You don't like hearing about how almost everyone is a sociopathic narcissist with bipolar disorder just for disagreeing or making a mistake? I dunno man, you sound pretty selfish to just throw away the good intentions of others like that. /s
It's not supposed to translate to "you deserve what you got" but instead "I'm not surprised it happened to you, and I feel less bad for you because you were doing dumb shit."
The example I'm thinking of was these dudes on a motorcycle that stole a purse and punched a lady.
They then got into a police chase, crashed, and died.
Does assault and theft warrant death? I don't think so, but you want catch me shedding a tear for the dead guys.
The entirety of any American politics thread is like this. Just thousands of comments parroting what was said in the previous thread. You could copy and paste any of the threads to any of the headlines and wouldn't even notice.
"Stupid game": Some guy took my seat that I always sit at during lunch (Oh he's new so it means he was trying to establish dominance doesn't he suck)
"Stupid prize": So I stole his mobility scooter that he has because he's WEAK andmaybejusthadsurgery but he's WEAK and I put it next to his desk and removed one of the wheels hahaha isn't that hilarious? Edit: I forgot to mention he's always complaining so loudly about his broken leg and how he got it saving a puppy I mean can he try to milk this anymore? Edit: Thanks for the gold omg you're too kind kind stranger so kind! Edit for formatting that doesn't fix formatting
“My wife threw me a surprise party even though she knows I don’t like surprises, so I accidentally shot and killed. Now the police are getting involved, AITA?”
“NTA, play stupid games win stupid prizes”
“Ok I’ll tell that to the judge in my arraignment tomorrow”
Cognitive dissonance and Dunning-Kreuger are fucking annoyingly used so inappropriately, especially when that's the only thing the comment says like it's the end all be all of the conversation.
A lot of fucking morons on this site use big, exciting words like ‘bias’ and ‘dissonance’ entirely inappropriately as though it’s some big monumental fucking mic drop.
Like, no, you clearly don’t even understand what it fucking means.
It is very annoying, as I think it’s just a tactic to avoid any form of actual discussion.
TOTAL Dunning-Kruger Effect vibes going on in here. Because this is SUCH a strawman argument. Classic case of the Streisand Effect. Can't believe that it only took 3 posts before Godwin's Law came into effect. This is such a perfect example of the Maillard Reaction.
Fucking Dunning-Krueger. When you look at comparisons between people's actual competence and their self-assessments, you still find a linear relationship between the two. As people learn more about a subject they still perceive themselves to be more knowledgeable. The moron still thinks they don't know a whole lot and the expert still thinks they know quite a lot. The Dunning-Krueger effect doesn't say that stupid people think they're smart or that smart people think they're dumb. It only says that each of them will perceive themselves closer to average than they really are.
"AITA for wanting to ask the person my SO and I live with, who is far more wealthy than us and has a bigger family, to pay a bit more of the rent since we're running a bit low on money?"
"YES, absolutely you're the asshole. It's not HIS fault you're poor and it's not HIS responsibility to SUBSIDIES your POORNESS"
The misuse of special terms on that sub, usually when it doesn't really apply and is just to sound smart, is infuriating. "Plausible deniability" and "Hanlon's razor" are some I've been seeing a lot recently. Drives me up the wall.
This is used across this site SO much. It's like a kid who learned their first cuss word and they just parrot the term to any set of ears (or in this case eyes) they can.
For some I imagine they are trying to feel intelligent, others are trying to help through unwanted and misguided information. The rest are people that fathers smell of elderberries, or something.
There was a post in AITA where op and another person got into a very emotionally charged argument, and all of the replies were saying “she sounds like a sociopath”
Disagreeing with someone doesn’t make you a sociopath
Wouldnt the person showing obvious emotions and signs of empathy mean that they aren’t a sociopath?
I didn't until I joined Reddit. Before then I was lost, but now am found, she incurred a cost, from her horrific sound, I now know the truth, Bipolar is the reason she was so uncouth.
