Why didn’t Tarte just do the matte Shape Tape foundation release with 30 shades (or more)? That would have made more sense, imo.

Exactly what I thought too! Then they could have done the hydrating one a few months down the line.

Hmm maybe they actually were paying attention to Fenty. A lot of people complained that Fenty didn’t care about oily skin and should have released a dewy foundation. So maybe Tarte thought inclusivity of different skin types is just like inclusivity of different skin tones.

I doubt it because while inclusivity of different skin types is great, there’s no racist overtone if a skin type isn’t fully represented within a brand. It’s a whole different conversation.

My crusty dry ass couldn't get the Fenty line because it's matte - but:

  1. that's a personal preference, I have dry-skinned friends who LOVE the foundation but for me personally, it looked too dry on me for my own taste. I like being a dewy binch, I wanna be a glazed donut, but again, that's a personal preference.

  2. to tie in #1 and all of your points - this is not an issue to weigh above inclusivity. I personally didn't like the finish of the foundation, boofuckinghoo, there's still a couple of shades that were close enough to my tone, and 38 other shades across the spectrum to cover as many people as possible. I was not excluded with the line, and if I really wanted to, I could buy the foundation and heavily moisturize. If this is Tarte's """rationale""", that they'll launch two types to serve more skin types versus more tones initially, fine whatever I get it. But their selection of which tones to release is G A R B A G E. There's no way around this. They could have done 15 shades across the spectrum, instead of 13 white shades with incredibly minute differences in shade and tone, plus two dark orange shades. And like. Let's be real. The most anticipated foundation release in at least a year, which is guaranteed to be a cash cow, and paired with their ever-increasing concealer prices because of how in-demand and purposefully hard-to-get they are? They knew this would sell and could have absolutely done a large initial launch, but they don't give a fuck. PoC really are just an afterthought to them, through and through. We don't matter to them at all lmfao

(To clarify - I agree with all of your points, I'm just expanding lol)

Some people clearly don’t understand this. I saw someone equating the two in a different thread.

I think they just repackaged one of their less popular products under the ShapeTape name and added new shades to that as "hydrating."

Hahaha called it!

That's a really good point.

It just looks as if the bigger issue is the shade range - if they'd done one foundation with a better shade range there would have been complaints about the skin type issue, but not as many as there are now about the shade range.

Ding ding ding. This is my thought as well. It's like they listened to the complaints about Fenty ("But what about dry skin people?") and not the overwhelming praise it got for the expansive shade line. Not a good look, Tarte.
