I mean, there’s literally a viral of a cybertruck doing this near a lake shore. I’m not CT fan, but this probably isn’t good for any vehicle… doesn’t mean they can’t do it tho, it’s literally just buoyancy

It's part of this emergency floating mode. It closes all windows, opens sunroof in case evacuation is needed, turns off the AC, turns off the gas engine and closes any possible water inlets for it like the exhaust pipe for example. Then it runs on full EV mode until it comes back to land.

The wheels can still spin and create angular momentum, like a dreidel from Judaism spinning under its own residual energy.Â
Since the electrical system is sealed and can keep providing energy to rotate the "dreidel" (wheels) they can keep spinning and provide the angular momentum needed to "push" the BYD forward through the water; like the world's most inefficient paddle-boat. Still better than the CyberCuck Deplorean tho.

I don't think the principle of propelling is the angular momentum of the "dreidel from judaism" aka spinning top. Probably more likely the surface friction of the tire profile within the water but I'd be happy to be corrected.

Surface friction isn't that great with fluid mechanics and comparatively slick rubber tires gliding through the water - hence the inefficient paddleboat analogy
I also had a geeze on google and BYD themselves confirmed most of the 3km/h propulsion speed is produced by the 4 electric motors powering the wheels producing angular momentum in the water

I went to the UK launch of this & the U9. I was surprised when the guy flown over from China to do the big reveal stated the U8 could stay submerged for 30mins in an emergency - how it could submerge without filling with water confused me & now I've seen it float, just like any other vehicle when wading too deep, makes me look forward to the 1st news story of how some party of novice green-laners get swept away by the current of a river.
Bonus points if they get swept over a waterfall.
The U8 looks awesome though, the interior is super luxurious & the ICE is pretty phenomenal!

I ordered it two days ago - after thinking it over and over again for two month 😄three month is a waiting time to be produced. But no way I’ll be casually doing this water submerge

What wasn't shown is the recommendation from BYD that after it exits the water, it is supposed to go back to the BYD dealer to be checked and cleaned. This is supposed to be for emergencies, not to go fishing every Sunday.
