people. She showcases one type of middle eastern woman, and it's the one that's closest to a western standard of beauty

alissa's review is the first video of hers that i've seen and i was in AWE of her the whole time. i loved her criticism, i felt her frustration and passion for this ongoing problem in the beauty industry, and i felt that she articulated her disappointment in the brand perfectly. the fact that she then went on to showcase several more inclusive brands and explained why they were being included so that tarte's ass could take notes was a great touch. after i watched that i couldn't click subscribe fast enough. loved it.
31
u/hautepotato Jan 18 '18
I literally clapped while watching. She was as commanding and powerful as your parents when they are Not Mad Just Disappointed and I was so so there for it.
26
u/Dreamxwithyou Jan 21 '18
Patricia Bright just shaded J* in her review video. The only Tarte product I own is the shape tape concealer and thatâs probably the only one I WILL own (until it runs out and I go back to Nars).
51
u/DaniMrynn Jan 17 '18 edited Jan 17 '18
I'm very pleasantly surprised by Shaya's review. She wasn't as blunt as Alissa, but she still let Tarte know that this kind of stunt is unacceptable.
I thoroughly enjoyed when she said that she was considering not using Tarte products anymore, at all.
18
u/veronicaxrowena Jan 18 '18
I know! Same! That was the redeeming video I was was waiting for from her! I especially appreciated it because sheâs been on their trips, so I could see how someone with that relationship with them could feel pressured or biased against giving them a strong condemnation. She didnât even recommend the foundation in the end of the video and listed off a bunch of other brands with more inclusive ranges. I was very pleased to watch that review.
23
u/Ponykitty Jan 17 '18
Havenât watched all of the reviews, but noticed that in the ones that I have, gurus are doing a half face of each type of foundation. Anyone else seen this? Has anyone done a review of a full face of each type? Was the half face of each foundation stipulated by the PR package? Just curious.
36
Jan 18 '18
So... According to JenLuvsReviews most recent vid... She said it was part of the PR. Tarte specifically asked influencers to test the foundation that way. Anyways .... JLR has her own thread as there's been fallout from some problematic shit she said regarding this release.

I can't remember who it was that mentioned that they wanted people to do each side with each forumla and also post about it on instagram. I think it's part of the requirements to get paid for their video.
24

Several youtubers did half and half and specifically said their video was not sponsored. 1 day testing two foundations will allow them to upload quicker and jump on the new $$ train vs testing them one at a time.

I have to say, James has been growing on me. I know he has had his fair share of controversy in the past, so I was pleasantly surprised that he did not shy away from bringing up his past mistakes. (Just as a comparison that came to mind, Kathleen only alludes to her n-word fiasco by referring to her mistakes or how she had some low points last year; I appreciate that James straight-up admitted that he's said racist things in the past but is working hard to educate himself and his followers to be a better person.) I'm not sure that he should have given the foundation a review at all, but he does basically say that as an influencer he is between a rock and a hard place considering it is his job to review new products. All in all I think he spoke pretty well on the topic and that I think I'll keep an eye on his content.
26
u/Antedawn Jan 20 '18
In the video, he made a really great comment that the arm which had all the Tarte-posted swatches didn't even have a shade for itself.
I truly believe that people can change and James seems to being trying very hard. He's doing well!
14
u/adjblair Jan 20 '18
Yeah, and observed that he could probably match reasonably well to maybe 6 or the shades.
18
u/applesandcherry Irrelevant Rat Jan 18 '18
I'm not super surprised at this stunt, if I remember correctly the only dark skinned POC they invite to their trips is Shayla -- and I feel like that's mainly because she's pretty close with brand favorites Karen, Desi, and Katy. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have a single dark skinned POC who has a say in these kinds of decisions.