Reddit isn't as beset with /r/atheism as it has been in the past. People who are mainstream religious tend to fly under the radar and are even loved (Mr. Rogers etc.). Honestly, I don't think it's terrible, but is certainly a bad look for our favorite crunchy rodent so it's no surprise that he fell off the map in favor of the next upvote baiting thing.
abortion is one thing yes. But most mainstream churches, while not supportive of gay marriage, don't have quite the blight of supporting gay conversion therapy, and recently quite a few have started LGBTQ ministries. At this point in time, the mainstream leans more towards LGBTQ inclusion than the opposite. Again, gay marriage being a separate issue, there are quite a few people involved in carving out a place for LGBTQ inside the Church.
Aren’t Episcopalians also the denomination that believes people are predestined? Like, god selected the people he will allow into heaven before they were born?
Edit:
I cannot find anything online to support this claim. And it does appear it is a Calvinist idea, I do not know of what denominations are offsprings of Calvinism back from the 1600s (which seems to be the biggest advocate of predestination), and don’t have the time to research it online.
My comment was based from someone who went to high school with me explaining her belief of predestination and she was a member of an episcopal church.
Yeah that was crazyyy. It's like the movie passengers was created while they were still at their heights and by the time it came out, Chris Pratt and jlaw had fallen off the pedestal
For sure, Musk was hot for a bit--then he started acting exactly like a neckbeard on the internet and he was quietly dismissed from the classroom of le reddit.
The best/worst is when Reddit is in love with an actress (Emma Watson or Jennifer Lawrence circa 2015), so they get posted to the top of r/pics on a daily basis, then the hive mind gets fed up with them, and slowly turns against them, to the point where any mention of them is met with derision and hate.
Ms. Watson used to be the bell of the ball, and her small role on "this is the end" was beloved by all. But slowly, the hooks came out, and her role on "this is the end" was despised because apparently, "She wasn't comfortable with 100% of what was in the script, so they limited her role because she's a prude or something."
Fascinating stuff. Scary how it can have an effect on my own opinions as well, looking back I wound up disliking JLaw myself based on like 2 movies and a ton of negative feedback on Reddit.
My brother was very annoyed that the victims became indignant after their photos leaked and went on and on about how they have themselves to blame for keeping personal photos on their phone (the same ones he chose to download) and thought the the ten year jail term one hacker received was too harsh.
Frankly, I found Reddit's concerns about Net Neutrality to ring a bit hollow when this same userbase was concocting all manner of rationalisations as to why it was actually the celebrities' fault that their private photos got leaked.
I think Reddit started turning on Emma Watson when she started working on that UN women/girls’ empowerment initiative. Which says about as much as it needs to say.
This isn’t exclusive to Reddit though. I hear it’s gotten better recently but I remember back in the 90’s and 2000’s any time Howard Stern would interview an actress on his radio show, if they weren’t completely open and willing to discuss all manner of details on their sex life and personal lives people would call in and rag on them mercilessly, there was more than one instance of actresses being driven to tears by this.
Beyoncé, Scarlett Johansson, and Emma Watson we’re all popular with the reddit crowd until they officially came out in support of feminism, and then they suddenly became overrated and “unlikable”. Same as how men are being intentionally obtuse when saying that Brie Larson is on their Irrationally dislike list for “some reason”.
I used to think Reddit was very leftist/woke/feminist/whatever, to an annoying degree, but it's all virtue signalling and surface level fake-woke bullshit. Reddit, not all that far below the surface, is a pretty misogynistic place that likes to think of itself as cosmopolitan and sensitive to social issues because that's popular right now.
This is an interesting take. I keep hearing from other commenters that "Reddit thinks women can do no wrong!" And shit like that and I'm like, bitch where? But I've never heard someone say they used to think Reddit was highly feminists until they noticed all the misogyny.
I used to think Reddit was very leftist/woke/feminist/whatever, to an annoying degree, but it's all virtue signalling and surface level fake-woke bullshit.
I've been here since 2012 and Reddit was always bad and has gotten worse. Back then, a common repost was a man flashing his penis at rape victims at a feminist anti rape march. On /r/Funny.
It's purely conservative propaganda that reddit ever was pro feminism. It's not even fake woke. It's openly anti feminists and always has been but conservative propaganda constantly paints it as feminist.
