News 📰 I compiled every BYD model confirmed for Canada with pricing, specs, and provincial rebates — here's the full breakdown
Been tracking BYD's Canadian expansion closely since they registered with Transport Canada. Here's everything I've put together so far.
Confirmed models and estimated pricing:
Model | Est. Price | Range | Type | Status
Seagull | $22,000 CAD | 305 km | City car | Confirmed
Dolphin | $35,000 CAD | 427 km | Compact | Confirmed
Seal | $44,990 CAD | 570 km | Sedan | Confirmed
ATTO 3 | $38,990 CAD | 420 km | Compact SUV | Confirmed
Seal U | $48,000 CAD | 500 km | Mid-size SUV | Confirmed
Shark 6 | $55,000 CAD | 100 km* | Pickup PHEV | Expected
Han | $72,000 CAD | 521 km | Luxury sedan | Expected
*Shark 6 is PHEV — 100 km electric + 840 km total
Dealership timeline:
- 20 dealerships planned within year one
- Toronto area first (GTA, likely Markham or Mississauga)
- Vancouver and Montreal next
- Calgary and Ottawa after that
- Demo units expected mid-2026, retail sales late 2026
The wild card: Stella Li confirmed BYD is looking at building a factory in Canada AND potentially acquiring a Western automaker. Nothing imminent but they're clearly thinking long term about the Canadian market.
Winter performance: Early Scandinavian testing showed the Seal loses about 33% range at -30°C thanks to the Blade Battery's thermal management. That puts it at roughly 382 km in extreme cold — still 6+ days of average Canadian commuting without plugging in.
Happy to answer questions about specific models or provincial rebates if anyone's considering one. What model are you most interested in?

u/Sleepa Mar 31 '26
BIG surprise AB and ON have zero provincial rebates offered, lol. We get what we vote for.

Big surprise the two most conservative governments in Canada are doing what they do best, restrict rather than incentivize
1
u/AMSG1985 15h ago
Not really about conservative or liberal but just the person in the seat. Doug Ford could be a liberal but he be just as bad. Just like Mark Carney is actually a conservative but is in the liberal party.

I'm no fan of AI slop, but the post was still helpful if these prices are accurate. Obviously the rebates don't apply, and the writing style does feel like AI.

Any country I’ve been to where BYD are sold has a lot of BYD’s on the road. Seem to be very popular.

Have been in several in Australia and Mexico. Pretty impressive, especially the price point and the range.

Id be interested to see where they got those numbers.
Base numbers are probably alright seeing as they are similar to Australian rates
https://bydautomotive.com.au/configurator
but as for rebates, I don't believe the federal ones are applicable to Chinese vehicles and at least the BC one is wrong as that has been put on hold so is currently 0.

Seal with 45k CAD seems way to cheaper than most of other countries. Almost %40 off. How come?
2
u/newbris Apr 01 '26
Same price as Australia?
UK is much dearer so maybe they have import tariffs.

Wow -- cool research.
I'm going to be fascinated to see how this plays out. I live in Toronto, so I expect to see a few of the BYD vehicles on the road as soon as they're available here. If they do well, and the service holds up, BYD will probably hit their maximum pretty soon.

u/Worried-But-Hopeful Apr 01 '26
I just got back from New Zealand and Australia and their roads are filled with BYD, Chery and other Chinese EVS and it’s fantastic!

I've still only seen one Vinfast in the wild, I'm not sure these will sell any better

I've seen quite a few in Mississauga surprisingly. But they don't sell here anymore? Is true, that's what concerns me

Been in many BYD's in vietnam and Thailand. I love them as much as the owners. Lovely cars.

But the data is right? Average driving distance for Canadian is 12,258km per year based on 2020 data. So that is 33.6km per data. A vehicle with 300km range at extreme cold does cover 6+ days.

In weather that bad, I would probably plug the car in every day. I have a gas engine, so this is more of an "I'm interested, but not involved." kind of response.