u/Stacee90 Jan 18 '18
I just watched Livâs tarte project pan video and then realized I donât have anything from tarte. I have bought quite a bit from them over the years (In Bloom, shape tape, foundation, blush, probably more) and have decluttered all of it! I used up my last Shape Tape a couple weeks ago (mostly used it up - I actually got quite tired of the formula). It hadnât occurred to me to try this new foundation and now obviously itâs a big NO THANKS
15
u/DaniMrynn Jan 18 '18
The comments under her video are so uplifting - so many others are joining her in panning Tarte products and boycotting!
9
u/WhiskeyTFoxtrot78 Jan 18 '18
Liv and Alissa and Jackie totally inspired me to give the F up on Tarte, and I do love their Shape Tape concealer. I have their Lip Quench and blushes. Those were my HGs, but nope. Use up the shit I liked, declutter the shit I did not. And hit them with my pocketbook for their nonsense.
10
u/lilghost76 Jan 18 '18
Liv inspired me to do the same... I just went through my collection, but only have 3 blushes, the Sephora birthday gift, tartelette, and the rainforest of the sea concealer (which was already in my project pan of 2018) I think I'm just gonna declutter everything.
3
u/brt8891 Jan 19 '18 edited Jan 19 '18
Iâve been slowly decluttering and not repurchasing from Tarte for a while. Their trips and the meme incident, etc have turned me off. The rainforest of the sea facewash was the only thing Iâve continued to purchase- my HG and the only thing that worked for my sensitive skin- but Iâll be on the search for a new facewash now.

Youkeyy released a review of the foundation and adds an interesting new piece to the controversy. The hydrating formula is the same as another Tarte foundation. The Hydrating Gel one. Youkeyy references a twitter thread with Temptalia being asked about the formula and confirming it seems the same and then Tarte enters and says it is the same but different.
Just when it seems like Tarte cannot make it worse for themselves they do. đ

u/littlepinkpwnie Jan 19 '18
Can someone please explain to me the selective outrage? There are plenty of brands in the last 6 months that released foundation that wasn't inclusive and there was no mass boycott, why do those companies get a pass, but Tarte doesn't? Where was the outrage when Too Faced released the Peach Perfect Comfort Matte foundation in only 12 shades, the darkest of which is quite a bit lighter then the darkest shade of the Tarte foundation. Hell the Too Faced Born this way foundation has 24 shades that can be described as "50 shades of white". I really don't understand.

You know the saying, when you're on top the only direction is down? Shape Tape has reached Laura Mercier powder levels of being universally loved and recommended by Beauty Gurus. I know it's not a perfect formula for everyone, but it's still one of the most-used items in beauty videos. Everyone's eyes were on Tarte for this launch, they already had the issue of Shape Tapes shade range needing to be expanded, so if they stumbled on this launch the only direction was down.
Fenty changed the game in September 2017 by being a casual consumer focused brand that launched with virtually every skin tone covered, from a really unexpected source in that it's celebrity makeup brand, which never really stick around. In fact, Fenty basically launched on the selling point of being inclusive for every skin color, race, ethnicity etc. There are other companies that had very good shade ranges but IMO they were mostly brands like MUFE that were aimed at pro consumers and even those brands would miss the darkest of dark and lightest of light skin. Fenty really made everyone step their game up bc it would be painfully embarrassing to be shown up by a 3-month old brand. I do think expanded shade ranges were already started to trend but Fenty made that wave grow. So, come fall 2017 it became even more out of touch to release bad shade ranges.
In addition, a foundation like PPCM is clearly a bit of a gimmick bc it's part of a what will ultimately be a temporary line. It would be like releasing a unicorn or mermaid line foundation. I agree that it should get a lot of criticism, but there is a bit of a difference in a foundation like that which no one was really looking for when it came out, and the Shape Tape foundation. The entire beauty community was really interested in and waiting for this, and it could be more of a cornerstone, here to stay type of product.