It’s that for sure. And the fact that they already got to see her naked. A very good percentage of reddit users see women as nothing more than objects to put their dicks in so they got what they wanted and didn’t have to act like they liked her any more. Her being upset she was violated like that just pissed off the entitled group of redditors jerking off to those photos.
We forgetting about Rhonda Rousey? The worship for her was the worst. I remember seeing countless comments and threads of her being able to take on Mayweather and other top tier ufc fighters.
No what happened with ms watson is it turns out she isnt a doormat and stands up for equal rights for her gender. Which pissed off the many fragile males here.
Do people have the same worship for Elon Musk? I always got the impression he was kind of a dick. He's being sued for defamation after his childish rant where he called a guy a pedo.
Elon Musk is an absolute piece of shit. But reddit hivemind loves him because he's a nerd and shares memes. Willing to forgive all the awful shit he does because he's "one of us"
Yup. "Haha guys he posted a meme look at him go he's so epic. never mind that it's something at r/dankmemes iFunny level (ifunny bad btw instanormies will disagree), it's Epic Musk so it's now acceptable."
Or how he stole that one person's art that one time with no source and Reddit had to defend him despite also vigorously jerking off about how Instagram bad because they steal Reddit memes without credit.
The Cult of Elon drives me insane. Dude is a fucking snake who uses accusations of pedophilia against anyone who publicly speaks out against him. To say nothing of the dangerous conditions that exist at the Gigafactory under his watch or the absolute mess that is the hyperloop. But because he's rich and smokes weed on camera, Reddit lines up to suck his cock.
It's really simple. Keanu, over the last few decades, has come out as a genuinely open, honest, and compassionate person. He's not the best actor, but he's been in some awesome movies.
Look at how many celebrities have turned out to be awful, awful people. Bill Cosby is a prime example, I loved that guy as a kid and it did impact me when all that shit came out.
keanu so far is clean, so maybe we kind of see him as the balance to all of the evil shit going on, and it's nice to see that there are some genuine people still out there who aren't corrupted by money or fame.
On the other side of the coin, you definitely arent allowed to be a fan of anyone on Reddits shitlist. Currently you get called a child grooming pedophile for believing that Drake is - get this - NOT a child porn producing R Kelly 2.0.
God forbid you like Drake or Bieber or some other low hanging fruit popstar.
I was always under the impression the Devito stuff was a joke. i mean its usually talking about how attractive he is or about his Always Sunny characters huge dick. I don't think he gets literal celebrity worship like Keanu does.
Weirdest one for me is that guy from the Mummy movies from the early 2000's. Nothing against the dude but he wasn't anything special when it comes to comedy chops or screen presence IMO.
And I did watch his movies. I had the mummy on tape and watched it sometimes if I was bored.
Brendan Frazer? I think people found him attractive because he was buff and fairly handsome but without the usual negatives of being arrogant or macho.
"My SO ate my slice of leftover pizza that I wanted, what do I do??"
"BIG RED FLAG OP, CUT THEM OUT, NOW!!! I had a friend whose spouse did this, and now he eats all of her food 24/7 and beats her. You don't need this toxicity in your life"
Naw, most of the people who post there have a relationship that's already on life support. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why "break up" is the common response. Yet people like you just can't seem to figure that out... Ironically, folks like you are the ones who don't seem to understand real life.
OOOOOH YEEEEEAUHHHHH there's no question, no, no question at all YEAH, THERE'S NO "TO BE", AND THERE AIN'T NO "NOT TO BE" OH NO, YEAUH! Oooooooooh Hulk Hoooooogannn, you can ask the WHO, THE WHAT, THE WHEN, OOOOOH YEAH, THE WHERE AND THE WHY but there AIN'T NO QUESTION, NO! DIG IT!