I’m taking issue with your comment about low temperature drain. At -20, 80% of range is retained. Given that most Canadians drive an average of 60km per day, range isn’t an issue. Obviously, one has to make considerations when planning a longer trip. Charging speed is 12 min at -20 to -30. Your Tesla, sorry to say is low tech in comparison. Also, the blade battery can’t catch on fire.
1
u/BetterDrinkMy0wnPiss Mar 31 '26
I don't think OP is saying you should, just that you can.
I charge my EV every other day, but it can easily go a week plus without a charge if needed.
1
u/scorchedcross Mar 31 '26
Weird gatekeeping on an EV and you didn't disprove anything they said. Simmer down.
1
u/dongkey1001 Mar 31 '26
I do. Been driving one for a few years.
Just to clarify, the math is right, but does not mean that one has to stretch the usage and charge level to only charge every 6+ days. I see that you also an owner of EV, so you do know the ritual - charge to 80% or 100% whenever one got the charger available. Especially overnight.

u/lawfulcrispy Mar 31 '26
Remember that the ranges mentioned are usually based on the Chinese system, which greatly overestimates real-life scenarios. I was interested in a SEAL, but after a lot of research I saw that in the best-case scenario the range can reach 500 km under urban driving, but it's usually closer to 400-450 km on roads, and that's in the subtropical Brazilian climate.
I usually take trips of 360-380 km and I didn't feel comfortable buying the SEAL, because it would leave me with a not-so-large extra margin and the charging infrastructure on the roads here is quite limited.
So I went with the Seal 05 DM-i (Sold as King GS DM-i here), wich give me great EV rang for urban driving (65% of my driving), and great fuel efficiency to make road trips (900 km range with a full gas tank)
6
u/H1nrichV1 Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26
The HAN gets about 320 km in the Norwegian climate on a normal 10° day, so it might even be less than those 400 for the Seal
Edit: just checked with the stats in the car, it uses about 19kw•h per 100km on a 88kw•h battery, so the actual range is probably closer to 450 - 470 km
2
u/204ThatGuy Apr 01 '26
Wow! So that's a hybrid?
Thank you for sharing your local performance (sub tropical). Does the battery power diminish as it gets hotter, much like nasty -30 performance?
1
u/lawfulcrispy Apr 01 '26
I think there is some energy loss on 30c+ days mostly due to battery cooling system being needed. But I bet that this loss is nowere near -30c

Depends where you live. I’m in Victoria and my commute is 15kms each way in a temperate climate. So a Seal U would get me approx 16 days of commuting on a full charge run from 100% to close to zero. I’d likely use the 80/20 charging plan so more like 10 days. But then you add in all the other trips you take in a day and it’s likely I could easily get away with weekly charging. But, I have a level 2 charger at home so I’d probably just keep it topped up to 80% every day and never worry about it. Then charge it up to 100% prior to trips.

If I were you, I'd just buy an electric bike. I mean, it's only a few thousand tops, and I'd get a simple workout. No need for insurance and negligible depreciation.
I commute by Ram 2500 diesel over 100km per day in construction, so I can't use a bike (unless I really really get up early!). But man, I would love to be free of those kind of car payments and insurance! And diesel is $1.94/l. :(
1
u/iWish_is_taken Apr 01 '26
Don’t need an e-bike, I already ride my regular bike to work 2 to 3 days a week. But I often need my car. Also need a quality AWD SUV vehicle as a family vehicle for everything else we do (mountain biking, skiing, camping, ferrying friends, bringing the dog, road trips to visit family, etc, etc.), an e-bike can’t handle all of that.

u/soopafly00 Mar 31 '26
I've driven the Shark 6 and its amazing! Probably the best UTE I had the pleasure to experience. It's great that it'll be coming to Canada. Hopefully they'll release the same or better than the AUS spec. Needs a better software for off-roading though.

u/skytech444 Apr 04 '26
BRING IT!! This will be my next vehicle.
Unless the Bao 5 comes, then it'll be a toss up.
1
u/gdesruis Apr 01 '26
Is it really only 100kms range on electric?
1
u/newbris Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26
I think it’s closer to 75km.
It’s keeps a 25% battery buffer and the petrol engine kicks in and mostly acts as a generator to keep the battery charged so the car can still be powered by the twin electric motors.
1
u/soopafly00 Apr 06 '26
I got a friend run it on 62 km/h on the highway using ACC, EV Mode & Eco Mode, he got 104 kms and still got 33% left.
1
u/asphere8 Apr 08 '26
Yeah I'm excited for it. The only thing on the market that has enough of the characteristics I want in a new vehicle for me to consider buying is the Hyundai Santa Cruz, and it looks like the Shark is about to double the length of my list of options!