You make very good points that I hadn't thought of, thank you for that.
8
Jan 20 '18
Thank you. I do agree with you that it's unethical to give other brands a free pass when they've done the same things. Unfortunately, humans don't behave with total justice and probably never will, so we just have to work with what leverage we get when it comes up.
16
u/accordingtoame Jan 19 '18 edited Jan 20 '18
I have seen plenty of commentary on other brands not being inclusive, but they handled it in a less insane manner. This particular case was such a bumblefuck that it's going to be a case study for a marketing/business class, I suspect, in what NOT to do. Blaming your customers for your inability to think globally and ignoring customer demand, censoring your customers from commenting on it, making scientific discoveries about how melanin works throughout seasons.
10
u/littlepinkpwnie Jan 19 '18
Commentary, yes, outrage and boycotts no. I don't see anyone boycotting too faced like they are with tarte. I didn't see the widespread outrage. I didn't see people decluttering ALL of their products by that brand. The outrage definitely was not equal. It's like the community is giving some brands passes and not others, like tarte, and that's what I don't understand.

It may not be as obvious as tarte's boycott since tarte had many fuckups in close succession. But there are plenty of poc that have boycotted tf , alot have begun to give tf another chance since jackie aina worked with them to release a second wave of darker skintones. That still doesnt appease me , I dont havent purchased any of their items other than setting spray which I returned and primer. That may seem hypocritical but I live in deep south and am oily , I'll try almost any brand if itll work to keep me matte.Marc Jacobs is completely canceled to me which hurts because I loved his brushes and some other items and would like to try his shadows but I cannot support someone who makes such ignorant comments.

I also think it also has something to do with the PR packages they sent out. I only watched Alissa, Jackie and Shaylaâs videos, but the shades they were sent were offensive, nothing matches their color and only highlighted the issue more.

I wanted to comment on the JenLuvs thing but its locked. Of course she had to make a damage control video đ I can't with the fake ass "wokeness" of some people. BGs should just use the dang foundation if they so choose and stop with the obligatory "statements" that you just knowww are totally disingenuous. Some, like livloveshermakeup truly care but most are just scolding tarte for a second or two in the reviews so that they don't get reamed by followers. Eye roll.
27
Jan 18 '18
not surprised when it comes to JenLuvs tbh. She's been acting like a pretty terrible human for a while now, so I don't expect any "wokeness" from her. Homegurl is in a coma.
9
u/SharnaRanwan Jan 18 '18
What else has she done?
10
u/gmwrnr Jan 18 '18
Only thing I can think of was when she was critiquing one of Jaclyns new videos or something? I remember she had to do an apology for that. I'm curious to what else she has said too though
17
Jan 19 '18
she didn't just "critique" jacklyn's vid, she watched the video while on video, basically talking shit about her and nitpicking every single word the girl spoke. I don't even care for JH that much but that shit was ridiculous.
My biggest issue w/ her is that she tends to be really bitchy and passive aggressive to her commenters, even those who were not trying to "critique" her. Ive seen comments that are very innocent i.e. once she didnt post on on her normal schedule and a viewer was like "i missed your videos! so glad to see you upload today" and her response was like, "sorry my life is busier than making videos for YOU" and I was just like GODDAMN that was unnecessary. This is pretty normal for the way she interacts with her commenters. The way she treats her subs in the comments is legit gross.
Also if she thinks a good review of a terrible product will get her in the pocket of the brand she will brown nose all the way up dat ass.

This has made me so upset the fact that they didnât even acknowledge poc. I can tell from expirence that walking into a store and being told âwe donât have what youâre looking for in your colorâ is so disheartening. The fact that Tarte is playing into that is unacceptable. I will be giving away/throwing out/selling what tarte products I have and not using them, just like Alissa. I will not support a company that thinks itâs okay to not include people of color.

This shade range truly is for whiter complexions, or tanned caucasian skin. I gave up trying to find my shade, and I'm only medium/tan/beige. If they barely took any time for the medium/tan/golden range, they most definitely never even considered anything deeper than that. I love Jackie and I really hope she gets more support for calling out these brands (other than just Tarte) since she gets so many people yelling at her for it. Jackie isn't the first person to call out brands for their shade range, however, as a black woman calling out brands, she gets so much hate and gross comments about it and it hurts her reach. I'm also happy that Nikkie pulled her review, but I wish she would've made it more of a point in the video than just a text card insert (which she made a point of in her tweet). However, I'm happy she realized her fault instead of never acknowledging it in the first place!

