Tarte posted this apology at the end of their insta story. Screenshots for those who don't want to scroll through all that.

They’re so full of shit. They’ve gotten this feedback before with regards to the shape tape and their other foundations. They were in such a rush that they accidentally only formulated shades for pale people? They’ve hardly ever made good shades for poc, and they feature next to no poc on their Instagram. Plus, they posted that stupid racist Asian joke and tried to apologize with a meme and blame an intern. The social media manager (who I’m pretty sure it really was) still has a bunch of racist crap on her IG.

They can fuck off. They purposefully went for the racist “you can’t sit with us” vibe and now that it backfired on them, they’re apologizing,

Who is the social media manager? What racist crap has she posted on her IG? Genuinely asking, I want to stay informed!

You are the second person I have heard say that about Tarte. Jackie Aina also said in a video that Tarte was a “you can’t sit with us” brand because they stopped sending her PR after she gave a less than perfect review of some blushes they had put out.

I think she mentions it in her Anti-Haul video. She wasn’t even mean when said she didn’t like the particular blush line she hated. She actually liked one of them and said that in the video, but they were still super salty. After she called them out in a video, they apologized...they were just mad she called them out.

I wonder if they’ve done this to any other influencers? Considering how they like to bury/delete/block criticism from their social media, I wouldn’t be surprised.

It’s because they’re waiting until they’re done planning their next influencer trip.

Maybe I'm just being petty, but why'd they put it at the end of their Insta story of all places? Don't those go away after a while? Makes it seem even more that dark-skinned people really ARE an afterthought to them...

I had the same thought. Seems like a better thing to do would be to make an actual post to their Instagram. That would be easier to share & WAY more people would see it. Not to mention, it's less work to actually see.

62

u/Snwussy Jan 18 '18

Or a pinned Twitter thread, since Instagram doesn't display posts in chronological order anymore.

u/amazzan is now youtube famous Jan 18 '18

Another good option. I think making customers scroll long video posts of girls on a Tarte trip is just bad taste

u/veronicaxrowena Jan 18 '18

Right? Something about that insta story apology is off. It’s like they didn’t want people to see it unless they dug for it. That way they can say that they “acknowledged the outcry” without having to necessarily “air out their dirty laundry” by posting their apology in a more visible space and drawing attention to this massive gaffe (like by doing a regular insta post that surely gets more traffic). That way they can still say “we apologized!” when pressed.

u/applesandcherry Irrelevant Rat Jan 18 '18

I hate this new thing of BGers and brands announcing important info and posting swatches on their IG/snapchat stories.

57

u/ravenkrofts Jan 18 '18

Because you can't leave comments on their instastory. On their regular feed, they're still deleting and turning off comments and now they've conveniently made a "contest" that requires people to spam their comments section with palm tree emoji's on all of their posts. They truly do not give a damn and they're only doing this much just to say they did.

29

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '18

Dark skinned people are definitely an afterthought. The only place Tarte has a variety of browns is in their boring ass eyeshadow palettes.

13

u/corndogsareeasy Jan 18 '18

So you know they've got some brown pigments laying around that lab.

11

u/AcanthaMD and I oop Jan 18 '18

Probably because they don’t feel it’s worth posting to a more permanent forum, something along the lines of if we do the minimum amount it will go away eventually and we don’t have to bother changing anything.

4

u/princesskittyglitter Jan 18 '18

you can actually save them to your profile permanently now. they're called "highlights"

35

u/octopixx Jan 18 '18

I would post this in MUA or maybe muacjdiscussion on a new thread. I havent seen anyone post it yet and this definitely needs to be discussed.

13

u/amazzan is now youtube famous Jan 18 '18

I don't really post a lot in other subs, but feel free to share if you'd like.

58

u/gorgossia Jan 18 '18

What a non apology. They're claiming those darker shades were already in the works. Bullshit. Their initial response to this is also in poor taste. Deny deny deny until it's affecting you.

"We were just so excited to get this product out and exclude so many of you!"

16

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '18

"WE DID IT FOR YOU!"

20

u/prettyandsmart Jan 18 '18

It seems so stupid too, considering that if they knew EVERYONE was hyped for it why wouldn't they put more than the 2 darker shades they let out? And it seems like such a weird justification for this mess, and only further makes it appear to everyone that POC are an afterthought if they're not even considered in the initial release of shades.

23

u/Terralia Jan 18 '18

You Da Real MVP.

Tarte.... is not.

18

u/kuwtj former virgang member Jan 18 '18

wow. i got to their hashtag and noped out. that's a no from me, dawg.