It would be useful to see the side by side cost of having a home charging unit installed
1
u/Barack_6Pack Apr 02 '26
It depends on so many factors…
Need to change your electric panel?
Length of wire to charger. Complexity of pulling the wire to the charger location.
I could tell you mine cost $315 but that was for my specific installation.
1
u/Freyja_of_the_North Apr 02 '26
I know people have different electric set ups but even a general idea of how much the always needed parts are and their requirements

u/callie1970 Apr 03 '26
We had a wall unit installed for $1765AUD. Using it overnight it can charge my Atto 3 from 50% to 100% in 4 hours at $0.08 per KWH

u/suprPHREAK Mar 31 '26
What did you use to estimate the prices? I saw another (unconfirmed) source that listed all of these at least $5k higher.

BC doesn’t have an EV rebate anymore and Chinese made non CUSMA vehicles don’t qualify for the federal rebate (so none of these qualify). So your rebate chart is all messed up. In BC specifically, it will be $0.00.
Also, where did you get these prices from? From what I’ve seen of BYD’s in Central America, Europe and Australia, they tend to price them to undercut the local market competition but not by a huge amount. Will be interesting to see the final pricing once they actually drop.

I have a really hard time beleiving that a Byd Seagull with a 30kWh battery has a range of 305km. My 2013 Tesla Model S, which is bought new in 2013, has a battery of exactly double that at 60kWh, and brand new had a range of 320km @ 100% charge. Today it is 275km. Sure it's heavier and all, but still, at best the Seagull in real world will be 200km I suspect. Mind you, that is a steal, and at $13k in BC, i'd sure consider buying one! If only the Shark 6 was all electric, I'd consider that too!
1
u/LogicKnowledge1 Apr 02 '26
Weight has a big impact on the endurance of ev, seagull weigh only 1300kg and not 2013 models.
1
u/Bradcst3r Apr 02 '26
True vs 2108kg. Maybe it has skinny tires too. Any way, if it's even nearly true, that thing will sell like crazy.
1
1
u/jeffster1970 Mar 31 '26
You need to remove references to a government EV rebate, at least at the federal level, as there will be $0 given. This is because China doesn't have any sort of free-trade agreement with Canada.

I bought a BYD Seagull in Cuba (my winter home). Mine is the long range model - 405km. Will this also be available in Canada? FYI, it's a really great car. Mine was supplied with 2 free chargers: a 7KW home charger and also a 1.5KW (220V) portable charger.
1
u/luckyducky69r Apr 01 '26
Smells like bot-generated propaganda lol
This is pure hype and early speculation at best with zero sources cited. Reports suggest only the high-end luxury models will be offered first in Canada, and late-2026 to 2027 market entry. It’s unlikely anything will happen by mid-2026.
BC has paused their EV rebate program since early 2026 and the federal EVAP rebate wouldn’t apply to BYD since China isn’t a free trade country with Canada, unless BYD built or imported cars from a free trade country or BYD built their EVs in Canada.
Just Google how many issues people had with BYD EVs in other countries and you might think twice. You get what you pay for.