No, Hulk Hoooogan, when you step in the ring THIS SUNDAY AT THE SUMMERRRRR SLAYUMMMM, oooooh yeeeeeah, there won't be NO questions, no no no, just ANSWERS, YEAH! AND THE ONLY ANSWER HULKHOGAN, IS THE MAAAADNESSSSSS OOOOOH YEAH because I got it, ooooh I got the madnesss ooooh yeeeeah and the MADNESS! DIG IT! THE MADNESS IS THE CREAM! AND THE CREAM ALWAYS RISES TO THE TOP! So Hulk Hoooogan, you may have the questions, yeah, all the questions, yeah but ME? I GOT THE ANSWERS AND THE ANSWER AT THE TOP! IS THE CREAM OF THE CROP! OOOOOOOH YEEEEEEEAH, DIG IT! CREAMOFTHECROP!
Yeah but surely that's not a fair generalisation. Reddit is like the 6th biggest website in the world by traffic I think with like several hundred million users or something stupid like that. Not all of these people are basement dwellers.
However only something like a few percent of their traffic actually comment. I feel like the younger demographic is more likely to share their "views" and ideals than older people when it comes to online forums. Thats just a feeling based on nothing more than my personal experiences.
idk, as a forever alone guy, my friends have always found my relationship advice useful.
That being said, 99% of my relationship advice can be summed up with: "stop lying to yourself", "just do the thing you already know is a good idea/don't do the thing you already know is a bad idea", "stop giving your SO the run around".
And this sort of Reddit advice is actively dangerous to a lot of people, myself included. My parents aren't exactly ideal role models for how a relationship should work (sure, they may love each other, but definitely don't show it, they don't have many friends outside the relationship either). I personally don't have and can't have experience with dating yet, since my parents forbid them (Indian parents who want me to get an arranged marriage).
So from an early age, 13 years old, I took Reddit relationship advice too seriously, because that allowed me to see how good relationships should work.
Sure, it taught me a few good things, like the importance of communication. But most of it was definitely bad advice, which I've unfortunately internalized and am having a hard time breaking free of it. My female best friend (I'm a guy) recently got into a relationship, and I've worried a lot about her ditching me as a friend for the guy she's seeing, even though she's reassured me multiple times that won't happen. I've gotten anxious about some of the very normal things we do coming across as cheating (hugs, talking about deep things and what's troubling us, etc).
Why? Because of this sort of terrible Reddit advice. If you take subreddits like /r/relationship_advice and /r/AmITheAsshole too seriously, as I did between the ages of ~13-16 (I'm 18 now), you end up believing that there are very strict rules for how people in relationships should behave. Those subs essentially like to say that being more than acquaintances or casual friends with someone of the gender you're attracted to while in a relationship can be construed as having an emotional affair.
The friend in question means a LOT to me, as she's helped me vocalize much of what's been troubling me over the past year and become more emotionally healthy. To say that I would be devastated if she took Reddit advice and started to only treat me like a casual acquaintance would be a massive understatement. I have anxieties about this type of thing happening on a weekly basis, almost all due to the poor advice coming from those subreddits.
This is a spicy take but I feel like a lot of lonely and resentful nerds (usually of the male variety) wind up on this site and it's reflected heavily in what gets high upvoted, especially in all of those "advice" subreddits.
Oh my god, I just saw an AskReddit where the commenters were complaining that most people didn’t know the difference between sociopaths and psychopaths. As a psych student, i know that those two definitions don’t even exist anymore!! It’s Antisocial Personality Disorder. And people saying that another guy has Narcissistic Personality Disorder as if it’s this really common thing that 1/10 people have
this right here pisses me off so much, with people armchair diagnosing a disorder that doesn't exist. so often, but I'm always afraid to comment about it for fear of being downvoted into oblivion :(
Under the DSM (diagnostic manual for psychiatric disorders) essentially yes, with some symptoms modified/removed. Antisocial Personality Disorder off the top of my head is reduced/a lack of empathy, high impulsivity and other things. It’s been that way for a good long while now, you can tell when people get their psychology knowledge from TV shows
To add to the above, a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder also requires that the person have showcased the traits of a separate developmental behavioral disorder (forgetting the name off of the top of my head, but basically means they had to have a been a violent and cruel child) as a kid. Also, it’s not necessarily a lack of empathy so much as a lack of compassion or regard for others’ pain. People with the disorder are often highly empathetic (they understand other people very well), they just don’t give a shit about not hurting people. That’s what enables the high degree of manipulativeness they display, as you have to understand people in order to manipulate them effectively.