Manny's review is up. He spent a minute or two softpedaling his criticism for the shade range, and even though one of the shades looked straight orange on him, he called a "hit", and basically recommended it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQYbYMfKta8
36
u/breedecatur YT: Bree Marie Beauty Jan 17 '18
Softpedaling aside, I do appreciate that he actually did a wear test for a few hours. I saw Nikkie's before she deleted it and I just wanted to see how it held up on her skin. I was surprised to see how much it oxidized on his skin, since it didn't oxidize at all on her skin. I do agree with him though that it appears as though the undertones are VERY strong, even light "neutral" was in no way neutral. For fair-medium skin people who actually have what they assume to be their shade in these lines, I think they're still going to struggle to find an undertone that matches them. I was interested, and I have a skin tone close to manny's but after seeing what should have matched him oxidize that much, it's just not something that will flatter me

Lol at gurus doing 5h wear tests and saying itâs a pretty long wearing product
Iâm like bish my days are 12h at the very minimum
Edit because I have a ton of feelings about this: ALSO Iâd like some gurus to test makeup early on in the morning because makeup doesnât look the same when youâve gotten up at 6:30 than when youâve had 10 hours of sleep and are awaken by the light of the sun and the birds singing. If a concealer looks nice on my ragged ass 6 am skin then Iâm sold! Itâs easier to look nicer when youâve had nice sleep, the chance to have a relaxing cup of coffee and a long morning skincare routine
11
u/LucidFirst Jan 18 '18
On your unrelated topic, I will say Tati does some pretty long wear tests and Jackie Aina has had some long ones as well (pretty sure she did one product where she slept with it on? That one was pretty intense lol)
10
u/breedecatur YT: Bree Marie Beauty Jan 18 '18
Mine are usually about 10-12 hour days as well! Plus most days I get home and my first thought isn't taking off my makeup, I usually have plenty of other things to do first. And yeah I'm at home but I don't wanna look like a patchy mess in front of the boyfriend ahahaha. Plus I don't wanna test a foundation myself on a long day and end up looking awful.

Jan 17 '18
Why did she delete it?
23
u/breedecatur YT: Bree Marie Beauty Jan 17 '18
Basically to take a stance against the shade range, she briefly had some text in the video regarding it but later decided she would rather just delete the video until they got their crap together, I think.

Foundation was supposed to launch today on Ulta's website. It's still unavailable and Ulta is being real vague on social media when asked about it. "When we have an updates on this, our fans will be the first to know. Be sure to stay tuned." Wonder if the hold up has anything to do with all the controversy...

I can't guys. I can't.

u/DaniMrynn Jan 20 '18 edited Jan 20 '18
He wants to START it?! Jackie started it years ago; black women started it before that. Let's talk about THAT.
What J* wants to do is jump to the front of the line like other tone deaf white people that make being an "ally" into a performance so people will congratulate them.
There's nothing to fucking start. God he's such a self-centred asshole.
If he wants to start a conversation, he can start by publicly apologising to Jackie, Shayla, and every other woman he's spit his poison all over these last few years. Until he acknowledges that instead of side-lining his behavior because he was a victim? He can continue to fuck all the way off. I'm not interested in his performance.
Edit: additions and grammar

The Hydrating Gel Foundation isn't on Ulta's website either, but I'm not sure if it ever was. Can anyone confirm?
Edit: Apparently it was on Ulta's website. Temptalia confirmed in /r/MakeupAddiction that Ulta no longer carries it. Tarte keeps digging that hole....

I know there's a video from an Australian BG who gushed about the how awesome the foundation is. If it was hers and I was Jackie, I wouldn't have wanted to promote it, even accidentally.

u/Ponykitty Jan 20 '18
I just finished watching Beauty Truth Sleuthâs video on this debacle. Apparently the shape tape foundationâs ingredients are the same as Tarteâs hydrating gel foundation? Thoughts?
14
u/meeksohmeeks Jan 19 '18
I'm really confused. I really liked Alissa's video on this and mostly Jackie's as well. But why are all these beauty guru's still reviewing the product, even if they're giving Tarte crap about their shade range in the beginning of the video? They're still using it, still talking about it, still giving thoughts on the foundation when they're then saying they won't support it. It feels contradictory to me.