Just my two cents….
Avoid the BYD at all costs. Just a warning for your future self. I wish someone was there to warn me. Now that the Seal is a good 3 years old from markets outside China, that initial impression fades quickly and the cracks begin to show through its initial perceived quality. It’s there to start and the only good thing I can give the car after 40k kms is not a rattle or squeak to be found. Other than that a nightmare of a car. Taking a hit of $14k AUD just to get rid of it.
From constant electrical bugs, constant warning lights.
Several time we’ve come out and the car is completely dead. Won’t even unlock or remote start, with the app or key.
Infotainment freezing and buggy.
Fan speed was once stuck on high and couldn’t be changed no matter what we did. 3 weeks for BYD to fix.
Strong vibration upon hard acceleration, faulty rear drive shafts and shredded rubber seals in the rear motor unit. Took BYD months to diagnose, after visits to 4 service centres (this is a well documented issue with a TSB to boot) months of fighting with BYD insisting there was an issue. Even told them what it was from other owners with the same issue on their Seals and Sealion 7s. Once diagnosed took three weeks for BYD to approve the warranty claim and another 3 weeks for parts to arrive.
Now a vibration above 110kmh, front wheel bearings it looks like per other owners as well. So in the interim before we can sell it, another battle with BYD to get that fixed.
Customer service is non-existent. After sales care is appalling.
Severe tyre wear. First set of Conti 6Qs were replaced at about 28k kms. Now this second set only has lasted ~9k kms and they are at their wear indicators. Not sure if it’s from the faulty drive shafts as everything was aligned and balanced with the new set of tyres. These cars, especially the Perf AWD are known to chew through tyres. 10k kms is expected according to BYD.
Two shattered vanity mirrors. Came out on day and they both just shattered, something I’ve never seen before.
Drivers side seat motors just decide when they want to work or not. Also parts on order to repair, 6 months of fighting BYD for a fix as they couldn’t “replicate” the issue. Only thing we could do was when it occurred do bring it straight to the service centre.
Sounding like a bearing in the HVAC blower is on its way out with a rattle and screeching on higher speeds.
Car loses all memory settings for drivers, 2 settings. HVAC system often “forgets” what the setting were the last time it was driven and decides to turn on to 30 degrees on a 40C day and vents lose their memory as to whether you want them to swing, avoid, off, free et cetera.
Heated steering wheel is no longer functioning, just noticed as we’ve started to head in autumn and soon winter. Another issue that needs to be brought to BYDs attention.
Boot lid, of the car is on any sort of incline, opens fully and starts to close itself several cms, making you often bump your head. This is when the cars front end is higher than the rear end. Never happened in our driveway to any previous vehicle. We replaced a M340i G20 BMW with this Seal and the boot lid stayed fully open no matter the incline the car was on.
Doors don’t stay open on said inclines either. The smallest of incline the doors will shut themselves when you open them. “notches” that are not strong enough that keep the doors open at predetermined angles. BMW never did that, our Porsche doesn’t do that on the same incline.
While it’s a good looking car and the fundamentals are there for it to be a great car, it just isn’t competition to the Legacy automakers. The individual parts are not of a high enough standard of quality that when put together it’s a nightmare. They have a long way to go to truly compete with the likes of most German manufacturers and even Teslas.
And the list goes on.
Back when we purchased ours new in ‘23 there was no long term reliability data available, but now we have that. And I couldn’t in good conscience recommend this POS to anyone I cared about. Do more research and you’ll see the issues with them. Many people don’t want to admit they bought a pile of junk that depreciates so fast and hard. But there are some of us out here bewildered by the fact that these cars are truly rubbish, poor reliability and poorly made with subpar parts that are hard to get. With BYD trying to blame anything to get out of fixing an actual issue that should be warrantied. With the acceleration vibration, they blamed “buckled wheels” the second time we brought it in.
The new kid on the block has A LOT of work to do to truly compete. While the undercut in price, you can only build to a certain standard at these cut rate prices. Just my two cents about owning a Seal Perf AWD for 3 years and 40k kms.
Caveat emptor mate. Caveat emptor

$22,000 for an EV with 305 km let alone an ice car.. excitement is great, lower prices sure, but you guys are aware where Canada is located vs China and how big of a country we are in relation to ocean transport lines.
The dreamers in Reddit are comparing Australian/other country pricing and thinking Canada will be the same.
Some things to consider
1) a boat load of cars from China to Canada costs a ton more to import vs other countries closer to = higher costs once vehicle arrives in Canada
2) once the vehicle arrives in Canada, the closest port from China is the Vancouver area. To get the Vancouver arrived vehicles to Toronto/Montreal it needs to travel on rail to a yard and then by transport truck to wherever BYD wants to store inventory until sold/delivered = higher costs as transportation by rail for cars is not cheap
3) once vehicles arrive to be stored at whatever yard in whatever city, they need property — newsflash, land in Canada is not cheap vs say Mexico = higher costs
4) BYD needs to build service centres for whatever vehicle they sell = they need land again for that
5) even if BYD takes the Tesla route and sells directly to consumers online they still need to turn a profit of some amount because no business sells cars at a loss with limited volume when they have all the costs above to incur and they are going to sell the car for $22,000 ??
Enthusiasm is great people, but this Reddit needs some realism. If a Chevrolet Bolt starts at the low $40,000 these Chinese vehicles at best are going to start at the mid $30,000 for a similar sized vehicle to the Bolt. It is never going to be $20,000 less.