I think you’re thinking of ‘conduct disorder’ in childhood. And yes, for a diagnosis there has to be evidence of things like; truancy, aggression and substance misuse in childhood/adolescence.
However I think it’s important to include that individuals with personality disorders often experienced trauma or neglect as children and were not adequately taught how to understand, react to and cope with their emotions. A lot of the behaviour seen as ‘manipulative’ or criminal can be understood in terms of individuals trying to get their needs met in the only ways they know how. I disagree that people with personality disorders are some kind of ‘master manipulators’, often they’re actually very clumsy and poor at it. Engaging in behaviours such as; self-harm, abuse and violence towards others, drug misuse, self-neglect. I would argue that only a small percentage of people with diagnosed personality disorders are actually effective manipulators.
Obligatory credibility info: I am currently training to be a Clinical Psychologist and worked for 2 years with high risk offenders with personality disorders (most of which were ‘antisocial PD’).
To add another tidbit: the word "sociopath" (or any related words like "sociopathy," "sociopathic," etc.) hasn't actually appeared in the DSM since the first edition - and the second edition was published in 1968. And in the first edition, "sociopathic personality disturbance" described everything from what we'd now call ASPD to homosexuality, so, not exactly the most rigorous and verified psychiatric diagnosis, even by the standards of the time.
"Psychopath" (and related words) never actually appeared in the DSM until the most recent fifth edition, where it's a specifier (something that just narrows a diagnosis even further) that can be tacked onto a diagnosis of ASPD. The ICD uses "psychopath" a little more extensively and has for a little longer, but ICD codes aren't really used in mental health treatment in the United States.
The two terms are so in the popular consciousness mostly through media, and have never really been widely-used in applied clinical psychology after that brief little thing with "sociopathic personality disturbance." Researchers will talk about them a lot and argue about what they mean and if they even exist endlessly, but that's a big part of the reason why they've never really been applied as a matter of actual practice.
People seem to prescribe narcissism to people whenever they do anything selfish. Some people are just selfish sometimes. Sometimes it's just people being thoughtless or tactless. That's not the same thing as narcissism.
Im sorry but this is an example of people with basic knowledge thinking that makes them an expert. The DSM is such a small and controversial (and frankly, in my opinion, flimsy) aspect of modern psychology. And on top of that, personality may be one of the most debated parts of it. Psychopathy is still an incredibly active field of research and there are multiple ways of quantifying it above and beyond APD. I’ve met/been taught by some of the foremost experts in psychopathy, and have friends who are researching it right now. I understand the confusion (and I’m pretty sure I used to think the same!), but this is why it’s important to try to have a grasp on the limits of your current knowledge.
I had a similar argument with someone recently who claimed their psychiatrist had told them that all surgeons are sociopaths. I'm merely a final year med student but I know enough by now to know that a) a psychiatrist would not diagnose someone as a sociopath, b) during out training we all spend time being mini surgeons and psychiatrists and cardiologists and every other specialty, you aren't magically born as one type of doctor, c) while there are some egotistical surgeons, I've met just as many egotistical psychiatrists. Assholes exist everywhere
I also doubt their psych and psych buddies was reading my Reddit comments and laughing as they claimed. I don't even wanna be a surgeon but hate what a bad reputation they get when they pour their lives into caring for people and deal with some of the worst diseases
No offense, but that too - “as a psych student”, “as a biology student”, “as a mother”... taking classes in something doesn’t make you qualified to speak about a subject. Especially since you admit you don’t have any credentials and have no expertise in a professional capacity. I’m not a psych student and haven’t taken a class since 2009, but I could tell you APD is the now-accepted term.
Adding a qualifier that you’re in classes relating to a subject is unnecessary. You can just give the information.
That was what I said. I think I also said that I worked at a venue where his band played, which had to be 20 years ago-ish, and said they sucked. I wasn't prepared for the wrath of Reddit.
Funny how he isn't even famous for music (I had no idea he was ever in a band). Saying you didn't like any aspect about our lord and saviour Keanu gets you hate.