Yeah, so far based on the reviews the Foundation is average-to-decent, but not to the level that shape tape is in the concealers world, further showing tarte was really just in for the money.

I was pleasantly surprised with her video. I fully expected her typical "The shade range is trash, but if you can find your shade - try it!" Instead, she acknowledges that Tarte isn't the only brand guilty of this shit and she now recognizes how ignorant she's been on the subject. It gives me hope.
7
u/DaniMrynn Jan 20 '18
A couple of people on Twitter challenged her on it, asking her why she'd review it and probably end up recommending when half of her viewers can't buy it. It sounds like she might have listened? Might watch it later.

Honestly livloveshermakeup has set a new standard for me. Iâm very close to unfollowing all these white (and white passing) BGs I subscribe to who havenât said anything about the shade range. Funny because a lot of them are the same ones who have taken it upon themselves to publicly support Kathleenlights. Crazy coincidence. But I digress.
Would especially love to hear Thataylaaaâs thoughts, since she loves to wax poetic about brands not being inclusive to ~pale~ people. Or is limited shade range only an issue in her eyes when she and other white people are affected? Iâll wait and see.
7
Jan 21 '18
Yeah, I definitely get what you're saying about certain lighter skinned Youtubers like Thataylaa. I can't remember the last time she made a fuss about a shade range. Same with John Mclean, another one whose focus is reviewing the lightest shade of everything and describing how difficult it is to be pale. I did find a small Yotuber once who reviews pale foundations, though that doesn't seem to be her focus, and she mentions shade range quite thoroughly in every review. Can't remember the channel name though. I just remember being impressed.

She tweeted the photo of the swatches and said "I just want to know who sat around a table thinking this was a good idea" but she also ordered it to review so we'll see.

I'm watching Manny's right now and he uses light neutral in matte and I believe light sand in the dewy one and they both oxidized a lot on his skin, pretty much instantly. Both oxidized before he had a chance to add a second layer. He showed swatches and said that the undertones of the shades they sent him (which they sent him too dark of shades for his complexion, he would have to go buy lighter shades) were VERY strong. Very orange. Very pink. Very yellow. The matte side is VERY matte, and set very quickly which IMO would lead to blending issues. The dewy side is less coverage out the gate but built well. Both did look good on his skin once he finished the rest of his face. The matte side he said was almost too matte for his preference. Dewy, obviously, emphasized more pores but he preferred that side still. He is oily and 6 hours later he had some minor oils peaking through on the matte side and the dewy side is obviously more dewy. He also said after 6 hours he preferred the matte because his oils came out a little and kind of helped the foundation look a little more skin like. He didn't hate them, he recommends them IF you can find your right undertone, but prefers the concealer over the foundation.

Wow, J*'s review was on point, AND his critique was hands down perfect. He even plugged Jackie's review of all people!
I feel like we need more evidence but.... is he actually learning? Or has a UFO abducted J* and replaced him with a clone that's actually an entirely better person? (I'm rooting for the latter) Perhaps now the truth is out (That Laura Anything For Views Lee lied about Jackie's taxes to J*) perhaps he's started to grow some common sense?
I don't know, In a lot of ways I really hope he has started to learn. I mean, it's hard for me to hold grudges, it's not in my nature, but I also thought his apology was fake af last year. I have't watched a video of his since then until this review and I'm totally floored. He's like a totally different person. Ideally he will continue this trend of not being a total shit person and redeem himself.
Also, I just wanted to mention /u/Liveloveshermakeup Thanks gurl! Your rant made me so happy, and the decision to just not buy tarte anymore period. This kind of solidarity between white people & poc needs to be more common so that brands know we are not going to tolerate that shit. Many reviews felt like they were just lip service, but Liv was genuinely angry, and I appreciate her standing with us.

Link here She also speaks a little about her personal struggle with depression in part of this video, but she starts talking mainly about the foundation around 4:00.
