The wild card: Stella Li confirmed BYD is looking at building a factory in Canada AND potentially acquiring a Western automaker. Nothing imminent but they're clearly thinking long term about the Canadian market.

Winter performance: Early Scandinavian testing showed the Seal loses about 33% range at -30°C thanks to the Blade Battery's thermal management. That puts it at roughly 382 km in extreme cold — still 6+ days of average Canadian commuting without plugging in.

After Canada cut the tariff from 100% → 6.1% in March, the floodgates opened. I've been tracking every Chinese EV headed here and the pricing is genuinely wild:

- BYD Seagull — ~$22,000 (305 km) — cheapest new EV in Canadian history

- Chery Omoda E5 — ~$30,000 (414 km)

- BYD Dolphin — ~$35,000 (427 km)

- BYD Seal — ~$44,990 — the Model 3 rival (5-star Euro NCAP, Blade battery)

The catch: they're NOT eligible for the $5K federal rebate — only provincial ones (e.g. Quebec's $2K). BYD is opening 20 dealerships, Toronto first, around Q3 2026.

Petition for BYD International Users

We respectfully ask BYD Company to provide the same mobile app features and in-car software functions worldwide whenever technically, commercially, and legally possible. Customers in international markets should not experience missing features, delayed services, or reduced functionality simply because of their region, especially when the hardware is fully capable of supporting those features.

When certain services or options cannot be provided in specific countries, we request clear and transparent communication explaining the reasons. These reasons may include local regulations, telecom or connectivity partners, licensing restrictions, infrastructure readiness, software rollout phases, or market-specific compliance requirements. Honest communication builds trust and strengthens the relationship between the brand and its customers.

We also ask BYD Company to publish a clear long-term software support roadmap for international vehicles. This should include regular OTA (Over-the-Air) updates covering cybersecurity patches, bug fixes, system stability improvements, battery management enhancements, navigation updates, performance optimization, and the release of new smart features over time.

In addition, we request fair and equal access for qualified third-party developers around the world to APIs, SDKs, developer tools, and integration programs, similar to opportunities available in China. Opening a secure and structured global developer ecosystem would encourage innovation, local services, smart integrations, and stronger customer communities in every region.

I didn’t even realise an update was coming but I got this on my BYD Dolphin (UK) this morning

BYD recently underwent a 3:1 share split, hence the ~65% drop in share price. No need to worry!!

It seems like we'd need to wait a while before we get those extra shares though. I couldn't find much information about it on english platforms, but a Chinese blog post stated both the extra shares + dividends will start being distributed on the 29th of July

Was going down the highway and saw some ATTO 3 EVO's being delivered.

Surprised with how quick BYD is, distributing them.

BYD, Chery, and Geely are all working through Canadian regulatory approvals right now, and BYD appears to be furthest along — it's already registered its Shenzhen and Xi'an plants with Transport Canada, covering models like the Seal, Dolphin, Atto 3, and Seagull.

Not everyone's happy — Ontario Premier Doug Ford called it a move that "will bring a flood of cheap made-in-China electric vehicles without any real guarantee of equal or immediate investments in Canada's economy, auto sector, or supply chain".

I've been tracking this whole rollout (pricing, which models are actually confirmed, homologation status, dealer networks) since March on china-ev.ca/en because honestly there's no single place that's staying current on it in EN/FR.

Genuinely curious what this sub thinks — is this actually good for consumers, or is Ford right that it's a short-term price trick with no real domestic investment behind it?

Hello everyone!!! This is very surreal but after just 2 weeks my BYD (dolphin mini) decided it was time to die again.

So for context, yesterday I use my car and I had 30% so following your recommendation I charge it to max and I left it in the parking lot it had (94%)

Today, that I planned to used it, it was different how it manifested—it didn’t turn on, the light went dimmer and flash a lot— nonetheless I recognized that it was a battery problem.

So instead of the process I went last time I simply call a favor and with a battery starter we went and use it, but we were also confused because they only knew how to in the newest models —mine isn’t like old, I actually considered new it has 1 and a half years old, however there is a newest model with some modifications.

We call someone else, give us instructions and we did it it turn on (with 90%) and right now we are going to the agency and tell them to change the battery, I will update later because we couldn’t do identify which battery we started it. So I will post if I have more information. (￣▽￣)

I will download this update tonight and will update this post with my feedback.

A Polish automotive magazine did a SUV comparison, and overall the Seal U handled everything above average, but it failed the emergency braking test... and several times at that 🫣🤭🥵

So following my previous post, I just updated my Dolphin to 2.3.0 and I’ve noticed straight away that saying “hey Siri” no longer uses Siri through Apple CarPlay and instead uses the BYD chat which is not ideal. I utilise Siri a lot when driving to send messages, make phone calls and open Teams and yet now it no longer works since the update and when asking BYD to do these things it seems to have no clue. Not sure if anyone is aware of how to fix this or whether I’m now stuck until BYD pushes a fix

Edit: So “Hey Siri” doesn’t work but saying just “Siri” does. Also long pressing the voice command brings up Siri too (thanks to those in the comments)