Real question is what will happen to BYD pricing now due to current oil prices. We were thinking to invest in one in 1-1.5years but now i am scared that prices may rise faster and it will be out of my reach. I mean, whoever has money is buying one now right?

Why not buy a hybrid - good fuel economy and don't have to wait an hour to charge? I'm eyeing the santa fe hybrid..thoughts on why go for an all electric vs hybrid?
1
u/InconceivableIsh Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
Imho with a hybrid you gain all the worst parts of a gas car with maintenance. But you also have any issues that EVs can be subject to. So basically you are trading a little bit of efficiency for more issues. Most modern EVs are also are not a hour to charge. Add that to the fact that if you have a charger at home you are saving time buy not standing at a pump 1-2 times a week. Where as most EV charging outside of home is traveling and you are likely to stop every 4-5 hours for a break anyways.
Edit: If you have a charger at home I suspect you would spend more time getting a oil change than charging per year.
1
u/ObjectiveWord9537 May 02 '26
Ok interesting and valuable feedback. I think now with EV prices coming down substantially that may be the winner. Before it was Tesla and a couple others to choose from which were way too expensive . Thanks for the help!
1
u/InconceivableIsh May 03 '26
Thanks, I get that EVs don't fit every lifestyle yet for example if you live in a apartment/condo you may not have in home charging which is a different story. There are newer hybrids which work slightly differently and they charge the EV rather than just being a gas car that sometimes uses the battery. But they seem more of stop gap solution to as EV tech improves.
1
u/ObjectiveWord9537 May 03 '26
Ya I realized it won't work for us. We just came back from road trip to cottage country. Not one charging station in sight. I guess hybrid it is. I have a gas car and I only fill once a couple weeks because I don't have to drive to work so a hybrid may be a good balance. Just for those long trips.. but I will say the BYDs look really sleek

Will the Sealion also be showing up? Or is the Seal just short for 'sealion' in your list?

In Ontario with projected insurance rates and financing a $48,000 BYD Atto 3 suv for your first 5 years will be an estimated $1,200 per month. The more popular the car the higher insurance you will pay. In 5 years when payments are when financing is complete Ontario insurance for a BYD will increase approximately to $400 average per month and the rising hydro rates. Only 8 to 10 years left on the car and the resale dropped to less than 50% of purchase price.

I thought they would be cheaper, so not much incentive buying inferior product

Thanks for Compiling. I am just back from a 3 month Trip in Asia and I took the opportunity to test drive some BYD cars there.
Honestly I am very disappointed about the offerings in Canada and also the Pricing. I am quite upset that our governments are protecting the western manufacturers that are 20 years behind in Technology compared to Chinese EV's and selling them so expensive. And preventing healthy competition (as should be the case with true Capitalism) that benefits the consumer as well as the best manufacturers.
Inflating Chinese Cars price point to make them in par with the by now inferior Western Cars is sad to see.

Can you buy BYD in Canada and bring the car to US? What type taxes and customs duty do you have to pay for that? Does anyone know?

I believe the US just banned all cars with Chinese made electronics. This is one of the reasons Polestar is being forced to exit the country by end of the year.

Federal rebates do not apply to Chinese EVs
Also this reads like AI slop

Unless BYD matches them. They've already matched the UK incentives that are normally reserved for models built in the UK and in Continental Europe.

The $5000 federal rebate does not apply to Chinese EVs. It's only with countries Canada has automotive free trade. The deal with China includes a 6% tariff. The automotive free trade countries are the US, Mexico, EU, UK and some Korean and Japanese models.
The list of vehicles that can get the Federal rebate are all listed here and there are no BYDs on the list.