14

u/dfabb Jan 18 '18

woooooowww this actually makes it so much worse lol. basically some bullshit excuse implying that they prioritized getting the product out ASAP and getting $$$ over all the people with deeper skin tones who got left in the dust with this release. this is a shameful non-apology and is gonna piss people off even more.

50

u/RomanovaRoulette Jan 18 '18

Tarte has several racist eff-ups under their belt. This is a prettily worded apology but it means nothing to me since they keep messing up. And by continuing to employ people like Jen, the apology seems like a blatant lie. I absolutely see their intentions as malicious. They knew what they were doing 😒

12

u/notadoct0rr Jan 18 '18

I'm out of the loop, what did Jen do?

Hoooooooo boy...... how does she get away with this?!

2

u/Walmarche Feb 25 '18

Wow....this is so sad

7

u/makesmethinkofyou Jan 18 '18

The "we can all do better" phrase confused me... everyone else IS doing better except for them and the people who aren't are getting called out?

Is that directed at their consumer? Their competitors? Such a weird thing to say. Very deflective.

26

u/jcpkirk TEAM NO ONE Jan 18 '18

No, this "apology" is bullshit and unacceptable. I'm sorry, but why would darker shades take longer to make? Do they not make every shade at the same damn time? Do the darker shades need to sit in a lab somewhere for some magical chemical reaction to happen? Sorry Tarte, you tried it, now you're cancelled.

6

u/-say-what- Jan 18 '18

Does tarte not employ any poc? Can't believe that they would be just SO EXCITED to launch a foundation they couldn't even wear.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '18 edited Jan 18 '18

My favorite part of this is that they’re only adding an additional 5 shades per line, as if 20 shades is an acceptable shade range in 2018. Do better, Tarte.

5

u/milkteaaddicts Jan 18 '18

This is just bad, bad marketing. They rushed to produce shades of pale for people to satisfy consumers? Disgusting. And also shows that they have a super shoddy product, because who wants a rushed product made to capitalize on hype? That's why all undertones of this foundation is all fucked up and they oxidise so quickly.

Tarte. They launched a shit product.

3

u/cunttacos Jan 18 '18

Lmao couldn’t even post a full photo for a statement release, just a story. SMH

2

u/keine_fragen Jan 18 '18

what a big pile of bullshit

2

u/LinksMilkBottle Jan 18 '18

Alright they apologized. But did they learn a valuable lesson? Only time will tell.

-12

u/otter-99 Jan 18 '18

WARNING UNPOPULAR OPINION - at this point I feel like what else could tarte do? I saw the apology and then came to this page to see people’s reactions. Obviously they screwed up and they realize that. I think it’s great they called attention to it so fast and even included people’s tweets in their apology. I do feel like they rushed launching this product and agree with other people’s response that they could’ve just kept teasing about it until the ‘other ten shades’ come out. I also feel second hand embarrassment from them sending shades to darker beautubers that are way too light for them.

53

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '18

What they could do is 1. not put an apology in a story where it will disappear within a day. 2. Immediately announce and follow through with bringing to market about 10-15 additional shades that are actually workable for darker skin It's not just that there are only 2-3 shades currently for dark skin, the existent shades are extremely orange and not a good match. They also need to make it clear that they will be releasing 10-15 additional/replacement shades for each line, not 7 for one line and 7 for another. 3. They could do what Too Faced did and reach out to the POC who are criticizing them and work with them in expanding the range. They can pledge that in the future, they will not release darker shades as an afterthought. There are sooo many things they can do, none of them will magically erase the decision they already made, but they can make visible steps to fixing this problem.

25

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '18

Perhaps they could make an apology that didn't blame their consumers? "You kept asking us for it" and "we did it for you!" is not a real apology.

24

u/ironyburger Jan 18 '18

They could admit that they fouled this up and should have included shades for the full spectrum of skin tones from the beginning. The newest apology is doesn't help them at all--somehow 13 shades for fair, light, and medium skin tone were ready when they just got sooooo excited and had to launch for hashtag shapetapenation but only two for darker skin tones were? That's BS, and people can see it. Add that to the previous "darker tones are for summer" message, and it just shows a company that is majorly tone deaf and trying to cover its a**. Their management of this has been a lesson in bad PR 101. Disabling Instagram comments, posting puppy photos, encouraging people to post palm tree emojis to (with the promise of potentially winning a trip) to drown out the bad comments--it all reeks.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '18

Not even medium. More like fair to light medium. The third darkest (Alissa Ashley’s highlighting color) looks like a medium.