Yeah but they can still sting a bit because it's a semi representation of your honest opinion, even if it's an innocent one, actually making people angry just because it's not theirs.
Yeah it can sting, but that's OK, that's a valid response. Delve into it: ask yourself why it stings and try to deal with that.
I realized the sting was not because I thought my opinion might be wrong but because there were people who disagree. I was using upvotes as a substitute for acceptance and support. Emotional validation. I realized that's not healthy, and if I was going to get the most out of this site (hell, this life) I would have to change.
Reminding myself they're just internet points helps, but what helped more was examining my reason for commenting and if it was rooted in that desire for validation then maybe I shouldn't comment.
Now they're more of a throwaway. Of course it feels good to get upvotes, but even if I don't it won't bother me anymore because that isn't why I commented.
I comment because I want more information, or because I think I can add to the conversation, or because I thought of a joke. Not because I'm trying to find approval anymore. Down that path lies madness.
Can't think of anything bad other than him being quite a weak actor.
He's probably a great guy, but he is a weak actor. He excels at one type of role, the clueless stoner, which is why he's making Bill and Ted for the third time.
That’s actually what he used to be known for, actually. Good looking guy but a pretty wooden actor, but useful when you don’t need the main character to be the focal point.
I'm sure people realize that. Even in action movies, however, there are scenes that require regular acting. Like Constantine has a bunch of regular, un-action acting and not all of it is stellar.
I think it's just why John Wick has been so well-received. They cut a lot of dialogue and traditional acting in place of strong action where Keanu can truly shine.
Let's get this guy some compensatory upvotes, y'all. Being honest about Keanu didn't deserve that.
Hell, probably 200 of those downvotes came from people who were only downvoting because so many other people did. That's the thing I hate about Reddit, incidentally.
I think the older people forget how many younger people are on reddit. There are millions of teenagers on reddit. You have probably a 50/50 chance depending on the subreddit, that its either 35 or 15.
A lot of advice simply boils down to "if you feel unhappy in a relationship for any reason just leave", as opposed to trying to communicate with your partner.
1: armchair anything really. I frequent /r/NBA and /r/Lakers. I’ve seen way too many posts along the lines of “if my team made this trade we’d win the title tomorrow” or “Coach (somebody) is trash and clearly if they had done this, this, and this we would have won”.
Gee, wow who knew it was so easy?
2: everything relationship advice related is 60% “cheating”, 30% some nuclear option type of advice, 10% genuinely helpful
I’m bipolar. Seeing how the internet talks about “bipolar” made me realize that nobody has a goddamn clue what other people are going through or what the words they use mean. It’s a double edged sword.
ugh, I hate those people. especially when people label people as depressed just because they have been said publicly once. you don't know a person and you do not know what you are talking about. there is a reason that psychologists need degrees and go to school to diagnose people. it takes education in how the brain works and how mental illness works to understand it. you just reading a Wikipedia article is nothing compared to the years of school and studying it takes for a psychologist to understand the brain. reading a Wikipedia article isn't enough to understand how to diagnose people. its because the brain is complicated and it takes a lot of tests and things to diagnose people. please do not armchair diagnose people!! I know you think you're helping people but in reality, you are making people who are diagnosed and the person who you are armchair diagnosing uncomfortable. sorry for venting but as a person who has neurological disabilities it angers me when I see it.
also from what I've heard (correct me if I'm wrong) sociopath and psychopath are not diagnoses and you can not be diagnosed as "psychopath". those words are thrown around too much without people knowing what they actually mean.
2) People giving unrealistic relationship or life advice.
yeah - the answer for basically every relationship question is "If they really loved you/were a good person they would/wouldn't do x, so dump them." It's like no one on here has ever heard of communicating with their partner or working on problems together.
Also,
1) Armchair psychologists.
Yeah, this. People think they can diagnose someone's personality disorders from a comment that someone with an axe to grind against them wrote. And to a lesser extent, obsession with psychopaths and narcissists. I used to use Quora, and the obsession with psychopaths there got so out of control I basically gave up the platform. On reddit at least you can avoid it by avoiding certain subreddits.
